2. What inspires you - I’m going to answer this with a story. A few years ago, I had zero interest in making visual art. I hadn’t made anything since high school and I certainly didn’t see myself as a visual artist, but one day I did this exercise where you write a letter from your inner child to your current self. You use your non-dominant hand so as to more easily tap into your repressed feelings. The writing was an extremely cathartic experience, but what was more interesting was that immediately after I had finished the writing, I created a doodle with my left hand of this distressed robot character and colored it in (see first image). It was evident that that drawing was a reflection of my world at that current moment. I then had the revelation that I didn’t have to try to convey anything with my work, that anything I made would be a symbolic expression of my emotional landscape and would be good in and of itself because of this. So what inspires me really is this nonverbal process of excavating and releasing hidden emotions through art.

National Hoagie Day
Load up a soft or crispy bread roll with your favorite toppings, like meat, lettuce, tomato, and mustard, and dig in. Just don’t forget the napkins!
Everyone loves food! Which might help to explain why it’s possible to find so many different food-themed days to celebrate throughout the year for anyone who wants to. So it’s not much of a surprise that this very special sandwich would get its own day too!
Whether it is known as a hoagie, a sub, a wedge, a hero, Italian sandwich or a grinder, today is the perfect day to celebrate everything you love about this overstuffed, tasty and savory treat.
History of National Hoagie Day
The humble hoagie first appeared on the plates of Americans around or soon after 1953, when the sandwich was first made in the Philadelphia shipyards from WWI.
At the time, Italians working in the shipyards would make a sandwich by putting meats, cheese and lettuce in a soft baguette-shaped roll and bring it to work with them. The story goes that this easy-to-make but delicious creation would soon be labeled with the nickname of ‘the Hog Island’. Then, maybe because it doesn’t quite roll off the tongue easily, it would soon be shortened to “hoggie” and then eventually would become known affectionately as the ‘hoagie’.
There’s also a second theory of the hoagie’s birth, where the sandwich is said to have been created by street food vendors who were known as ‘hokey-pokey men’ in the early 20th century. Supposedly, these food sellers would slice a long loaf in half and stuff it with antipasto salad before selling it as a filling snack. And perhaps they were also dancing the “hokey-pokey” at the same time?!
Well-known in Philadelphia, the hoagie sandwich is so enjoyed in the city that, in 1992, the mayor Ed Rendell declared that the hoagie should be considered the official sandwich of the city.
National Hoagie Day Timeline
1762 Sandwiches are invented
The Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, asks for roast beef to be served between two slices of bread so he won’t have to get up from his work (or from gambling, depending on how the story goes).
1901 Submarine sandwich is invented
A small Italian grocer in New Jersey sells sandwiches on long bread that he will eventually name “submarine” sandwiches because of the shape.
1950s Hoagie sandwiches make their debut
In Philadelphia, after WWII, Italian immigrants who work on Hog Island bring long roll sandwiches with them. “Hog Island sandwiches” may have been shortened to “hoggies” and then to “hoagies”.
1955 Hoagies are listed on menus
With its growing popularity, restaurants in Philly begin to list hoagie sandwiches on their menus and it spread from there.
1992 Hoagie is made official in Philadelphia
Mayor Ed Rendell declares the Hoagie as the official sandwich of the city of Philadelphia.
How to Celebrate National Hoagie Day
Observing National Hoagie Day can be enjoyable for almost anyone when trying out some of these tips:
Enjoy a Hoagie at a Restaurant or Deli
Hoagies make the perfect lunch! In fact, that was their original purpose as they were used as an easily packable meal by the shipyard workers. So even if there’s not a lot of time for going all out in celebration, it’s easy to give a nod to National Hoagie Day by enjoying a grab-and-go sandwich lunch at a local deli.
Learn About Hoagies
Try out some of these fun facts to impress coworkers or friends for National Hoagie Day:
The perfect hoagie roll was invented when Bucelli’s Bakery joined forces with DePalma to create a delicious 8-inch long roll, which eventually became the standard for hoagies.
Americans eat more than 300 million sandwiches each year, many of which would classify as hoagies!
Premium hoagies can be made with upscale ingredients, such as imported Italian lunch meats, prosciutto, gourmet cheeses and more.
One of the biggest mysteries that seems to surround hoagies is the questions about what makes them different from other sandwiches like subs, heroes and grinders. But honestly, there isn’t much of a difference and they are basically the same sandwich just going by a different name.
Make a Homemade Hoagie Sandwich
It seems only right and good to celebrate hoagie day by fixing up a delightful and delicious homemade hoagie for yourself and those you love!
Start by slicing a soft or crispy long bread roll, throw in some favorite cold cut slices and don’t forget to add the cheese. For those who want to be fully authentic, don’t put mayo on there but, instead, stick with good quality olive oil and some Italian herbs. Finish off with some tomato and lettuce for a bit of extra crunch.
And for those who really want to get serious about National Hoagie Day, why not bake your own bread to craft your artisanal sandwich with? Fresh bread is certainly best.
Visit the Birthplace of Hoagies
Those who are super in love with hoagies might just find that National Hoagie Day is best spent in the city of Philadelphia, the place where hoagie sandwiches were first created. Some of the best and most famous Philly hoagie shops include:
Antonio’s Deli. Located in south Philly, Antonio’s serves its sandwiches on freshly baked bread from Sarcone’s, a fifth generation Italian bakery. They even serve a non-traditional vegetarian option.
Cosmi’s Deli. Operating since 1932, Cosmi’s offers more than a dozen different hoagie options on their menu, as well as cheesesteaks and roast pork sandwiches.
Liberty Kitchen PHL. With a small but delicious hoagie menu, Liberty in Fishtown offers sandwiches with hand-stretched Caputo mozzarella and other sought after gourmet ingredients.
Datillo’s Delicatessen. For more than 40 years this deli has been offering up tasty hoagies, including their house specialty that includes hot capicola, pepperoni, salami, provolone cheese, artichoke hearts and homemade roasted red peppers.
Share National Hoagie Day
Don’t keep the joy of the hoagie all to yourself. Snap a pic and share that tasty creation on social media, so other observers can join in on the fun. And perhaps it might be fun to invite some friends over for a hoagie making party. Or create a hoagie sandwich making line in the breakroom at work.
Simply line up the ingredients, including artisan bread rolls, gourmet cheese options, lunch meats and veggies, and let people pile them on as high as they like. Add some condiments such as mayo, herbs and spices, or olive oil and everyone can enjoy what they love!
Have a great hoagie day!

The people must know: What are your favorite sandwiches???
Ah, sandwiches. What a magical food.
Since you graced us all with a whole dissertation I feel like I owe you the same level of detail, let’s see what we can do here.
While I am not actually vegetarian, I LOVE a veggie sandwich. One of my all time favorites to make at home is seeded rye with hummus on one side and homemade herby cream cheese on the other [usually parsley, green onion, mint, dill, and fresh garlic. Also sometimes this is chèvre instead of cream cheese]. Between the bread we have sliced cucumbers [seasoned with salt, pepper, and lemon juice], big slices of tomato, and arugula [sprouts if I can get my hands on them]. This whole ordeal is fabulous with turkey or bacon if you want more protein, I’ve also done smashed chickpeas in place of the hummus for a heartier option.
Another veggie sandwich I love is from a local bakery and if I knew exactly how they made it I would tell you, but it’s fresh crusty sourdough liberally coated in amazing olive oil, with this incredible carrot purée, thinly sliced fennel, Calabrian chilis, and arugula. So fucking good.
Okay, let’s talk about something less “healthy”
If you’ve ever been to Buffalo, New York [Go Bills] there are TWO sandwiches that I think about all the time.
The first is pretty ubiquitous through western New York: Beef on Weck. This is roast beef, dipped in hot jus, and piled on a kimmelweck roll [basically a Kaiser roll with crunchy sea salt and caraway seeds]. That’s it. Personally, I like to add an almost unadvisable amount of horseradish, but that’s it. It’s perfect.
The second is a true drunken indulgence. The Stinger Hoagie from Jim’s Steakout. If you are unfamiliar with Jim’s, most locations are open until 5am [bars in Buffalo close at 4am. A real drinking town] and the employees can often be seen wearing shirts that say “I see drunk people.” The Stinger Hoagie is their beautiful monster. Cheesesteak meets chicken finger sub. Shaved steak, chicken fingers, fried onions, melted American cheese, lettuce, tomato, Frank’s Red Hot, and Jim’s special sauce. [I am fucking drooling right now, I haven’t had one of these since I was in my twenties.]
When it comes to deli meat, I tend to lean toward turkey, but I want some really soft seeded multigrain bread with crispy Romain and good tomatoes. Thick slices of sharp sharp cheddar, mayonnaise, and Nance’s Sharp and Creamy mustard. I might toss in some cucumber or parsley, maybe apples and bacon if I’m feeling extra, but the specific mustard is very important.
[this isn’t really a sandwich but I’ll often take a big rib of Romaine lettuce and make a little deli boat with turkey, cheese, and Mayo. I’m sure I can blame that on high school, my mother, and all the lovely disordered eating habits I developed as a teen]
Grilled cheese… I’m sort of all over the place with grilled cheese, always experimenting, but for me, the most important thing is using GRATED CHEESE [and to be clear, I mean block cheese that you grate at home, not the pre-grated stuff in the bag, please, this is important, that shit doesn’t melt right] I want the cheese pouring over the sides of the bread, hitting the pan, oozing and bubbling until it’s gold and crispy and perfect.
I’ll give you one fancy grilled cheese: deviled egg grilled cheese. Two hard boiled eggs, whites sliced thin, yolks mixed with mayo, mustard, pepper, paprika, dill. Into the pan goes bread, cheese mixture [gruyere and cheddar, shredded and mixed with a little Mayo and mustard], yolk mixture, sliced whites, more cheese mixture, bread. Done.
This is getting out of control and I haven’t talked about chopped italian sandwiches, or banh mi, or my mom’s famous roast beef and mock Boursin sandwiches, or my obsession with Calabrian chilis [oh! Add those to the mayo on a turkey sandwich], or the time I put an entire meatloaf on an entire loaf of bread and called it a sandwich.
I haven’t even TOUCHED on breakfast sandwiches but if I get into that we’ll be here forever.
So, for now, I’ll cap it there, but there’s plenty of room for a sequel.
Hope that answers your question!

These Slow Cooker French Dip Sandwiches are melt-in-your-mouth tender and packed with flavor. Slow cooking the beef with aromatic herbs and sauces infuses it with rich taste, while the provolone cheese adds a creamy finish. Perfect for a satisfying dinner or game day snack!
Ingredients: 3 lbs beef chuck roast. 1 onion, sliced. 4 cloves garlic, minced. 1 cup beef broth. 1/2 cup soy sauce. 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce. 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard. 1 teaspoon dried thyme. 1 teaspoon dried rosemary. 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. 8 hoagie rolls. 8 slices provolone cheese.
Instructions: Put the beef chuck roast in the crock pot. On top of the roast, put sliced onions and minced garlic. Put beef broth, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, dried thyme, dried rosemary, and black pepper in a bowl. Put this on top of the roast. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours, or until the meat is soft and easy to shred. Take the beef out of the slow cooker and use two forks to shred it. Put the onions and garlic through a strainer to get rid of them. Keep the liquid aside to dip things in. Set the oven to 350F 175C and heat it up. Put the halves of the hoagie rolls on a baking sheet. Put some shredded beef on one half of each roll and then put a slice of provolone cheese on top of that. Add the other half of the roll on top. For 5 to 10 minutes, or until the cheese melts and the rolls are just a little toasted, bake in an oven that has already been heated. Serve the sandwiches with the cooking liquid that you saved to dip them in.

Thinly sliced rib-eye steak, onions, peppers, and melted provolone cheese are cooked with this classic Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich recipe. The whole thing is then put on a toasted hoagie roll.
Ingredients: 1 tablespoon vegetable oil. 1 large onion, halved and thinly sliced. 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced. Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. 1 pound rib-eye steak, thinly sliced. 4 hoagie rolls, split. 8 slices provolone cheese.
Instructions: Over medium-low heat, warm the oil in a big pan. Season with salt and pepper and then add the onions and peppers. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are soft. Move the veggies to one side of the pan and add the steak slices to the other. About two minutes on each side to get brown. In the skillet, divide the steak and vegetables into 4 equal parts and mix them together. Cover each piece with two slices of cheese. Put the lid on and cook for about one minute, until the cheese melts. Warm up the hoagie rolls in the meantime. The steak and cheese mix should be spread out on the rolls. Enjoy while hot!

#Gordons #GordonsDeli #GordonsDeliItalianSubSandwich #GroceryStoreSubSandwichReview
I tried the Gordons 8oz Deli Italian Sub Sandwich and it was pretty good.
This sandwich was microwaved.
Mine weighed 184 grams.
The sandwich bread was firm but soft and had theses grainy texture on the hoagie sub roll.
The salami deli meat was thinly cut but soft in texture and tasted fresh and natural tasting.
These sliced deli provolone cheese was also thinly cut but tasted natural tasting while having a light provolone cheese taste.
The lettuce shreds were super thin while a little crunchy in texture that you don't really taste them in this sandwich.
This sandwich came with a mustard and mayo packets and these condiments went well with this sandwich.
These condiments tasted well with this sandwich with a light mustard and mayo taste that didn't taste salty.
The provolone cheese was melted and had a light provolone taste that didn't taste lightly salty.
This Gordons 8oz Deli Italian Sub Sandwich tasted like a high quality version of the Walmart or other grocery brand deli subs that would be refrigerated.
I would eat this again.
Got at Gordons near the refrigerated section.

I made dinner—it was delicious and you can make it too bc it’s like super easy just be careful not to burn, cut, or otherwise injure yourself in the process.
Now, let’s make a Zaxby’s-inspired chicken Philly cheesesteak (and make Philadelphians mad potentially)
Ingredients:
Chicken thighs or breasts—as much as you need. One and maybe a half thighs will make a single sandwich.
Onions and bell peppers—I used all four colors of bell pepper (red, orange, yellow, and green) and a sweet onion. I used fresh, you can use frozen and it’ll be the same
Cheese slices—any will do, take your pick! I used store-brand provolone. This also works without cheese if your needs require that
Bread—thicker crusts like a hoagie roll will be best, but use whatever you can get your hands on!
Butter or substitute—I use margarine!
Optional:
Seasonings—salt, pepper, or whatever you want to put on your sandwich! I used some salt, pepper, oregano, and garlic powder to season my veggies and chicken and it was delicious!
“Aioli”—mayonnaise, garlic powder, oregano; you can just use mayo if you don’t feel like mixing the stuff together!
Instructions:
Cut your veggies if they’re not already precut!
Season your chicken if you like!
SAUTÉ, SAUTÉ, SAUTÉ (cook the peppers in butter or a substitute until tender, then add onions and cook until the onions are soft)
Remove onions and peppers from on and set aside
In that same butter, you’re going to add your chicken. If you don’t like that, just use fresh butter or substitute!
Cook the chicken all the way through!!!! Very important, we don’t want salmonella! Make sure it is fully cooked by splitting it in the middle and checking if it’s white. If it’s still pinkish, it’s not done! Be careful!
Once the chicken is done, shred it with a fork! All you have to do is hold the chicken on one end, and drag the fork from that end to the other repeatedly!
After all that, you toast your bread if you like, add your “aioli”, then cheese, and then peppers, onions, and chicken (basically everything other than the chicken is optional honestly)
And voila! Delicious food that wasn’t that expensive and will fill you up! (I spent ~$15USD for a meal that served six with leftovers)
