Every fun post on here that encourages people to have hobbies/be creative always gets an avalanche of "Some people are poor Karen" type reactions and respectfully, you're all super annoying. I've never lived above the poverty line and this is a list of hobbies I have that were cheap or entirely free:
Read books: Go to the library, lend a book from a friend
knitting, crochet, embroidery: Get some needles from the bargan store and ask around, people have leftovers from projects they'll happily give you. Thrift stores also often carry leftover fabric and other supplies. And talk about your hobby loud enough and an old lady will show up and gift you their whole collection, because there are way more old ladies with a closet full of wool than there are grandchildren who want to take up the hobby.
Origami/paper crafts: get some scrap paper and scissors, watch a youtube tutorial
walking: put on shoes open door
pilates/yoga/etc: get a mat or just use your carpet, watch a youtube tutorial
Houseplants: look online for people that swap plant cuttings. There are always people giving out stuff for free to get you started. If you're nice enough you'll probably get extra
gardening: You're gonna need some space for this one of course but you can just play around with seeds and cuttings from your grocery vegetables.
aquarium keeping is a bit of an obscure one but I got most of my stuff second hand for cheap or free and now I have a few thousand euro worth of material and plants.
drawing/art: You get very far just playing with bargan store materials. I did my entire art degree with mostly those.
writing: Rotate a cow in your head for free
cooking: again one you can make very expensive, but there are many budget recipes online for free. Look for African or Asian shops to get good rice and cheap spices.
Join a non-profit: Cities will have creative organisations who let you use woodworking machines or screen presses or laser cutters or 3D printers etc etc etc for a small fee. Some libraries also lend out materials.
candle making: You need some molds (cheap), wick, two old cooking pots for au bain marie melting and a ton of scrap candles, ask people to keep them aside for you.
a herbarium, flower pressing: Leaves are free, wildflowers too, ask if you can take from peoples gardens.
puzzles: thrift stores, your grandma probably
Citizen science: look for projects in your area or get the iNaturalist app
And lastly and most importantly: Share! Share your supllies, share your knowledge. Surround yourself with other creative people and before you know it someone will give you a pot of homemade jam and when you want to paint your kabinet someone will have leftover paint in just the right color and you can give them a homemade candle in return and everyone is having fun and building skills and friendships and not a cent is exchanged. We have always lived like this, it's what humans are build to do.
And all of it sure beats sitting behind a computer going "No stranger, I refuse to let myself have a good time."
Anyway I'm logging off bc I'm making some badges for a friend who cooked for me and then I'm going to fix some holes in everyones clothes.

can you talk about how you made the costume please 🙏🙏🙏
:D sure!!! putting it under cut bc it's a lot lol
when i got the idea i had absolutely No clue as to how people even go abt cosplays like this, so step 0 was obviously One Billion Youtube Tutorials (this one - it's in polish but has eng subtitles - was my best friend <3 but there's really sooo many for every little aspect of making armor cosplay i owe them my life)
anyway. proceeding. assume every step takes a fuckton of trial and error and at least 3 failed attempts
REFERENCES:
collected all the covers where u can see mb's suit well, some fanarts that interpreted it in ways i liked, the 2 previous mb cosplays i found
PLANNING:
little to no planning (bad idea. btw.)
MATERIALS:
regular long-sleeved shirt+pants+cycling gloves+fanny pack. (sorry murderbot. but the armor piece over its crotch literally looks like a fanny pack)
the armor's made out of smth called EVA foam (similar to yoga mat in terms of texture/stiffness), had to order it from a cosplay-specific online shop
heat gun (i was lucky bc my dad's an amateur handyman and turned out to already have one) bc EVA foam's much easier to form+less absorbent when heated
contact glue (also known as contact cement) for glueing the armor pieces whole, superglue for details here and there
straps (the kind u use in backpacks etc)+plastic buckles+velcro. so much velcro. i'm never hand-sewing thru velcro again
wood glue+smth called glossy universal lacquer (p sure it's just car paint.) for painting
transparent plastic mask + rit dye for dyeing it (bc i couldn't find one that was already dark 😔)
tape+cling wrap for patterns
MAKING PATTERNS FOR ARMOR:
okay so. you wrap [Given Body Part] in cling wrap (yeah just regular kitchen cling wrap). put tape (i used duct tape at first but switched to masking tape bc it's cheaper) all over. draw, roughly, the shape you want the armor piece to be. cut urself out, cut away the excess edges, bam! pattern. like these:
Tumblr media
(the chest piece was the tough part. i wanted the characteristic rounded shape so i didn't use cling wrap there, it was a lot of trial-and-error with cutting shapes out of paper, putting them against my chest, adjusting things, rinse&repeat.)
(also, the helmet - for the face shield i got these v cheap plastic masks that were advertised as lawn mowing masks (???), then tried to dye them black with Rit Dye for synthetics. that was a Whole Ordeal & my best try still turned out too see-through & more orange-tinted than i liked, but i was out of time so (shrug emoji). & for the pattern, i put on the mask + a beanie before wrapping my head in cling wrap dkjfgn)
i cut the patterns into shapes that could be flattened & copied them onto paper (to be able to transfer them onto foam more easily):
Tumblr media
ACTUALLY MAKING THE PIECES:
the annoying part: outlining all patterns on the foam and cutting them out with a box cutter. This Sucks. then, shaping them with the heat gun. This Doesn't Work As Well As It's Supposed To. then, glueing the pieces together with contact glue. This Takes Ages.
(& it's like. near-impossible glueing them so the seams don't look terribly obvious 😭 i'm sure there's a way to cover it up well, but the method i tried (foam clay) worked Eh at best)
oh right also the. thingy around the neck. that's just a tube made out of some leggings i was gonna throw out. filled with a bunch of cotton i stole from a pillow. improvise adapt overcome
ATTACHING IT ALL:
That's Velcro, Baby 👍 it's either glued onto the foam or sewed onto the straps Everywhere. it's how the forearm & thigh & lower leg pieces close, how the chest & back pieces connect, how the face shield's made removable. Velcro All The Way Down.
the 2 exceptions: the thigh pieces are attached to a belt with some straps bc they kept sliding off; & the tiny armor pieces on my feet have a loop of string glued on the inside that i just pulled my shoelaces through
PAINTING:
the issue with EVA foam is that it absorbs stuff v easily, so before painting it i had to prime it (aka cover it in 2-4 protective layers of wood glue). then for actual painting, i sprayed all the pieces with 2 layers of universal lacquer (outside on some cardboard ofc). here it is all drying in the garage (bc it stank 💀):
Tumblr media
and that's it!!!! done!!!! a bit over a month of work in total :]

I read an article the other day on how cooking for one is an act of self-love for us single folk and I have to agree.
I have this routine these days. Through the first half of the week I scroll through recipes, typically on the Recipe Tin Eats site. I search for things I've never heard of that are common in faraway places and I tag them. One-by-one I add items to my online shopping cart. By Thursday I place the order for home delivery and then first thing on Saturday morning as the sun is just rising (a decision I regret every week), the groceries get delivered.
In the last six months I've tried new ingredients, new recipes, new cooking methods. There are spices I'd never even heard of before that I'm now comfortable using and recipes for foods from places I didn't know existed that are slowly creeping into my weekly repertoire. My tiny kitchen is now too small for the appliances and utensils that I own. Food has become too big in my life.
It's a weekly routine that I look forward to. There's something soothing about it that I can't quite put my finger on, but I know that it works. Meal prep for work lunches is no longer grilled or shredded chicken with a garden salad.
I mention it today because I woke to a wave of grief and emotion over the men that have come and gone from my life over the years, and I was shocked to find myself feeling that way. But then it clocked what feminine things were occurring in my body at this time of the month and I shook it off. I shook it off because the feeling is mostly foreign these days and I'm so confident it will pass as this stage of the monthly cycle passes. The loneliness and lack of love doesn't drown me as frequently or quite severely as it used to. My life has become this solitary little routine that seems to feed my soul and keep it nourished. The cooking and the preparation seems to be a big part of that and I'm not really sure why or how. I just know that every weekend I prep for the week ahead and the learning, exploration, and then the reward at the end really is such an act of self-love that it has a grounding quality to it. It settles me.
The level of acceptance I have for myself and who I am is so high these days. I still see my flaws and I still work at them, but I also am unapologetically who I am. When I'm not at work, even though I'm mostly alone, I now routinely do all these little things that make me content in my solo little bubble. I wonder at times how a man would ever fit into my life now. What man would be worth disrupting my peace when it took so long (and so much money on therapy...) to create?
So it's a simple thing, this cooking routine, but it is an act of self-love. In the madness that is this new year and the world right now, it's a practice in mindfulness that doesn't involve sitting on a yoga mat with my eyes closed and it gets me better results. It turns out that keeping your body nourished can also be a way to keep your soul nourished.

So I painted my yoga mat... I'm including the process and credits below the cut.
So, I have been wanting a cork yoga mat for a while. Do I need one? No. Will I pick up yoga again for a month and then quit? Hopefully not, but likely yes.
Every time I get back into yoga, I start looking at cork yoga mats because they're grippier and also very very pretty. The only problem is... they are friggin' expensive.
Tumblr media
I first was attracted to cork yoga mats because of some of the really amazing designs, but I can't afford this shit. Instead, I settled for a cheaper cork yoga mat that is plain, and I thought that if I saved up enough money and still cared about yoga enough to buy a fancy one, I would.
But then I got to thinking... could I paint my yoga mat? And the answer is yes, yes I can.
I originally got the idea when I read online of other people doing this to their rubber and PVC mats, so you do not need a cork mat to do this!
Buying the Mat
Even an inexpensive cork yoga mat is still far more than I've ever spent on one before, so I had to choose wisely. I ended up choosing the Gaiman cork yoga mat, which is about 5mm in thickness. It's roughly 68 x 24 inches. One thing I had read is that cork mats can get quite heavy, but this one is pretty lightweight while still being cushy. I was really tempted to use it right away, but I didn't want it to get dirty or oily before I painted it.
Tumblr media
The Design
I am not an artist. I cannot draw well enough to freehand something confidently. What I do have is a Cricut Maker. If you don't know what a Cricut Maker is, it's an ill-advised purchase that I got secondhand and is actively ruining my budget. Depending on the model, it can cut out designs on a variety of materials, such as vinyl or infusible ink and can even tool leather. I used cardstock for this project to cut out stencils.
There are many free SVG templates out there as well as images created by other Cricut Makers that are only .99 each. There are many, many other places where you can purchase designs as well, or you can create your own! I am not talented enough to create my own design.
I tried several free SVGs, didn't like them, and then stumbled on this on Design Space, the Circut Maker program/shop. To quote Macklemore, "But shit, it was 99 cents!"
Tumblr media
The image was designed by GlamSVG by Emylia and the inspiration came from an embroidery pattern by Emily June, which you can find HERE. I went through an embroidery phase during quarantine, and I have mine hung on the wall. I look at it daily.
Tumblr media
I had to resize this image to fit my yoga mat, which ended up being 24 x 36". Because I cut the stencil out of cardstock, I had to segment everything into 8.5x11 pieces, cut, weed, and then piece it all back together on the mat. Once I had all the pieces, I stuck them to transfer paper to keep the floating segments in place. I organized and labeled everything so I could put it back together again easily. It looked like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once it was assembled, I sprayed the backs with temporary adhesive so the stencils would stay down. I removed the transfer paper and began painting the outline. I did end up losing a couple of the floating pieces (see the letter O and the leaf on the far right side), so I had to freehand some of it. Overall, the stencil turned out great!
I had a variety of success with the temporary adhesive. Because I bought a more inexpensive mat, I soon discovered how not durable it is. The 'temporary' adhesive pulled up small pieces of cork after I removed the stencil. This was partially my fault, since I didn't pull up the stencil as I went. Still, there were pieces that were going to lift anyway. This revealed that the cork is only one layer, but fortunately, each piece of cork that lifted was quite small and unnoticeable, and the thread behind it matched in color. It wasn't ideal, but I could live with it.
Some of the cardstock became permanent fixtures on the mat, which I then had to paint over. Also, some of the stencil didn't stick at all, so I had minor bleed through. Problems all around! But it still turned out nicely!
Tumblr media
I need to preface that I have never painted anything before. Well, that's a lie. I've painted a wall, and six years ago I had a Bob Ross themed birthday party. The SO, however, is the son of an artist and taught me about mixing acrylic. His first tip was to test out colors. I used Paint.Net and came up with this mock-up:
Tumblr media
I knew I wanted the heart anatomy to be shades of red, so that was easy. The flowers were harder. I tried my favorite colors, like yellow and purple, but it didn't sit right visually. I turned to Canva Color Wheel to help me find complementary colors to the shades of red I wanted to use. That's how I came up with the pretty blues. To mix the colors, I used ColorHexa to show me the percentage of CYMK I needed.
Here are some progress shots:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm super happy with how it turned out! My color mixing didn't turn out exactly like the mock up, but I love the results. The last step was to let it dry for at least 48 hours. Then I set it with Mod Podge Acrylic Sealer.
I chose Mod Podge since it's non-toxic, and I will be putting my face on it. Also, my dogs walk on it while I do yoga. They think it belongs to them. :) Knowing now that there is only 1 layer of cork, I do worry how it'll hold up to dog nails over time.
Lastly, the real test was to see if it would roll, and it does! So now I just need a yoga strap, and I'm good to go!

i’m officially back to my flat and back to normal from tomorrow. i’m gonna take the afternoon to unpack and hang out with my boyfriend and relax, and get back to business on wednesday. so here’s the plan for then:
a lie-in - i’ve spent weeks going to bed late and getting up early with my cat because my parents’ house isn’t cat-proofed. i am TIRED so first thing i do is sleep
stretches and maybe a walk - i haven’t worked out in weeks so i’ll take it easy, but my new yoga mat needs christening and i really need to stretch my legs and get a bit of fresh air
some healthy food - i haven’t been eating UNhealthily but i could do with getting back to normal. fruit, smoothies, oat bars, lentil chips, bread and hummus, loads of water, a healthy dinner, etc etc etc
work - i’ve had a few days off and i don’t have any work scheduled but i’m going to get back to posting on linkedin, sending out applications, and getting back in the swing of being in office
full shower and skincare routine before bed - i’ve had a limited selection of my bathroom bits with me so i’m definitely doing a face mask and using all my favourite stuff
i’m always a bit homesick for the first few days when i go back so having a nice routine to get back to really helps. i did a bit of online shopping and sent it there too so i have some presents from myself to look forward to, and obviously i’m excited to see my boyfriend too ❣️
it’s so nice being out of my routine for a few weeks and not feeling totally derailed. i’ve put on a bit of weight and my skin’s not great and i’m tired but i feel like i have the tools to get back to normal quickly 🦋

**Printify: Revolutionizing Custom Products for Creators and Entrepreneurs**
In a world where personalization reigns supreme, Printify has emerged as a revolutionary force, empowering creatives, entrepreneurs, and businesses of all sizes to bring their custom product dreams to life. Whether you're a designer looking to sell your art, a brand wanting to expand into merchandise, or just someone passionate about creating personalized items, Printify is your gateway to endless possibilities. What makes this platform truly unique?
Let's dive into the Printify phenomenon and explore why it's reshaping the future of custom products.
### The Print-On-Demand PowerhouseAt its core, Printify is a print-on-demand (POD) platform. But unlike many others in the space, it goes beyond just providing a service—it builds a comprehensive ecosystem where creators thrive. The platform connects you with over 90 global print providers, offering an impressive range of customizable products from apparel and accessories to home décor and lifestyle items. You can easily upload your design, choose your preferred product, and set up your store without any upfront costs or inventory risks.
**Why does this matter?** Traditional retail models often require bulk orders and warehousing, a massive financial hurdle for startups and small businesses. Printify eliminates this obstacle, allowing you to only pay for what you sell. No waste, no risk.
### Unmatched Product Variety and QualityWhat sets Printify apart from the competition is its vast selection of products. From custom t-shirts and hoodies to phone cases, mugs, and even yoga mats, Printify has something for everyone. But it's not just about variety; the platform takes pride in offering high-quality products that both sellers and customers love.Whether you're looking to launch an eco-friendly clothing line or offer quirky, personalized gifts, Printify's catalog ensures you can cater to niche markets while maintaining a high standard of quality. Plus, with the ability to choose between different print providers, you have the flexibility to pick the best fit for your business based on location, pricing, and print methods.
### Global Reach with Local FulfillmentOne of Printify’s standout features is its global network of print providers, strategically located to ensure fast and cost-effective shipping for customers around the world. You can choose print providers based on their region to reduce shipping times and costs, making it easier to reach international customers without the headaches of complex logistics.Imagine running a business from your home in New York while seamlessly delivering products to customers in Germany, Australia, or Japan—all without dealing with the hassle of international shipping. Printify makes that possible.
### Seamless Integration with Major E-commerce PlatformsLaunching your own online store has never been easier, thanks to Printify’s smooth integrations with major e-commerce platforms like Shopify, Etsy, eBay, and WooCommerce. This enables creators to set up their stores in a matter of minutes, automate the fulfillment process, and focus on growing their brand without getting bogged down by technical complexities. For those looking to monetize their creativity, the Printify system is a dream come true. There’s no need for deep tech knowledge or hiring developers. With a few clicks, your custom products can be listed in your shop, ready to be sold to customers across the globe.
### Low-Risk, High-Reward: The Business Model for Modern EntrepreneursStarting a business often comes with financial risks. Traditional business models require investment in inventory, storage, and shipping, creating a financial burden before any sales are made. Printify’s print-on-demand model completely flips this on its head. You can launch your brand with minimal investment, as you only produce items when customers order them. This low-risk model allows creators to experiment with different designs, products, and strategies without worrying about unsold inventory. It’s the perfect testing ground for entrepreneurs who want to explore new markets or expand their product lines.
### Personalization Meets SustainabilityIn an era of eco-conscious consumers, sustainability is a key concern for any brand. Printify aligns with this movement by offering eco-friendly product options, such as organic cotton apparel and sustainably sourced home goods. By enabling on-demand printing, Printify also reduces waste commonly associated with traditional mass production. This means that as a business owner, you can cater to the growing demand for sustainable products while maintaining your brand’s ethos and values. Whether you're passionate about ethical fashion or eco-friendly home décor, Printify’s options help you stay on brand and on trend.
### Printify’s Impact on Creators and Small BusinessesFor creators, Printify is more than just a platform—it’s a launchpad for entrepreneurial success. The platform enables artists, illustrators, photographers, and influencers to transform their creative ideas into tangible products. Instead of waiting for galleries or stores to showcase their work, creators can take control of their careers by building their own online brands with Printify’s tools.Similarly, small businesses and startups find Printify’s low-cost model attractive as it allows them to expand into new product categories without the financial burden of inventory. This versatility opens up endless avenues for growth, from seasonal collections to limited edition drops and niche market explorations.
### The Future of CustomizationAs the demand for personalized products continues to rise, Printify stands at the forefront of a growing movement that emphasizes creativity, entrepreneurship, and flexibility. It’s not just about providing custom apparel or merchandise—it’s about giving individuals and businesses the power to craft their own stories, one product at a time.Whether you're an artist turning your designs into sellable products, a business owner looking to offer unique branded items, or a creative entrepreneur dreaming of launching your own online store, Printify provides the tools, the network, and the freedom to succeed in today’s fast-paced, ever-evolving marketplace.
### ConclusionPrintify is redefining what it means to create and sell custom products in the digital age. With its easy-to-use platform, diverse product selection, and global fulfillment options, it offers an unparalleled opportunity for creators and entrepreneurs to bring their visions to life without the traditional constraints of inventory and upfront costs. The future of e-commerce is here, and with Printify, it’s more creative, flexible, and accessible than ever before.
