Practice sketches of Orm and Dr. Shin. I have a bit of a soft-spot for disgraced scientists who go down the wrong path in pursuit of their passion but when it comes down to it will do the right thing in the end. It’s a surprisingly common trope and I’m a sucker for it every time.

I always wondered if someone is trapped in a morph, why not use the blue box on them again? I always thought it would be so ironic if after all this do I stay as a bird or a boy stuff with Tobias that only to realize they could do this at the end of things and it was never suggested because it’s maybe just not attempted or something.

My guess is that the andalites have tried it at some point and Ax knows it won't work. Because — even though Tobias himself is ambivalent on the subject — Rachel and Jake are both DETERMINED to de-nothlit him no matter what. So between the Berensons' desperation to Fix The Thing and Ax's closeness with Tobias, I can't imagine that no one ever brought up the idea of trying to use the blue box on Tobias a second time. My guess would therefore be that it's widely known there is no cure for nothlitization, with or without the box.

Ax mentions early on in #8 that he's "afraid Tobias will ask" about how to get un-trapped, because he knows there's "no way to fix" a nothlit, but that Tobias hasn't asked him at any point in their first several weeks as roommates. So that suggests to me both that Ax knows there's no cure, blue box or no blue box, and that Tobias is happy enough as a bird not to bring it up.

I love how whenever ax is scared for the others he only ever calls for Jake and Tobias like brothers got priorities and honestly I respect that

kind of enamored with the animorphs background detail that rachel is in charge of tobias and ax's closet. she's canonically either just purchasing shit for ax without his input (has his size memorized?) and bringing it to the scoop for him or dragging him shopping and trying to keep him away from the food court for long enough to try on outfits. and the little nineties magazine cover model outfits she puts him in, which are apparently dork-preppy enough that they make marco want to shove his head in the toilet, certainly do not cater to any of ax's actual tastes. do you suppose rachel ax and tobias all went to the mall together and tobias coerced him with promises of cinnamon rolls to try on 4 different stupid pink polos so rachel could decide on her favorite. cool shorm bonding experience (tobias tying a pair of shoes onto ax's feet at his girlfriend's behest while ax politely inquires for the seventh time in a row when they will be obtaining cinnamon buns)

How differently do you think Tobias would act in the later books if the events of #33 had never happened? a few of the others mention that tobias seems different after his torture and it's definitely clear that it impacted him more than he can acknowledge, but I'm curious as to your take on how much it changed his behavior

It's honestly hard to say, if only because so many of the books #34 - #52 are ghost-written and therefore suffer from inconsistencies in places. For me the biggest moment of "whoa, something changed" is the opening of #41 where Jake notes that Tobias just takes off after the battle is over, and that a few months ago it would've been unlike him not to check on Rachel or Ax.

For me, that helps to explain Tobias’s relative lack of engagement with Rachel in #42 and #48. Even though she narrates both books, they're more focused on her relationships with Cassie and Marco and Jake, while Tobias is kind of just there. #48 especially barely mentions him, which is a glaring contrast to all the other books (#22, #7, etc) where Rachel puts him as the most important person in her life. It could be that he has trouble connecting with the others, and isn't able to maintain that relationship as well as he'd like.

The other place where Tobias’s lack of reaction has always stood out to me is #40. Ax says people who choose to be nothlits are "cowards", Cassie hastens to add that she doesn't think Gafinilan would do such a thing, and Tobias is just... there. He doesn't say anything in response. Same goes for the scene where Ax and Jake and Gafinilan talk about stigma against people who can't morph. My cynical Doylist suspicion is that the ghost writers forgot about him, but the Watsonian explanation could be that he's really checked out as a result of being traumatized and doesn't have the spoons to engage.

So: to circle back, I think Tobias would probably be more tuned in to his relationships with his girlfriend and his shorm, and better able to support them, if he hadn't experienced #33.
