Submariner Summer 29
Hola hola, todo bien? Lets do #SubmarinerSummer part 29, Tales to Astonish #95: The POWER Of The Plunderer! Got Banner/Hulk and the High Evolutionary on the cover. Go Go Go HULK! Also, Marvel really loves using "A World He Never Made" as a title or tag line
On the Title page, we catch up with Namor and Dorma still on their way back to Atlantis. And apparently, there's a new underwater city that's popped up! Popped down?
A *surfacer* city (eww)!
Got Thomas and Raymond Marais on script, and Mr. Everett himself still on art, here inked by Colletta
Namor is angry at the unmitigated gall of coming to Atlantean territory and just setting up a city...a colony, if you will. Full of white people. 😒
Dorma tries to be the voice of peace...but Namor knows what those people mean when they say peace.
Namor demands to speak to their leader, but, well, the guards don't actually seem all that interested in talk or peace, actually. But surfacers forever undestimate Namor, so *that* doesn't go well for them.
Can you imagine being that far underwater and mouthing off to the Namor???
When Namor then moves to leave, the surfacer leader finally shows up
The weird sub belongs to the surfacer leader, Dr. Walter Newell (1st appearance; note it!). He tries to tell Namor the guards weren't really hostile (🙄), and acknowledges he set up his city in Namor's domain, telling him he's there to...take his resources for the surface world 😬😬😬
Wait, it gets better. When Namor asks why Atlantis should get robbed, Newell replies: the surfacers will definitely offer trade for the natural resources!
😱 Bro literally trying the blankets and beads bit on Atlantis. 💀
Namor though isn't having it, and leaves, rejoining Lady Dorma, when a new player arrives
Its The Plunderer, a Ka-Zar villain, and true to his name he demands the city surrender and be plundered. Newell tries to intervene in his craft, but it goes terribly wrong, and his city's dome is cracked, the water rushing in. Namor is philosophical, but aloof. Let 'em drown.
But then Plunderer starts attacking escape-craft. This makes Namor angry; it is, after all, his turf Plunderer is war crime-ing in. So he attacks Plunderer's sub, and gets let inside.
Plunderer tries to shoot Namor with his fancy vibra-gun but Namor is too fast for him and makes him pay. However, Plunderer's men are after Dorma, which distracts him long enough for Plunderer to get a shot in
Dorma gets caught in the current of water rushing through the dome and into the city. She's almost crushed, but Newell saves her. Plunderer tosses Namor out of his sub when he realizes he survived the vibro-gun, and he gets to work living up to his name plundering the city
Namor sees that Newell saved Dorma, and takes her back, expressing gratitude but telling the surfacer to let her go and get lost in no uncertain terms. He takes Dorma to the depths, while Newell gets a ship to rescue his people. Then Namor vows to get Plunderer for what he did after taking Dorma back to Atlantis
So ends this issue, a high action story with a real Silver Age sci-fi vibe in the designs, especially with the subs. This was quite the first appearance for Newell, who we haven't seen the last of and was clearly written to be sympathetic, but wow the colonialism runs deep.
Be that as it may NEXT Submariner hunts the Plunderer and on the way swims into his past in Tales to Astonish #96: Somewhere Stands...Skull Island!
