@leebrontide Posting this up on main bc its pretty relevant to a main WIP, and also a long explanation.
An OCT stands for an Original Character Tournament! It's a story telling contest, essentially, where you put in ur lil OC in the ring to do battle with everyone else's OC's.
Essentially, you write or draw (a lot of OCTs are primarily comic based) your character having a fight with your assigned opponent and you write your character winning. Your opponent will also write a fight between your two characters, but their character ends up winning.
Then the judges will swoop in and award the win- and canonicity to one of the competitors, and the winner advances in the ranks until they win the whole game!
It's a huge collaboration, essentially, you make friends with your fellow competitors, put other character cameos into your rounds, ask a billion questions about what's in character for your opponent etc etc.
It was a really popular format on Deviant art like 10-15 years ago. There were some really well known and influential OCTs that still get referenced today, like Endzone or Law of Talos. The TV tropes page for OCTS in general is pretty informative too.
Obviously OCTS are still happening today, though mostly you find them on twitter and discord.
I joined The Summer Leagues OCT a few months ago and it really kicked me back into writing! I could probably credit it for inspiring me to pick up old projects and start Project Cannibalism.
I'm currently still waiting for the results of round 1 but win or lose, I'm going to finish the story I started, which you can now read on AO3, because for some reason I didn't just immediately post it there in the first place lmfao.

So atm my chronology looks something like (all question marks subject to change):
The ‘Gloria Scott’ - Summer 1875 [1] (Framing: Winter 1882-3?)
The Musgrave Ritual - 1879 (Framing: Winter 1882-3?)
A Study In Scarlet - Jan-Mar 1881
The Resident Patient - Oct 1881
The Valley Of Fear - 1882?
The Speckled Band - Apr 1883
The Beryl Coronet - Feb 1884-5?
The Copper Beeches - Early Spring (Mar?) 1884?
The Yellow Face - 1883-5?
The Hound Of The Baskervilles - 1885?
The Greek Interpreter - 1884-6?
The Reigate Squires - Apr 1887
The Sign of Four - Jul 1887 [2]
The Cardboard Box - Aug 1887
The Noble Bachelor - Autumn 1887
A Scandal In Bohemia - Mar 1888
The Stockbroker’s Clerk - Jun 1888
The Naval Treaty - Jul 1888
[The Second Stain - Jul 1888**]
The Crooked Man - Summer (Aug?) 1888
The Five Orange Pips - Sep 1888 [3]
The Boscombe Valley Mystery - Spring 1889?
The Man With The Twisted Lip - Jun 1889
The Engineer’s Thumb - Summer (Jul?) 1889
The Dying Detective - Nov 1889
A Case Of Identity - Sep 1890
The Red Headed League - Oct 1890
The Blue Carbuncle - Dec 1890
Notes:
1: The dates given in ‘Gloria Scott’ add up to 1885, which would be 4 years after ASIS.
2: TSOF is stated to take place in July (or possibly September?) 1888, but this contradicts SCAN and FIVE
3: FIVE is stated to take place in September 1887, but Watson can’t possibly be staying with Holmes while his wife is away if he hasn’t even met her yet.
**: I’ve decided to headcanon that the events of SECO as published are heavily, if not entirely fictionalised, given that they don’t line up with the references made in NAVA. This is when the real events referenced there take place.

“Multiple league sources have since indicated to The Athletic that Demko won’t be ready for training camp and preseason games. The club is hopeful that its Vezina Trophy finalist will be available to play on opening night — Oct. 9 against the Calgary Flames — but even that seems to be in question at this late stage of the summer.
There’s a bit of a cone of silence around exactly what’s occurring here. To this point, no one close to the situation will confirm whether or not Demko underwent a surgical procedure this summer.”

Universities across the U.S. are implementing stricter administrative policies regarding on-campus protests as students return from summer break and following the chaos from last semester's protests sparked by Palestinian-affiliated Hamas's Oct. 7, 2023, terror attack on Israel that resulted in Israel's war in Gaza.
Anti-Israel protests occurred Monday on at least one college campus, George Washington University, in Washington, D.C. And the expectation is that protests will resume at other campuses as students return.
In July, the Young Democratic Socialists of America passed a resolution asking students to hold a national strike over the Israeli-Hamas war.
Columbia University’s Office of the President issued a statement last month that it will have a “mediation” program to facilitate constructive dialogue. The University Senate’s Committee on the Rules and University Conduct is reviewing the rules governing student protests, according to the statement, but no specifics were offered.
“We are addressing concerns we have heard from the community over the time required for investigations and are strengthening our processes. The entire community should be able to easily understand what behavior we expect from each other and what will happen if rules are violated,” the statement said.
Minouche Shafik, who was the Ivy League school's president at the time of the protests, and was criticized for her response, resigned earlier this month.

Testing something out but also showcasing my comic strips.
I do OCT comics most of the time so if you're interested you can check the first one at:
[Summer Leagues S1 Audition]
or the second one at:
[Kilos Point Audition]
Starting from "Chapter 1" Of course. Kilos Point is still ongoing.
EDIT: yeah, as I suspected, the image quality suffered and you probably need to open it in a new tab.

One to Five Tag!
Thanks @drchenquill for the tag!
rules: follow the prompts, change one if you'd like, and tell the lovely world of writeblr a little something about your wip! answers to the prompts can be in the form of quotes or anything you'd like!
From the Summer Leagues OCT
One Word To Describe Your WIP - Trauma (look i know drchenquill said this too but it basically works for everything I write too.
Two Lines That Are Your Favourite -
“It will not be fine for you,” Irra whispers. “My harbinger. My avatar. They will never forgive you for this.”
Half of Ravi wants to drop into a dead sleep in a ditch at the
side of the street and the other half is so wired that they’re pretty sure they can see new colors.
Three Times You've Wanted To Laugh While Writing -
The bit where Nalagrom's flossing to cast a spell, and Ravi wants the ground to swallow them up.
“Fuck you,” Nalagrom says. “I’m a man.” He downs the entire bottle, then freezes into place. An undignified scream whistles out of his clenched teeth as his muscles and bones wrench themselves
back into shape.
Okay basically almost every scene I've written with Nalagrom in it. He's basically made for comic relief.
Four Feelings From Your Characters -
This isn’t just a bar, it’s an alchemist’s workshop. It’s the most at-home they’ve felt since they arrived at the Crossroads.
The others are talking about something but Ravi can’t follow the conversation, panicking inwardly, their face frozen in place as they try and figure out what the fuck to do.
Oh. There’s the fear. If they die here, they’re going to fucking kill
Nalagrom.
It's painful, unsticking the bandages from dried pus, but not less painful than their memories so Ravi savagely rips it off.
Five Tropes Featured - Asshole with a Heart of Gold- Tournament Arc- Sharing a Body- Body Horror- Don't You Dare Pity Me!
Tagging: @orions-quill, @leebrontide, @the-golden-comet, @scbwriter no pressure!
