How UBER in SOUTH AFRICA failed me
A few days after Christmas of 2022 I sold my car. The plan was to take the money from the sale and grow it for about 8 months to use as a deposit for a new car. While I was doing this I would then use UBER as my main form of transport. What a joke that turned out to be. Hailing a BLACK ride from my home to Stellenbosch was impossible. They never came. I always had to downgrade to COMFORT. A few weeks later while on my way to Stellenbosch a driver mentioned that using the UBER Wallet scares off drivers as they see it as a CASH payment. Switching to paying with my credit card made a big difference as I suddenly had BLACK rides picking me up in Stellenbosch to drive back home. But hailing a BLACK ride from home to Stellenbosch still proved problematic with waiting times of up to 55 minutes or no ride at all. On the odd occasion that they came it was usually someone that was returning to Cape Town from Franschhoek with some commenting that I was lucky. Most times I had to downgrade to COMFORT and they would usually take about 30 minutes to get to my pickup point. Then I got invited to a family gathering. On a Saturday afternoon I hailed a BLACK ride which amazingly came, after 55 minutes waiting time. It was nice seeing my cousins again and time passed quickly. Then someone reminded me to hail a ride which I did at 9:30PM. The driver that was supposed to pick me up messaged me asking where I was going. One cousin told me to cancel it as they sometimes scam people that way by cancelling the ride a few minutes before pickup time with you having to pickup the bill. I downgraded and after about 40 minutes got another message from a COMFORT ride but at least he was on his way. It seemed like a nervous ride back home as the guy was speeding, but I got home safe and sound. A few weeks later I got a similar invite but this time around I would use their scheduling feature. This turned out to work as expected. Drivers were there on time and in one instance actually waiting for me. But this feature came at a premium so I had to be selective with using it. Also, as a car enthusiast, the one other thing that bothered me a lot was the quality of cars classed as BLACK rides. I can recall 4 that were new-ish, nice and clean. The others were old and tired. Just because its got the three pointed star on the bonnet does not make it worthy of a BLACK ride. My takeouts from these experiences: 1. Use a credit card as payment source 2. Live very close to or in a CBD 3. If possible get your own car, like I did in the middle of March 2023

"Love and hate: same-same" : A review of Patchwork by Ellen Banda-Aaku
I have to admit that in my desire to read more fiction written by Zambian writers, I did not anticipate that I would find a novel like Patchwork by Ellen Banda-Aaku. I was looking for a book by Warsan Shire in the Stellenbosch University library when I stumbled across Banda-Aaku’s novel. I had previously come across her name whilst doing research for my honour’s long essay. Although her name came up in my search for critically acclaimed Zambian writers, I did not bother to look up her work. I am grateful for this chance encounter, because it gave me an opportunity to read one of the most engaging novels I have read in a long time.
Tumblr media
Patchwork won the 2011 Penguin Prize for African Writing and was shortlisted for the 2012 Commonwealth Book Prize
Set in Zambia, Patchwork tells the intergenerational story of three women whose lives are affected by the presence of a wealthy and powerful man. The events of this novel occur in two parts; the first in 1978, and the second in what seems to be the early 2000’s. As the title of the novel implies, the story is indeed a Patchwork – weaving together the stories of Pezo, her mother Totela and Grandma Ponga as they navigate love, loss and betrayal. The story is focalized through Pezo or Pumpkin as she is affectionately referred to. Although she is nine years old in the first part of the novel, I was struck by her self-awareness. She is only a child, yet in some instances she perceives the world the way an adult would.
Pumpkin’s father is Joseph Sakavungo and from the prologue of the novel, it is evident that he is the cause of the tensions that exist in the three women’s relationships with each other. Joseph is a serial womanizer, having been married when he fathered Pumpkin with Totela. The severity of Joseph’s womanizing is revealed as the novel progresses, with subtle referrals to it throughout the story. 1978 is an important year for Pumpkin for various reasons. It is the year her mother’s drinking problem implodes and her father takes her to live with him. It is also the year she experiences a loss that pushes her into silence.
Tumblr media
Ellen Banda-Aaku
The strength of Banda-Aaku’s writing in Patchwork comes from the deafening silences. She is able to highlight the effects of trauma on the various characters through their adoption of silence as a trauma-response. The silence that characterizes these women’s relationship is juxtaposed by Joseph’s mannerisms. Although his behavior has damning effects on these women’s lives, he is a generous man and a responsible father. At first, Joseph’s Achilles Heel only affects the people around him. However, the consequences of his actions eventually implode on him.
Aside from the intricacies of the three women’s relationships, it is interesting to note how Banda-Aaku uses the events that occur in the backdrop of the novel to critique various issues affecting Zambian society. These issues include; rape, women’s reproductive care and the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Patchwork is a brilliant offering from Ellen Banda-Aaku that tells an insightful story of the consequences of bad behavior, and the importance of personal responsibility. She reminds the reader of how impactful and intense human relationships can be, astutely citing that “love and hate: same-same.”

Such a lovely day in Stellenbosch with Minka💜. She was my friend in Nijmegen when we were both exchange students there in 2003. So wonderful to be able to see her again after all of that time! As Minka said, sometimes life gift wraps the past as a small, delightful experience for the present. 🤍

Safety First: How to Choose a Reputable Tour Operator in South Africa and Avoid Tourist Scams
South Africa is a land of breathtaking beauty, captivating wildlife, and vibrant cultures. Whether you dream of experiencing the thrill of a safari in Kruger National Park, exploring the cosmopolitan charm of Cape Town, or indulging in the wine regions of Stellenbosch, a tour operator can help craft the perfect itinerary. However, navigating the world of Tour Operating Companies in South Africa or Top Travel Agencies in South Africa requires a cautious approach. Here's how to ensure a safe and unforgettable vacation:
Tumblr media
The Importance of a Reputable Tour Operator:
Booking with a reputable Tour Operator in South Africa offers several advantages:
Expertise: They possess in-depth knowledge of the region, including hidden gems, cultural nuances, and responsible tourism practices.
Logistics: They streamline your trip by handling transportation, accommodation bookings, activity arrangements, and permits (if necessary).
Safety: Reputable operators prioritize safety protocols, ensuring qualified guides, reliable transportation, and emergency preparedness.
Red Flags to Watch Out For:
Unfortunately, not all Tour Operating Companies in South Africa operate with the same level of integrity. Here are some red flags to watch out for:
Unrealistic Prices: If a tour seems significantly cheaper than others, it might be a sign of hidden costs or compromised quality.
Unlicensed Operators: Always verify the operator's license with the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA).
Unclear Itineraries: A reputable operator will provide a detailed itinerary outlining inclusions, exclusions, and pricing structures.
High-Pressure Sales Tactics: Be wary of operators who pressure you into booking without allowing time for research and comparison.
Unprofessional Communication: Look out for poor grammar, unprofessional email addresses, or hesitation to answer questions directly.Essential Research Tips:
Here's how to ensure you choose a reputable Tour Operator in South Africa:
Read Online Reviews: Look for reviews on independent travel websites, TripAdvisor, and social media platforms.
Check Industry Affiliations: Look for operators affiliated with reputable organizations like SATSA (South African Tourism Services Association) or TBCSA.
Research the Operator's History: Investigate the company's background, experience, and areas of specialization.
Compare Itineraries and Prices: Request detailed itineraries and quotes from several operators to compare inclusions, exclusions, and pricing structures.
Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to ask about qualifications, safety protocols, insurance options, and cancellation policies.
Tumblr media
Booking with Confidence:
Once you've identified a few promising Tour Operating Companies in South Africa, consider the following before booking:
Payment Methods: Reputable operators typically offer secure payment methods like credit card processing through established platforms.
Read the Fine Print: Carefully review the terms and conditions, cancellation policies, and insurance inclusions before signing any contracts.
Trust Your Gut: If something feels off during your communication with a company, it's best to trust your instincts and walk away.  Beyond the Tour Operator:
While choosing a reputable tour operator is crucial, remember a few additional safety tips for your South African adventure:
Travel Insurance: Invest in travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and potential losses.
Accommodation Research: Research your accommodations for security measures and amenities, especially if staying outside major cities.
Be Street Smart: Stay vigilant in crowded areas, avoid carrying large sums of cash, and keep valuables secure.
Planning a Safe and Memorable Journey
By prioritizing safety and conducting thorough research, you can embark on a fantastic South African adventure with peace of mind. Remember, a reputable Tour Operator in South Africa will be your partner in creating an unforgettable vacation.

Entries for the Annual Blaauwklippen Blending Competition are open, this year celebrating 41 years of the art of wine blending.
Open to all aspiring winemakers this competition is there to encourage wine enthusiasts to create a winning blend.
“Blends are a much-loved category of red wine, with so many possibilities and variations in character and style. This competition allows wine lovers to get hands-on experience in blending – a combination of science and art that captures the strengths of each varietal to create a wine that is greater than the sum of its parts,” says Narina Cloete, winemaker at Blaauwklippen.
For this year’s competition, the challenge is to create a serious Bordeaux style blend with components from a very challenging 2023 vintage. Blenders will receive 4 wines (1 x Cabernet franc, 1 x Malbec, 1 x Merlot, 1 x Petit Verdot) and all 4 components must be used in the final blend. A maximum 65 % of each Cultivar may be used and a minimum of 5% of each component must be included in the blend.
Entries are made up in the Blaauwklippen cellar according to each team’s formula and tasted blind by the judging panel which consists of some of the nation’s most astute wine personalities, along with Narina.
In addition to the trophy, the winning club earns recognition on the label of a limited-edition magnum release of their blend bottled and sold by Blaauwklippen.
