11/6/24.
The other day we posted about a CD release from Christchurch, New Zealand band Springloader. The CD is released by longtime label Failsafe Records, also based in Christchurch.
I was further perusing the label's offerings the other day and I came upon this stunning compilation from 1986. This is the 2 CD compilation version. The theme of the CD is bands that went through Christchurch between 1984 and 1986.
This focus led to one of the most stunning compilations I've run across. This is a mix of the known and unknown from the fertile New Zealand scene in the 1980s. You'll find some of the finest Flying Nun bands, but much more. So yes, The Chills, Sneaky Feelings, The Bats, Bird Nest Roys, and The Jean-Paul Sarte Experience are here. But so are The Triffids and This Sporting Life.
Failsafe has another winner compilation, "South Compilation" that also has Flying Nun representation, but less so. And, also check out "Accident Compilation" for a compilation of Christchurch only bands from the early 1980s.

Dear Vector Prime, do Frostbite, Longhorn and Reptilion exist in the Viron cluster?
Dear Beast Believer,
I've already spoken about that incarnation of Frostbite, I believe. As for the others…
Longhorn was once a Predacon by the name of Ramulus. Known as a stern loner, he had been abandoned by his fellow Predacons after he became injured in battle. Luckily, he was discovered by an Autobot medic named Ratchet, who treated him despite his enemy allegiance. Ramulus was moved by Ratchet's kindness, and decided to abandon the Predacon cause. He became a Maximal, and changed his name to Longhorn to match his change of heart.
Tumblr media
As for Reptilion, he hails from a time period before the Cybertronian Civil Wars. As a Predacon scientist, he was a genius without peer who focused on studying monolithic Cybertronians such as Fortress Maximus. Obsessed with discovering their origins, he traveled far and wide in search of these Titans' origins, believing them to hail from a lost city from Cybertron's Golden Age known as Doradus. His only companion was his research companion, Springload, who transformed into a Predacon frog.
Reptilion and Springload both disappeared one solar cycle, and nothing was heard of them for some time. Eventually, one of them returned—Springload. He had clearly lost his senses, spouting nonsense that they had found Doradus and that Reptilion had been taken by "the great terrible beast". The Predacon Council of the time publicly refused to acknowledge Springload's story, but rumor has it that eons later, they used the data from his memory banks to construct their own titan: the Predacon fortress known as Scorponok.
No trace of Reptilion has ever been found. As for the claims of a "great terrible beast", Cybertronian legend speaks of such a creature by the name of "Trypticon"—but this apocryphal being has never been seen.

Quillfire/Springload, trying to find a way to make it work with Springloads acid secretions and Quillfires quills?
“Stay still!” Springload hisses, his frame strained uncomfortably trying to not be poked.
“I’m trying, it’s not easy when you’re rubbing against me!” Quillfire squirms.
“Well, if you would just- Ow!” The brown decepticon’s writhing forces a spine into Springload’s servo plating.
“Sorry!”
There’s a long moment of the two staying silent. They both know that they’re not the most amazing fit for each other. This will always be difficult, wether they like it or not.
“Do you want to do something else…?”
“Could we watch one of those human movies?” Quillfire says hesitantly.
“Yeah. I’ll get it ready. I- I’d kiss you right now if-”
“I know.”

I want to rig photomatt's mailbox with a comedy springloaded boxing glove except on the end of it is a comically oversized hammer.
It doesn't even need to hit him, just the jumpscare is enough.

Do you carry any other fun and whimsical things in your purse besides the brass measuring tools? can we see them??
"What do I carry in my purse" is actually a really long answer! Not very whimsical though.
Tumblr media
I don't carry a very large purse but it is actually jam-packed with stuff. Obviously the usual—credit cards, ID, badge, money, car keys.
But the rest is taken up by a tidy little lineup of things that are useless 99% of the time and crucial 1% of the time. Some of it (most of the top row) floats loose in my purse; most of the bottom row packs into the little bag there. My sketchbook du jour is usually carried separately.
Tumblr media
So: top row:
Sketchbook and the little brass drafting tools, which I carry inside the sketchbook, and also a little metal ruler that has honestly become redundant.
Then, a bunch of pens and marking tools: A ballpoint, some pencils, paint pen, permanent marker, white gel pens, white paint pen, white mechanical pencil, and eraser. This varies depending on what I'm working on and what I've absently left in the wrong place.
Some lip gloss, hand sanitizer, concealer, chapstick, nail polish, and heavy lotion (clay dries your hands out SO hard) and a hair pin. Usually there are several sword shaped hair pins also; I took them out while working on a project and they'll migrate back when I'm done.
Headphones, a couple knives, and a tiny foldable gerber multitool. A little flat card multitool, with a heavy needed shoved into its case also, and a pack of clear sticky notes.
A two-port USB brick; I usually also carry a power bank but it's charging in the car right now.
My change purse and my wallet, which is just the IDs; my actual cards are in a pocket in the purse that also has a little nail kit. My car keys, which have a bottle opener and a combined window breaker-seatbelt cutter, a 64 gig USB key, and keys to my studio, house, garage, and the courthouse.
Tumblr media
The bag itself is metal mesh, which means it’s durable but also somewhat see-thru.
That little tin is a tiny first aid kit, which probably I should have unpacked, but it's got bandaids, bandages, skin tape, blistex; antiseptic, itch, and burn cream; eyedrops; several small packets of common meds (tylenol, advil, etc) and a little folded chart for meds, since I’m terrible at remembering which can be taken with which; a breath mask. There's also a razor and some safety pins tucked in there. It's held shut with a hair tie.
There's some single-use earplugs and some zip ties, some more eye drops, and a tiny vial of liquid breath mint.
A deck of mini playing cards.
A tiny sewing kit--needles, pins, earring backs and pin backs, some heavy black thread on a bobbin, a measuring tape, and some foldable scissors. There's a couple glasses screws in there from before I had Lasik.
Another little multitool, some binder clips, a tiny level, a 120 gig USB, and some bobby pins.
Matches and a lighter, a flat pen, and coils of 20 lb fishing line, picture wire, and monofilament, as well as two short USB cords.
A tide pen and a glasses screwdriver.
The bag contains cardboard strips with several yards of tape: Electrical, packing, scotch, duct, gaff, and skin tape. Superglue. A spare piece of heavy cardboard to use as a cutting surface if needed.
An Xacto knife with the blade reversed (learned my lesson after jamming my hand into my bag and taking a chunk out of a finger when a springloaded switchblade opened itself) and spare blades.
Some more clear sticky notes and a tiny lined notebook for when I just need scratch paper.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My car actually includes two slightly different emergency bags—one for regular roadside emergencies (including emergencies in blizzard weather) and one for camping emergencies, and a bit more of an extensive first aid kit.

I have seen footage of the new mascot horror game finding frankie, and now that I kind of know the plot:
They made this for monsterfuckers, right? Like, the dynamic between frankie and the player, the whole "we need each other" end monologue, they want us to wanna tap the springloaded rabbit with massive teeth?
Because. Yeah. I can see it.

If you're keen, could you draw some combination of Ada, Meter, and Prowl being stupidly sappy together? Like Ada doing maintenance on Prowl's door wings? 👉👈
Or Springload being his anxious little self stimming with his foot springs?
I'm leaving it dealers choice to draw whatever catches your fancy/inspiration <3
she's bringing them to bed so they can sleeeeeeeppppp

11/2/24.
Thanks to Ian Henderson (Fishrider Records, Pop Lib blog) for posting about this lost/found gem of New Zealand rock. Springloader were part of the 1990s era of New Zealand music. Listening to the 4 songs on "Just Like Yesterday" it's really impossible to not hear the 1990s. Teenage Fanclub (listen to that guitar on "Just Like Yesterday"), Stone Roses, Ride came to mind for me.
Ian added some bands I need to familiarize myself with - most notably The Someloves. He also mentioned The Springfields.
This was recorded in the 1990s and now is seeing the light of day thanks to Failsafe Records (Christchurch, New Zealand). This label has been around since the early 1980s - they released the excellent Mainly Spaniards CD a few years back.
