"I'll take you on!" Luke pointed an accusing finger at Renee.

"No, I can handle it!" Romin chimed in, stepping in front of him.

"I volunteered first!" Luke pushed back, sending both of them into an argument.

"I literally don't care," Renee said, unamused at their bickering, "How about you, purple boy?" She looked at Gakuto.

"I'll take you on," He agreed to which a wide smile spread across the girl's face.

"You don't want to duel me?" Yuga pointed at himself.

"I'm sure Neil would rather have you duel him so I'll leave you alone." Renee hooked her duel disk and so did Gakuto.

"Rush Duel!" Romin and Luke settled down upon hearing the two start and focused their attention on the duel.

"I'll start this off by summoning Starlit Leo, La Luna, and Sirius the Stellar Wolf," Renee began, "Then, I send La Luna to the Graveyard to Tribute Summon Nova Knight! I set a card and end my turn."

"I draw!" Gakuto started, "I summon Crying Moon Rabbit, Ancient Turtle Protector, and Masaki the Legendary Samurai. Now, I tribute Crying Moon Rabbit and Ancient Turtle Protector! Come forth, Kimeruler the Dark Raider!"

"Very impressive," Renee mused.

"It will be once Kimeruler attacks. I set a card and then Kimeruler will take out your Nova Knight!"

Renee: 3300

"And then Masaki attacks Starlit Leo!" Renee winced as her monster got destroyed.

Renee: 2800

"I end my turn."

"My turn then," Renee drew her cards, "First, I'll summon Starlight Spirit and Pyxis, Heaven's Compass. Pyxis' effect activates when I have three Light monsters on my field. I draw one card." She presented the card to Gakuto: the spell Constellation Barrage.

"Since I drew a spell card, I'm allowed to draw another card." Looking at her new card, a slight smile crossed her face and something lit up in her eyes. "Okay, I send Pyxis and Starlight Spirit to the Graveyard for a Tribute Summon! Weave and dance under the night sky and cast a truly illuminating spell! Starmight Sorciere!" The four kids stared up at her ace monster, a slender sorceress dressed in robes that resembled the night sky. Her white hair emitted a faint glow from under a large witch's hat and she waved a silver scepter through the air in one hand.

"Then, I also summon Astronomer's Apprentice. Next, I use the spell card Constellation Barrage. All Light monsters on my field gain 300 ATK and you take 300 damage for each Light monster on my field as well."

Gakuto: 3100

"I set a card facedown and then activate Starmight Sorciere's effect. I send the Level 5 Nova Knight in my hand to the Graveyard and then Starmight Sorciere gains 200 ATK times that monster's level. Plus, your Kimeruler will lose the same amount of ATK. Stellar Surge!" A shining aura enveloped the two monsters, boosting Renee's and draining Gakuto's.

"With 3300 ATK, Starmight Sorciere attacks Kimeruler! Dancing Constellation!" A matrix of stars shot from the sorceress' staff, entangling Gakuto's monster.

"I use a trap!" The boy countered, "Lucky Mask of Omens gives Kimeruler ATK equal to 100 times his level."

Gakuto: 2100

"Sirius the Stellar Wolf goes after Masaki the Legendary Samurai but they both have 1500 ATK so they're both destroyed."

"Why would you do that?" Gakuto asked after the simultaneous destruction.

"To do this," Renee replied, "Astronomer's Apprentice attacks directly!"

Gakuto: 1300

"I end my turn," Renee grumbled.

"Disappointed?" Gakuto noticed, "I draw! I summon two Nandes the Fire Awakeners. Then, I tribute both of them! Yamiruler the Dark Delayer!" The commanding warrior stood tall over the battlefield.

"I use Yamiruler's effect and change him to defense position so that you can't tribute summon any Level 7 or higher monsters next turn."

"That's quite the effect," Renee responded but didn't appear too phased by the situation.

"Then, since I have Yamiruler on my field, I can Special Summon this monster from my hand. Yamiluna the Dark Supporter!" Renee did pause at the appearance of another Level 8 monster.

"Yamiluna's effect changes Yamiruler back to attack position and he gains 500 ATK. I set a card and then Yamiruler attacks Starmight Sorciere!"

"I use a trap," Renee reacted, "Starmight Unite gives my monsters 500 ATK for each monster on your field." Yamiruler's attack was deflected by Starmight Sorciere's staff before she shot a beam of light at him.

Gakuto: 1000

"Yamiluna can still attack Astronomer's Apprentice though."

Renee: 2100

"I end my turn." Renee saw him grit his teeth as she began her turn. This would be over soon.

"I'll start by activating the spell Five-Point Beam. I send a Light monster in my hand to the Graveyard to destroy your set card." A star-shaped beam pierced the facedown.

"Then, I use Starmight Sorciere's effect again by sending Level 8 Starmight Asteroid Queen to the Graveyard. Stellar Surge! My monster will gain 1600 ATK while Yamiluna loses 1600 ATK." Renee met Gakuto's eyes, both of them with the realization that it was over. "Starmight Sorciere, attack Yamiluna the Dark Supporter!" A bright light filled the tunnel.

Gakuto: 0

"You did good, I will admit." Renee stood victorious as a penalty was inflicted on Yuga and his friends. "We should do it again sometime." Just as quickly as she had emerged before them, she skipped off, leaving the four alone in the Garden of Providence.

You hated this feeling, the heat of a hundred pairs of eyes burning holes in the back of your head. The decision to make things official with George was a massive step in your relationship. Months of sneaking around in hidden corridors, holding hands under tables and stealing kisses in the moonlight wasn't enough for the proud boy. It wasn't enough for you to just be his, he wanted people to know and more importantly wanted to make Malfoy know. 

The platinum haired boy had his eye on you the moment you stepped into the great hall on the evening of the Yule Ball, in a stunning baby blue gown that accentuated your gorgeous curls and perfectly done makeup. The one problem Malfoy had with you, however was that you were muggleborn. From that day on, he made your life a living hell. 

You took your seat in the great hall, across from Hermione, who was all too engrossed in the book she had her nose in, to notice that you and George had sat down. You immediately lent into his side, his arm slung around your shoulder. You had dazed off, and before you knee it, you had been absentmindedly staring over at the table of Slytherin boys for about five minutes. You hated the sight of him, Draco Malfoy was a smug prick who had nothing better to do to bide his time other than pick fun at other people. 

"Hey, Love are you alright?" George whispers sweetly in your ear, you nod and lean up to press a small kiss to his cheek, he gives you a reassuring squeeze before getting up, "I need to pee, plus I'm sure Fred's off getting himself into trouble." you grab his hand before he rushes off, pouting up at him, he chuckles a little, pressing a kiss to the top of your head before leaning to whisper in your ear. "I really won't be long, Princess, I promise."

Draco watched George leave with piercing eyes, before standing up nand grabbing Crabbe and Goyle by the backs of their robes to force them up also before making his way over to you, "Oh look, isn't it nice for the filthy mudbloods to all group together." he sneered, his harsh gaze never leaving you. Hermione scoffs, forcing her book closed, "Oh look, Is someone back to get punched again? I can arrange another broken nose for you, Malfoy, now shove off and find something better to do." 

Watching Hermione stand up to Draco every time he has something mean or hurtful to say was an amusing sight to see, but watching poor Malfoy run off with his tail between his legs was even funnier. "I don't know how you have the courage to stand up to him like that." you admit, grabbing a pastry from the platter, pulling a piece off to pop into your mouth. She smiles up at you, "You really get the confidence when you've already broken his nose once."

George returned back to you, with Fred behind him, In time to see Draco running out of the Great Hall, followed by Crabbe and Goyle. "What sent those foul gits running off?" fred jokes, filling up a cup with orange juice. "It was nothing, just Malfoy being precious about blood purity, as usual, I set him in his place" Hermione stated plainly, George squeezes your thigh under the table, causing you to look up at him, having a small conversation just in glances 'you okay?' you nod, arm linking around his before holding his hand that was on your thigh. 

It was an awful day for a quidditch match, it was thunderous and grey outside, each lightning strike made the whole pitch light up and erupt with roars of students supporting their teams. You were stood in the Gryffindor stalls, wrapped up in one of George's coats and a warm scarf, but not even the best outerwear could protect you from the torrential rain. 

The way the team played was absolutely phenomenal, Fred and George being star beaters as always had helped the team be up 30 points against slytherin. Harry and Malfoy were both nowhere to be seen, no doubt fighting over the golden snitch way above the low clouds that made the visibility during the match absolutely dreadful. 

Harry came barrelling down from the clouds, clutching the golden snitch in his hands, meaning that Gryffindor had won the match - news you were overjoyed to hear as now you could finally get into some warm clothing. You made your way down from the stands to the pitch where you'd promised George you'd meet him. 

"Good game, Harry! That Malfoy give you any issues above the clouds?" George joked, pulling Harry into a half hug before he was interrupted. "Seems you can't keep my name out of your filthy little mouth can you, Weasley?" Draco was storming over, clearly agitated by yet another slytherin loss to the Gryffindor team. "after all I'm not surprised, you have been fucking that mudblood Y/L/N for god knows how long, you don't know where that mouth has been."

"George, Leave it, let's go." Angelina turns the red haired boy away from the slytherin team, but Alicia, had already spoken up to fight your corner, "How dare you!" Harry pulls Alicia away before retaliating at the Slytherin boy "Go find someone else to inflate your ego" Draco laughs, slicking his wet hair back with his gloved hand "Finally grown a backbone have we, potter? Or did Mummy finally teach you to stand up for yourself… sorry my mistake, mummy's dead, isn't she?" 

This was enough for Harry and George, who had broken free of Angelina's grip, there were yells and screams as the boys brawled, the Slytherin team landing a few punches before George loses it , grabbing Malfoy by his quidditch robes, throwing him to the ground. He lands one clean punch to his ribcage, squatting down to get close to his face. "If you say one more thing about my girlfriend I will not hesitate to end you, don't look at her, don't touch her or even breathe the same air as her ever again, understood?" George's large hand had clamped around Malfoy's chin forcing him to look into his eyes, Draco was petrified, or at least he felt that way. 

All you could hear were yells and screams as you approached the two teams and you got the gut feeling that something wasn't quite right. You picked up your pace to run over to the group, seeing Harry and George bent down next to Malfoy, your eyes widening when you saw Harry had a bloody nose and George had a cut across his lip. Your hands wrapped around George's bicep, pulling him away from Draco, you looked back at him as he was still on the floor, he had tears in his eyes and his hand was clutching his side. 

George's arm was wrapped around you protectively as the team headed back to the changing rooms. “What happened, George” you whispered. “Later.” he replied quickly - you assume to stop himself from going back and doing any more damage. You were shivering as the rain had soaked you down to your skin, trying not to focus on how cold you were as you sat on one of the benches, waiting patiently for George to collect his things. He looked down at you, standing shirtless while he balls up his quidditch robes,only to shove them in his bag. He gives you a gentle smile, turning around to place some of his things into his lockers, as much as he was smiling, you knew he was still riled up, as the muscles across his back were tensing and untensing. You couldn’t help but think about how toned he was getting, your mind travelling to a more intimate space with him. 

You were only pulled from your thoughts as his warm hand pressed to your jaw, thumb running over your cheekbone, “Ready to go, Love?” he asks softly, you look up and notice that his lip was still bleeding, you frown standing up to wipe away the blood, he hisses a little dabbing his middle finger against the source of the sting, he looks down at the small amount of blood on his finger before wiping it against his jeans. “Fuck’s sake...” he mutters under his breath, you grab his hand, lacing your fingers together. “I’ll patch you up, Georgie, just tell me what happened.” He sighs, pulling your hand up to press a kiss to your knuckles. “Let’s go then.”

You decide on avoiding the common room until you’d patched him up, making your way towards the prefect’s bathroom. He explains that Malfoy was being absolutely vulgar with his poisonous words, not only joking about Harry’s late mother, but speaking ill of your blood purity, saying that it was enough to push him over the edge. You’d had him leaning against one of the sinks, as you work to mend his split lip, muttering ‘Episkey’ as he rambles about how out of line Malfoy was. “You know he said pretty much the same thing to Hermione and I over breakfast the other day, it’s been like this all year.” He moves to get up, but you stop him, pushing him by his chest to sit back down. “I’ll fucking kill him.” you shake your head, giggling and pressing a kiss to his cheek, only for him to wrap his arms around your waist, picking you up and spinning you around, causing your giggles to turn to full belly laughs. 

A loud cough caused you both to look toward the source of the sound, seeing Myrtle sitting on the top of one of the stall doors. “Oh how beautiful it is to watch you two!” she giggles “I wouldn’t mind seeing this Weasley shirtless!” your eyes widen, holding in a laugh as you look up at George. “He’s still my boyfriend, Myrtle” she gasps, dropping down from the stall, looking over at you both. “Fine! I promise it’ll only be a peek… no? I guess I’ll give you some privacy then” she rolls her eyes before whirring off to dive into her toilet.

“There he is!” Fred yells as you both finally enter the common room, “You should’ve seen him and Harry, it was like lightning how quick they were on that snake… Nobody speaks like that about Y/N and Lilly and gets away with it!” the older twin was gossiping to the rest of the weasley family, as well as some of their friends. The celebration was already in full swing, many students already tipsy off the firewhiskey and others huddled in groups talking. “Alright, Fred, It’s all well and good until they go and get themselves banned, or even expelled for brawling like that” Hermione adds, Ginny shakes her head, looking over to Angelina and Alicia for support, “he definitely provoked them, honestly the foul git brought it on himself” Alicia responds.

The more the night went on, the more obvious it was that George was basically undressing you with his eyes. You could tell the pent up anger was getting to him, he was sat in the corner by the fire, brooding, his posture was awful but he was sat with his legs spread, elbow propped up on the arm rest, biting at his nails. You had to admit he looked glorious, his hair had now dried up from the rain, leaving a small wave to the ginger locks in its absence. You’d changed earlier in the night to a pair of leggings and a sweater that used to belong to George, key word being used because you had zero intent in giving it back. He was looking you up and down as you danced with Ginny, Angelina and Ron. 

George pictured you walking over to him, straddling his hips and pulling him into a deep kiss. All he wanted was to run his hands slowly up your spine because he knows it drives you crazy, he wished he could pull your hair to expose your neck to him, he wanted to mark you so people knew you were his. He pushed the emerging thought of strangling Draco to the back of his head, replacing it with the image of choking you, his whole hand wrapped around your neck, and just squeezing as he’s fucking you into the mattress. Then he remembered the sounds you’d make, how your breath would shudder and how you would beg  him for more. He was driving himself insane, he muttered a low “fuck…” under his breath when you locked eyes.

Unknowing of his thoughts, you wave him over to the group with a pout, of course he concedes, pushing himself off of the chair, and walking over to you, he smiles innocently at you, grabbing your face with both hands as he kisses you. You go to deepen the kiss, after all you’d been watching him all night and you knew that the inevitable would happen; the way he'd started by cupping your cheeks, fingers threading to the back of your head, threatening to pull at your hair, he wanted you to moan into the kiss, but not here. He wanted that sound to be for him and him only. You pull away, saving your friends and his family watching the show he was putting on. He was restraining himself from throwing you over his shoulder as you look up at him with your begging eyes, that’s how this game started. Begging. 

He’d gotten into the rhythm of dancing with you when he leaned down to whisper on your ear. ‘Be a good girl and go wait for me upstairs will you?” you press a kiss to his cheek, before walking away from him, your fingertips being the last thing to leave each other. George’s eyes immediately shot to Fred, walking over to him with his hand shoved into his pockets. “My dearest Freddie-” Fred cut him off, rolling his eyes “I’ll keep them out of the room, it’s all yours… just no sex on my bed, I’d like to keep at least one of them sacred” George rolled his eyes, “It was one time, Fred” he goes to walk away, causing his brother to raise his voice “That’s one time too many!”

You’d practically jumped onto the redhead when he entered the room, pressing another kiss to his lips, glad you’d taken the time to heal it earlier on, he muttered a small ‘jump’ wrapping your legs around his waist. He did contemplate fucking you on Fred’s bed for a moment, but decided against it quickly. His hands found your ass, grabbing it with a sense of roughness, he wasn’t going to let go this quickly. the day of the caravan

The sales were greater while travelling compared to when they're just walking to neighboring town. She looked at why they stopped and saw a man and a boy at the side of the road, the man had passed out and the boy was shaking him awake . (Name) blinked.

"(Lastname)-san! There's some guys here!" Chiyo called to the back. Yana got down to help the two. (Name)'s father peered his head out, "A boy and his father."

"I'll go check what's wrong. They might be beggars that need help." Yana said, calmly. Chiyo hummed in agreement.

"They shouldn't be walking out at night," (Name)'s father said then noticed that his daughter hadn't been saying anything the whole time. He blinked and looked at her fear stridden face, her face paler than usual and her body trembled, "Daughter...are you okay?"

(Name)'s father held the rake in his hand tightly then he his something with his foot, something rolled in front of him. He looked down and despite the darkness, he could see Yana's head. 

Her body wasn't attached to it. just her head and her face had lines of claw marks so deep, blood oozed out of them. Yana's face was permanently stuck to a terrified look, her mouth open as if she was still screaming and her eyes were rolled to the back of her head.

Chiyo gasped and grabbed (Name) then they jumped out the carriage and ran to the opposite path with their lives on the line. Chiyo ran ahead, dragging (Name) with her who hwas difficulty catching up.

"(Name)....! (Name)...! Please run faster! I know it's hard...! But please!!" Chiyo begged, looking back at the younger girl with tears on her eyes. (Name)'s heart started to palpitate and her lungs couldn't handle the task of running so fast. Her legs were wobbling and she fell to her knees, dragging Chiyo who got up, "(Name)...! Get up!!"

(Name) panted do hard, she was sucking in air and sweat already layered her entire body. She felt like her head was spinning. At that moment, she cursed herself, why was she so damn weak?

"That was so... touching." The demon said, licking it's hands.  There was warm blood on (Name)'s face then she hurriedly gathered herself and ran, the demon did not chase her and she though the wisteria charm worked but when she looked down to look at it and pray, it had turned smaller.

She caught sight of the moon, it looked like a blur of white in the sky, "Yo...rii...chi..." The demon removed it's finger and held her left ear then in one swift movement, the demon plucked her ear off. (Name) screeched, her hand holding onto her left side of the head. The demon ate her ear. 

"No one will help you out here, you know." The demon frowned at her, watching her blood from her ear pool underneath her head. (Name) stopped struggling but just cried. Her body felt so weak and tired. 

The demon grabbed her left arm then pulled. (Name) could feel her joints cracking and popping and she screamed so loudly, it echoed into the night.

He looked at he with the same warm and sad eyes. She forced a smile upon her face and she felt him squeeze her shoulder a bit. She could feel no pain at all.

"Tsugikuni-san...did you come to save me...?" Her voice was very soft, her hand on the side of her head fell but he caught it but she weakly and shakily lifted that hand to reach his face and feel the ominous mark on his forehead, "...I think I realized just now..."

At her near death, it occurred to her some thoughts she had shoved deep into her mind because they were too hard for her to handle. At that realization, she trembled and smiled at Yoriichi. She stroked his face, forgetting that the blood in her hands were staining his cheeks.

"...You aren't like the moon at all...you aren't the blue moon...that I look at all night. You aren't...the blue moon...that comes and goes...once a month....yo must be greater than that...right?" Laughing softly, you turned back to face the swarm that was the square in mid-afternoon. Stalls lined the sidewalks and people were shouting as they haggled prices and tried to sell their wares.

The pumpkin spice bread warmed your hands as you squeezed between people and made your way back to your house.

Sliding around a fortune teller booth, where a young man with white hair sat, you finally reached your door.

Digging through your satchel, you pulled out your keys..and a picture.

Your smile faded into a sad frown as you looked down at the small painted piece of paper. In it stood two figures.

“Someone special?”

You jumped at the voice that spoke over your shoulder. Clutching the picture along with the bread to your chest, you whirled to see the same white haired fortune teller from before.

His boyish grin put you at ease slightly, he held out a hand, “Asra.”

Returning the handshake, you smiled shyly, “[Y/n].”

He laughed the sound infectious, “I didn’t mean to startle you so bad, but I saw you pass my booth and the way your aura seemed to darken when you pulled that out.” He gestured to the picture that you still had clutched in your hand.

Sighing, you pulled it out so that he could see it. In the portrait, the two people were smiling and close. One was significantly taller than the other with bright purple hair and piercing reddish eyes that held a hidden mirth behind their striking gaze.

“That’s me and Nadi….My...friend. From the North.”

Your voice slipped low, your heart aching. Nadia was more than a friend, but why were you telling a stranger about her?

Shaking your head, you turned back to your door, “Sorry, I really need to get inside. It was nice meeting you, Asra.”

You had no doubt Asra was about to say something else, but before he could and before you could open your door, a blaring horn pierced the air.

You and the white haired man shared a look of confusion before looking down the street.

Marching your way were military men in vibrant colors of purple and white. Flags waved above them, showing a white owl.

Grumbling you turned to ask Asra, but he was staring awestruck at the parade passing by.

Turning to see what had captivated his attention, you gasped.

You didn’t register the bread and the painting slipping from your hands and landing on the cobblestone street.

You didn’t notice the horns or the cheers of the people of Vesuvia. You didn’t notice anything but the purple haired woman sitting on an elevated chaise. A woman who you hadn’t seen in nearly seven years. A woman whose parents had told you to leave and never return or risk facing execution.

“Nadia..” Her name a whisper on your lips. And then a shout, “Nadia!”

You pushed, you shoved, you elbowed your way to where the chaise was headed.

All you could hear was your blood pounding in your ears as you frantically tried to get her attention amidst the crowd.

“Nadia! Nadia! Nadi!”

Her posture stiffened and your heart soared. Slowly, she inclined her head down and her eyes widened.

You could see her mouth forming your name nand tears finally broke free from your eyes.

With a flick of her hand, the chaise she was on lowered and she stood up, ignoring the people around her. You ran, breath gasping. And you flung yourself into the arms of your lover.

“NadiaNadiaNadia..” All you could saw was her name. Like a prayer. Tears soaking into her clothes as her hand slowly ran down your back.

She picked you up gently and sat back down on the chaise with you on her lap, “Proceed.”

You finally pulled away and really looked at the woman you loved. She was wearing a lavender gown with a gold corset, her hair up in a high ponytail, a crown settled in the long purple locks.

Reaching up, you pulled a lock of purple hair back behind her ear, staring up into her gaze, “I thought I would never see you again.”

Her voice was the same, cool as the streams from the northern kingdom, airy as the sunshine that used to shine down on the sunflower fields where you used to escape with the princess.

“I thought you dead, [Y/n]. Why would you leave me? Had I not given you everything? Had I not loved you as you wished to be loved?”

Even though her voice was steady, you knew her well enough to hear the hurt and pain behind her words.

You looked away, not daring to look her in the eyes any longer, less she see the tears once again welling in your eyes, “Your parents didn't tell you.” It wasn’t a question.

“The king and Queen never tell me anything. You know that after the years you worked in the castle.”

You sighed, gathering yoru courage, “The royal majesties asked me in for an audience Seven years ago.” You looked back up at the woman you loved. She stayed perfectly still, all her attention on you. That was something you loved about her, she never gave half of an effort. You didn’t even notice the streets the parade walked through, or the castle looming in the distance.

You took her hand, rubbing circles on the back with your thumb as you composed yourself and started talking again, “I never got the chance. Your parents were so angered at my interruption and proclamation of our love that they sentenced me to death for trying to reach above my station and sew seeds of bad blood into the royal family.”

The hand in yours gripped yours in a tight embrace. Looking up, you could see the dark fury in the princesses eyes.

“They will pay for taking the one thing I loved away from me.” The soft fury was more frightening than if she had shouted it.

A shiver worked its way down your spine. But you loved Nadia enough to not want her relationship with her family to fracture because of you.

Gripping her hand back, you got her attention. Speaking fast and with steel in your voice, “Don’t blame them, Nadia. They only were looking out for you. I asked to live, and they granted that, but only if I left the Northern Kingdom and never returned. And so,” You sighed, the steam running out of your words, “I have lived in Vesuvia for the past seven years. Never forgetting the stars in the sky from when we would lay in the sunflower fields all night, or the smell of Lavender as we laughed in your room. I have never once stopped loving you Nadia Satrinava.”

As her name rolled from your tongue, her lips slammed down on yours.

Mulchandani Takes Over as Head of US Joint AI Intelligence Center

In an AI leadership change at the US Department of Defense, Nand Mulchandani, who had been the chief technology officer of the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, was named acting director on June 1. He replaces the JAIC’s inaugural director, Lt. Gen. John “Jack” Shanahan, who stepped down from the post.

Shanahan, a three-star Air Force general, praised Mulchandani for bringing innovative ideas from Silicon Valley to the Department of the Defense. Mulchandani joined the JAIC in 2019 after more than 25 years as an executive in security software and enterprise infrastructure companies, according to an account in FedScope.

At his first briefing held on July 8, Mulchandani focused much of his address on the perceived rift between Silicon Valley and the military, according to an account in FCW. He referenced news coverage of Project Maven, which led to employee protests at Google in 2018, which as a result declined to renew the contract.

“There have and always will be specific incidents that make the news,” he stated. These incidents do not prevent the DoD from continuing to do business with major technology companies. “They are free to do business with us on projects across the spectrum from bending the cost curve to combat systems,” Mulchandani stated.

Project Maven, also known as the Algorithmic Warfare Cross-Functional Team, launched in April 2017. The Pentagon announced that among its objectives was to “help military and civilian analysts encumbered by the sheer volume of full-motion video data that DoD collects every day in support of counterinsurgency and counterterrorism operations.” The Pentagon had planned to have the first set of algorithms installed in its “warfighting systems” by the end of 2017.

The system was intended to help with identification of objects such as people and cars. Google was providing the DoD with TensorFlow APIs, which help military analysts detect certain objects in images, according to an account in Global News. Google decided not to renew its Project Maven contract in June 2018.

Mulchandani is to serve in an acting capacity until a permanent head is confirmed later this year.

China Acknowledged to Be Ahead in Surveillance Technology

He was asked at the briefing if China has taken a lead over the US in AI. He acknowledged China has a lead in some areas. “China’s military and police authorities undeniably have the world’s most advanced capabilities, such as unregulated facial recognition for universal surveillance and control of their domestic population, trained on Chinese video gathered from their systems, and Chinese language text analysis for internet and media censorship,” he stated in an account provided by the US Department of Defense.

The development of equivalent surveillance systems is not in line with US values, so DoD will not pursue them, Mulchandani indicated.

“Our constitution and privacy laws protect the rights of U.S. citizens, and how their data is collected and used,” he stated. “Therefore, we simply don’t invest in building such universal surveillance and censorship systems.”

DoD Seeing Turnover at High Levels of Tech Leadership

Elsewhere in DoD technology leadership, two top officials recently resigned: Michael Griffin, the undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, and his deputy, Lisa Porter. The two were top advocates for increased funding for defense research, and their departure as fiscal 2022 budget requests are being finalized, may signal a change, suggested an account in FCW.

“The National Defense Strategy emphasizes cutting-edge technology. And at least initially, we saw that priority reflected in DOD’s budget requests,” stated Morgan Dwyer, an international security fellow for the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He is concerned that losing the department’s top advocates could signal a decline in research funding.

As the DoD is finalizing its budget request in coming months, new technology will not have strong, Senate-confirmed advocates. “Without that type of leadership, I think it is unlikely that the [research] budget will enjoy the same priority that it did when it was led by Senate-confirmed officials,” Dwyer stated.

The DoD has no announcements on interim replacements for Griffin and Porter.

Public-Private Swaps Seen as Helpful to Meeting Tech Staffing Needs

One approach to filling vacant DoD technology positions could be a public-private swap, suggested Brian Drake, AI director of the Defense Intelligence Agency’s Science and Technology Directorate, during a panel at a recent GovExec virtual event, also reported in FCW.

“We have these programs already, called public-private swaps,” Drake stated. The challenge, however, is “often who will accept the government employee.”

As in which private company would accept the eager, motivated team player from the military, who most likely does not yet have deep technical skills.

“We’re very upfront about [being] in the infancy stages of this,” Drake stated. “So the employee I’m going to give you is going to be highly motivated, wants to make a lot of change, is going to be very loyal to your business objectives, and they’re going to be eager to learn. Will they be able to help you with your Python scripts? No, they probably will not. Will they be able to help you with building a robust data model? Maybe, it depends on who we have.”

Support for the public-private swaps was sounded by another panel member, Fred Allman, senior director for the US public sector business for Nvidia. “To go even faster, while reskilling and training efforts are underway, we must work with public and private partnerships,” across academia, startups, government contractors and commercial industry, Allman stated, “to raise the level of awareness and capability of our workforce.”

The Pentagon’s Joint AI Center wants to be like Silicon Valley

It was a busy week for defense-focused AI: DarwinAI signed a partnership with Lockheed Martin, the world’s largest defense contractor, to work on explainable AI for solutions. Robotics company Sphero, the maker of BB-8 droid from Star Wars, spun out Company Six, which will focus on military and emergency medical applications. And Google Cloud was awarded a Pentagon contract for its multi-cloud solution Anthos this week, even though the $10 billion JEDI contract between AWS and Microsoft Azure is still tied up in courts.

But one of the most notable contracts was a five-year, $800 million contract with Booz Allen Hamilton to support the Joint AI Center (JAIC) warfighting group. (Another contract to create the Joint Common Foundation, a cloud-based AI development environment for the military, is also in the works now.) This week, the JAIC also shared more details about Project Salus, a series of predictions from 40 models about supply chain trends in the age of COVID-19 for the U.S. Northern Command and National Guard. With Salus, the JAIC went from idea to AI for military decision makers in two months.

The JAIC was created in 2018 to lead Pentagon efforts to use more artificial intelligence, and is also tasked with leading military ethics initiatives. Perhaps more than any time since its creation, the JAIC is in the midst of change and transition. JAIC director and Air Force Lt. Gen. Jack Shanahan, who has served as JAIC director since its founding steps down next week. VentureBeat spoke at length with his incoming replacement, current JAIC CTO Nand Mulchandani about the future of the organization.

Shanahan spearheaded Project Maven in 2017 with companies like Xnor, Clarifai, and Google, where thousands of employees opposed the contract. For the sake of national security and the economy, Shanahan argues that business, academia, and military must work together on AI solutions as algorithmic warfare becomes a reality.

Although Shanahan retires August 1 according to the Air Force website, JAIC CTO Nand Mulchandani will take over as acting director in the next two weeks, a JAIC spokesperson told VentureBeat in an email today. He will serve as acting director until a flag officer or 3-star general is confirmed as director later this year. Unlike Shanahan, Mulchandani spent most of his career building startups in Silicon Valley.

In March, the JAIC finished revamping how it approaches AI projects and workflows and moved to adopt a different organizational structure; Mulchandani said the restructure makes the JAIC the only organization in the Pentagon with product managers and an approach to AI product development that resembles Silicon Valley startups and enterprise sales teams.

In an interview with VentureBeat, Mulchandani talked in detail about JAIC’s restructuring in March, how JAIC is helping the U.S. military develop predictive early warning systems, how the Joint AI Center will use Google Cloud’s Anthos and the $800 million Booz Allen Hamilton contract, and how COVID-19 is influencing the group’s operating mission.

This interview was edited for brevity and clarity.

VentureBeat: How will the Booz Allen Hamilton contract play a role in supporting JAIC teams? And will the Joint Common Foundation (JCF) or any other part of JAIC be part of the Google Cloud Anthos deal that was signed with the Pentagon earlier this week?

Mulchandani: We had to find somebody who could help us pull together the sort of software-hardware interface and bring that level of expertise in terms of dealing with the tactical edge or applying models to different form factors with drones and things like that. And that’s where the [Booz Allen Hamilton] joint warfighting contract came in for dealing with incredibly complex deployments across geographic regions, and dealing with different pieces of hardware, software, etc.

So that’s what we’re relying on them for. Their job really is to work with us on pulling in the best AI technology to be able to deploy, so in some sense, we’re not relying on Booz to actually build out all the artificial intelligence for us. They’re here to help us assemble and pull the best of these fits together.

Similarly, we have a Joint Common Foundation RFP out of the street that we’re actually going through the procurement process right now. We’ll have news on that hopefully soon.

The JCF is different in that it is a more of an AI development environment as opposed to an infrastructure management system. The basic goal is when we build out the JCF one day hopefully very soon, we will bring best of breed AI tools and products into the system to allow for AI development.

VentureBeat: So will JAIC be using Anthos then?

Mulchandani: That one [Anthos] came in from the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU). And the sort of multi-cloud model I mean, it’s tied up in this whole discussion around JEDI and cloud infrastructure and the JCF. The DIU did that particular one, and they’ve done it as a sort of general purpose contract that allows DoD customers to use Anthos as a multi-cloud management system.

The JCF is going to be fairly agnostic towards the infrastructure level stuff. We’ll support pretty much all the standard stuff that will support Google Cloud, Azure, Amazon — these are all targets for workloads. And when JEDI shows up, the JCF will be pretty agnostic towards all types of cloud infrastructure and targets. So it’s somewhat related, but those are kind of two separate things on that front.

VentureBeat: Can you walk me through some of the structural changes that the JAIC through earlier this year?

Mulchandani: The reorientation of JAIC basically came around the need for product managers and product teams that build world-class products, and we need a missions team with colonels from our military running those missions that understand to a very deep level what our needs and requirements are.

What we’ve done is taken two sort of key models and applied them. So one is the venture capital model, which is really more about how…we approach investing in and selecting the products and projects that we take on. And the other I would characterize as an enterprise sales model.

Those are the two models that we apply, because they are well understood. Thousands of companies do this every day out in industry in the world.

I spent 26 years in Silicon Valley before going to the DoD. I’ve been here one year, and the most natural pattern for me was the venture capital model because it deals with early stage technology. At the DoD that’s a little trickier, because this is the United States military, and we have lots of people who are trained in doing military things, not building software.

If you’ve ever been in an enterprise technology company, how we build and run sales teams and deal with volumes of customers, and how you triage them and grow that customer base to convert them from leads to customers. “Sales” could have a negative connotation, like we’re trying to sell something, but the way we’ve modeled it is more in terms of customer relationships and customer knowledge.

So we now have a product group that’s composed of a couple of key types of people. So number one is the product manager. The product manager is in charge of owning that sort of requirements-gathering, functional specs, [and] selecting and working with the engineering team to build this thing out and make it happen.

We’ve got a very robust AI and data science team. We’ve got a test and eval section testing products to make sure that they’re there, but it’s also imbibing and making sure that we’re following many of the ethical principles. And the missions team is really — you should think of [that] as our enterprise sales team.

VentureBeat: How is Project Salus a step in a new direction for JAIC?

Mulchandani: So what we did with Salus was a great example of this model, where instead of spending a year over-specifying the product, you get the core needs and requirements in a really basic depth. The funny part was the first version of Salus that we showed NORTHCOMM and the [National] Guard; in some sense, they were a little puzzled because they were like “What’s this? This seems like really, really half baked.” And we had to explain to them that this is the new world, right, that in seven days or eight days this is what you typically get.

It’s a bare bones product that barely works. Every single company that I started, you know, the first board meeting after we raised a couple million dollars from investors, you go show the first product, the “Hello World” product to the board, and if they haven’t done venture capital before or early tech, some of them do fall out of their chairs and say, “Wait, I just spent a couple of million bucks for this company and this is what you built?” It’s like, well no, it’s not ready yet. We’re going to stay close to you and learn what you want and what you need, and we’re going to iterate with you.

VentureBeat: How is COVID-19 sort of changing the way that JAIC looks at its mission, or things of that nature?

Mulchandani: What [Salus] actually taught us to do was to get this sort of concept of code thing into practice, this idea of having the product manager, project managers, the legal and policy folks, the test and eval, everyone; co-residents, the missions team, all aligned and working together. We basically want to bottle this up this experience and this method of building products, and we want to replicate it.

This all stemmed a lot from an off-site that we did a couple months ago. And it gave us a chance for the entire JAIC to actually go off site, sit together, think, ideate, spend some time together outside of the office. And one of the things that struck us was every great organization has a business model and a business plan that it operates on.

When you start a company. What is your world-changing idea? What’s your business plan and model to go attack that business plan? That led us to our mission and charter around leverage and creating repeatability and industrialization and scale around AI.

VentureBeat: In an interview earlier this week, Lt. Gen. Shanahan brought up this notion of a national predictive warning system and that JAIC will be involved with more of that in the future, in part to respond to COVID-19 and as part of a general effort to make the DoD more predictive than reactive. Can you talk a little bit more about that idea of creating early warning systems with AI?

Mulchandani: Typically in the popular imagination, AI always immediately folks go to killer robot and Terminator immediately. But what you’re going to realize is the biggest revolution that’s going to occur with AI in the short term, and is already happening, is in decision support.

That is the biggest and most critical area where it can aid and unambiguously support, and [it’s] also easily deployable without any of the sort of ethics and other issues that we’re grappling with longer-term around the economy and things like that.

What makes AI so powerful — and this is where Lt. General Shanahan, and all of us are sort of pushing this idea of this area in AI — is the ability to highlight and come up with a non-obvious result. When you look at many of the more surprising results in AI recently — all the stuff around Go for instance — the one phrase that we all have to look at is the one which says, the computer behaved in a non-human way. That to me was the critical insight into that whole drama — the non-obvious nature of the solution that the system came up with. And that typifies AI, and that’s where it’s different from statistics and the normal math that people use.

It’s the non-obvious things that humans won’t think about, which is where we’re going with predictive capabilities, and we want to apply this sort of model, not only to pandemic modeling, but of course, we’re going to apply this to … joint warfighting and many of the decision support stuff that we need at the DoD to be able to fight and win the next war if and when it happens.

Let me say it straight away— I am not a big fan of food shows. Cruelly aspirational, my kitchen looks nothing like the fancy ones on the show, and even if I were to follow the simplest of recipes, where the chef du jour is just throwing things together to create a fabulous dish, it would unfailingly turn into an unpalatable mess.

Being vegetarian by choice, I find it difficult to watch all that meat. But duty calls and as I dived headlong into the world of food shows on streaming platforms, I discovered the meditative calm of sushi, the anthropological evidence for Prometheus, the heart-breaking beauty of Havana, the unfailingly-disturbing Lord of the Flies and the joy of desserts. One of my favourite Bob Dylan lines suddenly popping up in the middle of a show was an added bonus. So here, in no particular order, are 10 shows you could check out to learn about the emotions, history and techniques of food.

MasterChef Australia

Disney+Hotstar, Seasons: 12, Episodes: 768, Runtime: 30-120 minutes

With new judges, restaurateur and chef Jock Zonfrillo, food writer Melissa Leong and season four winner Andy Allen replacing Gary Mehigan, George Calombaris and Matt Preston, Season 12 of the cooking reality show is different yet with the same amounts of drama and intrigue. The mystery boxes, pressure tests, and immunity challenges do not fail to thrill as contestants create works of art from duck’s oesophagus, (really) chocolate, parsnip, parsley, fennel coconut, chilli, mango, lemon chicken and potatoes.

A mild Gordon Ramsay and Katy Perry are celebrity judges while the contestants are winners from previous seasons. If reality shows are your thing, you cannot go wrong with this veteran based on a British show from the 90s where amateurs and home cooks competed for the ultimate cooking prize. Season 12, which started to air on April 13, is into week 5 which is the Twists Week.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi

Netflix, 81 minutes

When the hurlyburly’s done, when the battle’s lost and won, (cooking and restaurants always remind me of Macbeth), it is time to move to sushi. David Gelb’s documentary about an 85-year-old sushi master, Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011) is beautifully calm. While the movie is all about the perfect cut, the freshest seafood, massaging the octopus for 45 minutes instead of 30, Jiro Dreams of Sushi also tells the story of fathers and sons.

Jiro Ono started working at the age of seven at a local restaurant. A formal portrait of young Jiro with his father holding his hand is all he has of his father, who seems to have lost his money and taken to drinking. Jiro says he did not go to his father’s funeral. Jiro’s elder son, Yoshikazu (50) who will eventually take over the restaurant, still works for his father. Jiro speaks of the kind of tough love he has dispensed to his sons (the younger son has opened his own sushi restaurant) to ensure they will be able to carry on. Even if you are not a fan of sushi, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, with its evocative music and dazzling photography is irresistible.

The Chef Show

Netflix, Seasons: 3, Episodes: 20, Runtime: 26-34 minutes

This is a delightful show for all nerds, geeks and comic-book fans. In 2014 Jon Favreau wrote, acted and directed Chef, a charming film about a successful chef who gives it all up to run a food truck. Roy Choi, the creator of the gourmet Korean-Mexican taco truck, Kogi, was consultant for the film and trained Favreau on all the ninja chef moves.

Incidentally, Favreau directed Iron Man, the movie that set the ball rolling for the gargantuan Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Chef Show which premiered on June 7, 2019 is a spin-off of the film and features Favreau and Choi experimenting with fun recipes (yes that grilled cheese is a star) and breaking bread with some of the biggest names in the entertainment business. It was fun watching them do a pepper pot for Gwyneth Paltrow (nudge, nudge) at Goop and have Tom Holland discuss his audition with Robert Downey Jr.

Ugly Delicious

Netflix, Seasons: 2, Episodes: 12, Runtime: 45-55 minutes

Chef David Chang uses popular food to dissect the concepts of travel, history, culture and the notion of authenticity. The first episode, which premiered on February 23, 2018 looks at pizza—from the uber traditional pizzas in Mark Iacono’s pizzeria, Lucali, in Brooklyn to a tuna mayonnaise one in Savoy in Tokyo and one from Dominos! There are also stops in Frank Pepe in Connecticut, Antillo’s pizzeria in Naples and Bæst in Copenhagen.

With a variety of guests, including food writer Peter Meehan, comic Aziz Ansari and TV show host Jimmy Kimmel, Ugly Delicious is an in-depth look at everyday food. Watching Chef Floyd Cardoz enjoying Awadhi cuisine in the episode on Indian food, which also featured Padma Laxmi, was particularly poignant as Chef Cardoz passed away on March 25, 2020 of COVID-19.

Salt Fat Acid Heat

Netflix, Seasons: 1, Episodes: 4, Runtime: 40–48 minutes

The four-part show, which premiered October 11, 2018, is based on Samin Nosrat’s bestselling cookbook, Salt Fat Acid Heat (2017). The show sees the chef, TV show host and food writer travel the world to investigate the four pillars of cooking namely salt, fat, acid and heat. She travels to Italy to explore fat and the concept of “noble meat,” Japan for salt, Mexico for acid and Chez Panisse (where she worked her way up from bussing tables to chef) for heat. Salt Fat Acid Heat is an interesting way of looking at food buttressed by a charming host and Instagram worthy locales.

Cooked

Netflix, Seasons: 1, Episodes: 4, Runtime: 50-58 minutes

Samin Nosrat is described as “the chef who taught Michael Pollan how to cook” and features in Cooked, Pollan’s four-part documentary based on his eponymous book. The documentary travels the globe to explore the different aspects of cooking, which serendipitously correspond with the four elements—earth, water, fire, and air. Pollan, a writer (The Botany of Desire, The Omnivore’s Dilemma) activist and professor looks at the socio-cultural impact of food on our lives.

It also revealed the workings of a restaurant including the family meal, where the crack pie (a pie so good it is addictive) was born. Seeing David Chang (he hired Tosi and encouraged her to open the Milk Bar) gives that special joy of connections.

In the first episode, which aired on July 7, 2017, he zips through his sales calls to visit the Kanmidokoro Hatsune, a traditional sweet shop in Ningyōchō. There he samples anmitsu and is transported into dessert fantasy. His rhapsodies over the jelly, fruit, gyūhi and agony over choosing between white and black syrup are endearing.
