Under it was a high backed, black chair, decorated with skulls and femur bones. The femur bones were pretty small and I tried not to think about it. No, this wasn't a chair. It was a throne. In the seat of the throne sat a jack in the box.

The box was an antique and painted in shades of black, white and gray. The grip on the handle looked to be made of ivory. Or bone. I told my brain to shut up. The sides bore an old fashioned clown, a harlequin with a red nose and overexaggerated smile.

A board creaked behind me and I glanced over my shoulder to find nothing but a giggle floating through midair. When I turned back to Toby, a giant black and white clown was reaching toward me. "Oh Ticciticciticci Toby," the clown said in a loud flamboyant voice that was a mashup of an American accent and a British one. Like he couldn't make up his mind, "You're no fun! You bring me a pretty girl and I can't even scare her?!" The clown pouted.

When I say clown, I use that word in the loosest terms possible. The word clown just doesn't do any justice in describing what was in the room with us. This clown had long, shaggy black hair. His skin was bone white, his eyes were black like Jane's, and ringed with more black along with vertical slits. His nose was conical, in black and white stripes. A black, overexaggerated smile stretched from ear to ear, even though he was making his bottom lip quiver in a pout. The clown was so tall that he couldn't stand straight in the room. He was bent awkwardly so he could stand before Toby and me. His arms were too long, his legs, too. I did some quick math and realized this clown was at least nine feet tall. Black and white striped sleeves covered his arms and his shoulders were covered by a black fur ruff. A white button up shirt was covered around the midriff by white cloth bandages. Black suspenders held up tattered black pinstripe breeches, and black and white leggings fed into black, Victorian style boots.

I looked back up to the clown's face. He was smiling at me now, his eyes curious. His teeth were jagged and sharp, like a shark's.

"Hellooo gumdrop!" the clown sang "I'm Jack! That's, ah, Laughing Jack" Jack's voice lowered a few octaves at the end of his sentence, kind of singing, but out of tune, and I could hear a mechanical quality to it. He cackled and got back on track, "What's your name, pretty dame?"

"Might as well answer him" Toby sighed, "Or we'll be here all night."

"Grace" I told Jack, and Jack spun off into a loud version of 'Amazing Grace' that only got louder until he finished, actually going on one knee, arms raised in a "tahdahhh" gesture.

"This is already gonna take all night" I complained to Toby.

Toby smirked, then said, "Jack... Jack, enough!" Jack finished singing an encode, Alice Cooper's "Years Ago". "Look we really can't stay. I just need you to meet us at the old cemetery in Forest Lawn, two nights from now, two AM."
