Missiles and Meal Service: The Hidden Toll of Flying in War-zones
Common occupational hazards in aviation; the not so new flight deck stressors would encompass turbulence, delayed pushbacks, and that one passanger having an issue with someone reclining their seat (this is so very common, believe me). Let’s not forget another one who thinks the seatbelt sign doesn’t apply to them while on active runway (because they are just itching for a snack they left inside their carry-on luggage in the overhead bin. Opens bin, then bag falls off on them and everyone around. SMH)
Back to business. Pilots and cabin crew flying over the Middle East lately, especially in and out of Qatar, well, there’s a new, less subtle source of anxiety: missile attacks. Who doesn’t know the news by now?
Yes, flying into Doha these days might involve dodging airspace closures, U.S. airbase targets, and the occasional Iranian and Israeli news. Glamorous, right?
Very.
While passengers worry about delayed in-flight meals and Wi-Fi speeds being too slow or disconnecting , the crew up front and in the aisles are dealing with something much much heavier: the psychological toll of flying through a region where geopolitics are very unpredictable, stormy, and always just over the horizon.
Tumblr media
What Happened in Qatar Exactly, you ask?
In resent years, we’ve witnessed sensitive airspaces and in response, airlines have shut down their airspaces. Flights being rerouted faster than a teenager dodging chores have become commonplace, and airline dispatchers around the world had one collective panic attack.
Now just imagine this. Inflight, flight crew are prepping beverage carts while air defence systems light up the radar. Boom-Chaka-Boom! Just another day in the skies.
Cabin Pressure: Flying with a Side of Adrenaline
Yes, crew (deck crew and cabin crew) are trained to handle demarcates, but war is not an average Emmergency! It’s one thing to worry about fuel efficiency. It’s another to fly over a region where missiles are a real-time hazard.
There is a huge difference between trusting an aircraft, the team, and trusting geopolitics.
Constant anticipatory anxiety.
Hypervigilance, even on layovers.
The unsettling knowledge that their aircraft might share airspace with defense drones, military jets, and… well, more missiles.
Hospitality Meets Hostility
Tumblr media
Cabin crew, as you know, are the face of calm, smile and all. Even so, smiling while you serve fish, beef and a gluten free meal on a flight skimming a conflict zone? That’s dark art right there.
Results:
Crew becoming emotionally disconnected from their jobs.
Guilt when evacuating people while others are left behind. 2020 clears throat!
Luxury inflight service inside a pressure cooker floating mid air at 40,000 feet while those on ground are ducking. Definately dystopian!
More Fuel, More Detours, More Fatigue
Yep! Practical stress:
Flights being rerouted to avoid hot zones, adding hours to duty time.
Longer flight hours mean more fatigue, which affects both performance and emotional bandwidth.
There’s no glamour-AT ALL in a 15 hour turnaround because there is no clearance to land.
What Airlines Are Maybe doing
Critical Incident Stress Management teams.
Therapy appointments.
Pre and post dispatch briefings.
Even so, lots of crews feel out of the loop. Why you ask?Because, you get the news that you’re flying a risky zone when you’re already on it.
Hidden Costs: Forget Fuel and Insurance
Mental Health RiskWhat It Looks LikePTSD or traumaFlashbacks, fawning, sleep interruptions, avoidanceBurnoutEmotional numbness, lack of purposeAnxietyReccuring worry, overanalysing proceduresIsolationFeeling detached and lack of support on layovers or at home
These risks don’t show up on a flight log, but hey, they impact safety, morale, and retention. We talk about maintaining aircraft fatigue limits. What about crew fatigue limits?
Where Do We Go From Here?
Tumblr media
How about a Flight Plan for Mental Health in Conflict Zones:
Transparent Security Briefings.
Weight & balance before takeoff is paramount, so is mental health balance.
Flight Debriefs After High-Stress Flights.
Better Global Oversight, meaning ICAO, IATA and other relevant bodies must update protocols for mental wellness involving high-risk routes.
Bottom line, pilots and cabin crew are indeed professionals for they train, adapt, and make sure to get the job done. But, they are people too and not robots. People who fly into the world’s most dangerous zones with nothing more than a safety manual and nerves of steel.
We owe them patience, understanding, protection and genuine support as they navigate war zones with grit and grace.
Fly safe. Check on your crew friends, and just maybe skip the missile jokes during boarding.

Thanks for the suggestions! I think I'll take a fullsized King and Chain. I've always loved the idea of a Soulbond with a Chain!
*You step through the door of the Lamia Bittybones Adoption Center, full of strong resolve. Today you’re going to find two full-sized lamias to adopt, a King and a Chain. You’ve always wanted a SOULbond, and a King’s strong, protective nature appeals to you. You stop at the desk, and a very serious-looking Poff directs you to where the Kings hang out. A helpful Honey, a Pappy puppypapri, tells you that if the Chain for you is in the shop, he will find you.
*You thank each of the skelepuppers with headpats, then walk over to the King area. They Kings snap to attention the moment they see you and immediately begin flaring their hoods and dipping their heads to greet you. You’re a bit flustered by all of the attention, but the Kings strike heroic poses to distract you. One of the Kings is a bit closer than the others, and he has a mesmerized look on his face.
*The enamored King just can’t stop staring, and he almost tips over from one of his more daring poses. You haven’t even told him that you have two cuddly cats yet! He seems to like your short height. You’ve been staring at him just as much as he’s staring at you for the last several minutes, and a blush is beginning to creep up his face. His eyes are so hopeful that you know you’ll be adopting him.
Tumblr media
*As you head for the front desk to fill out the paperwork for the King, an arm slips out from behind a shelving unit, grabs you, twirls you, and dips you. Breathless you find yourself looking up at a full-sized Chain. You can feel your SOUL being drawn to him, and it’s a wonderful feeling! Your King appears and scowls at the Chain. The Chain steadies you back into an upright position and blows a raspberry at the King. He’s holding on of your hands, and he uses his other hand to point to the steady glow in his chest.
*The King takes your other hand, making sure the Chain knows that you chose him too. You give each lamia’s hand a squeeze, and they relax. You’ll be adopting them both. The tug of your SOUL is so strong with this particular Chain that he might’ve sneakily followed you home anyway if you’d left him behind. Instead, you ask the skelepuppers at the front desk for two sets of adoption papers.

On a very windy-day we decided to go to ‘Brielle’ a cosy village near Den Haag in the Netherlands. Our plan for today? Finding the right colors to make the Lily office chandelier shine bright like a diamond. (Whoop whoop!) :-)
A few months ago the very talented and oh so lovely people of the Lily shop & webshop in Mechelen came to us because they wanted to add some My ex boyfriend sparkle (Did I really just said that? :)) to their office space. They asked for some interior design help in 3 rooms. And we started working on their mayor office room. (’The photoshootroom’ & the ‘thisiswheretheladybossmagichappens-headoffice’ are in a state of ‘coming soon’...) We named the room ‘The family office’. They had different desks and asked for a solution to make the office look a little bit more professional, creative and aligned. We decided to design an XXL desk in polish pine. All the ‘regular’ employees have their steady place but interns and freelancers can co-work on the big table. (Pictures are coming soon/ I promise!) They didn’t want to throw away their desks (Ecological as they are!) so we designed a table that could be placed upon the ‘old’ desks. Besides this we decided to create a cork wall for some real-time Pinteresting-moadboards, a green plant-wall and a massive ‘playfull’ chandelier created with all these different Snowpuppe Moth, Moth Xl & Chestnut lights for right above their massive desk to create an impressive but still ‘light’ & welcoming feeling. Today we chose a variation of all the different colors & shapes (they have so many different shapes, sizes & colors available - C-C-C Crazyyy!) And since we were their we decided to use them in our permanent Myexboyfriendstore to. So expect some Snowpuppe magic in our new store! :)

via
via
via
via
via
via
via
via
via
via
via
via
via
via
via
via
 via
via
via
via
via
via
via

Some time ago I discovered the Instagram page of Mamoesjka_nl. A dutch girl with a passion for interior styling & decoration. I followed her Instagram profile and every day I discovered a new beautiful picture of her interior.  I decided to contact her and share her beautiful home on our blog.
When we do stylings or when we sell vintage pieces there are still a lot of people who ask us how they have to combine vintage pieces in their homes (without making it feel ‘old’) & a lot of people have questions when we talk about an ‘all white interior’ ‘wouldn’t it be to clean? Will it be ‘TO’ modern, or ‘maybe look like a hospital?’ Well for all you people who are doubting about these questions, look above. This beautiful home has a white base, but it’s still so playfull because of all the color accents.
The bench in the living room is bright pink so the entire room becomes playful & cosy because of this. The blue lighting above the table is (again) a design by Studio Snowpuppe (check our previous post = here). It’s made out of a strong paper so the light is very warm. The drawing above the bench is by a designer called Marta Abad Blay. The bench was made by the ‘Mamoesjka’s husband’. (Feeling a little bit jealous about her handy-man.) :)
In her entire home she uses a lot of ‘wallpaper’ strokes instead of covering entire walls. This gives the house a fresh look instead of an impression of ‘to much’. She combines vintage elements with new products like they are a match made in heaven.
I could really live here, don’t you? Thanks again to Ilona. -Yes that’s her real name- Fender, Bloom & Benjamin.
(And off course the husband for making the beautiful bench in the living room. I think we have a market for them, so if you ever want to sell them, give us a call ;))
