i was wondering your thoughts on kurt nightcrawler’s connection to romani heritage, considering he was raised by a romani mother

I answered a question like this a while back!

I think that someone in Kurt's position could identify as Romani, and be recognized as such. Being raised in the culture and having family/community who recognize and claim you is often just as important, if not more important, than your biological ancestry. This is part of something called romanipen. 

The problem here is that most writers avoid identifying Margali as Kurt's mother, or Stefan and Jimaine as his siblings, for reasons you can probably imagine. They have also failed to ever interrogate or establish what sort of relationship Kurt would have to Romani culture. We have no real sense of what was imparted to him by Margali, and no real sense of how that informs the way he relates to majority culture, especially his Catholicism, which was acquired after he left the Szardos family. These are not questions that gadje writers think to ask. This interiority is not part of how they imagine us, or why choose to include us in their narratives.

If it were up to me, I would make it clear that this character identifies as a member of the community, if not necessarily as a rom himself, and I would make a point to show that he still has deep ties to the community and culture. In my ideal world, where I get to rewrite canon, I would just make the character Romani because he's just a character that would make a lot of sense as a Romani man-- to me! Plus I think that adding a textual race element to the way he is otherized would enrich his metaphorical mutant experience.

Margali Szardos is such an insane character. She was a good mom to Kurt, Amanda, and Stefan but she's also an evil power hungry shapeshifting sorceress who regularly tries to kill her two remaining children.

you know for the longest time I genuinely liked Margali's character but I came to the realization that it was more a case of me liking what she represented than anything else. like how she was someone who mastered magic through years of hardwork, took Kurt in even tho she was already raising two kids alone and acceptef him as part of her Romani community but sadly got corrupted by a desire for power and lost herself in it. now I realize that this was just the supposed premise she was sold as while constantly and horrendously being mishandled on every aspect by every writer that ever worked on her.

from her relationship with nightcrawler compared to the one she has with her own kids (dunno how to explain, it's like they are Kurt's family but they themselves aren't a family amongst each other?? if you told me they were recently fostered kids while kurt was her bio one, i'd believe you), her being fine with two of her kids getting in a relationship with one another pre/post stefan's death (she might be the reason why stefan was also fine with it cuz he apparently knew ??), murdering people no big deal for years like Kurt's trapeze teacher whom he'd known since he was a child (the only reason she is even magically strong was from killing other magic users so the hardwork part is flimsy at best), her longtime manipulation and abuse to her children (the soulsword deal was recently brought back and amplified), magic seemingly being the only cultural heritage she shared with her family (no but really) to how she's called the Romani queen without being part of or ever interacting with any Romani community (did the Szardos even spent time with any Romani other than each other? Cuz Kurt is the only kid amongst his siblings with a social life and it was with the circus people, village/foreign folk and random priests), everything here contradicts her premise from day one.

i wouldn't even call her a compelling villain because those bits seems to have been carelessly thrown around with no thought put into them it's honestly frustrating. no buildup just straight up "Margali feels like being evil again". real waste i swear

Yeah Margali really is wasted potential, I feel like she would make more sense as a heroic sorceress than whatever the heck they tried to make her.

I am guessing the way she views her kids is a result of several writers inconsitencies, its so infuriating how a lot of them seem to NOT understand how adopted families work even though almost every superhero is an orphan? you'd think they'd understand it better.

I feel like someone needs to go back and write a better story or alternatively whenever this story gets adapted they need to portray Margali as someone who looks sinister but is actually a good person and write the Szardos family as a FAMILY

Into the Nightverse

Like I said this blog is based on the MCU storyline combined with the other X-Men movies and my own stuff

Kurt is in no relationship and aroace.

His age varies depending on the timeline. As default I play him as high schooler aged 17-18 as he was in the newer X-Men movies. So if we didn't say anything else this is what I'm going with.

He is the son of Mystique and the Neyaphem leader Azazel but he never met his parents, who abonded him. He was found and raised by Margali Szardos and had a happy childhood despite his devilish appearance.

He was part of a circus and was performing as a trapeze artist in the carnival alongside his adoptive siblings Jimaine and Stefan.

His brother became a vile mass-murderer and Kurt executed him unintentionally, which made the people believe Kurt was a murderous demon. They hunted him down wanting to lynch him.

Kurt fleed the mob and was found by people who sold him and unwillingly brought to a German fight club against fellow mutant Angel. He got was liberated by his mother who didn't knew that this was her son. Kurt was brought to the mutant tracker Caliban by her, to get him a passport out of Germany and he came to the US.

Because of his apperence the people feared him and hunted him down again until he was saved by Professor Charles Xavier. He invited him to join the X-Men and enrolled him into Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.

Since he joined the X-Men he helped to take care of and fight other mutants. They always stayed hiden from other humanbeings to not draw any attention to the existence of mutantkind. They thought this would be the smartest because humankind wasn't ready to except them a part of society yet. For this Kurt recived a device so he can change his apperence to look like a normal human.

He always fought apart from the Avengers and in secret against threats like the Chitauri Invasion and Ultrons minions. Later he got snaped by Thanos and brought back again by the Hulk.

Honestly the nicest I'll ever be to Amanda sefton is completely wiping away the whole dating Kurt and being gross and writing her as his actual sister, I wish they could've been portrayed in a healthy sibling relationship the same way Kurt and Stefan were. I think id like Amanda more if she were a sister to Kurt, but she isn't, especially not like rogue is. It could've been cool for Kurt to have a sorceress sister he could always count on but no, we just a gross wicked witch. But she does make a good villain that's for sure

Margali made sure they didn’t.

Stefan and Jimaine didn’t help either.

And, should he call Raven and Irene family? He doesn’t know. What he used to think and feel about them has changed but it’s extremely far from what it should be or, at least what Raven would have wanted?

Well, he doesn’t know what she wants. He knows she did want him and that healed a few pieces of his broken heart however, as much as he could try, he also knows Raven is an expert in lying, in manipulating, and, and…

No, don’t go there.

Kurt Szardos is on his bed, still recovering from Limbo(his magic is affected the most by that place or maybe is his soul, whatever the cause is...Szardos is afraid and hopeless to heal quickly as Logan) and the wizard is set straight on his bed waiting for his mana recover.

The X-men are dealing with great additions. Illyana Rasputin´s got new tricks(and a few issues as she´s still missing Persephone dearly) and Piotr is put on his place as the horrifying reality where he can´t control Yana is finally punched him in the face.

Ororo vouch for him as once Agatha show up(much to his dismay and dissatisfaction as the old woman clearly won´t make his plan go smoothly, but, then again, he was expecting such thing) and told everyone about Kurt´s foster family and cast a bit of shadow of doubt on the others, everyone but one person.

"Kurt?" Kitty phases the door and hugs him once he offers a more optimist smile. "Are you feeling better?" her tone is laced with worry and it set his heart in delight. And gets wilder as Kitty hugs him and sits on his bed and waits for his response.

(She´s 15 years old, Kurt, don´t be a creep...)

"I´m feeling better, still tired, but better" is the truth and Kurt is ready to sleep the entire day, however, Kitty seems to want to spend time with him.

"Agatha talks about the X-men about your foster family and I...defend you, I may not like your family, but, I don´t think we should judge the sins of the parents on the sons" Kitty replies kindly and this really make him smile.

Kurt knows he must talk about Belasco´s favour he now owns, but, at the moment, he can have a nice moment with his soulmate.

Margalia is not happy as Stefan, once fucking Amanda like he never saw a woman in his entire life, retell the story of his friend´s failure and Margalia is now sure if she wants to get rid of Kitty Pryde, then, Margalia must take matters on her own hands.

"If my useless daughter and son aren´t cable of killing a teen witch, then, I must take matters on my own" Margalia said in disgust at the lack of success of her two children and this seems to finally cut the erotic atmosphere both were having for each other.

"I can take her down, mother, she´s a boring look girl...I can use her vanity against her" Amanda pleaded almost crying and Margalia almost slaps the woman, but, control her temper. No need to hit on her beautiful daughter.

"No, she´ll never believe in a word you may say...I need to call the best of the best..." Margalia gives a wicked smile as she uses a spell to connect with Emma Frost´s mental link. "Emma, are you still looking for a red Queen?"

Emma Frost offers a smile that means business and Margalia is a good investment. And if the price is killing this Kitty Pryde, well, Emma won´t share a tear for this little loss.

He was found and raised by the Romani witch Margali Szardos and lived a happy childhood despite his devilish appearance. He performed as a trapeze artist in the carnival where his adoptive family worked, alongside his siblings Jimaine and Stefan. After Stefan became a vile mass-murderer in Winzeldorf, Kurt unintentionally executed his own brother. Their conflict caught the attention of a mob, who believed Kurt to be a murderous demon and decided to hunt and lynch him. Kurt was ultimately saved by Professor Charles Xavier of the X-Men, who invited him to join the super-hero mutant group as Nightcrawler.

Teleportation, physical mutation (demonic appearance, blue skin, tail, wall crawling,...), immortality, night vision, camouflage. After his resurrection, his teleportation power has expanded allowing him a level of consciouness on his Brimstone partake, enabling him to actually be awake when within, accessing it as a mean of a window to spy, hide further than with his previous camouflage ability, etc. It’s also granted him a further control over distance and absorb the momentum that he’d previously keep. Additionally, he’s awakened a secondary mutation, inheriting his mother’s shapeshifting to her degree of control. He can open a surrounding area allowing the gasses from the brimstone dimension to filter in causing a toxic and debilitating area for weakening his enemies.

AU Nightcrawler for all that I can be bothered writing. I’ll be using Ben Barnes as a FC and you’ll have to imagine he is blue and yellowed eyed, and his tail and whatnot. Unlike the initial movie interation, he would only use it to blend in if in dire need of hiding, because he would not easily hide his looks to the public.

As a member of the X-Men, Nightcrawler paid the ultimate price to ensure the survival of the first mutant born after the M-Day, Hope Summers. Years later, he found his way back to the land of the living and to the X-Men.

  When all mutantkind resettled on the island nation of Krakoa, by Professor Xavier's request, Nightcrawler was one of the first mutants to join. He was eventually offered a position on the Quiet Council of Krakoa, the supreme body of mutant government. Realizing mutant society was deeply altered by the migration to Krakoa and being a religious and spiritual believer himself, Nightcrawler shared his intentions of creating a mutant religion.
