Pentagon confirms start of serial production of the B-21 Raider stealth bomber
The U.S. Air Force recently confirmed that the secret plane continued flight tests at Edwards Air Base.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 01/22/2024 - 21:59in Military
After the first flight of the newest stealth bomber of the U.S. Air Force, the Pentagon formally approved the B-21 Raider program to start production, the main Pentagon acquisition officer confirmed today.
"The production of the B-21 'Raider' stealth bomber is advancing. Last fall, based on the results of the ground and flight tests and the team's mature plans for manufacturing, I gave the green light to start producing B-21 at a low rate," the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition and Support, William LaPlante said in a statement.
"One of the main attributes of this program has been the conception for production from the beginning - and in scale - to provide a credible impediment to opponents. If you don't produce and put in the field for fighters on a large scale, the capacity doesn't really matter," he added.
Tumblr media
First flight of the B-21 Raider.
More details about the value of the contract signature and the delivery dates were not disclosed. The news of the beginning of the bomber's production was first reported by Bloomberg.
Tumblr media
Set to replace the B-2 Spirit and the B-1 Lancer, the nuclear-capable Raider is designed for long-range missions with stealth resources that can help you escape enemy air defenses. The U.S. Air Force initially plans to buy at least 100 bombers and put them into service in the mid-2020s.
Tumblr media
The Pentagon linked the concession of the program's initial low-rate production contract to the aircraft's first flight, which took place in November and was followed by at least one other test flight at Edwards Air Base. However, the executives of the aircraft manufacturer, Northrop Grumman, have long warned that the first batches of production may not be profitable for the company due to inflationary impacts.
The defense contractor is expected to disclose its year-end profits for 2023 on January 25, where investors will probably also be aware of updates on the LGM-35A Sentinel ICBM, the company's other nuclear modernization program that authorities released last week that suffered a "critical cost violation".

WEEK 12 - ART ECOSYSTEMS
Art ecosystems provides a foundation and sustains economies. Design ecologies are an interaction, it forms inter-relationships in a network.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I want to connect with the Image and Art Direction stream. I find photography to be such a beautiful form of art. The depth of a photograph is able to convey a story and impact our emotions. Art Direction involves the harmonious fusion of various artistic elements to create a coherent and visually appealing composition.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the projects that caught my attention is called "Liquid Traces". It has inspired me because of its intricate and detailed photography and crafting a story behind images and layout them into a book.
The external entities I am interested in are photographers and art designers. I love Ania et Lucie's minimalistic, yet luxurious with moody lighting and avant garde overtures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Design Communication has enabled people to effectively convey complex themes and powerful messages. By using the right mediums, we as designers will in turn amplify the impact of communication. It drives societal changes and emerges as a catalyst for social movements.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Paper has become a niche due to the rise of digitalization. However, I hope to make an impact to the community that still provides paper needs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Print is still considered to be one of the most alluring forms of art. It engages more of the reader's emotions and it's interesting how different forms of paper each holds their own personalities.
For "Liquid Traces" the simple, monochromatic photographs evoked a sense of nostalgia and yearning. The clean design and thick matte paper were a good medium to express these photographs.

Nothing could make it more official that Kate won’t be attending Earthshot Week in Singapore this November than Kate wearing a Singaporean designer -
Yep, I thought she'd wear Alexander McQueen so when she wore a dress by a designer she hasn't worn before who's originally from Singapore, for me it was her saying "sorry I won't be able to visit in November".
Earthshot 2023 would be the obvious time and place to wear an outfit by a Singaporean designer, so why wear one months before?
Because she isn't going to Singapore in November and she knows this in June. She's joined William for the last two Earthshot awards so it's very doubtful she's have something in her diary that would cause a scheduling conflict.
What could Catherine have knowledge of in June that she knows would mean she can't travel to Singapore in November?
Tumblr media
It makes no sense to wear a non-British designer who does not design for a British fashion house on a day of importance to the UK and the UK military.
Kate doesn't do coming attractions with her wardrobe four to five months ahead of making appearances in other countries. She's never done that on a regular basis, and she wasn't doing that this weekend.

Week 5: Artistic Traditions & Lineages
I discovered that paintings serve as a visual insight into Singapore’s history, and all artists follow a style from a renowned artist as reference, making no art original.
Tumblr media
While going through the Singapore Graphic Archives website, the image above caught my attention. As a designer, I like how the use of Adobe Illustrator and Indesign help to create the medium of this poster, which is commercial art. This form of medium is used by Camera Club of the Philippines.
In this poster, repetition, rhythm, and positive-negative space is used to create the Bonsai trees with bombs. Produced in the early 2000s, the creator’s intent is to convey the protest against the American invasion of Iraq in 2003. This advertisement helps to spread awareness of the war, especially if the war is happening in their home country. I appreciate GraphicTaskForce’s efforts in promoting public awareness to garner public support and boost morale.
If I had more time, one thing I would do differently is research further for sources with ample information of its content. This can make my writing more valid with supported evidence of the history. Moreover, I would want to write more about the colour in this poster. For example, the use of 2 colours make the overall visual modern and minimalistic.
In my opinion, knowing artistic traditions helps to create new ideas. Having the knowledge of Singapore’s history serves as an inspiration for the concept of future projects.

Handling the Heat Part 2: How Masterplanners are Designing for a Hotter Climate
In "Handling the Heat Part 2: How Masterplanners are Designing for a Hotter Climate," published on September 8, 2023, by Anna Highfield, the article delves into the strategies employed by masterplanners to combat the increasing challenges posed by overheating in urban areas, particularly in the UK.
Summary: The article discusses how architects and masterplanners are adapting their designs to address the growing problem of overheating in the UK due to climate change. It emphasizes the importance of masterplanning at a city-wide scale to create sustainable, cooler environments.
Data-Driven Approaches: Ed Baker, a masterplanner from Broadway Malyan, highlights the need for robust data modeling to mitigate extreme temperatures. Singapore's "digital twin" model serves as a valuable example for analyzing urban risks and optimizing infrastructure.
Urban Greening: Urban greening and planned shading are considered effective strategies for cooling cities. Adding vegetation can increase evaporation, reducing temperatures by up to 4.43°C. Examples include Stockholm's "smart streets" and projects in Leeds, Barking, and Croydon that prioritize green spaces and pedestrian-friendly designs.
Cool Roofs: Arup's proposal for "cool" roofs, painted with reflective white paint or fitted with solar panels, is suggested for high-risk areas in London to reduce heat absorption. Green roofs with deep soil, while challenging for retrofits, offer significant cooling benefits by absorbing heat energy.
Architectural Solutions: Anthony Brower of Gensler suggests controlling building geometry, using "umbrella" buildings for shade, and reprogramming facades to reduce overheating risks.
International Examples: The article highlights international initiatives such as Brussels' focus on green streets and Sweden's heat maps, demonstrating how other countries are tackling urban heat islands.
Community Engagement: Brower emphasizes the importance of architects and masterplanners engaging with local communities and policymakers to influence planning codes and regulations as a means to address overheating issues.
The third part of the series will explore UK building regulations and planning codes related to overheating and potential adaptations.

Daniel Ricciardo insists Lando Norris is NOT receiving preferential treatment from McLaren
Daniel Ricciardo insists Lando Norris is NOT receiving preferential treatment after McLaren gave the young gun the upper hand ahead of Singapore GP Lando Norris has received an upgrade package for the Singapore Grand Prix Daniel Ricciardo will have until next week's Japanese GP for the upgrade But the eight-time GP winner insisted McLaren aren't favouring Norris over him Aussie will leave McLaren at the end of the season, a year earlier than planned  Ricciardo will be replaced by fellow Australian Oscar Piastri next year   By Dan Cancian For Daily Mail Australia Published: 11:13 EDT, 30 September 2022 | Updated: 11:13 EDT, 30 September 2022 Daniel Ricciardo has dismissed claims McLaren are affording Lando Norris preferential treatment, despite missing out on the latest engine upgrade. The Australian will leave the Woking-based team at the end of the season and McLaren appear to be already planning for life without him. While Norris has received an upgrade package for the Singapore Grand Prix this weekend, Ricciardo will have to wait until next week's Japanese GP to receive the same components. Daniel Ricciardo (left) has dismissed claims McLaren are giving his teammate Lando Norris preferential treatment The 33-year-old, however, sought to quash speculations McLaren were prioritising Norris over him and said the upgrades were designed with next season in mind.    'Obviously he [Norris] is here next year, I’m not,' he said.  'So for him to get another weekend to give the team feedback and obviously direction for next year, that’s ultimately the reason [for getting the upgrade]. And ahead of the Singapore GP, he conceded McLaren's decision to hand Norris the upgrade package this weekend had been taken with next season in mind,  'If there is maybe one part with a view to 2023, I’ll probably assume he gets it,' he continued. Ricciardo will be replaced at McLaren in 2023 by fellow Aussie Oscar Piastri (above)  'But I think this weekend is probably the only one where there’ll be that difference.' Week 4&5 How to analyze a Work of Design & Field trip to museum
Week 4 was insightful for me as we all got to share our thoughts and learn the how to analyze the design of an object we see around us. Starting out by asking what function does the object serve. Each item and object has its own purpose. From there we asked ourselves, how the design is able to serve the purpose of the object. Design includes textures, pattern, color and material used. Questioning whether the elements used has a specific motif and is able to serve the function of the object. Additionally, these elements used in the design end up holding a sentimental value behind it. For instance, a handkerchief could be of a high value object and could have belong to a valuable person personal to us. Its checkered/square patterns and dull color(indicating it is used) causes one to reminisce the past. In class activity, we discussed and analyze the significance of an objects design, medium, color and purpose. It was fun as we get to share our thoughts and what we feel the purpose of the shared objects was. There wasn't really any right or wrong answers as we all had our own opinions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Week 5 visit to the museum, I had a really enriching time as there were many exhibits depicting/portraying local life from the past to the present as well as a little bit into the future. There were a few art displays that I found interesting that I managed to depict. I also noticed how common paper was used as a medium too. Here are some art works on display in the National Museum Singapore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Personally, I really love anything vintage/retro looking as I feel like it is underrated. I also love music as I dance in my free time to different music. To some retro/vintage style is complicated but for me I love how it looks because it gives me some type of vibe like a music festival. I love the fact that the style I like is versatile and can be used/articulate to combine the old and the new. To me the retro/vintage style looks modern yet it brings about the nostalgic feeling of the 90s culture. Hence, I really gravitate towards this artwork when I came across it.

Week 4&5 - How to analyze a Work of Design
There are a few components to consider when analysing a work of design. We have to consider the process and the purpose of the design, like what is the function and how it is being created. Besides that, we also need to take note of the medium or material that is being used and how it is being used, and what is the intention behind it. Furthermore, we have to look out for the type of elements used and what principles they follow to create their work. For week 4, the class brought three personal items to discuss its significance to us, the craftsmanship and the context of the item. After the activity, I discovered that everyone’s item has its own backstory and it is also interesting to hear how some of the items were created and their origin. Then, we categorised the items into four parts, personal significance, historical significance, materially pleasing and well crafted.
For week 5, we visited the National Museum to explore various antiques and design works. One of the works that caught my attention is the 1970s airline boarding pass at the Now Boarding exhibition. It shows how the old airline boarding pass looked back in the 1970s. Apparently, it is made of paper and you have to write down your flight number and seat number onto the boarding pass. As of today, airline boarding passes now come in both physical and digital form. It is easy to use and all flight information can be found upon scanning the barcode. Apart from its function, boarding passes now are made with thermal paper that is of better quality and material which is thicker and durable. There's also a difference in the design of the boarding pass between the 1970 and the modern. The old boarding pass has very minimal texts while the modern boarding pass has more texts and it is arranged orderly so that it is easier to read the information.

WEEK 4_ Analysis Design Framework
Tumblr media
The Analysis Design Framework, introduced during the WOII program week 2, emphasizes the importance of assessing aesthetics, functionality, usability, and overall efficacy in design as it is essential for designers to create impactful and successful designs that resonate with their audience and achieve desired outcomes (Kenton, 2023).
This lesson is further deepened through class activities, the items we brought to class were categorized into four groups based on the personal stories we shared about them: Historical Significance, Materially Pleasing, Well Crafted, and Personal Significance. For instance, my silver wallet, which I used daily, exemplifies these categories. It is crafted from high-quality leather, providing durability and a visually appealing accent to my casual attire. Despite the class placing it in the category of Personal Significance as it a necessary thing to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater House (1935) is a prime example of a design that integrates aesthetics and functionality, blending with its natural surroundings and water elements. The harmonious living space, from layout to materials, aims to enhance the occupant's experience of nature. (Fazzare, 2023)
Tumblr media
WEEK 5_ REFLECTION ON FIELD TRIP TO SINGAPORE NATIONAL MUSEUM
Tumblr media
On the fifth week, we visited the Singapore National Museum on a field trip, which was also a chance for us to learn more about the previous week's lesson by encountering a diverse range of remarkable exhibits and activities. However, there was a particular instance where I felt inclined to make a significant expenditure: the history of travel guide design and its impact.
During our visit to the Singapore National Museum, I delved into the evolution of tourist guidebook design, showcasing the principles of the Analysis Design Framework. From traditional print to digital formats, the exhibit illustrated how design elements such as aesthetics, functionality, and usability have evolved to enhance travelers' experiences. This exploration underscored the significance of thoughtful design in creating effective and impactful tourist guidebooks, enriching travelers' journeys. (Early Tourist Guidebooks to Singapore: The Handbook to Singapore (1892), n.d.)
Tumblr media
In summation, these elements afford me the opportunity to view an artwork beyond its outward presentation, allowing for a deeper exploration of the meaning it imparts to viewers.

Week 4&5 - How to Analyze a Work of Design + Field Trip to National Museum of Singapore
During our class in week 4, we were asked to bring different objects to school and organize them into different categories such as materials, craftsmanship, and sentimental value. This activity allowed us to better understand what we learned during the lecture; the Design Analysis Framework. I found learning about design analysis framework to be intriguing, especially learning about processes, one of the five components of the framework.
Usually when looking at designs, I would rarely think about how and why it is processed this way, I mostly focus only on the material and the meaning behind it. Thinking more about the process would help me get into the designers' minds and understand their designs better. This reminded me of the importance of CPJ, why Lasalle encourages us to record down all our processes so they can better understand our designs and reasons for decisions made in our designs.
It was helpful to learn about this framework as well, so now I know where to start when analyzing designs.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
We were able to put what we learned to use in the following week at the National Museum of Singapore. One of the exhibitions that caught my attention was the recycling exhibition, ‘Re-’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The exhibition was made with the purpose of provoking and educating visitors about plastic because rather than ignoring the fact that plastic is a problem, we should learn about what we can do to help. This exhibition has lots of bright colors, which was what first caught my eye. This led me to think about the process of creating this exhibition. I realized other than the designers using bright colors to catch attention, they also decided to use familiar everyday household items to represent the plastics, making the exhibition relatable to visitors. There were also some missing objects in this exhibition that you have to find in other exhibitions, which made the exhibition more engaging for visitors and encouraged them to take a look at other exhibitions too.

Week 4 & 5 - How to analyse a work of design
In this lesson, we learnt how to properly analyse a work of design. We learnt that there are five major components that assists us in expressing our thoughts on designed objects. It consists of Processes & Purpose, Subject Matter & Meanings, Choices & Uses of Mediums, Aspects of Forms and Contexts of Pieces.
Take for instance this watch.
Tumblr media
Processes & Purpose: to tell the time
Subject Matter & Meanings: watch
Choices & Uses of Mediums: stainless steel, brilliantly executed
Aspects of Forms: slightly on the bigger side of watches ( 48mm )
Contexts of Pieces: one of the first watches in my fathers collection
This is one my father`s watch. The purpose of the watch is to obviously tell the time. It is exquisitely crafted and it holds a lot of emotional value. It holds great value to my father as it is one of the first watches in his collection. I love the look, colour, weight and overall feel of the watch. It feels durable and looks that way too. I brought this watch during our class activity for the " well-crafted " prompt.
Tumblr media
The power of knowing how to analyse a work of design is extremely powerful. It helps me better understand the design choices made by well-known designers and illustrators. For my studio assignment, I really dove deep into understanding Phunk as a collective and analysed their work to find out what makes them unique. I researched all their works and understood their style and implemented them into my card design.
For week 5 we went on a field trip to the National Museum. We were tasked to document 10-15 images of art pieces that intrigued us. Using the knowledge of analysing from the previous week, we are then tasked to analyse said images.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The field trip really broadened my eyes as there could be so many designs and elements in our history that are yet to be discovered. Ancient techniques, albeit dated, are so beautiful and interesting in their own way. The amount of time, dedication and effort that they put in is truly marveling. It made me realise how lucky we are to live in a day and age in which we can access information so effortlessly. The tools and techniques we have now makes creating art so much easier and I am extremely grateful for that.

Week 4 + Week 5 Reflection
How to Analyze a Work of Design and Field Trip ( National Museum )
For week 4, we had to bring items which are interesting and made out of somethings. I bought a hairbrush which contains glitters inside and is made out of plastic, a pearl bracelet and a glass perfume bottle. We had to analyze how the items are made from, sizes different, history, and cultures. Before I understood this class's lesson, I always looked at and bought the items which are cute and pretty. I was barely aware of the item made from or the meaning behind that. I used to have a bunny doll when I was 5 years old. It was made from silk and silicon inside. It was used to be my best friend and I opened up to him whenever I was sad or happy. This is the history behind me and my doll. Now I realized that all the items have different meanings and different cultures.
For week 5, We had to go on a field trip to the Singapore National Museum. As an international student, when I saw the building of the museum, I was amazed and got interested immediately what other things are inside. There are a lot of fascinating things that captured my eyes, for example, how they maintained their ancient heritage. I really like the inside of the glass rotunda. I felt like I was in the jungle because of the raining sounds and the scent are very captivating. I am interested in the glasses and cups put in a circle way like a clock in now boarding experience. There was something similar to my country's culture which was the baskets and the mat which are made out of palm leaves. I was really surprised by seeing them. It was such a great field trip and I learned a lot of Singapore culture and the designs how the ancient designers created.

WEEK 9 - CULTURAL MATERIALISM
Today’s lecture is focused on Cultural Materialism. Cultural Materialists has three levels of social systems that constitute a universal pattern: Infrastructure, Structure and Superstructure. Infrastructure (Technological & Material Realities) is the base, it is how it interacts with the local environment. Structure is a society’s economic or social organization. Superstructure relates to ideology and symbolism.
They are all interconnected. For example, changes in Infrastructure results in changes in the structure and superstructure. Culture is learned, it is integrated, and is based on symbols.
Tumblr media
Since culture can be based on symbols, it can be seen as a gesture to signify something. For example, these emojis can represent New York as a whole. The apples symbolize "The Big Apple", another term well known to resemble New York.

Today's activity we were given 3 questions to answer. We had to choose 1 piece of infrastructure and discuss it. My teammates and I decided to choose the Vending Machine. We saw many technological advancements correlated to this. One of them which is an interface for the customers to select what they like or the "cashless" option.
The rise of mobile phones has affected society as a whole. For us designers, it can be seen as another source for "learning". For me personally, it has helped me to look for project inspirations or to take pictures for classes.
For the final question, I personally think that the world lacks digital privacy. Everyone is able to retrieve information about anyone they search up online, thus invading privacy. People also manage to publish private information online too which crosses boundaries.
