2 Corinthians 9:10-11 (NKJV) - Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God.

Even if you do
Tumblr media
Growing up farming with my dad, we did things on a very limited budget.
Which means we didn’t buy new equipment, we fixed what we had. And we did it ourselves, because we couldn’t afford to pay anyone.
We saved back soybeans from this year’s crop to use as next year’s seed beans. And we planted them carefully, because that’s all we had.
Which makes it hard for me to get my head around today’s Gospel, the parable of the sower.
Because, in the parable, the seed is getting sown literally everywhere. Among the thorns. In the rocks. On the road. Places we never would have wasted our seed beans on.
Why? Because the parable isn’t about farming at all. It’s about the extravagance of God.
As Jesus tells us, the seed is the Word of God. God’s message of love and redemption.
And God sows that seed of love and redemption – and keeps sowing that seed – everywhere. Even places like the thorns and the rocks and the road, where it looks like God is wasting His time.
As Jesus tells us, the places that God is sowing that seed of love and redemption? They’re not really places. They’re us, we are those places.
And that’s the thing, no matter how many thorns we surround ourselves with, God keeps sowing that seed.
No matter how rocky you and I are, God keeps sowing that seed.
No matter how far our road has taken us away from God, God keeps sowing that seed.
Why? Because God knows something about you and me.
As St. John Chrysostom (today’s saint) tells us, the reason that God keeps sowing that seed of love and redemption is that “the rocky soul can in time turn into rich soil. Among souls, the road may come no longer to be trampled by all that pass, and may become a fertile field. The thorns may be destroyed and the seed enjoy full growth.”
God keeps sowing that seed. Because God knows that today can be that day.
Today can be the day that the rocky soul of someone you’re praying for starts to turn into rich soil.
Today can be the day that your road starts to become a fertile field.
Because you and I get to choose. When you’re tired of being stuck, you can start pulling out the thorns. When you’re done with wasting away, you can start picking up the rocks. When you’re tired of moving in the wrong direction, you can turn and start heading for Home.
And it will be God’s great joy to help you do it.
But know this – even if you don’t start today, God will keep sowing that seed of love and redemption.
Because God will never give up on you. Even if you do.

"The Seed and The Sower"
Beloved, you must ask yourselves, “Where have all these seeds been sown? Have they taken root? Or are they choked by the multitude of weeds which have sprung up?” Beware, for the birds gather, and wait eagerly to devour all seeds which have fallen by the wayside.
Thus only that which is first shall bear fruit; For that which is foremost bears fruit According to the Seed and The One who has sown it…
Yet that which is put first by men, which is Not of the Seed nor of The Sower, must die; It must be uprooted and cast into the fire…
Says The Lord.

Kohoku Cuisine "Sower" led by Chef Coleman Griffin is located in the auberge "L'Hôtel du Lac" near the shore of Lake Oku-Biwako in the Kohoku area of Shiga Prefecture. The restaurant "Sower" was established in 2002 with the definition of "someone who sows seeds" as a place where they hope to express reinterpretations of Shiga Prefecture's food culture and historical climate.
Our land has a history with Fukui Prefecture, linked by the "Saba-kaido: Mackerel Road". This exchange between us made it possible to create our own method of fermenting fish called "Naresushi". (Naresushi is a Japanese term meaning "fish seasoned in vinegar".) These regional characteristics attracted chefs from all over the world. They frequently visited our land to learn the methods, and it has been influenced their recipes and styles of cooking.
We welcome you here at the quiet lakeside with our 7 policies in mind, as a restaurant that respects our region, natural environment and craftsmanship and expresses them with the food we serve.

What’ll it be?
(for someone who’s stuck in neutral)
What’ll it be? What’ll you have?
It doesn’t matter how you ask it. The answer to the bartender’s eternal question? It has consequences.
It marks the designated driver. It shows wisdom in an unexpected place, revealing someone who knows their limits.
And it can separate a night you’ll want to remember, from one you’ll always regret.
Today’s Gospel is the parable of the sower. Well, really just the last part of it. Where Jesus tells us what the good soil represents, what the rocky soil represents, etc.
This one shows up a lot in the readings. So we get to hear this one a lot in church.
But whether it’s the explanation by Jesus that we get today, the short version we hear at Mass during the week, or the long version we hear on Sundays. There’s something missing from every version of this parable.
Bystanders.
The truth of the parable of the sower is that in this life, there are no bystanders.
There is no safe place to stand out of the way. No matter how much we’d rather not get involved, we already are.
We’re stuck. We have a choice to make. We don’t just get to pick which type of soil we’re going to be.
We have to pick which type of soil we’re going to be.
And just like the bartender’s eternal question, our answer to that question has consequences. Eternal consequences.
So what’ll it be?
