Explaining Silver the Hedgehog's Eyes

Silver's eyes are another nuanced and sometimes confusing aspect of his character. So in this post I'll go over the nuances and meaning of their design. There are three key details to understand about Silver's eyes.

Part One: First, we have the shape. Silver's eyes have an angular shape with pointed upper corners to them.

I liken this shape to the upper wings of a butterfly.

This can be easy to miss due to how his 3D models are rendered and how they line up with his quills but always becomes more noticeable whenever Silver squints or closes his eyes. Just like Shadow and Jet's eyes they don't always end in a sharp point but they do always end in a somewhat pointed upper corner for the butterfly wing shape.

This is what's called Tsurime(meaning upturned eyes), which in character design represents aggressiveness, strong will, danger and/or general seriousness in a character in contrast to tareme(meaning downturned eyes) or round eyes which generally represents softness.

I will refer to Tsurime Eyes as Danger Eyes or Blade Eyes and Tareme Eyes as Soft Eyes.

If you've ever seen Yu-Gi-Oh!, this is the main visual difference between Yugi and Yami Yugi. It is also the main difference between Tails' bullies from Sonic Origins.

These eye types can express more than just seriousness or softness. Rouge has round eyes yet is very mature and can be even more serious than Knuckles(who has Danger Eyes) while someone like Fang the Hunter has sharp Danger Eyes yet is a very comedic villain.

All of Sonic's main rivals(Metal Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, Blaze, Jet, Silver and Surge) have Danger Eyes while Sonic himself normally has round Soft Eyes to show his carefree nature but also gains sharp Danger Eyes when he transforms into Super Sonic or the Werehog to show that he's in a more aggressive and serious state.

Silver's 3D character models have usually had eyes that appear more round compared to his 2D art but his newest character model has the sharpest eyes yet and is the most like his 2D art.

Part Two: Next, we have the black patterns(officially called black patterns in Sonic Speed Drawing) around Silver's eyes. The part that is easy to miss here is that the patterns run all the way around his eyes and under his front quills, similar to Blaze's eyeliner.

This detail can be easy to miss because the patterns do stop at the sides of his eyes on his in game 06 model(but not the pre-rendered cutscene model) and later media rarely show Silver at an angle where you can see them.

Part Three: Lastly, we have how they intersect with his leaf hair. Silver actually has bangs that cover the top parts of his eyes and perfectly line up with the upper corners which we can see by comparing the concept art of Silver to Super Silver where his quills rise up and reveal a bit more of his eyes.

This can be a source of confusion itself because the quills cover/perfectly line up with the upper corners of his eyes and leave what appears to be the round sides, making them appear completely round if you don't look closely.

In Summary: Silver has butterfly wing shaped eyes, black patterns around them and his front quills are bangs that partially cover them. Know these three details and you can always draw Silver's eyes right!

I know I always talk about how tragic Albus is as a character but I need to mention how he's also such a fucking goof. Like he thinks he's so smart with that Cedric plan and majority of the time he's acted out as all giggly and laughing whenever he's explaining something about it. It's just nice to see him acting like his age and being a little shit in tamer ways. This goes for Scorpius as well who isn't so much as "perfect guy who does no wrong and is such a sweetheart" than he is "perfect guy who has no real social skills and is too self aware of himself while also being a sweetheart but in an obnoxious way which creates good comedic relief."

Sega has infamously, for over a decade, been trying to push Shadow into the role of Sonic's shitty mean competitive "maybe he's evil, maybe he's not" edgy rival who sucks at having friends and needs his shit dismantled every other wednesday for the greater good, when really his character has so so much other cool stuff going on and he works much better as an aloof-but-definitely-heroic foil character with his own gang of buddies and his own creepy little way of doing things

HOWEVER the idw comics have served up the best possible replacement for what they were trying to do with Shadow, a character who ACTUALLY FITS the above description like a glove and wears it much better ,,

There's definitely been more Sonic stuff in recent years that's shown him from an outside perspective, and consistently the conclusion seems to be "hey. this guy's kind of an asshole"

Talking more about the idw sonic comics

idw comics are getting more popular over the years, months, days. and I mean, great for the creators. but lets be clear that popularity doesnt mean exactly that something is canon. like a responded to someone in the last post (And i dont know WHY I CANT SEE MY REPLYS WHY TUMBRL), the divine comedic of dante can be used like a example. or even the other writes of the bibles itself. the divine comedic is basically a selfinsert where dante explain how hell is divided in seven circles if I remember correctly, and how the sinners suffer in each circle depending on how they acted in life. But even if they have the best representation of hell of the bible and used in many medias, is NOT canon to the bible itself

because if it was part of the canon of the bible, why dante hasnt been mentioned in the bible? or describe hell when in the bible there isnt a really a description of the hell itself? each country had a different representation of the religion, of heaven and hell. Each country had different views of the religion or even how god itself it seen or believe.

coming back to sonic, if idw sonic were canon, then how blaze is able to travel to dimensions withouth having all the 14 esmeralds to do it? why sonic acts so different in the comics and in the games? why the resistence is back when it was disbanded in the end of forces? sonic had his own differents universes: sonic x, sonic boom, sonic archie, sonic idw, sonic fleetway, etc. and all of them are inspired by the sonic of the games, like dante did with the bibble. if idw are canon, then the same logic can be applied to sonic x, sonic boom, sonic archie when they were confirmed to be non canon. I guess chris come back to make everyone hate him again lol. and the comment thatr sayed where is the panel where sonic gaslight shadow in using his trauma against him:

I'm sure it's been discussed at length already but I think it's easy to assume saiyans are strong so their genes are dominant but I (like to) think it's the opposite. It's interesting to think that the ecological nature of a saiyan is stealthy and invasive, and according to Jaco a saiyan invasion was going to be extra dangerous to earth because they look like earthlings (and a lot of other human-like races in the db universe) and one baby saiyan will easily go completely undetected until it starts the extermination process.

so it actually makes a lot of sense to me that a saiyan hybrid would take more physical traits from a local species, while maintaining the potential to house a saiyan's strength and inborn power over ki (which I think due to the story following a group of people who use it is a thing we often forgotten is a super rare and dangerous ability in that universe, and inborn/instinctive to a select few very powerful races). Could also be a fun way to explain why their tails can detach and grow back, since that may be the only real Tell.

because like yeah gohan and goten look like goku but they also look like chichi ykwim? trunks and bulla look like bulma. pan looks like videl. thoughts i chew on.

I also just find parasitism a real good meaty horror concept to put in my little 'this is why everyone's afraid of saiyans' headcanon file along with 'can see in the dark, biologically strategic energy consumption, can go long periods without food or rest' and of course the canonical 'surprise monkey werewolf kaiju'
