The pavilion featured a spectacular facade full of protuberances, vaguely reminiscent of the Pedrera building by Antoni Gaudí. The main door was flanked by two pillars representing two female legs wearing stockings and high-heeled shoes. Through the openings of  the irregular façade, visitors could see reproductions of the Saint John the Baptist by Leonardo da Vinci and The Birth of Venus by Botticelli. Between the painter's initial ideas and the [...]

Portrait of doctor Ignacio Chávez, 1957 🗝 This one of the few comissions made by Varo. It has recently been part of an auction held by Christie's. The painting was sold for almost 4 million pounds!

I wanted to reblog this Man Ray photo of Alberto Giacometti's 1934 sculpture Cube, from the Pompidou, months ago when it came around. But then I got fixated on reading Georges Didi-Huberman's 250pg psychophilosophical treatise on it first. You know, to add value.
Anyway, four months later, this was a head, but also abstract, and Giacometti was exploring this shape, inspired by Dürer, when his (Alberto, not Albrecht) father died. This and a tombstone were like some of the few works he made while mourning.

The mediumistic possession relationship naturally brings us to shamanism, that vision of a cosmic balance in which man is one with the cosmos, defined by Roger Caillois in Le mythe et L'Homme as a manifestation of the "power of the individual struggling against the natural orders of reality," an approach that leads to magic, in other words something coming from the "primitive need of the ego to disengage from an ungraspable reality and acquire power with the aid of magic." This phenomenon is also considered among other forms of "primitive" thought in its relationship with surrealism and dream by Jules Monnerot in Modern poetry and the sacred, which undoubtedly explains why Breton valued Monnerot's book so highly (if we can believe the short note added by Gerard Legrand in the Dictionaries général du surréalisme et de environs).

First Marcel Duchamp hung works on revolving doors in the Surrealism exhibition he designed in 1938. Then Sturtevant hung Duchamp works she made on Duchamp Revolving Door in her exhibition at the Everson Museum in 1973.
And there are more Duchamp Doors besides that.
