Common Dreams
July 23, 2024
"Harris grasps the urgency and scale of the challenge," an expert said. "She'll advance the climate progress we've made at home and internationally."
Four environmental groups on Monday evening endorsed the presidential run of U.S. vice president and presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, whom many campaigners view as slightly stronger on climate issues than President Joe Biden.
The League of Conservation Voters Action Fund, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) Action Fund, the Sierra Club, and Clean Energy for America Action issued a statement of support for Harris and pledged to mobilize millions of their supporters behind her.
“Kamala Harris is a courageous advocate for the people and the planet," said Ben Jealous, Sierra Club's executive director.
"She has worked for decades to combat the climate crisis and protect our health and future," he added.
Manish Bapna, president of NRDC Action Fund, agreed that the vice president was well-equipped to step into the top role and deal with the climate crisis.
"Harris grasps the urgency and scale of the challenge," Bapna said. "She'll advance the climate progress we've made at home and internationally. She'll raise climate ambition to make sure we confront the climate crisis in a way that makes the country more inclusive, more economically competitive, and more energy secure."
Tumblr media
The joint statement followed a wave of endorsements from leading Democrats in the day and a half after Biden dropped out of the race and backed Harris. Evergreen Action, a climate advocacy group, also endorsed Harris.
The Sunrise Movement thanked Biden for stepping aside, after pushing him to do so. The group hasn't endorsed Harris but has, on social media, touted Harris' earlier climate proposals and initiatives, encouraging her to be as bold as she was on the issue in 2019 while running for president. That year, as a senator from California, she co-sponsored a Green New Deal bill pushed by Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), saying that climate change posed an "existential threat to our nation."
As a presidential candidate, Harris ran to the left of Biden on climate issues, calling for $10 trillion in climate investment, a carbon tax, and a ban on fracking and on new oil leases on federal lands. She even said that she would support eliminating the Senate filibuster rule in order to pass a Green New Deal.
And during a 2019 town hall on climate, Harris identified an underlying climate problem more squarely than many corporate Democrats are willing to do.
"On this issue, guys, as far as I'm concerned, it's not a question of debating the science," Harris said at the time. "It's a question of taking on powerful interests, taking on the polluters, understanding that they have a profit motive to pollute."
Yet that Harris candidacy, wedged awkwardly between corporate Democrats such as Biden and progressives such as Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), flopped and she dropped out of the race in December 2019.
As vice president, Harris cast the tie-breaking vote for the Inflation Reduction Act, which Biden, in his momentous letter on Sunday, called "the most significant climate legislation in the history of the world." She also represented the U.S. at the COP28 climate change summit in Dubai last year, speaking in strong terms about the need for action.
"The urgency of this moment is clear," she said in Dubai. "The clock is no longer just ticking, it is banging. And we must make up for lost time."
"Around the world, there are those who seek to slow or stop our progress, leaders who deny climate science, delay climate action, and spread misinformation," she added. "In the face of their resistance and in the context of this moment, we must do more."
Longtime Harris observers in California commend her environmental record there. As district attorney of San Francisco, she established one of the nation's first environmental justice departments. She later pushed environmental measures as state attorney general and U.S. senator representing California: electrifying school buses, replacing lead water pipes, and strengthening vehicle emissions standards, for example.
As attorney general, she sued oil companies including Chevron, BP, and ConocoPhillips over pollution issues and took legal action against the Obama administration over fracking. Later, in the town hall event, she she said was proud to be a "fighter" who "took on the Big Oil companies—great, powerful interests."
Bloomberg reported Sunday that Harris is "seen as [a] tougher oil industry opponent than Biden."
Though Harris no longer calls for a Green New Deal and has moderated her rhetoric as part of the Biden administration, she still offers a stark contrast to Republican nominee Donald Trump, whose administration rolled back over 100 climate policies from 2017 to 2021. The new Republican platform doesn't mention climate change and vows to "drill, baby, drill"—in all caps.

Day 27 - Challenge Day
This last challenge of Total Drama Sims is the most dangerous, most intense of all. However, it just might have the simplest goal.
Today, contestants will be racing to the summit of Mt. Komorebi, and the first person who does so will win invincibility into the finale.
That's right! I'm sending 3 teenagers to go climb an entire mountain! Everyone will be equipped with climbing gear and a can of soup, but otherwise everything else will be on them!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lilium and Dahlia are off to a strong start, but Lilium struggles and falls off a few times (thankfully she was only a few feet off the ground). Dahlia, miraculously, scaled the rock wall on her first try!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The group continued onward, but the rough and tumble of making it to base camp wore out our travelers. They stopped to rest for a little bit. Dahlia chose the nearby bush as her bed...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When weather conditions improve, Lilium is the first to awaken and takes that as her chance to take the lead! The others straddle behind, determined to summit the mountain first.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the end, Lilium manages to maintain her lead and reaches the summit just in time to watch the sun set. The others join her for this spectacular end to the final challenge.
LILIUM WINS!
Tumblr media
Today's Confessional: Dahlia Grove
"Did I... really just climb an entire mountain? I never thought I could do something like that, but I did... I'm not even disappointed I didn't get invincibility; I'm just wondering how I'm still alive..."

“Despite the forecast — live like it's SPRING.”
As temperatures begin to warm and the last of the winter slush melts away, the city of Providence Peak is beginning to flurry with the activities of spring instead. Residence are cleaning up their homes, the city officials are cleaning up parks, and stores are fixing up their inventory to bring each and every person something new and exciting as Providence enters the Spring season at last! Well, two brand new personalized kayaks, complete with paddles and life vests, of course! Tuesday (April 9th) — In support of Providence Peak Memorial's new research initiative, find yourself a good seat at the charity baseball game happening at the local baseball field in Claret Park or, if you're feeling charitable, join in on a team and swing some bats around for the sake of raising money for several research study opportunities that are pushing toward a brighter future in the healthcare industry. Concessions will be selling popcorn, hot dogs, and soda pops with all proceeds going toward the hospital's research program. Wednesday (April 10th) —  Find your way to Mayor Harris’ stand in the midst of the festival for a spring raffle. Poll: Which TEAM of female Resident Evil characters would scale a mountain the fastest?
Tumblr media
Now that everyone is battered and bruised... it's to climb a mountain!
A collective groan fills the air as The Merchant begins to pass out mountaineering equipment (provided that a person is willing to pay, of course). Accepting their fate, three team leaders (Rebecca, Helena, and Sherry) are chosen at random and are in turn put in charge of three random people.
All four in each team will be tethered together by a rope and everyone must make it to the summit. No leaving weakest links behind.
And, of course, the gang can't help themselves and decide to make this a race... even if it makes things even more dangerous.
And please welcome Cindy who is filling in for Hunnigan at a terrible time.
Rebecca's Team: Rebecca, Cindy, Sheva, Jill!

Humanity is small.
So small that the word itself is too big and unfit for task.
All the greatest works of humanity are constrained. Kept Captive, circling one star. Even as the centuries moved on and people walked on the moon, and robots went beyond all creations of humanity could be parcelled away and destroyed by a change in those innumerable objects that float within the void of space.
If someone back on Earth was watching with advanced machinery trained to the right frequency they might see an irregular spark. Across the shadowed surface of Saturn, amongst its rings a single light blinked on and off.
But nobody was watching, and the anomaly passed through the rings and coasted in the deep dark of space toward Jupiter. Its path, had it then been observed could have been claimed to going toward the sun. Instead, humanity first laid their eyes on it as it approached Mars. It was proof. We were not alone.
For as our telescopes first saw it, we could not believe our eyes. A jet-black ship, fastened on either side with fins, and, to the bow a large, circular, diaphanous mesh that muted a deep, golden yellow. It seemed to almost be alive, swimming through the endless expanse that was space.
As it passed Mars, it adjusted course, heading toward the Earth. Panic ensued. But as these things do the pace of the creature or vessel meant that it passed from popular consciousness until it could be seen every night with the naked eye. And once it arrived it came to rest between the Earth and Moon, completely obscuring most of the night sky above the Southern Hemisphere.
Four days passed. First governments tried to contact it. Especially as so many satellites disappeared around it. Some would reappear, but others would not return. Then normal people set up radios and tried to call the sip. To which they received only static and broken equipment in return.
On the fifth day figures, with billowing black wings descended to the summit of Mount Mikeno. Armies, and journalists raced to the mountain. All wanting to be early, but not first.
In their fashion, the Americans and the Chinese approached first. The figures spoke to them in a language they did not understand. Only when Swahili speakers made the summit did things become clear.
“We see light where there is meant to be none. Towering monuments that pierce the sky.”
The figures all wore black, membranous robes that shifted as they spoke.
“Most distressingly you contravene the laws of the Council. But we believe that the case must be made that your Star is the guilty party.”
There was murmuring amongst the human dignitaries at these more than two-metre-tall figures. Was humanity going top be punished? And what did that mean? Especially on a planet where so many lives can be forfeit by legal means.
“Fear not. You shall be allowed your existence.” One of the figures stepped forward.
Their cloak pulled aside, revealing the cloak as wings and golden, shining armour beneath. It produced a scroll that, as it opened scattered a silver mist about. And wherever it touched the ground strange plants began to grow.
“You have made more progress than expected and will be allowed to keep it. But the laws must be upheld, and your Star is not willing, so an edict is called for.” And the creature spoke, a language that burned the ears and closed the eyes of all assembled. It went on for an hour, setting boundaries on human expansion, and when done, each was given a copy of the edict. The script crawled and writhed, forming snippets of words. And then, with well wishes the creatures, Curators as the scrolls made clear, lifted to the night sky as they reboarded the enormous ship and headed toward the Sun.
In the following months a change was detected. The Sun pulsed a deeper yellow and emitted less radiation. The plants on the summit reached down the mountain and to the sky. And deep within Mount Mikeno a heartbeat started sounding.

Summit to Slope: The Thrill and Technique of Snow Skiing
Snow skiing is a dynamic and exhilarating winter sport that combines breathtaking environments with intense physical challenge. This article delves into the multifaceted world of skiing, exploring everything from the basic techniques for beginners to the advanced maneuvers for seasoned skiers, all set against the majestic backdrop of snowy peaks.
Carving the Basics: Skiing Fundamentals
For those new to the sport, understanding the basics of skiing is crucial. Skiing involves a set of skills that control speed, navigate slopes, and ensure safety. Beginners must master the fundamental stances and movements, such as the pizza (or snowplow) for slowing down and the parallel ski position for speed. Proper instruction from a certified ski instructor can accelerate the learning process, emphasizing the importance of posture, balance, and effective turning techniques.
Gear Up: Essential Ski Equipment
Choosing the right equipment is vital to a successful skiing experience. Skis, poles, bindings, ski boots, and protective gear like helmets and goggles must be tailored to an individual’s size, skill level, and skiing style. For instance, longer skis offer stability at high speeds and are preferable for racing, while shorter skis provide better control and are ideal for tricks and freestyle moves. Additionally, ensuring that all equipment is well-maintained and adequately fitted can significantly impact performance and safety.
Conquering the Mountain: Advanced Ski Techniques
As skiers progress, they explore more complex techniques, such as carving, moguls, and off-piste (backcountry) skiing. Carving involves making clean turns by tilting the skis so that they slice into the snow, which requires robust edge control and balance. Skiing moguls—bumps formed on the slopes from repeated turns—demand quick feet, strong legs, and the ability to absorb impacts. Off-piste skiing offers an adventurous escape from groomed trails but requires advanced navigational skills and awareness of avalanche risks.
The Mental Edge: Psychology of Skiing
Skiing is not only physically demanding but also mentally challenging. Whether navigating a steep, icy black diamond or attempting their first downhill run, skiers must maintain focus, manage fear, and exhibit resilience. Techniques such as visualization, breathing exercises, and goal setting can help skiers overcome challenges and improve their performance by maintaining mental clarity and calmness under pressure.
Ski Safety: Preventing Injuries on the Slopes
Safety is paramount in skiing, as the sport carries risks ranging from minor falls to severe injuries or even avalanches. Knowledge of proper technique and adherence to ski resort rules can prevent most accidents. Skiers should also be educated on the use of safety equipment such as helmets, padded clothing, and avalanche transceivers when skiing in remote areas. Additionally, understanding the signs of fatigue and knowing when to take a break is crucial for avoiding injuries.
Embracing the Ski Culture: Community and Lifestyle
Skiing is more than a sport; it's a lifestyle embraced by a community of passionate individuals. Ski resorts often foster a vibrant culture that includes après-ski activities such as dining, music, and socializing, further enhancing the skiing experience. Additionally, annual ski festivals and competitions bring together skiers from around the world to celebrate their love for the sport and compete in various disciplines.
Skiing for All: Adaptive Ski Programs
Adaptive skiing programs have made the slopes accessible to individuals with disabilities. These programs use specialized equipment, such as sit-skis and adaptive ski poles, and trained instructors to provide lessons for skiers of all abilities, emphasizing that the thrill of skiing is for everyone.
The Future of Skiing: Environmental Considerations and Innovation
As skiing continues to grow in popularity, its impact on the environment remains a concern. Sustainable practices such as the use of renewable energy in ski resorts, conservation initiatives, and eco-friendly infrastructure are becoming increasingly important. Moreover, technological advancements in equipment and safety continue to revolutionize the skiing experience, making it safer and more enjoyable for everyone.
"Summit to Slope" captures the essence of snow skiing, highlighting the sport’s thrilling nature and the skill it demands. Whether a novice on the bunny hills or a veteran carving through backcountry powder, skiing offers a unique blend of adventure, physical challenge, and community spirit, making every run an exhilarating experience.

Explore the factors that make Rolex watches a sought-after investment, including their history, quality, and market performance, and a full list of the different models value. Whether you're a seasoned collector or a novice investor, uncover the reasons why Rolex remains the epitome of horological investment excellence. Rolex watches were supplied to the first successful Everest expedition; have been to the bottom of the deepest ocean chasm known to man, up in the stratosphere at speeds much greater than sound, in the Arctic, the jungle and the desert. No other watch has such a record. Wherever men explore and experiment, their success, even their lives, will depend on their equipment. It is hardly surprising that they so often choose Rolex watches. The Story Of Rolex (1964) The thing I like about Rolex is that they don't compromise. If you're going to do something, you might as well be the best at it. That's why I've worn a Rolex for over two decades. Roger Penske Humanity's days are numbered, Chinese replica Rolex time. Carl William Brown Rolex accuracy is all one could desire and it has run continuously without winding ever since I put it on some nine months ago. I count my Rolex watch amongst my most treasured possessions. Sir Edmund Hillary My wife Joanne gave me my Rolex Daytona when I started racing back in 1972. Rolex Daytona Cosmograph The egalitarian luxury policy for the Chinese consists in trying to give all citizens of the world the opportunity to buy a nice fake Rolex. Carl William Brown Rolex watches behaved flawlessly under any and all the worst conditions imaginable, not only this time but also on previous expeditions to Mount Everest, of which I happened to have also been a member. Tenzing Norgay He could not just wear a watch. It had to be a Rolex. Ian Fleming It is certainly true that Rolex watches are highly desired for several reasons. As a matter of fact Rolex has a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and high-quality materials. Each watch is meticulously assembled with precision and undergoes rigorous testing to ensure accuracy and durability. The brand's commitment to excellence has established it as a symbol of luxury and prestige. Rolex also has a long and storied history dating back to 1905. Over the years, the brand has become synonymous with success, innovation, and adventure. From being the first watch to reach the summit of Mount Everest to its association with iconic figures and events, Rolex has built a legacy that captivates enthusiasts and collectors alike. Then Rolex watches are known for their timeless and iconic design. Many of their models, such as the Submariner, Daytona, and Datejust, have achieved iconic status and remain highly sought after by collectors. The brand's designs are characterized by their simplicity, elegance, and functionality, making them suitable for both casual and formal occasions. What's more Rolex watches often retain their value or even appreciate over time. This is due to their reputation, craftsmanship, and limited availability. As a result, owning a Rolex is not only a symbol of status and luxury but also a wise investment. This is due to the fact that Rolex maintains strict control over its production and distribution, resulting in limited availability of its watches. This exclusivity adds to their desirability, as owning a Rolex is seen as a mark of distinction and exclusivity. Overall, Rolex watches represent a blend of craftsmanship, heritage, design, and exclusivity that appeals to a wide range of people, from watch enthusiasts and collectors to those who simply appreciate fine craftsmanship and luxury. In fact Rolex invests heavily in marketing and branding efforts that reinforce its image as a luxury brand. The brand's endorsements, sponsorships, and advertising campaigns help to maintain its allure and desirability among consumers.
Tumblr media
Rolex GMT Master Rolex's success can indeed be attributed to a combination of factors, and its promotional strategies have played a significant role. Rolex has carefully crafted its image as a luxury brand through various means, including original and expensive advertising campaigns. These campaigns often emphasize the exclusivity, precision, and timeless elegance associated with Rolex watches. By investing in high-quality advertising, Rolex has effectively positioned itself as a status symbol and a mark of prestige. Its campaigns often feature celebrities, athletes, and adventurers, further enhancing its appeal to consumers who aspire to the lifestyle and values associated with these figures. Moreover, Rolex has been strategic in its sponsorship and partnerships, aligning itself with prestigious events such as sports competitions, cultural events, and philanthropic initiatives. These sponsorships not only increase brand visibility but also reinforce Rolex's image as a symbol of achievement and excellence. Overall, while Rolex's success cannot be attributed solely to its promotional efforts, these campaigns have undoubtedly contributed to the brand's iconic status and enduring appeal among luxury consumers. As far as investments are concerned we can say for sure that Yes, it's true that buying a Rolex can be considered a form of investment, although it's important to approach it with some nuance. Rolex watches often retain their value well over time, and in some cases, they can even appreciate in value. This is particularly true for certain models that are in high demand or have historical significance. Therefore, purchasing a Rolex can potentially yield a return on investment if you decide to sell it in the future. As we said before Rolex maintains a strict control over its production and distribution, and this policy results in a limited availability of certain models. This scarcity contributes to their desirability and can drive up prices in the secondary market, making them attractive investments for collectors. That's why many Rolex models have demonstrated a track record of holding or increasing in value over time. However, it's important to note that past performance is not indicative of future results, and the value of a Rolex watch can fluctuate based on various factors such as market trends, condition, and demand. The condition of the watch, its rarity, and any accompanying documentation (such as box and papers) can significantly impact its value as an investment. Well-maintained, limited edition, or vintage Rolex watches tend to command higher prices in the resale market. While Rolex watches can be a sound investment for some individuals, it's essential to approach the purchase with a long-term perspective. Investing in a Rolex solely for the purpose of financial gain may not always yield the desired results, as market conditions can be unpredictable. In summary, while buying a Rolex can potentially be a form of investment due to factors like resale value and rarity, it's crucial to consider other factors such as personal enjoyment, appreciation for craftsmanship, and the inherent risks associated with investing in luxury goods. So, what's the real value of your Rolex? We can suggest you this website Edelmetaalrichard where you can find a complete list of the different models and the indicative price you can sell them. If you'd like to sell, or buy a second hand Rolex watch, a number of factors determine the final price. It's possibly already obvious, but you have to consider the watch condition carries a lot of weight during its taxation. Malfunctions or damage decreases its worth. For instance, there might be mechanical failures, parts of the case missing, a broken glass, water damage, scratches, a worn-out metal watchband, the original clasp of a leather band missing and so on.

Rolex Datejust When it comes to metal watchbands, if they were ever shortened, you should have the removed links. Accessories like the brand's original box and/or pouch are also assets. Of the utmost importance are certificates with the serial number and date of purchase. If you bring also a purchase invoice, it is still the better. While near the shops, be sure to stop in at participating shops for a small spring freebie! When you’re finished, return the voting sheet to the booth near Town Hall and spend the rest of your day meandering through the festival vendors in the square.(any location on the locations page is fair game, please contact muns regarding character-owned businesses)
