Another type of villain I love aside from cackling doofuses are villains with good publicity. It makes them much more threatening cos their seemingly perfect reputation (or even worse, their polite amiable attitude) creates more obstacles for the protagonists so they have to dig deeper into finding enough evidence to show the villain’s true colours.

My fave examples are Hugo Strange (Arkham City), Skye Larsen (Watchdogs Legion) and Simon Skinner (Hot Fuzz)

Sabine Brandt - yes. of course she can and she will, and to your face as well.

Dalton Wolfe - he can but thinks it’s too disrespectful so he doesn’t use it, maybe once a bluemoon he would, but apologizes instantly after it.

Bagley - oh yes he will, maybe as an insult too.

Richard Malik - he can, he wants to as well, but he won’t, for public image reasons. might do that behind your back tho.

Nigel Cass - he wouldn't, since he has a reputation to maintain after all but he would and will say it rather aggressively to your face in private if you pissed him off enough times (which probably won't be that hard)

Hamish Bolaji - the type of guy that would freak out if you say the word like he isn't one of them.

Kaitlin Lau - definetly an ally and she's too sweet to say it, also she would never call you something like that, ever.

Mary Kelley - no. does not know what it is, she does not care either.

Nowt - could and will, ironically or not entirely depends on her mood.

Skye Larsen - never in your life will you catch her say this and you can't even bait her to say it, also probably doesn't care if you are one or not, since you'd be end up being lobotomized if you ever meet her in person anyway.

Bradley Larsen - the one being called f*gg0t all the time. so yeah.

I was playing Watch Dogs: Legion for the fourth ok more like fourteenth time and I realised something interesting about the side/assisting NPCs and their respective villains...

Kaitlin Lau got to see Mary Kelley brought to justice (though maybe not in the way she originally intended). Nowt gets to be there at least digitally to see what happens to Skye Larsen. 

But Hamish Bolaji isn’t present at the defeat and death of Nigel Cass. I get there’s an argument that he’s under a bigger immediate threat than the other two, but given that he had such a personal history with his villain it feels like something is... missing? idk I just feel like if anyone deserved to have some final words with Cass it would be Hamish, who risked his life for who knows how long he was on the run for and likely felt guilty every day at the part he played in Albion’s rise to power. I think he deserved to pull the trigger a goodbye

never forget the time I spent half an hour or so rambling in front of Skye Larsen's suspended body because I can't decide whether she should live or die

[WARNING: SPOILER'S AHEAD! FINISH THE MAIN STORYLINE--INCLUDING NOWT'S SIDEQUESTS AND THE POST-GAME SIDEQUEST--THEN COME BACK.]

No but seriously. Her storyline fucked me up because..... God, man. Her mother died from an incurable motor neurone disease. Her brother's epilepsy left him wheelchair-bound and unable to speak. She herself was dying. It's no wonder she was so adamant in finishing Daybreak: she deeply resented the frailty of the human body. She didn't do this for shits and giggles; she did this because she didn't want other people to go through what she experienced. She did this because she didn't want to die. She did this because she was scared. Girl had issues!

On the other hand, the things she did was fucking despicable. Downright horrendous. Not only did she go against her mother's wishes, she deleted bits and pieces of her mind--while she was still (digitally) conscious, mind you--and turned her into her fucking in-house assistant AI. She begged Skye to stop because it was so fucking painful but she continued anyways. She took random people--some who had issues with her--and forced them into painful existences as various other AIs. Her actions cost real human lives and suffering, and that needs to be addressed.

I'd argue that straight up killing her is not the way to address that, because in my opinion her mind's not entirely there when she did all of this, but letting her go scot-free to continue Daybreak is definitively not it. I honestly kinda just wanna chuck her into therapy and prison.

you guys know I LOVE a list that's not interested in promoting brand new titles, but rather recommending books based on a very specific themes - the more specific, the better. in this case, the staff of the Feminist Press offer up some of their favorite books with twist endings and reveals that change EVERYTHING about the story.

anyway, for no particular reason, how do you feel about pirating articles from the NYT?

I hope it's good, because this SFF roundup by Amal El-Mohtar is too good not to share. I love the way she loves books, and the way she can highlight their shortcomings while still extolling their virtues. while I totally understand if anyone else isn't up for reading plague fiction yet (Station Eleven was... difficult), And Then I Woke Up has particularly nabbed my attention.

lastly, uh... don't worry about the "out this week" part of this article's title; that's not exactly accurate anymore. but those books are still out there and ripe for reading!

and this is a grab bag with a little something for anybody - trans memoir, high fantasy, romance, and even something creepy happening at a Welsh resort! you know, the only four genres.

SPOILERS, DEFINITELY! Watch Dogs Legion - -  “Into the Void” - - - I genuinely believe that this is the choice Wrench would make in that moment. His previous run-ins with Skye Larsen and Project Daybreak being one thing, sure it saved his friends life, but that was risky... ...as much as the idea of uploading ones mind to the cloud probably interests or amuses him, this is certainly not the way to go about it...it reminds me of the first words he utters when you meet him in Watch Dogs 2. “The needs of the many...” - A reference to our favorite Vulcan, but a motto that Wrench lives by...and one he upheld here. The many don’t need this, and thus...he put an end to it. This mission genuinely unsettled me...and I f*cking love that it did. This is what makes this game stand out among others.
