I heard some of you like planes?
A long overdue sketch masterpost of all the planes from the MSI (minus the Wright Flyer replica). Thanks to @solrika for the beautiful fanart of the war planes xe did and for reminding me that I still hadn't posted all of these together!

The Stuka was famed for its ruggedness and survivability. Here, a crew pose by their aircraft shortly after it failed to pull out of a dive over northern France, 1940.

Did Stuka and Spitfire like each other instantly, or was there an adjustment period?
Oh there was absolutely an adjustment period, although it wasn't because they saw each other as enemies or anything. They very much did want to be friends! They just weren't sure how to go about it.
Stuka was and has always been very adamant about not speaking English. He sees his preservation as an acting role, one where he is expected to play the heel, and he does so happily. In his eyes it would break the illusion if he spoke English, and it saves him the trouble of having to learn. He *understands* it perfectly well, so the way he sees it, he's set. He can still talk to the submarine, so he's not lacking for conversation even if one side of it is not in his preferred language. (U-505 speaks exclusively English.)
Of course this presents a problem when the museum gives you a face to play off against and you're both hanging out after work is over any maybe you want to ask if he'd like to get ice cream with you, but you can't! Stuka is nothing if not resourceful, however, and he knows better than any engine that a smile and a little miming goes a long way.
Spitfire's happy to play along as far as it goes, but he's also interested in Stuka as a person, wants to know more about him and what makes him tick. He also wants to plan some more elaborate playfight scenarios, and the specifics are hard to nail down using only body language. Maybe instead of Stuka learning English maybe he, Spitfire, could learn German. That's what a spy would do after all, and he can be sneaky... Kind of!
When Spitfire asked U-505 for help with with that though, all he got was a flat rejection, as was to be expected. U-505 suggested that Stuka would probably be willing to teach him instead. Give that little warplane someone else to bother!
Stuka was, of course, over the moon that the little Allied plane his museum got for him wanted to do this - just for him, ostensibly - and it helped Spitfire feel more at home at the MSI, which is what having a best friend will do for you.

A German Ju 87D of III./St.G17. Staffel is about to take off from the Dnieper border region - Eastern Front, Summer 1942. Note the wheel casings have been removed to avoid the plane flipping over on poor surfaces during landing / take off

Junkers Ju 87A Stuka, unit, location and date unknown. Early model Stukas had these very large wheel coverings, which were removed from the B model onwards and replaced with more streamlined versions. Car ( the pilots?) is possibly a '37 Lancia Aprilla. In the grand tradition of falling in love with planes as though they were beautiful women, it's my pleasure to introduce United Boeing 727! You can see her at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago alongside several other smaller planes in their Transportation Hall. :^)
