It's been about six years since I have rescued this black and white pit bull from almost getting hit by traffic. Lately, my father has been taking her to the vet, due to change in appetite (basically not eating or drinking). Well, it turns out she was taken in prior to these symptoms for a checkup where the vet found a huge tick on her.
Initially, lyme disease popped into my head, since this bastard of an illness can cause long term issues down the road if not treated immediately after the tick dislodges itself from the host. Usually, deer ticks will latch on for up to 48 hours and just leave a huge rash. Technically, I have been told the sooner you get it off, the less chances of lyme disease to happen.
However, doctors or vets will still prescribe medications to take care of this. Sadly, our case was rare; the tick must have been on her longer than 48 hours and caused significant damage to her body.
Now, she has been diagnosed with kidney failure. Even more damning: this dog is clearly not a young adult. She supposedly is about 8-9 human years, and ESRD and ESKD is common in seniors.
At this point, she has not eaten or drank anything. Her ribs are becoming prominent. Even worse, just a few hours ago, my older brother informed me she has experienced two seizure episodes. It breaks my heart to know her days are basically numbered, since neither my father nor my brothers are able to afford any more appointments or treatments.
On the other hand, I'm surprised she lasted this long and perhaps the animal hospital will suggest euthanisation if nothing improves.
