Demon Wind (1990)
One compliment you can give Demon Wind is that the title is just about perfect. This is a fart from Hell, and it’s nasty enough to peel paint. Unfortunately, the few scenes that might make it enjoyable as something “so bad it’s good” are bridged with a lot of boring material. This Evil Dead clone had to have a similar - or maybe even bigger - budget than the 1981 film but it looks 50 times worse.
After his father’s suicide, Cory (Eric Larson) asks his girlfriend Elaine (Francine Lapensée) and his friends (which include Jack Vogel as Stacey, Stephen Quadros as Chuck, Mark David Fritsche as Jack and Sherry Bendorf as Bonnie) to help investigate the family home. While investigating the ruins, they become trapped by a mysterious fog hiding demonic forces.
A group of friends trapped in a cabin in the woods while under attack by demons that proceed to possess them one at a time. The remaining young adults fight off their former friends as their numbers dwindle. It's pretty clear writer/director Charles Philip Moore was heavily influenced by Sam Raimi’s cult classic. You can also tell by the gore. Every demon oozes custard-colored blood like a maple tree come syrup harvest time. The major difference is that there isn’t a second of Demon Wind that’s self-aware and the attempts at humour are few. This movie wants you to be scared but you won’t be. When you laugh, it will be at its expense.
The funniest parts of the film come from a duo of smart-mouthed magicians who aren’t shy about throwing karate kicks. Every scene with them is gold. Too bad Demon Wind kills them off halfway through the movie. Once they’re gone, it’s impossible to remain invested in this story. Why would going back to this burned-out wreck would give Corey any answers about anything? His father lived there for a grand total of FOUR DAYS when he was a baby! Anyone with a brain would’ve taken one look at the crucified skeleton on the front lawn and turned away - I'm not sure if the fact it's been there for sixty years makes it better, or worse. Then again, asking human-like behaviour out of anyone in this film would be too much. The locals are so shifty you can’t not suspect them of being up to something. Elaine does a strip-tease in the middle of the rest-stop restaurant so the movie can throw some cheap titilation in. All of the friends converge on the house despite vague instructions left by Cory on their answering machines. It's a miracle this plot even manages to happen. Once it does, you'll be eager to see it end. You already know how this whole thing will play out.
If you’re looking to pair The Evil Dead with a movie that shows you how right the Bruce Campbell vehicle got it, I’m sure you can find better (worse?) than Demon Wind. You can probably find something funnier too. This movie has a Blu-ray release. I’m baffled as to why. It’s completely unmemorable and barely even a curiosity. If you stumble upon Demon Wind, you can have a few laughs at its expense but it will quickly fade from your memory. (October 8, 2021)

If you liked Bridgerton, here are other historical romances with the same tropes:
Virgin-Meets-Rake (Season 1, Simon and Daphne):
When the Duke was Wicked by Lorraine Heath: She's a witty debutante who's the jewel of the season, he's a seasoned rake mourning the death of his wife and child with excessive hedonism, and she recruits him to teach her how to attract a husband
The Lady Gets Lucky by Joanna Shupe: She's a shy heiress and master chef who struggles to talk to men, he's an irreverent scoundrel and would-be restaurant owner she recruits to teach her lessons to catch a husband
Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas: The villain in It Happened One Autumn enters a marriage-of-convenience with an heiress with a stutter (whose best friend he kidnapped, whoops) and at one point he goes, "I’m Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent. I can’t be celibate. Everyone knows that," and isn't being ironic.
Nine Rules to Break when Romancing a Rake by Sarah MacLean: She's on-the-shelf and deeply bored, he's a rake who's suddenly been given custody of his irreverent and wild teenage half-sister, she recruits him to help her be rebellious
Bound by Your Touch by Meredith Duran: He's a (seemingly) silly dandy, she's impossible to charm, and he shatters her facade
Enemies-To-Lovers** (Season 2, Anthony and Kate):
Eleven Scandals to Start to Win a Duke's Heart by Sarah MacLean: She loves causing trouble, he totally hates getting her out of it, she's wild, he's starchy, and they fall madly in love
The Notorious Lord Knightly by Lorraine Heath: She's the viperous writer who's publishing explosive smut starring him, her former fiancé that jilted her at the alter, and they find each other again
The Duke Gets Even by Joanna Shupe: She's a free-spirited heiress whose reputation was ruined ages ago, he's a broke Duke looking for a wife to fill his coffers and fix his estate, they see each other for who they truly are
It Happened One Autumn (and its precursor Then Came You) by Lisa Kleypas: two iterations of the classic, "free spirited woman meets buttoned-up man who loathes her and is kind of a freak in the sheets" trope in the best way possible. Also, Alex buys Lily a bear in Then Came You, which obviously made me cry
All the Ways to Ruin a Rogue by Sophie Jordan: His best friend is her brother, and they really want to fuck but hate it
Notorious Pleasures by Elizabeth Hoyt: She's engaged to his brother, they meet when she walks in on him fucking another woman, HATES her for being perfect, she hates him for being a degenerate loser, and infidelity ensues.
** These are true enemies-to-lovers books, not that hella lame rivals-to-lovers shit that's all over contemporary romances of late
Friends-To-Lovers (Season 3, Colin and Penelope):
The Lady Hellion by Joanna Shupe: Sophia is trying to solve a mystery (and dresses up as a man in the process), and recruits her friend (and one-time kissing buddy) Lord Quint to teach her how to shoot. She's exasperating, he's charmed and there's a puppy involved.
The Countess Conspiracy by Courtney Milan: She's a genius botanist but can't share her research since she's a woman, and he's her public face but refuses to continue anymore. He's always been in love with her, she's as oblivious as they come.
My Fake Rake by Eva Leigh: She's a scientist, he's an anthropologist, they're longtime friends and she recruits him to help her make a visiting naturalist jealous but ends up falling for him herself
Ravishing the Heiress by Sherry Thomas: They're in a marriage of convenience, but end up becoming real friends in the process before they realize they're in love
The Duchess Hunt by Lorraine Heath: He's a Duke looking to get married, she's his secretary and most trusted friend, he recruits her to find him a wife and they fall madly in love in the process
Forever Your Rogue by Erin Langston: He's her brother's friend who is recruited to help her manage her estate when her husband dies. She flits around constantly in anxiety and never sits still, and he likes it.
This should get you started!

Happy New Year!
Do you have any books with a nerdy hero? Like he's good at math, that's hot kind of thing
Happy New Year! And yep, I do.
Obviously, all of Ali Hazelwood's STEM books (The Love Hypothesis, Love, Hypothetically and Love on the Brain) have super nerdy heroes. I find these books quite fun--yes, they're normal contemporaries, but they're sweet and sexy and I read them super easily.
Two Wrongs Make a Right by Chloe Liese is another cute contemporary with a nerdy hero; I think he's a pediatrician? The heroine is on the autism spectrum, and the book is, I think, a retelling of Much Ado About Nothing.
The Lady Hellion by Joanna Shupe has a nerdy shut-in hero who struggles with panic attacks and anxiety (I think?) run afoul of the woman he has a paaast with, who happens to go out at night wearing pants and pretending to be a dude to help the downtrodden (specifically sex workers).
My Fake Rake by Eva Leigh is a historical retelling of She's All That with an extremely nerdy hero, in love with his extremely nerdy friend, who wants him to pretend to be a rake in order to get the attention of the guy she wants to marry.
Private Arrangements by Sherry Thomas is a historical I categorized as having a nerdy hero... And I'll be honest, I don't remember *exactly* what made him nerdy, but I will say this is a great book. The one with the married couple who's been together a decade but has been separated since the day after the wedding, with him agreeing to give her a divorce if she gives him an heir.
Never Met a Duke Like You by Amalie Howard has a duke who loves DINOSAURS!!! And he and the heroine do some things next to a dinosaur skeleton that a dinosaur skeleton should never have to witness :(
Never Seduce a Duke by Vivienne Lorret has one of my favorite nerdy heroes--the one with the glasses who's obsessed with his family's ancestral Arthurian cookbook, only to be completely undone by the wild heroine.
My Roommate is a Vampire is a light paranormal romance with a heroine whose roommate is in fact a vampire and also extremely nerdy.
The Secret Service of Tea and Treason by India Holton is a GREAT fantastical Victorian type book in which the hero is an extremely stern, glasses-wearing undercover agent who runs into his rival agent, an equally competent lady. They have to work together a mission, and basically can't resist tearing each other's clothes off at every possible opportunity.

So…
I was thinking about Sing 3 and the potential of bringing Nooshy back…
A lot of sources are speculating that it isn’t happening and I feel like I know the main reason why they think it won’t…
Tumblr media
As far as I know, Letitia Wright, Nooshy’s VA, is still on hiatus from acting because she had genuine concerns of the new COVID-19 vaccines and the internet cancelled her straight away! The last film released with her acting credit before this decision, of course, was Wakanda Forever. (yeah, just because I have high functioning autism, it doesn’t mean I’m an idiot when it comes to how long movies in post-production can take, especially for a MARVEL FILM!)
I still say that it’s not out of the question for Nooshy to return yet. Illumination has no problem replacing actors when the original is either unavailable or in legal trouble. For instance, Louis C.K., who originally voiced Max for The Secret Life Of Pets was facing sexual assault allegations during the production of the sequel, and Patton Oswalt was called in to fill the role.
Now you may be saying, “But, Artica, Max is the protagonist of Secret Life! It just wouldn’t be a Pets movie without Max! Maybe we could survive without Nooshy!”
Well, you’d be right. When you have a character that integral to your franchise, you can’t just drop them! That’s how I feel about Nooshy! She solidified herself as a part of the New Moon Troupe just by being there for Johnny and the others! If you pitched her now, you’d lose a choreographer! Okay, maybe that’s what Ryan could be used for as well, but I can see the pair of them being co-workers and supporting their friends unconditionally!
What’s the point? Well, for the past year, I have been scouting for potential candidates for Nooshy’s new voice actress. To keep the Black representation alive, I mostly focused on Black women with that beautiful British accent we know and love. Leigh-Ann Pollock of Little Mix fame (perfect for if they wanted Nooshy to sing), Clara Amfo of BBC Radio One, Sophie Okonedo of The Secret Life Of Bees [Funny coincidence there]… But then last night, I realized that the answer was right in front of my face from the beginning!
Tumblr media
Sherrie Silver was responsible for the choreography for Sing 2 and for helping to bring Out Of This World to life! She even stated that she really liked Nooshy and focused on her agility and flexibility a lot. It almost makes sense that if no one else, Illumination should have her voice Nooshy!
It really isn’t too far off to ask a choreographer to do some acting. For the Japanese dub of Sing 2, Akane Miyazaki, who is known for her choreography, was called in to voice Nooshy.
And do you remember Alvin And The Chipmunks 2007?
The actual choreographer for that film, Rosero “Taffy” McCoy even got his own little scene in that film, where he tells Ian [David Cross] that he’s the choreographer and he hilariously doesn’t even know what that means. It’s your JOB as a huge record executive and tour manager to know what a choreographer is!
Tumblr media
Taffy: It’s dancing.
Ian: Well, then next time just say I’m the dance guy!
Yes, it’s filler, but it’s entertaining filler that highlights the significance of choreographers!
So yeah… That’s my opinion on it all. Feel free to tell me who you think should fill Nooshy’s shoes and what role she could play in Sing 3, if at all!

Breeding Spotlight: Leigh-ping Forward with OTTBs
Tumblr media
Jeff Goodwin and Exactleigh compete at Galway Downs’ Eventing Championships in 2023. Photo by Sherry Stewart.
Taking a glance at any entry list these days, there are quite a few prefixes and suffixes that we have come to know. The ever popular Irish Cooley, Ardeo, and Fernhill, the Belgian Zangersheide Z, the up-and-coming FE, Excel, HSH and Global, and even the Argentinian Solaguayre is on the rise. One could be forgiven for missing a lone “Leigh” here and there.
But not anymore.
In the 2023 edition of the annual Event at Rebecca Farm (Kalispell, MT) — one of the top destination events on the West Coast — there were more “Leigh” horses than any other breeder, trainer, or seller. There were 14 Cooley horses, 10 Fernhill, 7 Ardeo, 6 Z, 4 Excel, 3 FE, and 1 Global.
Squeaking past them all, “Leigh” horses had 15 representatives, from CCI3*-L all the way to Beginner Novice.
Humor abounds in the names of these salwart partners: Pridefulleigh, Mixologeigh, Bankseigh, My Leighona, Casualleigh, Agatha Christeigh, and my personal favorite: Drunk & Disorderleigh.
Where do they come from?
Jil Walton operates JARBA Farms out of Rebecca Farm in Kailspell, MT where she breeds and trains her own homebreds and off the track thoroughbreds. A representative of the 1992 US Olympic Eventing team, she helped USA to a top 10 finish and finished 17th individually as the highest placed American on a self made mare called Patrona.
Embed from Getty Images
Patrona herself was an off-the-tracker who Jil, in partnership with her parents, sourced in Southern California where she grew up. Walton calls her “the beginning of it all.”
“My dad, my mom, and I would pick the ones that didn’t run and turn them into event horses and event them so I’ve been doing that my whole life,” Jil said. “Then I met one of my clients, Leigh Gray. [She] brought a horse to me to event for her [while] she worked at a vet hospital and had access to lots of Thoroughbreds. So [we] started developing a relationship with trainers, and good owners, that wanted them to go on to do something other than just sit in the field.”
Most of the horses carrying the “Leigh” in their name are former racers sourced by Jil herself, and her friend Gray. But it didn’t begin that way.
Among the horses Leigh sent to Jil to be retrained and homed was Truly Triton. A 1992 chestnut gelding out of Coastal Breeze and With Approval, it began as a rehabbing project when he came to Walton with a tendon injury. Over time however, the partnership competed to the highest levels, completing the Kentucky Three-Day Event in 2004 and multiple top 10 finishes at the 4* level. As success came not only to Jil but with the horses Leigh was helping source, Jil felt a touch of inspiration.
“I decided I needed to give Leigh a little bit of credit,” she explains. “So then we started putting the Leigh on the end. I mean, it just kind of caught fire because there’s so many possibilities.”
The name options are pretty excellent (see above!). Indeed, Jil often gets messages with suggestions for Leigh names for future horses down the line.
She credits Leigh with an incredible eye for temperament and her own eye for confirmation, gleaned at her parents’ knees and her own 30+ years of experience. For soundness, she feels nothing can beat a good war horse — Thoroughbreds who have run for many years. Together, she and Leigh work in tandem to not only source successful sport horses but also to find the horse’s own passion.
“I tried to be responsible to the racehorses,” Jil says. “Some of them don’t want to jump. They don’t want to go eventing so we have one barrel racing, we have a couple that are ski-jouring.”
While Jil also breeds some of her own prospects (with the prefix JB for JARBA), her heart is firmly with the Thoroughbreds. The feeling of riding cross country on a horse with a high foundational level of fitness and forward training from their racing careers instills confidence and security. And she feels there is cause to be optimistic for the future of OTTBs in eventing.
“Before I felt like it was an uphill battle, 100%,” she says. “Thoroughbreds are getting so much more attention with the Thoroughbred Makeover and all of that. So I feel like people are more open to them now, which, for a long time, they haven’t been — so that’s rewarding to me.”
Leigh is winding down the non-profit that helped source these fine partners — the Thoroughbred Rehab Center — so there may not be a whole lot more “Leigh” horses coming through the pipeline. Jil herself is still trucking on with her part, having formed new connections and contacts in the racing industry to help retrain and rehome those horses who no longer can or want to race.
In an increasingly global sport where more and more often we see both professional and amateur members sourcing horses from outside our borders, we are seeing less and less of our own American Thoroughbred. While there is nothing wrong with finding quality wherever it may be, by casting a spotlight on our American professionals and trainers, our domestically bred horses can shine as well.
So next time you see that humor filled “Leigh” name, have a chuckle to yourself and maybe, just maybe, find your local OTTB trainer and see if you can find your next partner close to home.
Drop us a line if you know of another deserving barn, breeder, or trainer we can shine a light on!
