Day Eighty-six
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a brand new day by the Clyne River, so it's up and at 'em to start off with a roll down the trails and out to the coast once more by Blackpill.
It's a dreary morning with grey skies and a rainy mist obscuring the sight across most of Swansea Bay, but the cool air and lack of wind make for some good riding conditions as I take advantage of the great cycling paths around the coastline around to Swansea.
After a stopoff in the city centre for supplies, it's a pleasant ride around the Maritime Quarter before NCN Route 4 crosses over the River Tawe and carries on eastwards.
The trail keeps firmly out of the traffic which I am grateful for, as the roads here are very busy with the proximity of a junction with the M4 motorway. The cycle route loops around and under the flyovers before crossing the River Neath into Briton Ferry.
I'm finally away from riding alongside busy roads for a stretch as the route dips down into Port Talbot, which then gives way to some large industrial areas and steel mills along the coast.
I've a busy junction to navigate by Margam, with Route 4 departing up into the hills at this point. So it's back to the road for now, tracking next to the motorway before tracking back across the M4 for a ride through Kenfig National Nature Reserve.
The weather alas has decided this is its time to roll in though, and with little buildup a torrential amount of rain begins to pour down. I'm fortunately able to throw the waterproofs on in short order, and after a bit more riding through the downpour am able to duck in to a bus shelter to let the worst pass.
With the rain down to a light drizzle, I carry on down to the sea once more at Porthcawl. The waterfront is quite nice and I'm sure on a sunny day it'd be a beautiful spot!
The wet is continuing though, and with no road through Merthyr Mawr Nature Reserve, it's a long slog up the hills back inland to head into Bridgend.
The rains have abated for now, so I have a bit of a break after navigating some of the interesting parhways bolted over the Ogmore River here.
I head out south from Bridgend towards Ewenny, where I can jump on to Route 88 as it heads back down around the coast of the Bristol Channel. It's a steep climb up initially, but eventually the trail leads on through some rolling hills and pretty country lanes.
With the skies clearing, I'm eventually able to get a good sight of England's coast and Exmoor National Park across the water.
I taje a brief detour at Marcross to go check out the lighthouse at Nash Point, which is set on some nice cliffs, before heading back up and on to the wonderfully named Llantwit Major.
Route 88 heads up to the hills further from the coast at this juncture, and with the afternoon wearing on I decide to stick with the coast and start chugging along the B4265 as it rolls along eastwards. It offers a few more nice views across the channel, before getting hemmed in with greenery once more.
As the road leads on by Cardiff Airport, I'm starting to feel it's time to get aome rest in, and with the forecast threat the possibility of hail later, I'd rather not leave it too late before finding a spot.
Thankfully there are a good few copses and trees not too far from the main road, and a short ride later I find a good sheltered pitch that should hold up for the night.
The border is fast approaching! The forecast for tomorrow doesn't look great so far, but we'll see what the morning holds.
TTFN!

Workers from Stratford City are walking out for the second time. Unite members there have come together against ‘tip theft’, and are striking over the company’s refusal to listen to their concerns after a change in tip policy left them £250 a month worse off.
#McStrike: Last month McDonald’s workers organised in the BFAWU made history when members at two McDonald’s stores went on strike for £10 an hour, an end to zero hour contracts and for their right a union. They won a ten-year record pay rise. On 1st May 2018 – International Workers Day – workers at five McDonald’s stores also went out on strike.
Fast food workers in the US will also be going on strike between between October 2nd and 4th, in tandem with strikes and rallies by airport, hospital, child-care and higher education workers, and other low paid workers. The strikes will be centred in cities in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Florida, Georgia, California and Connecticut.
A full list of solidarity actions and strikes called will be kept updated here: www.waronwant.org/ffs410

Swansea To Bristol Airport - Minibus Hire Swansea
Swansea To Bristol Airport
Providing safe and reliable minibus hire service.
Call 01792 807898
Welcome To Minibus Hire Swansea.
Typically, Swansea to Bristol Airport takes around 1hour 40 minutes with no stops and is about 84 miles. When traveling by road we would leave Swansea travel up the M4 over the seven bridge and then our preferred route is a short trip down the M5 off at Gordano services and onto the B3128, across The A370 onto the B3130 and join the A38 into Bristol Airport.
We provide mini buses of medium size 8 to 16 seaters; these types of minibuses are the most popular for airport transfers Swansea to Bristol.
We can supply larger minibuses if required. Speak to one of our operators to discuss your needs.
Think about the numbers in your group, as booking a minibus larger then you need could cost you more money as the company may charge you for the empty seats.
Consider the distance you have to travel, is a minibus the best choice. If you are a family of four could you make the journey from Swansea to Bristol Airport in a car we do cater for car transport which may work out cheaper for you. Speak to our operator at the time of booking.
Depending on what time of year you go on holidays another option could be we may have other family’s traveling from Swansea to Bristol Airport which could result in shared minibus travel.
Again, speak to our operator when booking your transfers so the best option can be booked to suite you.
Are you thinking of a single one way trip or is it a return journey?  all these factors will come in to play when you are speaking to the hire company.
  Airport Transfers vs Car
We have discovered over the years from speaking to our existing customers as to why they prefer airport transfers to taking their own car.
Convenience, being picked up from your home, driven from Swansea to Bristol airport and dropped off outside the terminal, it’s a lot easier than taking the car and  looking for a parking space. Having the peace of mind that we will be waiting in the arrivals lounge upon your return.
Excitement, some families consider their holidays to start as soon as we pick them up from their home, especially if you have young children with you the excitement on their faces as they travel to the airport is unforgettable.
Arranging the parking, most airports now days want you to pre-book your parking in advance.
So, you arrive at the airport parking barrier drive in and locate a parking space. Park your car and make your way to the office you then have to hand over your keys to a complete stranger who will give you a receipt for your car.
Now when you consider that in most cases your car is the second most valuable investment you will ever make second to your mortgage that is something some of our customers have taken a dislike to.
Some of the stories we have heard from customers regarding their experiences are shocking. One of the main complaints we seem to hear is that they move your car it is never in the same parking bay as you left it.
One customer I recall saying he spent 30 minutes searching for his car whilst his family waited out in the rain because the office forgot to tell him they had moved his car.
So, when planning your next trip away whether it be a holiday or a business trip consider using Minibus Hire Swansea for your transportation from Swansea to Bristol Airport.

Part 1/? - Transmission Part 2/? - The Sandhill Hotel Part 3/? - Piccadilly Part 4/? - The Future Part 5/? - Too Late Part 6/? - The Mystery of the Missing Time Machine Part 7/? - Underway
Peggy had been to the little airstrip near the village of Heathrow a few times during the war.  They’d been working on improving it into a real airport but hadn’t finished before VE day, so work had scaled back to a more leisurely pace, and the new London Airport had opened in 1946.  Seventy years later, the airport had swollen to cover more area than Peggy remembered the entire down as having.  There seemed to be positive miles of faded tarmac and undulating glass buildings, while any remnants of little Heathrow had been devoured as London itself grew inexorably bigger.
Toulouse breezed them through the buildings through Members Only entrances and VIP lounges and such things.  When a woman asked to see their passports, Toulouse just gave her a handful of banknotes, and they kept walking.
“Do you often fly without papers?” Peggy asked quietly.
“I never did that before, actually,” Toulouse replied with a smile on her face.  “I didn’t think it would work!  I almost want to report her for taking bribes, but then I’d be reporting myself, too.”
Everything else had changed so much, Peggy wasn’t sure what to expect from the inside of the airplane.  The cabin was larger and longer than anything she’d seen before, but to her surprise the seats were actually significantly smaller, the ceilings lower, and the leg room less.  It looked bad enough in business class, and when she looked down the aisle to where the economy passengers were boarding, she found them packed in like commuters on a subway train.  It was almost a shock that nobody had to stand.
“Flying used to be a luxurious way to travel,” she commented as she sat down.  Like the cars, the airplane had a seat belt.  She buckled it, just in case.
“Things stop being nice when normal people start being able to afford them,” said Toulouse.
“Did you call your father to tell him where you’re going?” Peggy wanted to know.
“I’m twenty-eight,” Toulouse told her.  “I don’t have to do that anymore.  He wouldn’t answer anyway,” she added with a sigh.  “He only answered the other night because I had Harvinder tell him it was an emergency.  I did tell Prince that I’m going to America with some friends.  If he asks why, I’ll say I’m visiting Junior.”
“Who’s Junior?” asked Howard.
“My oldest brother.  He died when I was still in school, and he’s buried there.”  Toulouse shrugged.  “It’s not the right time of year, but it’s a good excuse, I guess.”
The plane’s takeoff roll was much more gentle than Peggy remembered such things being, and its ascent far quicker.  She had to swallow repeatedly to make her ears pop, and it seemed like no time at all before they were sailing along to the muted roar of the jet engines, with the Bristol Channel glittering in the sunlight below them.  Looking out the window on her left, Peggy could see Cardiff, and she spotted Swansea before clouds moved in, blocking the view of the landscape below.  She settled back in her seat then.  It was going to be a long flight, and even without the clouds there would be nothing much to see outside over the ocean.
Toulouse had her laptop with her, and once the plane reached cruising altitude, she set the computer u on the tray table in front of her and began typing furiously.  Howard, in the aisle seat, took an interest.
“What are you working on?” he asked.
“My master’s thesis,” said Toulouse.  “I’m taking women’s history, and I’m specifically writing about Parliament Joan.  Her real name was Elizabeth Alkin.  She ran her own publishers, distributing propaganda for the Parliamentarians during the English Civil War, and used her connections to find and discredit people who were printing for the Royalists.”
“An ancestor of yours?” Howard asked Peggy.
“No, but something of a role model,” Peggy replied with a smile.  She’d first heard of the woman during her teens, from the other ladies in the codebreaking office, and had immediately set out to read all she could about her.
“People think of her mainly as a spy,” Toulouse said, “but she also had to be a businesswoman, and she wasn’t very good at it to start with.  I was at the National Archives because they’ve got some of her letters there, written in her very own handwriting.”
Peggy nodded.  “It is magical, isn’t it?  When you get to touch something from the past, knowing who held it before you?”  She thought of some of the things the SSR had recovered after the war.  There’d been famous art, and mystical artefacts, and things that had to have come light-years across the depths of space to be there.  With some of them she knew who had held them before her, but there were others she could only wonder about.
“It really is,” Toulouse agreed.
“Your family must be very proud of you,” said Peggy.  The words came out quite automatically, and it was only once they were already spoken that she remembered what Toulouse had already said about her father.
Toulouse sighed.  “I haven’t spoken to my mother in four years,” she said.  “And Daddy just says it’s good I’m keeping occupied.”
“I’m sorry,” Peggy said.  Her own father had died of a heart attack when she was only seven, and her mother had never had much money, but she had good memories of both as loving parents.  She looked at Howard – he didn’t talk much about his family but she had the definite impression that they’d never understood him.  He would be more qualified to commiserate with Toulouse about this.
“They don’t know what they’re missing,” Howard told her.  “Someday they’ll come to you begging for a favour, and you’ll be able to tell them to stuff it.  It’ll feel great.”
Peggy shut her eyes.  She could feel the headache coming on already.
The people who ran airlines knew that twelve-hour flights were deathly boring, and attempted to fill the time by showing movies.  The movies themselves, unfortunately, were absolutely dreadful.  There was one about a robotic policeman and another about a haunted doll, and Peggy got no more than ten minutes into either of them before she removed the little speakers she’d been given to put in her ears, and tried to sleep instead.
She doubted she’d be able to nod off, but she must have, because she woke hearing Howard and Toulouse talking quietly.
“So when I say he’s buried there,” Toulouse was telling him, “it’s more that he’s got his name on a monument, because they didn’t find his body.  Daddy hasn’t been to America for years because of it.  Whenever he has something to do there, he sends Cass.”
“Cass is… brother number two, right?” Howard asked.
“Yes, in between Junior and Prince,” said Toulouse.
“No sisters?”
“Just me,” Toulouse said.  “I’m the girl.”
Peggy closed her eyes again.  During the war she’d had a sense that things were getting better for women.  There’d been a new appreciation for their traditional roles, as well as for their ability to work at what were considered men’s jobs.  She’d stayed at the SSR because she’d wanted to finish what Steve Rogers and Sergeant Barnes had started, but also because she’d honestly thought she’d be useful and welcome there.  The men who worked there had other ideas.  They’d thought that with the war over, it was time for the women to go home.If she’d thought about it, Peggy would have hoped that seventy years would have resulted in some progress.  Yet here he was, sitting next to a young woman who was evidently much more intelligent and accomplished than her taste in hair dye would lead one to believe, but whose family didn’t care what she did because she was the Girl.  It was really terribly depressing.
They arrived in Toronto at nine in the evening local time, and during the layover they were able to get something to eat that wasn’t airplane food.  The cost of the sodas and sandwiches absolutely appalled Peggy and Howard both – nine dollars for tuna fish on white bread! – but Toulouse paid it without comment.  Apparently inflation was another one of the things that had simply gone on uninterrupted.
Flight schedules hadn’t changed much, either.  Their departure from Toronto was delayed, so it was closer to four than two-thirty when they finally reached Los Angeles.  A small bus took them from the airport to the Sandhill Hotel in Playa Del Rey, where all three of them collapsed into bed.
They had separate rooms within the suite this time, thank heavens, so if Howard and Toulouse had any more sex, Peggy at least didn’t have to listen to it.
Toulouse had sent their things to the hotel laundry overnight, so in the morning Peggy and Howard were able to put on clothes that were probably cleaner than when they’d bought them.  A woman came to drop them off while the group was having breakfast.  Peggy and Howard were sitting in their hotel bathrobes, and Toulouse’s outfit today was tight-fitting polka-dot leggings and a shirt with something on it that was quite unidentifiable – it had cartoon eyes and a smile, and a shape that Peggy chose to charitably assume represented a curl of chocolate ice cream.
The hotel employee, a brunette in her mid-twenties, kept looking at Toulouse out of the corner of her eye as she spread the clean clothes out on the bed.  Finally she straightened up and said, “before I go, I have to know – aren’t you Toulouse Sandhill?”
“Yes!” Toulouse replied, pulling out her wallet to give the woman a tip.  “And you’re… Madison,” she read off the nametag.  “Nice to meet you.”
Madison held out a wrist.  “I’m wearing your perfume!” she said.
Toulouse sniffed it.  “You are!  I’m so glad you like it!”
“Is it true that there’s a giant apocalypse bunker under this hotel?” Madison asked eagerly.  “I’ve never actually gone looking for it but I’ve seen websites about it, and people think it’s some sort of New World Order type thing.”
“I have no idea,” said Toulouse, but the idea didn’t seem to startle her.  “I’ve never been here before.  I can ask Cass about it, if you like.”
“No, no, I figured you wouldn’t say,” Madison replied, with a knowing smile.  “It was so cool to meet you!  Thanks for the tip!”  And she scurried out.
Peggy sipped her tea thoughtfully.  “You didn’t mention an apocalypse bunker,” she said to Toulouse.  Wasn’t it just a coincidence that an ‘apocalypse bunker’ was exactly where she and Howard had to go?
“I didn’t think of it,” said Toulouse.  “I don’t even know if it’s real.  Like I said, I’ve never been to this location before, but I know the Americans have apocalypse bunkers all over the country.  There’s a big one under the Stanley Springs Hotel in Tennessee, that was built for the government to hide in during the Cold War.  I’ve never been there, either, but they give tours.  I saw a YouTube video about it.”
“You said this hotel was ten years old,” Peggy recalled.  “When did the ‘Cold War’ end?”
“I was a kid.  Let me see…”  Toulouse grabbed her phone to look it up.  “1991 was when the Soviet Union fell apart, and I definitely know that the Playa Del Rey opened in 2006, because Junior had been in charge of the project and there was an eight-month delay after he died.”
“That’s fifteen years,” said Peggy.  Who built a bunker against a threat that had ended fifteen years ago?  She looked at Howard, to see what he thought.
He could tell where she was headed.  “You think maybe our clue is here in the hotel?” he asked.
That was an oddly reasonable hypothesis.  Knowing that they’d been involved with the Sandhill family on their little adventure through time, Peggy and Howard might well have left the time machine plans here, where they would be easily accessible without breaking any laws.  Or would they?  By 2006 Peggy would be retired and Howard would be dead, and with the building of the hotel delayed by the death of the owner’s son, all sorts of things might intervene.
“It could be,” she said.  “I don’t know.”  They could bury something here ahead of time, but how could they be sure it wouldn’t be dug up and lost when the hotel was built?  Then again, if it were here to find, that by itself would be their answer…
Howard pointed his breakfast fork at Toulouse’s phone.  “While we’re here, what’s that Internet got to say about die Glocke?”
“How do you spell it?” Toulouse wanted to know.
Howard told her, and she entered it in her search engine.  Her eyes darted back and forth over the results that came up.  “Okay, it says there was some Polish guy who wrote a book about it… according to him it’s supposed to be a weapon that kills every living thing for miles around, and it was built in a Nazi base near Wenceslaus Mine.”
That name made Peggy perk up.  “I’ve been to Wenceslaus,” she said.  “I was there with Steve, but there was nothing in it.  Somebody had warned them we were coming, and they had time to clean it out.”
“Warned them you were coming?” Toulouse asked.  “Like as if somebody came back from the future to tell them?”
At the time Peggy hadn’t thought of that – why would she? – but now it seemed worryingly plausible.  In that case… “Die Glocke can’t be the time machine itself, because Zola said they were searching for it, but yes, very like that.”  She took a bite of bagel and thought about it.  “I wonder whether perhaps they transmitted the entire contents of the base to the future, and now they’re hoping to get a machine in the right place at the right time to pick it up.”  In which case they were planning to materialize their superweapon right in the middle of London.
“That was winter 1944, wasn’t it?” Howard said.  “If they’ve had the time machine that long, then we’re in trouble, because just returning to 1948 won’t be enough to stop them.”
“No, it won’t.”  Peggy groaned.  “This just gets more complicated by the hour!”
“So what are you gonna do?” asked Toulouse.
She thought about it a moment.  The hotel might be worth checking out, but they didn’t actually know if it even existed.  The Sierra bunker still seemed the most obvious choice.  “We’ll stick to the original plan,” she decided.  “If there’s nothing in the bunker, we’ll come back here and look.”

PLACES TO GET TESTED IN LONDON FOR COVID-19 TESTING
Tumblr media
Non-UK citizens who need a COVID-19 test before leaving the country or entering their country of destination are not tested in the London COVID-19 Assessment Centres. It is in line with a global shift in testing standards.
Individuals should speak with their travel provider for the most up-to-date information on testing requirements for international travel approval. Private testing facilities are now an option for travellers needing a COVID-19 exam.
PCRTEST.CO.UK
London's leading testing facility for the Coronavirus (Covid-19). All our testing solutions are geared toward providing you with the most accurate and timely findings possible, focusing on safety and the utmost attention to detail.
Even though other tests are available for Coronavirus (Covid-19), the PCR test proved to be the most reliable over the past year. PCR Test Ltd specialises in PCR testing for travel and work in London, as its name suggests. The fastest and most accurate testing method available today is PCR Testing, which is a well-established, scalable procedure. The PCR test has become an international standard and is now required by more nations than ever for international departures and arrivals in the UK. We provide PCR testing and a related certificate of fitness to fly. Inquiring minds want to know: What is a "fit to fly." A signed and stamped document from an accredited clinic, also certified by a doctor recognised with the General Medical Council, certifying that you are free of symptoms of COVID-19 is known as a fit to travel certificate.
Testing for overseas travel is available for a charge at the following places. This list is for information only.
Consult With a Private Covid Testing Clinic in Finchley Road or Hampstead
Finchley Road, where our Clinic is located, has good transportation connectivity to all of London's major airports. You may walk nearby Thames Link station and take a train to Luton or Gatwick airports. Outside Finchley Road station, a National Express bus stop provides service to Luton and Stansted airports. Heathrow airport is a stone's throw away by cab, 30 - 40 minutes through Heathrow Express or roughly an hour by the tube. However, the Eurostar St Pancras is only a mere 15 minutes away!
Edgware Station is just a short walk away from our Clinic in Edgware. This private Covid testing centre is located just off the A5 in Broadwalk shopping centre, making it easy to get to Luton, Stansted, and Heathrow airports in less than 45 minutes. Nearby Golders Green bus station offers connections to all of London's airports and the rest of the United Kingdom, from Cornwall to Scotland.
Two minutes walk from Baker Street station is our Clinic's location. Baker Street is the starting point for most of the city's major tube lines, including the Jubilee, Circle, Hammersmith, Baker-loo, and Metropolitan. Two minutes walk from Marylebone station is the Marylebone national rail service, which provides service to the cities of Birmingham, Banbury, Bicester and High Wycombe. The Baker-loo line also serves elephant and Castle and Harrow & Wealdstone. The green line and the Oxford tube bus arrive at the station every ten minutes. All the National Rail lines may be accessed via Paddington Station, which offers a frequent service to Heathrow Airport and connects to all local buses. Swansea, Hayes & Harlington, Bristol, Didcot Parkway, Cheltenham Spa, Reading, Great Malvern, and Heathrow's Terminal 5 are connected by the Paddington train.

Most major roads in Cardiff city centre are shut as an expected 170,000 people arrive for the Champions League final.
Saturday's match between Real Madrid and Juventus will be the biggest sporting event of 2017.
Most roads closed at midnight and will not reopen until 03:30 BST on Sunday, with people warned not to drive into the city.
Arriva Trains Wales urged people not to come by train unless necessary as restrictions are in place.
Police are set to enforce additional stop and search powers as part of a massive security operation.
South Wales Police Assistant Chief Constable Richard Lewis said: "We will have in the region of 2,000 police officer deployments across Cardiff, with every officer fully aware of the huge task ahead and committed to ensuring residents and visitors to the capital have a safe and enjoyable experience.
"We continue to advise people who don't have tickets to the match to avoid travelling by car or public transport to the city centre due to the unprecedented influx of visitors we are expecting.
"For those who have tickets, our advice is to allow extra time for travel and security checks and to remain vigilant throughout the day. You are also advised not to bring a bag to the stadium, there will bag drops across the city."
Drivers have also been banned from all roads around the National Stadium of Wales, Callaghan Square and the Capitol Shopping Centre.

The first of the phased road closures came into force on Thursday.
Cowbridge Road East was closed between Lower Cathedral Road and Westgate Street, at the south east corner of Bute Park, on Wednesday and will remain shut until 06:00 on Monday.
Lloyd George Avenue has been shut from Callaghan Square to Cardiff Bay, with further closures around Bute Place, until 22:00 on Sunday.
Cardiff Central Station is expected to be very busy all day and no Arriva services will leave the station between 19:00 and 23:00.
After that time, the station will only be open for services to Bristol, London, the Midlands, the Shropshire marches and Swansea only, with some services running until 05:00 on Sunday.
Cardiff and Valleys services will run from Queen Street station.
A queuing system is in place, but passengers are being warned it could take up to 90 minutes to get on board a train.
Gareth Thomas, from Arriva Trains Wales, said 50,000 additional places were available, adding: "We've had to put on an additional 82 services and run later than we normally do."
Meanwhile, police are also investigating the theft of 13 tickets for the final from a hotel near Cardiff Airport.
They have warned anyone buying tickets off the street could be refused entry to the stadium if they turn out to be stolen.

Great Western Railway experiences rail chaos as overhead line damage disrupts thousands of train journeys
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Britain’s luckiest rail passenger is probably James Dove, a London lawyer. At lunchtime, he turned up by Tube at Paddington station blissfully unaware that no trains had departed all day on the Great Western Railway to the Thames Valley, the west of England and south Wales.
But at platform 11 he simply stepped aboard the delayed 12.27pm to Didcot Parkway. It was the first train to leave Paddington after overhead line damage seven miles west caused all routes out of the station to be closed.
“I was given an urgent case in Reading, so I just headed to Paddington,” he told The Independent.
Watch more
Only a few dozen passengers were aboard the train, because all day the message from the rail industry had been: do not travel.
When the train finally set off, it accelerated past the Hitachi train depot three miles west of Paddington.
The closure was triggered by a Hitachi train being tested before entering passenger service. Somehow it appears to have shredded about one third of a mile of overhead line, and knocked out the power to other tracks.
The train that caused the damage was able to move under its own power; it was a “bi-mode” with both electric and diesel traction, designed to operate on lines to Devon and Cornwall.
But seven other electric-only trains were stranded, including a Heathrow Express train on the fast westbound line, obliging all services to use the slow line.
Nicola Sedgwick tweeted: “Oh the irony – test electric train destroys electric cabling thus putting a stop to all trains both electric and diesel.”
Many passengers missed flights as a result of the fast link to the airport grinding to a halt.
Jennifer Smith from London boarded the Heathrow Express on Tuesday evening to travel to the airport for a flight to Dubai, but arrived too late.
She was obliged to pay for a hotel and re-book her flight for Wednesday.
It is not clear if she will be able to claim recompense from the failure.
Going nowhere: a Heathrow Express train west of Ealing (Simon Calder)
On Wednesday, Heathrow passengers were advised to use the Piccadilly Line on the London Underground, which itself had long gaps in airport services.
By the time the pioneering train from Paddington arrived at Hayes & Harlington station, 11 miles west of the capital, other trains were running – but only a fraction of the 100,000-plus passengers who normally use the London terminus on a working day travelled on the Great Western Railway (GWR) today.
Many simply gave up on attempts to reach the capital. While some trains ran from the west of England and south Wales as far as Reading, passengers were then instructed to travel on the slow route to London Waterloo. But signalling problems meant that trains on this line were delayed by up to an hour.
A Network Rail spokesperson said: “Extensive damage to 500 metres of overhead electric power lines last night means no trains have been able to run between London Paddington and Reading and Heathrow this morning.
“Engineers have been working round the clock and have managed to clear debris from the damage and restore power so trapped trains that were blocking the line can be moved.
“As a result two lines out of the four that are usually used are now open meaning a minimal service will be in place for the rest of today.”
The closure of Paddington is merely the latest disruption to affect Great Western Railway passengers, who have endured years of upheaval connected with the delayed and over-budget electrification project.
The original plan to electrify Brunel’s main line to Bristol Temple Meads, as well as the route to Cardiff and Swansea, was abandoned to save money.
As a result, heavier trains carrying both electric and diesel motors have been deployed.
The train being tested was a type already in service.
A Hitachi spokesperson said: “After years of successful testing on the route we are taking today very seriously, a full and thorough investigation is taking place to identify the cause.”
If it is found that there is a design fault in the train type, the repercussions could be serious; former GWR High Speed Trains are currently being deployed on InterCity routes in Scotland, to replace slow and inadequate rolling stock.
At Hayes & Harlington station, most trains were still shown as cancelled. But a train marked “Not in Service” arrived at platform 4, the doors opened, passengers boarded and it continued, stopping at all stations to Paddington.
It arrived on platform 9, beside the statue of Isambard Kingdom Brunel – the man who created the Great Western Railway and Paddington station 164 years ago.
Simon Calder (right) made it all the way from London Paddington to Hayes & Harlington and back, a distance of 22 miles, in under an hour (Simon Calder)
Meanwhile National Rail Enquiries was urging travellers to steer clear of the Waterloo-Reading line – instead advising Steph Woodland to travel from London to Bridgend in south Wales by way of Basingstoke.
While most passengers will be able to claim back the cost of their ticket because of the disruption, the wider effect on the economy is impossible to quantify – but will certainly run into millions of pounds.
