Liszt rapsody No.2.

The town didn't have its madman. For ten years this established vacancy was occupied by the lousy bell ringer Kuzya. Once, the son of a bell ringer has drowned, and since then Kuzya considered water to be the vomit of the devil. He refused from washing and never went to the other side of the river. He whispered to the blue-eyed he encountered: "devil spat into your eyes". He crossed his glass thrice before the tea drinking. Black-eyed and brown-eyed shopkeepers were feeding him. Kuzya has died recently and the townspeople were examining the oldman in a worn out glossy cloak, thinking if he is suitable for the role of the mad.

The boys were already running after him, shouting: "chizhik, chizhik". Long ago, before the elder brothers of these boys were born, the oldman was a music teacher. The nickname "chizhik" was not given to him by the children. The oldman's wife was dying, he exchanged the piano for the butter and invited a professor from Moscow. The wife died and the oldman took a job of a pianist at the cinematograph. Between the two performances of "The fairy tale of love dear" the pianist was given an envelope with the blurry purple stamp. The regiment commander was advising that both oldman's sons, red army servicemen, had died heroes. The oldman accurately put the paper into the envelope and took a seat at the piano. But at the most pathetic moment he started to play chizhik. The film went on without music and cinematograph director was consoling the oldman as he could during the whole evening. A week later the director dismissed him. The military commissariat obtained a relief payment for the oldman.

Every morning he, a huge man with the swollen face, was walking through the town leaning on his stick, breathing heavily. The lion heads - the clasps of his cloak - were shining. Every morning the oldman was cleaning their muzzles with chalk. He was moving past the gardens chopped for firewood, past the goats eating away the mobilization posters, past the wilted vegetable plots fenced by the barbwire, past the churches not yet altered into cinematographs and fiercely raising the crumpled breasts of their doms to the sky. He was going to the market.

The market was renamed into "The Square of struggle against speculation". The struggle with speculation took place there. Once a week the whistles and the market women made a squeal. The gymnasium coats, the sacks of tabacco and striped sailor shirts were flying over the fences. The present and the future owners of these things were jumping after them. The parrot who pulled out happinness was hiding at the backstreet.

And at the abandoned market place, among the painted stools and facetted wooden spinning tops - the roulettes of the market Monte Carlo - "for five - twenty five, for twenty five - a hundred twenty five. The answer up to two millions" - the huge sad man stood motionless. His story was well-known in the town and even the police didn't take him during the raids. And when once the young investigation agent, an ardent collector of Carters and Pinkertons, conveyed the oldman to his chief, the chief asked: "but why did you bring this...Liszt?.." Again, it wasn't the chief criminal investigator who came up with this name. The oldman has sold the piano but kept the grammophone. Long ago, when the wife and children were not only alive but cheerful, he was winding up the grammophone every day. Gymnasium students, shop sellers, firemen and cooks were gathering beneath the window of their appartment - the oldman was entertaining the town. In the year of war he bought a record which became favorite in the family. It was the Liszt rapsody No. 2. It has been played only twice - during the urgent gathering of the elder son to the front the disc was swiped from the table and smashed. The oldman couldn't repeat this proud, powerful and young melody, but he remembered it exactly like this.

In the evenings the oldman was bringing the chair out to the street. He was recollecting life looking at the narrow green strip of the dawn. He felt that some happinness has slipped out of his hands and shattered. He was recalling his sons and singing two or three bars he remembered of the rapsody. There was neither rapsody, nor sons. The grey dust was lying on the oldman's boots quietly.

Gradually he began to think more of a rapsody than about the sons and the wife. The oldman thought that Liszt will bring his family back. He began to search for the record. He renewed the old and strarted the new acquaintances. He was bending over the stalls of the ragmen and market vendors, groaning. His search was painfully long - may be a thousand days. That's how the town got to know about the existence of Liszt and his rapsody.

One wet and windy autumn day he found the record. He was gasping with happinness. They were asking a kilo of sugar for the record. It was a crazy price, but the seller was notified in andvance that the buyer was crazy himself. The oldman worried. He offered pressed tea, a copy of Rubens, a pair of boots. There was no sugar in the city. The oldman was affraid to loose the rapsody. He begged the seller to come to his apartment and choose anything for exchange. The seller refused. The oldman besought him to wait - he ran home to ask his neighbors for sugar. The seller agreed. The oldman hobbled towards his house. After two hours he came back to the market, hot and sweating. He didn't get the sugar. The disk owner disappeared. The oldman sat on a stone and began to cry. A mathematics teacher of the unified labor school led him home. He never came back to the market. Two days later the mathematics teacher found him delirious - the oldman had caught a cold. He was raving about the rapsody. There was an old grammophone in the corner of the room, surrounded by the pile of broken discs. The teacher rushed for a doctor. The jolly doctor came, the one whose patients ran away. A year ago he came to the town as a doctor of psychiatry, but the drunken hospital guard had scattered all the insane and there was no one there to collect them. They disappeared. The doctor became a therapist. At that time venerologists were treating the spainsh flue, pharmacists were trepanning the skulls. The doctor put a thermometer and shook his head.

"We'll get better, pop", he said briskly. "A little aspirin..."

"Rapsody", gasped the oldman.

"What..."

The mathematician told the story of the oldman. The doctor looked at the patient with interest. The oldman's swollen belly was slightly trembling.

- Liszt...- pronounced the oldman crying, - Liszt...- and he folded his blue heavy hands prayerfully. The cramp of suffering was running along his face like a lightning. The doctor came in the morning. The mathematician looked at him timidly with his reddened desperate eyes. The doctor kept himself like a wizard. He took a thermometer out of his sleeve. He felt the pulse. The oldman was in full consciousness and kept silent.

- Pop, said the doctor leaping back from the bed and exulting, - Liszt rapsody No.2, - and he took the black disc from behind. The oldman's heavy breath interrupted. He opened his eyes widely. His body was trembling in small convulsions. The doctor turned the grammophone handle and wiped the dust from the cloth turntable. He placed the disc and pushed the lever. The needle started to hiss and the first bars of the waltz "On the hills of Manchuria" threw the teacher of mathematics up from his chair. He rushed to the grammophone but the doctor stood in his way. The teacher clutched at the doctor's shoulders.

What - are you, - there was a gurgling noise in the throat of a teacher and the big drops of sweat appeared on his forehead.

- Now, said the doctor, carefully taking the teacher's hands off his shoulders. - Take it easy. You are only a mathematician.

Last night I had the pleasure of vending at Summer Sweat!! It was an event planned by my friend Johnny Q. I have been playing WoW since the beta for Vanilla and gone through many phases of enjoying PvE aspect (including a raiding guild), but at this point I only play for RP and have no interest in game play. I prefer Discord text RP for 1:1 or small group scenes. I generally only login to game for RP events or by request.

For text RP, I am very bad about forum style/casual post RP and will generally lose track of it quickly. I also try to stray from forum style post on Tumblr for the same reason. The best way to RP with me to set a date/time to both login to Discord or game and set aside several hours to write out a scene together.

I’m a very fast typer and tend to do multi-para for scene sets only, and then fall into a more natural rhythm as the scene plays out. I do not ask that partners match my post length.

Back to Bangalore

8 months after returning to my home in Paris, I came back to India. I lived in Bangalore and took pictures of its inhabitants : tailors, rickshaw drivers, food truck merchants, flower and coconut juice sellers, housekeeper, ... I decided to search for the indians I had photographed.

Taking pictures enabled me to create a link with locals, know more about the culture and appreciate their kindness, honesty and generosity. It gave a meaning to my stay in India. Giving them back their own picture was important to me and was a way to thank them.

8 months later, I was back in Bangalore, walking around Ulsoor lake wearing my kurta just as if I’d never left the country.

And.. there he was.. The coconut juice seller !! just next to the Ashram, in front of the rickshaw drivers, standing at the same place.

When I gave him the picture, he smiled. He was amused to see his face printed on a picture and showed it to the people around him, laughing. As little can my efforts are, I could feel he was grateful. This picture which was mine, is now his, and this can’t make me happier. Being able to give back in return what people offered me.

Underneath, is the last picture I took with my camera before going back to France in April 2017. He is the watchman of one of the apartment residency next to my flat. Each residency has one, two, three or even more watchmen whose role is to keep the building safe and run properly : open the gate when a car comes, wash the cars, water the plants, do mechanics, note down on a register book the contact details of any unknown person who wants to come inside, etc. Those tasks don’t sound very fun but it is always nice to come back home feeling welcomed. At night, when I was going back home late, they were sleeping in their chair so I tried not to wake them up. I like seeing them standing with pride in their uniforms.

There was a district where I went several times to spend afternoons with families, drink chai and eat chicken biryani with them. They had noted down their adresses so that I’d be able to send them their pictures by post. I was afraid that my photographs would get lost and never get in their hands so I didn’t send any. I was feeling guilty not to send them the pictures.

Last time I had seen them was 8 months ago. While I was walking and trying to remember the way to go to their house, I was worried about their reaction.

First person I saw was Reena. “We were talking about you yesterday wondering what you had done with the pictures.” Reena is 18 now. She’s the one I was meeting most of the time after her classes with her aunts, grand mother and neighbours. She speaks english like any schooled kid so it was easier to communicate with her than with the +40 year old generation who didn’t have the chance to learn english at her age. I was happy to see how curious she still is as she kept asking me questions about my trip to India, my family and friends and when I was planning to come back again to Bangalore.

This young lady is Reena’s aunt. She carries her niece in her arms. She can’t have children and I doubt that she’d get married one day. It is not insignificant that she is standing on her knees. She can’t walk on her feet, half of her legs are paralyzed. The only way for her to move is to crawl on her knees.

I was lucky to see again Reena’s grand mother, Ambica. I was surprised that she could recognize me as she can barely see. She used to take my hand and take me to her “house” which is actually a room, to drink chai with her family.

And I will say it again and again : no matter how wealthy they are, indian women are all very elegant. To me, there is no such beauty than indian women. Colourful saris combined with golden jewels always perfectly fit to anyone.

First time I met them, kids and aunties were happy to play the game of posing in front of my camera. The pink-blue-white sari lady was showing to the girl how she should pose - like a “real” model.

The children were all very excited by this improvised photoshoot and suggested to the two little ones in the middle how they should stand.

I found my route to their street. The kids were all surrounding me, grabbing the pictures and laughing. I wish I could have photographed once again the five beautiful aunties sited at the doorsteps but not all of them were there and some didn’t want me to take pictures again.

It is frustrating not being able to photograph what I have in mind and feel like a super National Geographic photographer, but I guess what’s most important is what I feel inside. I may not be able to share it but this precious moment is now printed in my mind, and that’s the only thing that really counts. Yes, i’m a bit sensitive.. loul

The lady drinking chai is the one wearing the pink-blue-white sari on the previous pictures. She looked at the photo and laughed saying she hadn’t arranged her hair that day.

I continued my walk and recognized the yellow house on my picture. The old lady was sitting in her chair like the first time we met. She was chatting with her neighbours or friends. “Namaskara”, I showed her the pictures. She was so surprised and happy that she took my hands and blessed me.

Even if the picture is all blurred, I like the fact that she has the same posture, right arm on the armrest, wearing her golden bracelets and nose ring. You can see that her son (on the first picture) made some painting work and replaced the pink by the blue colour.

I couldn’t find all my “models” like this boy as he and his dad moved to another market to sell chickens. The man who explained this to me was able to meet him again and give him the picture.

My investigation was not quite finished. I still had to found another boy. He had asked me to take a picture of him after he had seen me taking the portrait of the mechanic.

I like how he, shyly, strikes the pose. In the street where I photographed him, I asked a girl if she knew him.

“Yes, come ! come !” I followed her. She led me to the playing field where boys were playing football. She shouted the boy’s name and look at the picture with a big smile on his face. All of his friends ran and circled him to see what was going on. Then, they all jumped at the top of the grid shouting “picture ! picture !” to have a picture of them too.

You can see my little boy wearing the exact same blue and red sleeved t-shirt, his photo in his right hand, fourth position from the right.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t give the picture of two men. One of them was a “security guard” of a small shop selling fabrics near commercial street where I used to go every week.

I remember the minute before I took the picture, he straighten his back, put his glasses on, standing with pride. I recognized the shop, showed the photo and asked to the merchant where he was. “He is no more”. He told me he couldn’t give the picture to anyone as his family was living in Mysore.

I found again the small pink painted house. I knock at the door. An old man comes, looks at me with a strange look on his face and says something in kannanda I can’t understand. I show him the picture. His face suddenly fills with emotion : “My grandson!” He turns his face towards the room and shouts names. Three small little men come, hiding themselves behind their grandpa’. The man is very proud to stand with his grandsons for a new picture that I will give them next time.

Snapdeal Joins International Trademark Association

Indian e-commerce marketplace Snapdeal has announced that it has become a member of the International Trademark Association (INTA). The INTA is a global not-for-profit advocacy association, comprising of 7,200 members across 187 countries, primarily, brand owners and professionals, which is dedicated to supporting trademarks and related intellectual property to foster consumer trust, economic growth, and innovation. The group works towards protecting and promoting the rights of trademark owners and supports efforts for the development of trademark law and appropriate legislation furthering this aim. “Snapdeal is committed to collaborating with the right stakeholders to address the issue of trademark counterfeiting. Snapdeal’s association with INTA will allow us to share industry insights and technical know-how in the global fight against those infringing intellectual property rights,” a Snapdeal spokesperson said. This follows Snapdeal’s efforts to counter trademark infringement on its site via its ‘Brand Shield’ and ‘Brand Registry’ programmes, which offer a single point of contact to report potentially infringing products, and allow sellers to register their brands on the Snapdeal, respectively.

Rubik’s Cube Owners Puzzled After Losing EU Trademark

Rubik’s Brand Ltd, the owner of the brand of the ubiquitous 3D puzzle, has lost its latest bid to regain its EU trademark over the shape of the Rubik’s Cube. While this trademark over the shape had been granted in 1999, the EU’s Intellectual Property Office cancelled the same in 2017. This decision had been based on the ruling of the European Court of Justice in a case brought by German toy maker Simba Toys GmbH, where it was held that EU trademark law did not allow the company to be granted a monopoly on technical solutions or functional characteristics of its product. Rubik’s Brand appealed that decision, moving the case to the EU General Court in Luxembourg, which, however, upheld the decision to pull the trademark. This ruling is appealable one more time. However, for now, this means that the 45-year-old puzzle’s shape alone is not sufficient to protect it from being copied.

Trademark Refused to Vegan Deli, Then Granted to Nestlé

Herbivorous Butcher, a vegan deli and specialty food shop in Minneapolis, is taking on Swiss food processing conglomerate Nestlé and the US Patent and Trademark Office over the trademark “The Vegan Butcher”. The deli, opened in 2016, sells vegan substitute meats and cheese, and has been using the phrase “Vegan Butcher” to market the same. In 2017, the owners, sister-and brother team Aubry and Kale Walch, applied for a trademark for the phrase, but their application was denied, with the USPTO holding that the phrase could not be registered as a trademark because it was “merely descriptive”. However, when Nestlé later applied for the same trademark, seeking to use it to market Sweet Earth Foods, a San Francisco maker of plant-based snacks and meals that it bought in 2017, the USPTO granted the same. Herbivorous Butcher is now challenging the registration of the trademark granted to Nestlé. The owners claim that they are seeking a decision that either allows them to continue using the phrase, or one that keeps the phrase in the public domain for free use in the growing plant-based foods marketplace, which is now worth almost $4.5 billion. The dispute, which began in June, could go on for another year, if a settlement between the parties isn’t reached.

BRAND LICENSING UPDATES

Sony Announces Global Licensing Program for Jumanji Franchise

The Consumer Products division of American entertainment company Sony Pictures has announced a global licensing and merchandising program for the upcoming fantasy adventure film Jumanji: The Next Level. Video game publisher Outright Games, toy companies Funko and Lanard Toys, and licensing companies Bioworld, Fifth Sun, and The Noble Collection, are among those granted licenses to the “Jumanji” brand. Products including replicas of the “Jumanji” board game, character Pop! dolls, an immersive video game and other collectibles, t-shirts, sportswear, and sleepwear are slated to be released to market and celebrate the Jumanji franchise, and will be available worldwide ahead of the premiere of the film.

New Rick and Morty Pet Products to be Launched by CN and SilverPaw

Cartoon Network Enterprises, the global licensing and merchandising arm of the popular American television channel, has partnered with the pet company SilverPaw to create a range of pet products based on the animated science fiction sitcom Rick and Morty. The new collection will boast of exclusive products including dog beds, chew toys, collars, pet apparel, leashes, and treats influenced by the show’s characters. These ‘Rick and Morty’ pet products, ranging from $9.99 to $49.99, will be available across retailers in North America including Hot Topic, FYE, BoxLunch, and SilverPaw, and online. SilverPaw has previously collaborated with pop culture brands like Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and Hello Kitty.

US Pizza Chain Pieology to Set Foot in China

California-based pizza chain Pieology has announced a franchising deal with a Shanghai-based firm led by a group of Stanford University alumni, TZG Partners, to expand its footprint to China. In what it terms as “a major strategic alliance”, Pieology will seek to leverage TZG’s business experience with building and investing in high-growth China-related businesses, in a bid to rapidly expand and establish itself in the Chinese market. The pizza chain has been growing domestically and internationally, with more than 130 restaurants in 22 US states and internationally. Pieology founder and chairman Carl Chang envisions Pieology becoming “a global destination for great fast casual pizza”.

DOMAIN NAME DISPUTE UPDATES

Walmart’s Vudu Claims Cybersquatting over Domain Name Registered Before Vudu Even Existed

Vudu, a streaming video subsidiary of American retail giant Walmart, filed a cybersquatting complaint against the owner of the domain name “vudo.com”. The problem, however, is that the owner had registered the domain name in 1995—nine years before Vudu was enough founded. Vudu’s complaint is ludicrous, and was held as such by the a World Intellectual Property Organization panel, because it is impossible to prove that the domain name owner had registered the domain name with the intent to target a brand that was, at the time, non-existent. The Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP), a process established for resolution of domain name disputes, clearly requires that the trademark rights of a complainant must predate the registration of the domain name in dispute. The Panel held accordingly, saying that “at the time of registration the Respondent could not have been attacking a trademark that did not exist and was not in contemplation for years to come”.

The Brexit Party Locks Horns with Anti-Brexit Campaign Group over thebrexitparty.com

Led By Donkeys, an ant-Brexit campaign group, has sent offered to sell the domain name thebrexitparty.com, which it bought earlier this year, to Nigel Farage, the British politician who leads the Brexit Party. The group has claimed £1m for the domain name, with the selling price rising by £50,000 each day, which the group claims will be donated to an immigrant support charity. The Brexit Party has sent a legal letter to the group asking it to take down the Brexit Party logo from the site, which, according to the letter, and to transfer the domain name to the Party. While the logos have been removed, the group has refused to transfer the domain name, which it had initially bought to challenge Mr Farage’s party during the European Parliament elections in May.

GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION UPDATES

Scottish Whisky Wins Battle Against Australian Drinks Maker

The Scotch Whisky Association, the trade organisation that represents the Scotch whisky industry, has won its case against D’Aquino Bros Pty Ltd, an Australian drinks maker that was selling a product labelled “Scotch”, but was actually made in Australia. The Association filed the suit after an investigation by the Australian Broadcasting Company, which found that Australian stores were selling fake imported spirits under the label of “Scotch”. Called ‘Black Scot’ and carrying a “Product of Scotland” claim, the spirit was analysed in an international laboratory and found to lack the “unique chemical compounds” that identify a true Scotch. The Association enforced its international geographical indication over the term “Scotch”, and the Federal Court in Melbourne ruled in its favour. D’Aquino Bros Pty Ltd, which had also been found to be selling Australian-brewed products labelled as ‘tequila’, a Mexican spirit also protected by geographical indication laws, has no ceased distribution and has gone into liquidation.

I’ve just returned from my first trip to Europe and the United Kingdom. It was a whirlwind adventure that took me through 9 cities and 7 countries, on 10 planes, 13 trains, 6 taxies, and 4 bike hiring schemes.

I enjoyed the cosy pubs of London, saw the très grand monuments of Paris, experienced the superior bicycle infrastructure of Berlin and Copenhagen, and was moved by the sad history of Kraków in Poland. It was a trip filled with hundreds of memories I’ll keep for the rest of my life. It was also a trip that brought many practicalities to the fore.

Things I wish I had known beforehand and hadn’t stumbled upon in my research. Stuff I think others would benefit from before embarking on their own Europe adventure, whether it’s part of an organised group like a Contiki tour, or self-guided. Here are my top 17 tips for having a hassle-free and amazing time in Europe:

Gear

1. Wear hard-wearing, quick-dry travel clothing

The sort of clothing you’d find at an outdoors shop, as it’s just plain practical. We didn’t exclusively carry this sort of clothing on our trip – we had jeans, cotton t-shirts, and so on.

These garments needed washing after a time and a go in the tumble drier. About 6 hours of the whole trip was spent sitting in laundromats waiting for waschmaschinen and kleider trockner (German for washing machine and clothes dryer ). Don’t say you don’t learn anything here!

Synthetic and merino wool outdoorsy clothes can be washed in the shower or hotel basin and dry very quickly. The best thing about merino is it takes a lot to get smelly, so you can wear it over and over.

2. Choose a backpack rather than suitcase

You can always tell the suitcase totters when you disembark onto a busy train station platform. They’re the ones struggling along, trying to make their case stable on two wheels, while you try and push in front of them. With a backpack, you’ll be much more agile and stairs and escalators will be fair game.

4. Invest in a good neck pillow

We flew Etihad. They supplied very basic neck pillows in economy. Very basic. I’m sure a quality neck pillow would have added a few more hours of sleep to our cumulative 48 hours in the air.

Money

5. Always have cash on you

Cash is becoming less commonly used in Australia. What, with our obsession with plastic, PayPass, and now Apple Pay and so on? That doesn’t mean the rest of the world is in the same place. I asked one shop assistant in Germany why people don’t use their cards as much. She responded, ‘They’re Germans. They like to see their money’. Fair enough. Always have some notes and coins on you*.

* When you’re carrying Kroners, you’ll feel extra rich as everything is in 100s and 1000s. Until you calculate the exchange rate and then you’ll feel really poor.

No matter where you go you’ll soon come across a peculiar sign. This one was on a train in Poland. It was meant to convey, ‘Do not throw rubbish out the window’. Or so it seemed.

6. Be careful with airport ATMs

Shop around for currency conversion and don’t use the first ATM you find. The machines conveniently located in airports usually charge high fees or commissions.

Transport

7. Get to the airport early

It’s easy to think that because you’ve been to a few airports you’ve been to them all. Wrong. Until I experienced the security queue in Københavns Lufthavn (Copenhagen Airport, Denmark) I had this impression that most airports are efficient beasts. An hour and a half of waiting, very strict rules when it comes to liquids, and the way one shuffles through the scanner, and being almost the last one to board my flight had me reconsider this.

Do your research and don’t take things for granted – just because Coolangatta is easy peasy doesn’t mean Charles de Gaulle will be.

8. Hire a bike

We found the best way to get around Paris, Berlin, Copenhagen and Warsaw was by bike. The bicycle infrastructure in each of these cities varied a lot but one thing was for sure, cycling is part of life and is a quick and fun way of exploring. Our favourite hiring scheme was ‘Vélib’ in Paris. You pay a small fee to access the system (1,70€ at the time of writing) and can use a bike for 30 minutes for free.

The trick is to ride for half hour or less and return the bike to one of the plentiful stands, have a look around, grab another bike, and enjoy another half hour for free. Merci, Paris.

We hired bikes in Paris, Berlin, Copenhagen, and Warsaw. The Vélib’ system in Paris was without a doubt the most comprehensive and value-for-money.

9. Use public transport

Most European cities have robust networks of public transport. Intercity and intercountry high-speed trains, underground metro rail, light-rail, buses – I was quite taken by Düsseldorf, Germany. For a city smaller than Adelaide it had trams galore, an underground rail system and linked neatly with the rest of Europe with high-speed rail.

The best bit was that public transport across Europe is relatively cheap and will take you where you want to go.

10. Low-cost airlines are often very basic (and crafty)

Like with airports, not all low-cost airlines are the same. You think Jetstar is basic? Try flying some of the European low-cost carriers. I didn’t read an email from one unnamed carrier as carefully as I should have and got stung 419 złoty ($140 AUD) at the gate to check in!

Yep, some will make you check in online (no less than 2 hours before departure) and print your own boarding pass.

Safety

11. Be vigilant of swindlers and street sellers

I’ll admit it, I found it quite entertaining watching tourist after tourist get duped by three cup shuffle in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. But those guys before kept winning? Isn’t it uncanny they look like brothers? Have your wits about you, don’t sign things or buy things from people in odd places and don’t ride with strangers.

Isn’t this what travel is all about? Experiencing things you could never imagine or see at home?

12. Use your hotel safe

To avoid huge transaction fees it is a good idea to withdraw more cash, less often. Keep it in your hotel safe, if they have one, to keep it well – safe. Likewise cameras, watches, and other valuables. As a further precaution, I read it somewhere recently, ‘If it would ruin your afternoon if it were stolen, don’t take it with you.’

General

13. Do a free walking tour

Many cities run free walking tours. The best we found was by the Free Walking Tour Foundation in Kraków. You can join when you want, leave when you want, and leave a tip if you want. A guided tour of a city or particular attraction will always give you a better understanding of it. And when it’s free, what have you got to lose?

14. When in doubt, ask

After getting lost many handfuls of occasions, especially in the straße of Berlin, we soon realised it was better to ask for help than think of yourself as a master of navigation. Everyone we asked for directions or recommendations was only too happy to assist.

Either in our limited grasp of the local language or in English, everywhere we travelled, including Poland, most people we met spoke good English.

Accommodation

15. Check if your hotel has air conditioning

Many European and British hotels don’t. We learned this the hard way, suffering through many nights where the inside temperature didn’t dip below 30! Modern accommodation usually had effective systems.

Food

16. Carry a refillable bottle

Tap water in most European cities is perfectly safe to drink. Interestingly, and as much as this is the case, you’ll be hard-pressed to be served it in Polish cities. Hotel rooms usually boast free bottles of water and at restaurants, when asked, they’ll bring you bottled still or sparkling for a fee – though, in złoty, the cost is negligible. When out for the day, fill up your own water bottle.

17. Eat local, drink local

Whatever you do, do not pass up the opportunity to try local food and drinks. We had the best bangers and mash with flat beer in London, beautiful bistro meals with carafes of red wine in the laneways of Paris, schnitzels as big as your head, served traditionally with a lemon wedge rather than lashings of sauce, in Dusseldorf and beautiful little pillow-like pierogi and half-litre glasses of Polish beer in the milk bars of Kraków.

I think you learn a lot about a place by sampling their food, wine, and beer. So, ignore those pizza and burger joints and immerse yourself.

When in Paris, sip black coffee and eat a plain croissant for breakfast. Seriously, the perfect start to the day.

18. Be careful when catching a cab, especially in Poland

No dig at Poland, it was a lovely country to visit. But be careful when catching a cab as the drivers are notorious for ripping people off. Rather than hailing a cab on the street or out the front of the airport, book ahead. That way you can agree on a fee beforehand.

If you do hail a taxi, ask the driver how much the fare will be before accepting it. Some hotels will allow you to book with them and their preferred taxi company at a fixed rate, especially if you’re travelling to common places like the airport.

19. Pack a small set of scales

Being slugged excess baggage is the worst. Weigh your bags beforehand to see if you meet your allowance. That way you can redistribute the weight, remove items, or book more weight online for a cheaper fee.
