subdomain vs subdirectory
Navigating the intricate world of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can sometimes feel like playing a game of “tech term bingo.” You encounter terms like metadata, keywords, backlinks, and an endless list of similar-sounding words that are enough to make any marketer’s head spin. Among all these, the internal technical architecture of your website: subdomains and subdirectories, often emerges as a particularly challenging area to grasp, especially when contemplating on which among them is better for SEO.

im also goingto be forcing one of my siblings to learn how to run a python script from the command line as a result of this but it WILL solve the issue so i think its fine
somebody could have the least pressing problem on planet earth but if i realize it could be solved with a relatively simple python script and i would drop everything to work on one. im desperate for any practical use because i cant come up with any myself

I was looking for something the other day through the image files of stuff I've drawn for Tumblr over the years and got the impression that there was a steep decline in volume last year or maybe the last few years. But wait, the image files all have timestamps for filenames. I'm going to go through and see how may image files there are per year, and I'm taking you with me.
Now, not all the image filenames are timestamps. Stuff that's reprinted from the main Hero of Three Faces site gets a different filename format (and is in an altogether different subdirectory anyway); some stuff like the Lord of the Rings project also has its own filename format. And not all of the timestamp files are drawings; photo manipluations (the things tagged #i made this on both blogs) get timestamp filenames, but then those belong in this count really. Erring in the other direction, a few years in I started breaking up single strips that are more than two panels into more'n one file, because otherwise Tumblr image compression or whatever makes them fuzzy looking. So these aren't precise counts, we're just hunting trends.
2012 - 6
2013 - 63
2014 - 34
2015 - 51
2016 - 115
2017 - 129
2018 - 176
2019 - 273
2020 - 290
2021 - 333
2022 - 813
2023 - 884
2024 - 538
Well okay, last year was only a little over half each of the previous two years. But still almost twice the two years before that each.
And for all three of the most recent three years, there come out to much better'n one per day. Wow. Add this to my production at AKOTAS/Three Faces/Creative Process and the website I had before that, and I think I can after all still say in good faith, after giving up holding myself to it in 2016, that I've drawn an average of a cartoon a day since I started drawing dailies on notebook paper in 1976.
Those of you who followed me here because you liked the cartoons on my proper websites - enjoy!

i had a student last year ask me what the difference was between a file and a folder. in a programming class. i had to teach git to these people. and how to make a simple html website. it took a long time to get to the term "subdirectory." i don't blame them, just. god.

I am going to make a directory for this blog in order to make the Lore or whatever easier to navigate. This will become the new pinned post of the blog as well.
Keeping this in mind, I would like everyone's feedback on how each post should be organized. There are four options:
Chronological, which is just each post listed in the order they were posted originally. I would include the date they were posted as well.
Categorically, which is each post listed in categories that denote their information. For example, the Live2D posts and ingame screenshots would go under a "Gallery" category in the directory.
Both, which would separate the posts into categories and list their respective upload dates simultaneously
Both but separately, which would mean two directories of both kinds so people can look at whichever they prefer (each subdirectory would be linked in the pinned directory).
Please pick based off which would be the most convenient to you; I don't care how much extra effort I have to put into making these. I like organizing stuff!! Thank you.

the best art tool youve ever used is a command-line tool that was on someones .com.uk website 5 subdirectories deep that disappeared in 2020 because its domain was bought by a squatter and you can only get from the wayback machine

The jumpship jumps again, prompting another wave of vomit from Harlo.
Arvidia floats gently above her bunk, scrolling through the data packet from the forward reconnaissance units in the Inner Sphere. Particularly of interest to Arvidia is the Intel from the rimward periphery. A veritable fantasy story of high adventure and epic conquest. Barbarian princess and noble warriors, all starring the cast of the Clan Homeworlds’ second favorite prime-time television show, imparting the important lessons of honor and good behavior on impressionable crechekin.
While not particularly relevant to the Ghost Bear invasion corridor, it provides great insights into spheroid ways of war. It also provides good reading material for the several months of sitting around in the crew berths of the dropship. At least the others are to excited to bully her, though the should not last more than a month and they would doubtlessly not see any action in the Periphery securing action.
Finishing up and closing a report by Corax McKenna on common aerospace assets in the Aurigan Reach, Arvidia checks her inbox on the fleet HPG uplink. Nothing, which makes sense as most bandwidth is likely reserved for command communications, but still disappointing.
Scrolling through the Intel folder she had ‘procured’ from a Watch database, Arvidia finds something intriguing.
The thing in question is a link to a password protected server on the REVIVAL fleet Chatterweb node. Cracking the password provides entertainment to Arvidia for a good five hours, but is fairly trivial.
The link leads to a subdirectory filled with [TOP SECRET] documents, apparently guidelines and training docs for Watch agents. Well, it is better reading than sitting around and twiddling her thumbs.
She opens the first document.

[Fairy's Biological Observation Log] A Day in Section 6
— Subdirectory created, labeling in progress —
To ensure the system data remains effective and up-to-date, I monitor every corner of New Eridu daily to gather all kinds of new information.
At the same time, to avoid any data loss or errors in judgment, I've backed up these records in this database.
※Note: These documents contain private biological information protected under current laws. At present, only Fairy has access to this directory.
— December 5 observation log uploaded —
— Title —
A No-Field-Mission, Hoshimi-Miyabi-Is-Not-Missing, Harumasa-Is-Not-on-Leave, and Soukaku-Did-Not-Oversleep Day in Section 6
[Note: The GIFs were too big to be posted to Tumblr. Please view them at the official Hoyolab post.]

Oh I should have gone to bed directly instead of try to run one more step of my analysis.
I accidentally ran 'rm [file name] *' instead of just 'rm [file name]'.
I just accidentally removed every damn file that wasn't a directory in this subdirectory.
OH I FUCKED UP SO BAD.

Capturing the ambience of Mr. & Mrs. Potato Head Go On Vacation
Tumblr media
Running the game
I had a lot of trouble with this. I tried a Windows 95 and Windows XP virtual machine. Often the game's installer would fail, or it would crash at runtime due to a scripting error. I finally got it to run via a Windows 95 VM inside PCem.
Extracting sounds
Certain sound effect and voice files are located inside the relevant subdirectories of potato\data\audio. You can check the install directory if you performed a full install, or simply check for the files on-disk.
Remaining assets can be extracted from relevant DXR files using a tool like Director Cast Ripper.
Tumblr media
Capturing environments
The majority of the game's assets are contained inside its DXR Macromedia Shockwave files. You can convert these to DIR with a decompiler. From there, you can read the DIR files inside Director. Open the desired DIR file, open the Stage window, and click play.
Exporting to AVI via Director
I couldn't get this working for Potato since it seems to use frames in a non-linear way. For example, frame 11 on the Australia level seems to be used for the idle state. I tried editing the per-level scripts to change how looping works, but gave up.
Tumblr media
Removing UI
To remove these graphics we can simply edit or remove the relevant sprites via Director.
Capturing Spain
The scripting to control this level's scenery is amazingly complex. There are about 20 unique state values for blending between two background bitmaps to simulate various times of day. At certain points, the level's background sounds switch over to go along with this.
