hello hello, mini tournament time. first things first, nominations

you can nominate any doctor alongside any companion within the following rules

they MUST be an actual companion, not just any old character (I usually compare to this list, but I know its incomplete in some areas and includes characters i wouldn't consider companions in others so its not automatically qualifying or disqualifying)

the doctor and the companion cannot have met on screen, exceptions can be made if you have a compelling enough argument

they can have met in the eu provided it was only brief, so at most one story (i'm sure everyone has met everyone somewhere so it would be unreasonable to say otherwise)

in the hopes of this tournament not ballooning to ridiculous size, a maximum of one pairing per companion will be included in the tournament proper

The Corner that Held Them (Sylvia Townsend Warner)

a sprawling novel about a “Benedictine convent of no great note” that winds through several decades at Oby with the unending ever shifting current of the stream that marks the boundary of their land, shifting between the minds of its varied cast with ease. it doesn’t seem like it would be gripping reading—the petty grudges and predictable woes of the nuns and their village—but Warner somehow makes that dailiness transcendent, poignant, and darkly funny

Powers and Thrones (Dan Jones)

A history of the Middle Ages. Good so far as a kind of general overview that gives you a sense of the wider political and cultural currents/a sense of the motion of history. As always I crave details about the people themselves but I know this is somewhat limited by the subject matter and source material (Stacy Schiff manages it w/ Cleopatra though!!). Author loves to compare like, Byzantine chariot riots over the nature of Christ to 90s British football club antics regardless of how relevant the comparison is. which could get annoying but I’m choosing to find it amusing (I can’t help be charmed when someone’s own obsessions are clearly creeping into the work). He admits a bias towards/focus on “the west” in his intro and after reading the section on the various Islamic empires of the 600s I’d agree with his assessment. He tries to give everything its due but I have a feeling his interest lies more w/ post-Roman Britain so I’m curious to see if those chapters are more detailed

for eighth doctor companions i like to think that sam jones was the first (not actually the first, but in this lineup she is) n then came fitz kreiner . they went on a couple adventures together ! but like turlough w peri, as soon as anji comes, she leaves . for a while its jus fitz n anji . then trix joins ! shes not there for long until anji leaves . then fitz n trix leave together .

the first companion after grace from the tv movie was charley pollard i think ! then after charley, stacy townsend . after stacy, tamsin drew !

eventually, eighth is joined by siblings gemma n samson . after gemma dies, they drop of samson n pick up molly o'sullivan . they r soon joined by liv chenka !

fey n izzy sinclair join eighth sometime after liv n molly r gone . destrii is also there for a bit but i think would leave soon . fey leaves relatively early, but i think izzy stays as an on again-off again companion . she asks eighth to leave her places n come back for her . they comply, comin back to pick her up three hours after theyd first dropped her off in her time .

josie day joins eighth while theyre away from izzy for a while . when izzy gets picked up again, josie is there .

sheena is the last companion eighth has before they regenerate into the war doctor .

somewhere between josie + izzy n sheena would b lucie miller, claudia, n miranda - all separately . havent figured them out yet . also somewhere between his departure n the start of the time war, fitz comes back n permanently makes the tardis his home
