And if I said I find Toby Fox's contributions to the OFF remake are some of his weakest work so far

#gost ramblings#off game#i have a lot of weird complicated feelings on the new battle themes and admittedly the sound design as a whole#but im not entirely sure how to explain it outside of 'why do the sound effects sound like they were just thrown together in a midi program'#song good but dont feel like they fully fit y'know?

Developer Pitch – Whispers in the Deadlands 2D Exploration • Monster Documentation • Moral Consequences
Hi,
I’m Colby, a writer and worldbuilder developing a 2D exploration and survival game called Whispers in the Deadlands. I’m looking for passionate collaborators—artists, developers, and creatives—interested in crafting a haunting, lore-rich experience with meaningful player choice.
The Game Set in the ashen remains of a post-apocalyptic world, Whispers in the Deadlands follows Cal, a lone survivor navigating the ruins of buried cities to document the monstrous creatures that now roam the land. Armed with only a stick and a field journal, Cal must observe and survive each encounter, using knowledge—not brute force—to unlock new abilities and evolve his weapon.
A key mechanic centers around moral decisions. Survivors call out for help as Cal travels, and choosing whether or not to assist them impacts the world in real ways. Those left behind may die—and later return as enemies, twisted by the Deadlands. Every encounter becomes a test of survival, empathy, and consequence.
Core Features
Atmospheric side-scrolling exploration through ash-covered urban ruins
A journal system that rewards observation, tracking, and behavioral study of monsters
Weapon upgrades unlocked by mimicking creature abilities
A morality system where ignored survivors may return as future threats
Minimalist UI, immersive sound design, and a world steeped in history and loss
Looking For:
2D artists and animators
Programmers (Unity, Godot, or similar)
Sound designers/composers interested in ambient or eerie landscapes
Collaborators who care about quiet worldbuilding, mood, and meaningful design
If this resonates with you, I’d love to talk more about the project. Let’s build something strange, quiet, and unforgettable together.
— Colby Message me if you're interested

The sounds of Tron-
Something that is often looked over is the fact that Tron not only has a connection with early computing but with early gaming as well. Not just because one of the characters makes games and runs a arcade, video games are absolutely integral to the world. In fact they make up a good portion of how the system looks and functions!
For example most of the transport, ships, and weapons we see come from video games, mainly Flynn’s but extends into encoms catalog. In the vernacular it’s common to mention it as well “video game warriors” “Gonna make you play video games” “video game simulation” etc. but you didn’t need me to tell you this.
The way video games impacted and shaped the digital world of Tron absolutely plays a hand in how seamless it translates into the two tie in Arcade cabinets. Though heavy on the grid bugs they’re beautifully decorated and similar to the games as we see them on screen/would translate in real life. The music stings come straight from Wendy Carlos’s work for the film, to the extent the game contains the entirety of Anthem. [Listen]

Sound cue’s and combat-
Part of what makes the sound and style of the game so accurate to the movie is the sound design. Like in old games there is a sound for everything. Every movement has its own sound, it sounds silly as things in real life also have noise but if you’ve ever played any retro game you know what I’m talking about.
One of the best examples of this is when Flynn is tossed into the cell and stumbles around, there’s a metallic echo to his footsteps. In combat it’s the same thing —very distinct sounds to go with every action. A lot of what older games are is pattern recognition- both visual and audio, certain music loops or sound cues help you get better at the game. Another good example is Tron casting his disc, blocking throws etc- if you know what a disc sounds like you can better dodge etc. I also like how they have almost a ceramic sound when Ram plays with his.
Nothing is more video game than De-resolution itself! The death cry and slowly breaking into bits before getting reabsorbed. You can hear the noise off screen and know what happened, game over.
Apart from video game comparisons I do have such a genuine love for the sound design of the film and how much it fleshes out the world. The blips and bloops of energy flowing through the system. The sounds of a working computer. There’s a dial up esc noise when Flynn is beamed in and judging by the guards reactions it’s not different from a how a regular program would enter/travel between systems. Programs get to make funky little computer noises in my heart 💕(another inhuman attribute I think they deserve, they’re like us in so many ways but then… aren’t.)
I know it’s probably just because it’s older recording equipment but occasionally programs will get a grainy feedback/radio style grain to their voice. I’d like to think it’s intentional- especially considering Legacy does this too (going so far for it to be what some sound like all the time)
The way sound is utilized in the movie is a incredibly underrated aspect of what makes the movie so good.

Hang on thought about pastry arts school again

#like. why and HOW did i go through 2 full years of college and not graduate with an associates#how did they get away with stringing me along for 1.5+ years as a pastry arts major with no pastry chef#the one pastry class i did have when i met the pastry chef before he quit. it was like. taunting#bc it wasnt extremely new info to me it was baking 101. but the chef was such an amazing teacher#and i was so excited to learn from him#and i cant blame him at all for quitting like bro i wouldn't wanna work there either !!!!#they couldn't hire another pastry chef for almost 2 years bc NO ONE WANTED TO WORK FOR THE PROGRAM HEAD#i know of 2 separate stories where one chef in the area wanted to get into teaching and then heard who the boss chef was and said oh nvm 😬#and one chef who got hired and then quit before he could start bc he couldn't stand to work with that man#like i Know the food service industry is tough and intense and chefs have a reputation for being jerks#i Know that. and multiple people warned me of that before i started. and sometimes im like wow i was wrong i couldn't actually handle it#everyone told me i couldn't handle it and i said yes i could and then i couldn't#but is that really what happened???? bc there were other jerk chefs in that school!! and still no one could stand that ONE MAN!!!!!#we literally complained to the president of the college. and she said uwu hes doing his best 🥺#bc thats the thing with him. you think hes nice until you're in the kitchen with him. he IS nice until youre in the kitchen with him#i truly think he designed the course in order to weed out the weak ones#and ig it worked bc so many people dropped out !!!!! but like . sir. i started that program at 17 years old#a fully prepared 17 year old. a smart 17 year old. a talented 17 year old. an eager and excited 17 year old. but a 17 year old#we were learning how to COOK not DISARM BOMBS. i hope hes glad that my 17-19 year old self got weeded out for being weak.#congratulations man you broke me.#literally he gave me the worst panic attack of my life on the first day and was so mean to me bc of my anxiety and how shy i was#to the point that i finally admitted i needed to go to the doctor#and then when i started some meds. and also was OUT OF HIS CLASS. and in the pastry class. and was a little more comfortable#he wanted to take credit for 'bringing me out of my shell' 😐 and i wish i had said what i was thinking. and looked him in the eye#and said thanks its cause of the drugs.#not only were the internship hours insane but also the class hours and the graduating test#i get that the classes have to be longer bc we need time for things to cook but . 8/9 hours ??? dudeeee#obviously i didn't get to the graduating test class thing but the way he described it sounded like torture 😭#and ofc you cant find that info online before you enroll. and they only offered it in summer#so if you finished in fall you still had to wait through spring to technically graduate. assuming you pass the week long torture test

#I love Bartholomew but his story only works as a video game and#Learning programming is not the hard part. I know the fundamentals. smthn abt the combo of ai and mobile ad spam creating this rise in cheap games designed solely to be products and often scams has like. fundamentally changed the way we look at video games now. for the better, actually, even though we think that shit should be denormalized as soon as possible for the future of the game industry. because before those things felt like such overwhelming parts of our life as someone interested in game dev it was veryyyy easy to look at a super buggy game with poorly made assets and laugh at it like lmfao bro thought this was worth uploading.... now the same exact types of games when we see people piling on them we just feel such an overwhelming sense of But they made something because they had a vision and even though they're an amateur they didn't shy away from sharing their work with the world and that's an amazing thing and we hope they continue to make the games they want to make....
and the people that complain on yt about someone's work they spent hours upon hours upon hours of so much frustration and pain working on and completing costing five dollars.... brother you are making money picking low hanging fruit and recording yourself playing a video game and the money you get from this is deserved. but the creator of the game you're making fun of for profit.... does not deserve profit for their work?
small game devs deserve money and they deserve to be celebrated also
#game dev is one of the hardest things and we feel like people underestimate it so much!!! esp if youre a solo dev which a lot of the people#making these 'trash games' are#you need to know how to make art you need to know complex programming music sound design ui design game design#physics marketing writing modeling etc etc etc#not only does it take time to build those skills but it takes time and a lot of trial and error to put them all together#obviously a solo dev's first original project is not gonna be the next call of duty#also if someone is honest about the contents of their game then however they price it is not a scam!#scams are deceptive but if you know what youre getting into then you consent to the price tag#this applies to a million things other than game dev too like most forms of art we see....#if they disagree with your pricing then its apparently a scam even though you know what youre buying and not being forced to in any way#maybe the reason why so few people have this sort of perspective is because they inherently see#all video games as solely products and nothing else. not art#surely there are video games that are just products. see all those mobile games pushed for quick money#but thats not what video games Are

dying listening to this interview with 14 (almost 15) year old michael. so cutie. the guy asking what award or achievement MJ found most personally satisfying and michael basing it on the literal design of the award 😭😭😭
#extremely sweet and extremely smart#and EXTREMELY hardworking#'what's the one with the 2 hands holding the earth...' awww#in some ways i feel like he was almost. 'brainwashed' is too strong#but he was programmed to work. to turn out hits. to be a child/teen idol. to speak well and dress well and be everything all the time.#him choosing a favorite award based on design is really charming and innocent. he had a sense of humility i don't see in his whole family#i think he felt more pressured to meet his family's expectations than to do well commercially#all the talk like 'that was a hit.. that was another hit...' they all talked that way#to me that sounds like adults putting words in kids' mouths#i'm sure they were genuinely proud but it feels like they heard the adults always talking about 'hits'#and then when they did it they were like 'look :) we did it :) here's a hit just like you wanted'#.....#'sometimes i cry cuz i'm confused. is this a fact of being used?'

As of yet unnamed game card art!
#pixelart#pixel art#card game design#card games#scottish mythology#Happy new year gang#I've been on my course for a good while now. I have a new very close friend from it and have made a few others as well#Our little group is in a discord and we're all a good bit nerdy haha#I'm far from the oldest one in the class/group which is always good to see#We got two weeks off for winter break which is great. We come back tomorrow. I'm not ready lmao.#But with the time I got I treated it like a game jam. Me and friend were like “we got two weeks let's make what we can”#And I wasted the first few days. Not by not working but by using AI to try and help with code. Turns out it's terrible at it.#I've been openly anti-AI but our course encourages us to use it for coding so I thought it would be good at games.#Nope. It's dogshit. It worked for a while but I ended up working so much more efficiently just making the code myself#So this new game. It's a card game. you might be thinking “This has nothing to do with the 16 characters you were making what happened??”#It's all connected. ALL of it. Greenhollow. HoaM. Elphame. This new project. The 16 characters. They're all connected.#It's gonna sound like the story will be oversaturated and it is. But I'm not worried about that rn. Just making sure the game is fun.#And I can confirm: The game is fun. It's playable. Graeme and I have been playing it a ton and I feel so happy. I love designing the cards#I don't want to explicitly state what's up but here's a clue: These 20 cards are all playable by the ISTP character#That will either make you understand completely or not help you at all.#Anyway. I'm tying in previous projects so they all get to tell their story. My sister made designs for characters ages ago#and I'm finally getting to show them. One is on one of these cards. But I intend to show all of them and tell all their stories#Of course since there are so many characters a lot of the little side stories will be optional.#I'm getting ahead of myself. But I'm loving doing art and programming for this rn. Tomorrow I return to DA lifestyle...#But at the end of the month I'll be a lot less busy and might get to work on this again. No idea of a release ETA#but in 2 weeks I've done 20 cards. I'm hoping for between 128-256 (I love symmetry). That said it's faster once I'm in the habit of it.#I have a little bit of programming left before this version is final (4 cards left) but yeah. It's looking damn good.#I'm not as manic as the last post but I am very proud of myself#Also 2024 was my favourite year for movies lmao. Inside out 2 wicked and sonic 3 were all amazing All 3 make me sob like a baby#2024 was crazy. I lived so much hahaha. I met a lot of people and travelled so much and got so fit (then lost it all in winter)

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get the line art of the symbols for the dress you are making?
I really wanna make some cross stitch patterns with them but do not have the skills to really lift them from the promo photos.
I don’t mind!
And I wish I had nice line art resources to give you, but I traced them all directly from the promo posters in the program I used to make the embroidery designs. :(
I should be able to get some screenshots of the finished embroidery designs, though they won’t be as accurate as even a regular tracing taken from the originals- they were traced, then I had to scale them down which lost some detail, and then I had to mess with line widths and even placement in some parts to get a design that would look right on the fabric. And lastly, the program can only show it as an embroidery- like it looks in the videos of the individual designs.
But, if you think that’ll be something you can work with, I can try and get screenshots taken for you and hopefully have them some time tomorrow?
#dead boy detectives dress#I really hope this doesn’t sound like me making excuses not to help#it’s on an old computer with bare bones programs besides the one for making the designs and one for running the embroidery machine#with no internet connection#any files to be imported to work with have to be saved on a USB on a different computer and brought over#and the same in reverse for anything going out#that’s why all the videos are crappy ones taken on my phone#and not nice screen recordings#But if you think screenshots of an interpretation of a tracing of the original design will work for what you need#I’ll do my best to get them for you!

It’s Friday morning “crying real tears about how Nina from Molly of Denali reacted to Molly surprise visiting her on her birthday” hours
#molly of denali#listen not that I don’t love LOVE so many pbs kids shows for babies/toddlers & prek but this show is more narrative and it’s SO good#*that are designed with those ages in mind as audiences#like it is a very very good show even aside from the educational value (not to sound like a 25 year old who regularly develops social skills#and new insights/knowledge from pbs kids shows and other educational children’s programming)#(the agere jumped out but also the just. appreciation of slow pacing and need for both clarity and emotional connection in education)#ANYWAY#not very relatable post#bdjdndmdndnsm but for real it’s so good and comforting and like yeah has very strong characters that are more complex than the shows for#younger audiences can be (not that I don’t love those too but they’re obvs less character and story driven and more abt like appealing to#very young kids while also getting across an educational message so it has to be more repetitive) (whereas Molly like I said is more of a#narrative bc it’s for slightly older audiences but is still slower paced and low-stimulation and very very sweet and educational)#*repetitive and also interactive#ANYWAY SORRY I’m having a moment sndndndmdnnd#also just realized Sesame Street has a Nina too and a leela which is similar to layla… leela Sesame Street is my favorite I want to be her#(she… she works at/runs (?) the laundromat)#(I love laundry)

she doesnt get a smash or pass bc. she is 32. i mean like shes programmed to age BUT the model itself is 17. so im just not doing it
#fnaf#five nights at freddy's#charlie emily#simons scribbles#simons fnaf au#programmed? idk anything about robots admittedly. im playing things safe. keeping this in my comfort zone LOL#she and sammy... are designed to parallel i mean they are twins. and she was literally designed. but by me i mean#i was gonna list them. but they sounded stupid. but i intentionally designed sammy to be similar/opposite to charlie#but charlie is simple and has no blemishes.... sammy has freckles and messy hair and sews all over his clothing....#i even posed them to fit this#augh. aughhh#anyway..
