Silica Sand Market Challenges
The Cost of Silica Sand, as Well as Investments and Transportation, are Limiting Market DevelopmentSand and gravel prices have risen significantly over the last decade, from about $7 per metric ton in 2007 to $9 in 2018. Specialty sands command even higher prices: frac sand, which is used in hydraulic fracking to extract oil, cost about $26 per ton in 2018, but has risen to over $70 per ton during times of scarcity. Spending money on oil is challenging. Sand is heavy, and because of its value, transporting and processing it is expensive and difficult. Traders are unable to buy or sell futures contracts tied to coal, just as they are unable to buy or sell futures contracts tied to other items such as soybeans or gasoline. As a result, shareholders interested in increasing their sand exposure should look for investments in sand-related businesses. However, government regulations on the use of silica, fluctuations in raw material supply, and product cost instability are expected to limit demand growth in the coming years. Illegal sand mining and the production of sand-free construction goods can also stymie global market growth.

"GOLDEN CRACKS; KINTSUGI" by BASTIAN S.S.
Tumblr media
"It cracked. Her perfect facade was no longer perfect. Her breath was dry, it cut deep. There was no air in her lungs but dust, silica dust."
Havana was the picture of perfection, or so it seemed. With flawless features and an unyielding determination to excel, she was the envy of every girl in town. But behind closed doors, a sinister transformation was underway. As Havana's obsession with perfection intensified, so did the eerie changes to her body. It started with subtle alterations—a porcelain sheen to her skin, an unnatural stillness to her movements, and as the days turned to weeks and the weeks to months, her descent into darkness became undeniable.
Instead of recoiling from the transformation, Havana embraced it. She reveled in the porcelain perfection of her new form, unaware of the horrors lurking beneath the surface. But as her body continued to morph into that of a living doll, she soon realized the price of her vanity. Havana's humanity slipped away, replaced by something cold and unfeeling. And when her very breath turned to porcelain, she knew that her time was running out.
In "Golden Cracks; Kintsugi" Bastian S.S.'s 8th published book, where the line between beauty and horror blurs, and Havana Rose's transformation becomes a cautionary tale of the dangers of perfection. Will she succumb to the darkness consuming her, or will she find a way to break free from the porcelain prison closing in around her?

I studied glass blowing in university. Silicosis was mentioned often, but it appears we never had a cohesive lecture about it. It's not in my notes or the various other resources I've been made aware of.
From memory:
We use cutlet in the furnaces because the alternative comes with a much greater silicosis risk when handling.
We use an N-95 in all plaster mold making endeavors but especially plaster-silica molds and especially when de-molding as the silica would have spent prolong periods of time at 1000 degrees F.
N-95 for cleaning the kilns and kiln furniture.
The cold shop was cleaned wet, and I've been chatting with a Facebook group about cleaning a personal studio. Personal studios see much less use than a university shop. Everyone cleans it dry with an N-95.
(I liked the idea of using a roomba as you can run the vacuum without being present.)
Grinding ('cutting' or 'drilling') glass requires water, although that's actually not just because of silicosis, it just doesn't work to do it dry.
N-95 for powdered frit, except when using the ventilation box. And use the ventilation box properly.
I'm realizing there's a studio some what near me I can call and ask what their cleaning regimen is.
Was interesting to see something I was somewhat familiar with appear on tumblr in a different context from the one I'm used to.
Also, the counter top silicosis is really fucked :(
that is SO INTERESTING. thank you! pleased to share this with whoever else may land upon the post.
I feel relieved to know that the norm seems to take safety into account with regards to silica particulate, which I could see seeming like less of a big deal than the high temperatures and such. very good to hear.
the countertops situation seems especially insidious to me because they are marketed as a totally normal product. people getting them installed are choosing based on aesthetics, cleanability, price, etc, and not receiving information about the human health impacts unless they go seeking out that information proactively. and why would you?? it is sold like a perfectly normal household product, like carpet or tile. except previously healthy 25-year-olds aren't dropping dead from installing tile. I really don't know what would work short of a ban like Australia's, I hope California gets some legislation through. thanks friend.

Fumed Silica Prices, Price, Trend, Supply & Demand and Forecast | ChemAnalyst
Tumblr media
Fumed Silica Prices, a versatile material known for its wide-ranging applications across various industries, has been witnessing fluctuations in prices, largely influenced by market demand, supply dynamics, and raw material costs. As an integral component in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, paints and coatings, adhesives, and electronics, fumed silica plays a critical role in enhancing product performance and functionality. However, understanding the intricate factors affecting its pricing is essential for businesses to navigate effectively within this market landscape.
In recent years, the global demand for fumed silica has been on the rise, driven by the expanding construction industry, burgeoning automotive sector, and increasing adoption of silicone-based products. This heightened demand has placed upward pressure on prices, with manufacturers striving to meet the escalating needs of various end-user industries. Moreover, the emergence of advanced applications in areas like renewable energy and healthcare has further propelled the demand for fumed silica, amplifying its market value.
Another significant factor influencing fumed silica prices is the volatility in raw material costs, particularly silicon tetrachloride and silica sand, which are primary sources for fumed silica production. Fluctuations in the prices of these raw materials, often influenced by factors such as global economic conditions, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical tensions, directly impact the overall production costs of fumed silica. Consequently, manufacturers may adjust their pricing strategies to offset these cost fluctuations, thereby impacting the final market prices of fumed silica products.

Furthermore, the competitive landscape within the fumed silica market also contributes to price dynamics. With several key players operating in the industry, including Evonik Industries AG, Cabot Corporation, and Wacker Chemie AG, among others, market dynamics such as supply-demand balance, technological advancements, and strategic alliances significantly influence pricing strategies. Intense competition among manufacturers may lead to price wars or aggressive pricing tactics to gain market share, ultimately affecting the overall pricing trends within the fumed silica market.
Additionally, regulatory factors and environmental considerations play a crucial role in shaping fumed silica prices. Stringent regulations pertaining to environmental protection, safety standards, and product quality impose compliance costs on manufacturers, which may be reflected in the pricing of fumed silica products. Moreover, evolving sustainability initiatives and the growing preference for eco-friendly alternatives drive innovation within the industry, influencing production processes and, consequently, pricing strategies.
Moreover, regional dynamics also contribute to the variability in fumed silica prices. Different regions exhibit distinct demand-supply dynamics, regulatory frameworks, and economic conditions, which influence pricing variations across markets. For instance, regions with robust industrial infrastructure and high manufacturing activity may experience higher demand for fumed silica, thereby impacting prices differently compared to regions with slower economic growth or stringent regulatory environments.
In conclusion, the pricing of fumed silica is subject to a myriad of factors, including market demand, raw material costs, competitive dynamics, regulatory considerations, and regional variations. As businesses navigate this complex landscape, understanding these factors and their interplay is crucial for making informed decisions regarding procurement, pricing strategies, and market positioning. Moreover, leveraging market intelligence, strategic partnerships, and innovation can help stakeholders mitigate risks and capitalize on opportunities within the dynamic fumed silica market, ensuring sustainable growth and competitiveness in the long run.

Let’s do the character design description again :) how about.. Vio?
[Okay...*cracks knuckles for no reason* Let's do this!]
Vio: Body type is lanky, sort of lanky, light grey skin with a faded green snake tattoo that wraps up one arm around his torso/abdomen and then coils down the other arm (the head starts on his right arm, mouth open in an angry hiss). This cocky fucker is always chill and relaxed in his pose with a smirk on his face, his canines protrude out to look like fangs. His eyes are heavily bagged like he's not slept in days, the silica is yellow and his pupils are slits like a snake. His left eyebrow has a bar stud pricing and his long forked tongue is also pierced with two balls going down the middle. Has long scruffy black hair, ties it back in a low ponytail at the back of his neck that ends at his mid-back, the fronts long to frame his face half covers his right eye, the hair around his face is dyed green. His hands look like claws and he only has four fingers (a thumb and three digits). Clothing consists of a green shirt loaded with holes and ripped up, one large hole exposes his right nipple, two strips of black tape make an X across his chest (his tattoo is exposed on his midriff and neckline). Black fingerless gloves, spiked wrist bands (left is thick with 3 rows of spikes, right is thin with 1 or 2 rows), and spiked collar. Dark grey baggy punk pants with rips in the legs that are held by, you guessed it, a black spiked belt with a silver buckle. Sometimes wears a leather spiked biker jacket, sometimes it's a torn-up sleeveless black vest, and sometimes it's a combo of the two.
