A FAMILY PORTRAIT

Bowser stood in the castle’s grand hall, adjusting his glasses with a careful claw. The once-fearsome Koopa King, now a bit older and softer around the edges, beamed as he held a dusty old frame in his hands. Inside it, a younger version of himself sat proudly, surrounded by Cherry, baby Cleo, the Koopalings, Nova and Bowser Jr much younger.

Cherry stood beside him as she smiled fondly at the memory.

“It’s been too long,” Bowser muttered, his voice deep and warm. “We need a new family portrait. Look at this — they’re all babies here!”

Cherry chuckled. “You just want an excuse to gather everyone in one place.”

“Maybe,” Bowser admitted, his eyes twinkling behind his glasses. “But what kind of king doesn’t have an updated royal family portrait?”

Word spread quickly through the castle, and one by one, the kids trickled into the throne room.

Ludwig, now a serious young adult, crossed his arms. “Is this really necessary?”

“Yeah, Dad,” Roy grumbled, adjusting his spiked bracelets. “It’s kinda... I dunno. Lame?”

“Picture day is for kids,” Wendy whined, checking her claws for chips. “We’re practically royalty! We should be doing something more glamorous.”

Bowser adjusted his glasses dramatically. “You could say this picture... will frame our legacy.”

The room filled with groans.

“Dad, please,” Bowser Jr. muttered, rubbing his forehead.

“I think it sounds fun!” Cléo chimed in. “Come on, guys, it’s just one picture.”

“I guess it’s harmless,” Morton Jr. shrugged, munching on a cookie. “And we get snacks, right?”

Kamek floated in on his broom, adjusting his spectacles. “Honestly, children, humor your father. He’s been talking about this for weeks.”

As the family gathered, Nova hesitated near the door, She still wasn’t entirely used to the idea of being part of such a big family.

Cherry noticed and gently took her hand. “Come on, Nova, you Know you belong in this picture too!”

Nova blinked, her mismatched eyes reflecting the castle lights. “Are you sure?”

Bowser gave a firm nod. “You’re one of us, kiddo. Now, get in here before Ludwig starts lecturing about symmetry.”

Despite their initial reluctance, the kids couldn’t refuse their dad’s hopeful grin. The family squeezed together on the massive throne room steps, with Cherry arranging everyone like a meticulous gardener. Ludwig straightened his shell, Wendy gave a blow kiss for the camera, and Iggy being himself as always. Nova found herself nestled between Jr and Larry, feeling a little out of place but also... warm.

Kamek perched on his broom just above Bowser, slightly smiling.

“Okay, everyone say... SHELLFIE!” Bowser called out.

The camera clicked just as the kids collectively groaned, but when they saw the picture later, even they had to admit it was perfect.

Bowser stood tall in the middle, glasses slipping down his snout, Cherry glowing at his side, and all ten kids — teens, young adults, little Cléo, and Nova — clustered around him, looking exasperated but undeniably happy.

Kamek hovered above them, looking proud and dignified.

Bowser placed the new frame on the mantel, right beside the old one. He stepped back, hands on his hips, and sighed contentedly.

“Look at that. A masterpiece.”

The kids lingered a bit longer than they needed to, sneaking glances at the photo.

“It does look kinda cool,” Roy muttered.

“I like how we all fit together,” Larry admitted.

“It’s... a nice memory,” Ludwig said softly.

Nova tilted her head. “I guess... I do look like I belong.”

Cherry took Bowser’s hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. “We’ll have to do this again in a few years.”

“Oh, definitely,” Bowser said with a grin. “But next time, we’re doing matching outfits.”

“DAD, NO!” they all cried in unison, and Bowser’s hearty laugh echoed through the castle.
