There’s word (very strong and big word) that Donald Trump is going to start mass deportations on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
He wants any immigrants, no matter how long they have been a citizen of the USA, to be deported either out of the country as a whole or into what are basically concentration camps. They’re starting in Chicago, Illinois. The US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has started raiding homes and families in California. Here’s some information.
When it comes to spotting an ICE agent, look for these:
Weirdly neat/well kept hair (shaved heads, side parts, military burs for men; low buns, high ponytails, close cropped bobs for women)
Oversized jacket (long and bulky outerwear makes it easier to hide tools/equipment without being suspicious)
Both hands in pockets
Many undercover agents/cops buy cheap plain clothes off the racks so they aren’t seen in their own clothes. This can make their outfit seem awkward
Sweatshirts with the hood up
Sports apparel (warm up jacket, sweats, etc) with non-sports clothes (jeans, cargo shorts)
Cargo pants/shorts (usually full of items like their badge, flashlight, taser, pepper spray, backup handcuffs, zip ties)
Military or hiking style boots, sometimes chunky sneakers (extra points if none of it matches anything in their outfit)
Outline of a gun in their pants/shirt (easy to see when bending, leaning, or raising arms) (NO NOT SAY ANYTHING)
Overly friendly
Overly inquisitive
“How old are you” and “what do you know about this happening” are both red flags, along with generally odd and personal questions
Don’t fit in
Mismatched pairs in public spaces (usually cops do these things in pairs. They don’t talk to each other or acknowledge each other much, if at all)
DO NOT SAY ANYTHING UNTIL YOU ARE 100% SURE
YOUR BEST BET IS NOT TO SAY ANYTHING UNTIL THE SUSPECT STARTS ACTING OFF AND GETTING PUSHY
COPS ARE NOT OBLIGATED TO TELL YOU THAT THEY ARE UNDERCOVER
COPS CAN AND WILL LIE TO YOU
SCREAM “LA MIGRA” AT THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS
For protesting:
N95 masks
Respirator/gas mask if you have access to one
Water water water water water (I hate to say it, but disposable one use bottles are best here. If it comes to it, you need to be able to drop and run.)
Snacks
Eyedrops (teargas is a bitch)
Goggles (I bring my old snowboarding goggles)
If you are wearing a t-shirt or have exposed skin, put on fake tattoos. If you are brought into something and they say you were there, showing a picture of you with the tattoos, show them where that tattoo would be and how there’s nothing there. How would you get rid of a giant flower on your forearm in 2 days anyways?
Hide your hair. I tuck my hair into my beanie since it’s short. If you have longer hair, try to do the same or tuck it into your shirt.
Power bank
Chargers
Helmet. Any is fine, my personal choice is a skating helmet since they’re rounder and can take more damage
Hand sanitizer
Gloves (either to keep your hands warm or simple nitrile exam gloves, both work)
Bandanas. Somebody might need one for their face or hair, maybe you need to get dirt off somebody’s face, maybe somebody got injured. They’re great for anything and everything
Cash (try to stick to cash, your card can be tracked)
Medications if you take them. If you get arrested or happen to somehow be away for longer than expected after the protest, it’s always good to have emergency meds
FIRST AID ALL THE FIRST AID (Tourniquet, Quikclot, chest seal, trauma shears, gauze, bandages, duct tape, and all the usual stuff you’d have in there)
Good shoes
Spare socks. Trust me.
As much covering clothing as you can handle. Plain jeans, plain hoodie, plain t-shirt, keep yourself as anonymous as possible
Photocopy of your ID
Sunscreen
Make sure your clothes have pockets
Do not wear contact lenses. If tear gas is used, that will make everything so much worse. Wear your glasses or go blind.
If you use mobility aids, cover defining features. Logos, brand names, colors, stickers, all of it. Take some old plain t-shirt and tie it around your wheelchair’s backrest. Wrap your wheelchair frame in cling wrap, then duct tape, or plain black self adhering medical tape. Cover stickers on your cane or crutches the same way. Electric chair? You have a little more work, but you can do it. Same idea. Walker? Same thing. Cover. It. All.
If you are bringing a bag, make sure that bag is as plain as possible. No pins. No patches. No keychains.
Scarf if you have one
Write a reliable phone number (of someone who is not at the protest with you) on your body. On the off chance you get arrested, that is your emergency contact.
Pocket knife.
Pepper spray/mace
Anything you can throw. Soup for my family.
IF YOU CAN, LEAVE YOUR PHONE AT HOME
IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE IT WITH YOU FOR WHATEVER REASON, TURN OFF LOCATION SERVICES ON ALL APPS AND TURN OFF BIOMETRICS (FACE ID AND FINGERPRINT) SO YOU CAN ONLY UNLOCK YOUR PHONE WITH YOUR PASSWORD
MAKE SURE SOMEBODY KNOWS GENERALLY WHERE YOU ARE
I do not want to scare anybody, but this is what life is right now. That man does not care how long you have been a citizen of this country. If you are not white, cisgender, heterosexual, Christian, and male, you are seen as less than by men in power. You are not less than. You are a threat to them, and they are scared. Keep it that way.
Here's the link to my post on what to bring in terms of first aid.
If you cannot attend protests, that’s fine. Do what’s best for you. Simply reposting information helps.

HyperOS 2.2: The Global Update That Will Redefine Your Xiaomi Experience
Tumblr media
How Xiaomi's latest system update is set to transform over 130 device models worldwide
If you're among the millions of Xiaomi, Redmi, or POCO users worldwide, July 2025 is about to become a very significant month for you. After months of rigorous testing across global markets, HyperOS 2.2 is finally ready for its worldwide debut.
This isn't just another incremental update. It's a comprehensive reimagining of what your smartphone experience can be.
The Scale of Ambition
Xiaomi has completed what might be one of the most extensive mobile OS testing programs in recent memory. More than 130 devices across their entire ecosystem — from budget-friendly entry-level phones to premium flagship models — have undergone exhaustive testing phases.
But here's what makes this different: the global beta testing phase wasn't just about finding bugs. It was about understanding how users in different regions, with different usage patterns and expectations, actually interact with their devices.
"Think of it as Xiaomi learning not just what works, but what works for whom, where, and why."
Beyond the Numbers: What This Means for Users
The Compatibility Promise
When a company commits to updating 130+ device models simultaneously, it's making a statement about longevity and user respect. Here's the breakdown:
Flagship Territory:
Xiaomi 15 series (all variants)
Xiaomi 14 series (including T models)
Xiaomi 13 series (complete lineup)
Xiaomi 12 series (every single model)
Innovation Showcase:
MIX Fold series (2, 3, 4)
MIX Flip
The Redmi Ecosystem:
K series (K50 Ultra through K80 Pro)
Note series (12 through 14, all variants)
Numbered series (12, 13, 14, including 5G models)
POCO's Gaming-First Approach:
F series (performance-focused)
X series (balanced offerings)
M and C series (value propositions)
Tablets Join the Revolution:
Xiaomi Pad series 6 and 7
Redmi Pad lineup
POCO Pad
The Technical Evolution
What's Actually New
HyperOS 2.2 represents more than visual changes. The update introduces:
Performance Architecture: Xiaomi has rebuilt core system processes for better resource management. Apps launch faster, multitasking feels smoother, and battery optimization algorithms have been refined based on real-world usage data from the beta testing phase.
AI Integration: The artificial intelligence features aren't just marketing buzzwords. Camera processing, predictive text, and system optimization now leverage machine learning models trained on diverse user behaviors across different markets.
Security Framework: With cyber threats evolving rapidly, HyperOS 2.2 introduces enhanced protection mechanisms while maintaining the user-friendly experience Xiaomi users expect.
The Global Strategy
What's fascinating about Xiaomi's approach is how they've handled regional variations. The system underwent testing in markets as diverse as:
China (home market advantages)
Europe (GDPR compliance and privacy expectations)
India (diverse language and usage patterns)
Russia (specific regional requirements)
Turkey (bridging European and Asian user preferences)
Taiwan (advanced tech adoption patterns)
Indonesia (emerging market dynamics)
Each region provided unique insights that shaped the final release.
The July Timeline: What to Expect
Rollout Strategy
Xiaomi learned from previous large-scale updates. Instead of a simultaneous global push that could overwhelm servers and support systems, they're implementing a carefully orchestrated rollout:
Week 1 (Early July):
Flagship Xiaomi devices
MIX series
Premium tablets
Week 2-3 (Mid-July):
Xiaomi 13 and 12 series
Redmi K series
POCO F and X series
Week 4 + (Late July/Early August):
Entry-level models
Older Note series devices
Budget tablets
Preparing for the Transition
Technical Preparation
Storage Management: Ensure at least 3GB of free storage. The update package is substantial, and you'll need additional space for the installation process.
Backup Strategy: While Xiaomi's update process is generally reliable, backing up your essential data is always prudent. Use Mi Mover or your preferred cloud service.
Power Management: Start the update with at least 50% battery. Consider connecting to a charger during the installation process.
Expectation Management
Initial Adjustment Period: Like any major system update, there might be a brief learning curve as you discover new features and adjusted interfaces.
App Compatibility: Most apps will work seamlessly, but some may require updates from their developers to fully leverage new HyperOS 2.2 capabilities.
The Broader Context
Industry Implications
Xiaomi's approach with HyperOS 2.2 signals something important about the current state of the smartphone industry. While hardware innovations have plateaued somewhat, software optimization and user experience refinement have become the new battlegrounds.
Sustainability Angle
By extending the functional lifespan of devices dating back to 2021 (Xiaomi 12 series), this update represents a meaningful commitment to reducing electronic waste. Users can delay hardware upgrades while still accessing contemporary software features.
Market Positioning
This update reinforces Xiaomi's strategy of providing premium experiences across multiple price points. A Redmi user gets many of the same core improvements as a flagship Xiaomi user.
Looking Ahead
What This Means for Future Updates
The success of this rollout will likely influence how Xiaomi approaches future major updates. The extensive testing methodology and regional customization approach could become the new standard.
HyperOS Evolution
With HyperOS 2.3 already in development alongside Android 16, Xiaomi is clearly committed to rapid iteration and improvement. The 2.2 release establishes the foundation for even more ambitious future updates.
The Bottom Line
HyperOS 2.2 represents more than a software update — it's Xiaomi's vision of how mobile operating systems should evolve in 2025 and beyond. By prioritizing extensive testing, global optimization, and broad device compatibility, they're setting new standards for the industry.
For users, this means getting more value from devices they already own, while experiencing innovations typically reserved for much newer hardware.
The July 2025 rollout will be worth watching, not just for Xiaomi users, but for anyone interested in how major tech companies can successfully manage large-scale software deployments in our increasingly connected world.
Stay updated on your device notifications starting in July. The future of mobile experience is about to arrive in your pocket.
What's your current Xiaomi device? Share in the comments which HyperOS 2.2 features you're most excited about.

Post 2: Breaking It Down – What is Cloud Computing?
Visualize never losing a file again, even in the event that your phone disappears or your laptop fails. This is one of the common advantages of cloud computing, a technology that lets users save, retrieve, and control data online rather than using local storage devices like hard drives or USB drives.
Fundamentally, cloud computing eliminates the necessity of storing all of your data and applications on just one device. Rather, they are housed on strong servers (referred to as "the cloud") and are accessible from any location at any time so long as you have an internet connection.
Typical cloud-based tools include the following:
Google Drive: Share, edit, and upload files and presentations between devices.
Dropbox: Sync files between your PC, tablet, and phone.
Businesses use Amazon Web Services (AWS) to manage databases, websites, and even whole business processes online.
Principal Advantages of Cloud Computing:
Flexibility: You can work from home, school, or even while riding the bus.
Affordability: No need for pricey storage devices or infrastructure.
Scalability: Companies can expand without having to make further investments in their physical infrastructure.
However, convenience also entails responsibility. Sound cybersecurity procedures are essential to cloud computing. Data might be exposed to hackers by using weak passwords or unprotected networks. Understanding how to safeguard your files and private data is crucial.

As Dubai’s business landscape continues to evolve, companies are seeking the best tools to streamline operations, boost productivity, and enhance decision-making. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software has become a critical component for organizations in various industries, offering a unified platform to manage everything from accounting to human resources. However, choosing the best ERP software for your Dubai-based company can be daunting due to the numerous options available.
Here are key features to consider when selecting the best ERP software to meet the unique demands of Dubai's fast-paced and diverse business environment.
1. Localization and VAT Compliance
One of the top priorities when selecting ERP software for Dubai businesses is ensuring that it complies with the UAE’s regulations, especially regarding VAT. Since the introduction of VAT in the UAE in 2018, businesses must ensure accurate VAT reporting and compliance with local tax laws.
Look for an ERP solution that supports:
Automated VAT calculation and reporting.
Customizable tax settings for local and international transactions.
Real-time compliance updates to reflect changing regulations.
2. Multi-Language and Multi-Currency Support
Dubai is home to a highly diverse workforce, with employees and customers hailing from all over the world. The best ERP software should offer multi-language support to accommodate users from different backgrounds and improve communication across the company.
Additionally, multi-currency capabilities are essential for businesses dealing in global markets, allowing you to:
Seamlessly manage transactions in various currencies.
Automate currency conversion based on real-time exchange rates.
Generate accurate financial reports for multiple currencies.
3. Scalability and Flexibility
The dynamic nature of Dubai’s economy demands that businesses stay agile and be ready to scale. Whether you’re a startup or an established enterprise, your ERP system should be scalable to grow alongside your business.
Look for ERP software that:
Can handle increasing data and transactions without affecting performance.
Offers modularity so you can add functionalities as needed (e.g., production, sales, and HR management).
Integrates with existing systems and third-party applications to maintain operational fluidity.
4. Cloud-Based Accessibility
Given the high mobility of today’s workforce, cloud-based ERP software is increasingly popular for Dubai companies. Cloud solutions allow your team to access the ERP system from anywhere, ensuring flexibility and business continuity.
Advantages of cloud-based ERP include:

Look for ERP solutions with:
Customizable dashboards that display real-time data relevant to your business.

Enhancing Home Accessibility: A Guide to Choosing the Perfect Residential Elevator
Tumblr media
In today's fast-paced world, where convenience and accessibility are paramount, integrating innovative solutions into our homes is becoming increasingly common. One such solution gaining popularity is residential elevators, often referred to as home lifts. These elevators not only add a touch of luxury to your residence but also enhance accessibility, especially for individuals with mobility challenges. As the demand for home elevators continues to rise, it's crucial to understand their benefits, types, installation process, and factors to consider when choosing the perfect lift for your home.
Understanding Home Elevators
Home elevators are compact, space-saving systems designed to provide vertical transportation within residential properties. Unlike commercial elevators, which are larger and designed for high-traffic areas, home elevators are tailored to fit the unique needs and aesthetic preferences of residential spaces. They offer a convenient way to navigate multiple floors, making them ideal for individuals with mobility issues, aging homeowners, or families seeking to future-proof their homes.
Benefits of Home Elevators
1. Accessibility: The primary benefit of home elevators is improved accessibility. They enable individuals with mobility limitations to move effortlessly between floors, eliminating the need to navigate stairs and reducing the risk of accidents.
2. Convenience: Home elevators enhance convenience by streamlining daily activities. Whether you're carrying groceries, laundry, or moving furniture, a residential elevator makes it easier to transport heavy or bulky items between floors.
3. Aesthetic Appeal: Modern home elevators are available in a variety of sleek designs and finishes, allowing homeowners to customize their elevators to complement their interior decor. From glass shafts to elegant cabin interiors, these elevators add a touch of sophistication to any home.
4. Property Value: Installing a home elevator can significantly increase the resale value of your property. It appeals to potential buyers looking for luxurious amenities and future-proofs your home by accommodating aging homeowners or individuals with disabilities.
Types of Home Elevators
1. Hydraulic Elevators: Hydraulic home elevators are powered by a hydraulic piston located beneath the elevator car. They are known for their smooth ride quality and are suitable for low to mid-rise residential buildings.
2. Traction Elevators: Traction home elevators use a system of ropes and counterweights to move the elevator car. They are more energy-efficient than hydraulic elevators and are ideal for taller residential buildings.
3. Pneumatic Vacuum Elevators: Pneumatic home elevators operate using air pressure to move the elevator car between floors. They are a popular choice for retrofitting existing homes due to their minimal space requirements and easy installation.
4. Traditional Elevators: Traditional home elevators resemble commercial elevators and are often customized to blend seamlessly with the home's architecture and interior design. They offer a wide range of customization options, including cabin size, finishes, and fixtures.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Home Elevator
1. Space Availability: Evaluate the available space in your home to determine the type and size of elevator that best fits your needs. Consider factors such as shaft size, elevator footprint, and headroom clearance when planning the installation.
2. Capacity: Determine the expected usage and number of passengers the elevator will accommodate to select the appropriate capacity. Standard home elevators typically range from 500 to 1000 pounds, but custom options are available for larger households or commercial applications.
3. Safety Features: Prioritize safety when choosing a home elevator. Look for features such as emergency stop buttons, interlocks, safety sensors, and battery backups to ensure the elevator operates reliably and securely.
4. Budget: Establish a budget for your home elevator project, taking into account not only the initial installation costs but also ongoing maintenance and operational expenses. Compare quotes from multiple manufacturers to find a solution that meets your needs and fits your budget.
5. Code Compliance: Ensure the home elevator meets local building codes and safety regulations. Work with a licensed contractor or elevator company experienced in residential installations to ensure compliance with all applicable standards.
6. Maintenance Requirements: Consider the long-term maintenance requirements of the home elevator, including servicing, inspections, and repairs. Choose a reputable manufacturer with a track record of reliability and responsive customer support to minimize downtime and ensure optimal performance.
Installation Process
The installation process for a home elevator typically involves several key steps:
1. Site Assessment: A professional installer will visit your home to assess the available space, structural requirements, and electrical needs for the elevator installation.
2. Customization: Once the site assessment is complete, you'll work with the installer to customize the elevator to your specifications, including cabin design, finishes, and features.
3. Preparation: The installer will prepare the site for elevator installation, which may involve construction work to create a shaft or retrofit existing space for the elevator system.
4. Installation: The elevator components, including the shaft, car, drive system, and controls, will be installed according to the manufacturer's specifications and local building codes.
5. Testing and Inspection: After installation is complete, the elevator will undergo thorough testing and inspection to ensure it meets safety and performance standards.
6. Training and Handover: Once the elevator is certified for operation, the installer will provide training on its use and maintenance and hand over the keys and documentation to the homeowner.
Conclusion Home elevators offer a myriad of benefits, from improved accessibility and convenience to enhanced property value and aesthetic appeal. By understanding the different types of home elevators, factors to consider when choosing the right lift for home, and the installation process involved, you can make an informed decision that meets your needs and budget. For the Romping and the Roaring- Part 2
My submission for Day 2 of @serpentfever's Inhuman Event!
Link to read on ffn.net (Recommended if you are on mobile or haven't read the first part yet)
Preview:
The hair on the back of her neck raised, sensing the hit a moment before it came, but by then it was too late to dodge, even with her quick reflexes.
Kai’s hand shoved into her chest, and she hit the ground hard. She gasped, more from shock than pain, and then her brother was darting past her, out the door.
She gazed after him, dazed. She had experienced her fair share of fights with her brother, but he had never hit her before. It hadn’t hurt bad- she knew the raw strength he could pack, and that he had been holding back immensely, but it still- it still made her heart race.
“Nya!” Jay yelped, running over to her. “Are you alright?”
“I-I’m fine,” she breathed, her voice shaking hard. She swallowed, trying to force out the tremor.
This hadn’t changed anything. She wasn’t afraid of her brother. Just a bit shocked, that was all. He hadn’t meant to do it, he had just lashed out out of frustration.
He would never hurt her on purpose.
He would never.

“Lloyd, come away from the door. It’s too cold outside.”
Lloyd looked back reluctantly at Nya’s call. Kai peered at him from over the large grocery bag he was carrying.
“She’s right, bud. The last thing we need is for someone to get sick. Medicine is pricey,” he added, frowning at the lightness of his wallet.
Zane carried in another bag beside him and pulled the door shut. Nya walked over to him, ruffling Lloyd’s hair as she passed. “How are we doing on cash?”
“We still got enough for a little while. But not a ton. I guess I underestimated all the stuff we would need.” He frowned, glancing around at their makeshift home, shivering as a chill tickled through the air. “We should’ve gotten more blankets. With winter coming, it’s going to be tough having no heat.”
“We should take turns sleeping with Lloyd. He’s like a little living furnace.”
Kai smirked. “Well, at least that’s one person we shouldn’t have to worry about. I thought he might be more vulnerable because of how small he is, but those dragon and oni genes really seem to be doing something for him.”
“Speaking of which,” Nya sighed, “he nearly set Cole on fire today.”
Kai winced. “Did we lose anything?”
“Just a blanket and part of a shirt.”
Kai shook his head, turning towards the boy. “Lloyd, what did I say about using fire breath indoors?”
Lloyd hardly seemed to hear, gekkering softly as he climbed up a support beam, flapping his wings a few times to propel him up to the rafters. Red eyes glowed eerily down at them, and Kai sighed.
“He’s only getting more restless the longer we’re in here,” Nya growled. “You don’t know what a pain he is when you’re gone.”
Kai crossed his arms over his chest. “It’s been two weeks. We can’t keep him in here forever.”
“We can’t stay here forever,” Cole grunted, looking up from the book he was reading. “We’re already running low on funds. We’re going to have to get jobs, somehow. And we can’t live in an abandoned warehouse for the rest of our lives- already, we’re struggling with the winter coming. Jay’s already got a cold. Sooner or later, one of us is going to freeze to death.”
Kai drummed his fingers along his thigh, turning his gaze to where the lab hybrid was snuggled on the floor in a pile of blankets, near the center of the building, where it was warmest. “How’s he doing?”
“He’s gonna be fine, it’s just a common cold. We’re just letting him sleep it off. But winter’s only just beginning. It’s only going to get worse from here on out.”
“Cole’s right,” Zane said. “We have to try something else.”
“We’re just a bunch of kids,” Nya snapped, her voice tight. “We have no idea what we’re doing.”
“Perhaps it’s time
 we start looking for help.”
Three wary gazes shifted to Zane.
Kai narrowed his eyes. “What do you mean by that? Everybody hates our skins. Who would help us?”
“We don’t know that for sure. Borg told us that the world had it out for us
but he also pretended to care about us when he was really just using us.”
“Are you suggesting we go to the police?!” Nya growled. “Do you want to die?”
“Borg lied about a lot of things. What if he was lying about this, too?”
“And what if he wasn’t?” Kai retorted. “That’s a huge risk, Zane. One we can’t afford to take.”
“It was only a suggestion.”
“I get where you’re coming from, Zane,” Cole sighed, “but they’re right. That’s a big risk, and if we’re chased out, we have nowhere to go this time.”
“So what do we-”
They were interrupted by a shrill shriek, and whipped around to see Jay jerking up into a sitting position, Lloyd half-slumped over his chest. “What are you doing here?”
“Lloyd, leave Jay alone, he’s resting,” Kai chastised, rushing over to scoop him off of Jay. Lloyd squirmed in his grip, and Kai sighed. “What is wrong with you today?”
“He’s got too much energy for this cramped little place,” Nya told him. “He’s gonna end up hurting someone if we don’t do something about it.”
“Take him outside,” Jay sniffed, “before he burns the whole place down. And besides, he’s the only one of us you guys haven’t let wander since we got here. How is this different from what Borg did to him his whole life?”
“We’re protecting him from Borg,” Kai growled sharply. “If it was up to Borg, he’d be dead right now. I think we’re doing a much better job.”
“I’m not saying we aren’t,” Jay corrected quickly, waving his hands. “But I thought we wanted to give him the freedom he never had.”
“It’s not that simple, Jay,” Nya sighed. “Lloyd’s wanted- we all are, but he’s got the most at risk. If he’s spotted by anyone from Borg- it’s dangerous, is what I’m trying to say.”
“Of course it is. But so is hiding in an abandoned building for the rest of our lives. So is having nothing but a quickly-dwindling stash of money to our name. So is sleeping in a cold building with no heat through the winter. So is keeping a frustrated, fire-breathing brat inside a flammable area for two weeks.”
Lloyd shot a plume of fire at his face, and Jay shrieked, ducking. “See? I told you!” “Nah, he’s just mad at you for calling him a brat,” Nya snickered.
Kai gritted his teeth, pushing Lloyd’s face to the side until he stopped. “Jay does have a point, though. Maybe it’s worth trying to take him out.”
“But Borg-”
“We’ll be really careful,” Kai told her. “I’ll make sure he’s ready, and on his best behavior. You plan out where we’re going to go.”
Cole frowned. “How many of us are going to be going?”
“Two, plus Lloyd, would be ideal. Any more would draw too much attention.”
“Three of us could still be risky,” Cole warned. “Everyone at Borg looking for us will know what we look like. Disguises can only go so far.”
“I don’t want to just send one person out with Lloyd, though. If things go south, we’re going to need to stall for a little bit until we can get away.”
Cole crossed his arms over his chest. “I’m not sure how much I like the odds of two of you against a whole legion of Borg associates.”
“We don’t know for sure there’ll be that many,” Zane reminded. “And it will take a while to call backup.”
“And besides,” Kai added, “I’m not planning on getting noticed. It’s just a precaution if we do.”
Everyone stared expectantly at Cole, who remained silent. Lloyd struggled in his arms, and Kai let him go. The boy bounded over to the badger hybrid, and gripped his leg, looking up pleadingly. Cole looked down at him, his forehead creasing. Closing his eyes, he let out a long sigh.
“Alright, Kai, but I really hope you know what you’re doing.”
---
Kai, in fact, did not know what he was doing.
The plan was so simple in his head- teach Lloyd to blend in by having him get used to disguises and showing him the proper behaviors. They had done a very similar thing every time they had taken Lloyd out on one of their outings, back when they had still been living at Borg Tower. How hard could it be, really?
As it turned out, very hard.
Nya had not been lying about his exuberance. He seemed determined to make every little thing difficult.
“Lloyd, just put on this hat! You’ve done it before, quit being stubborn now!”
Lloyd jerked away from the hat like it was some sort of disease, hissing and batting at it. When Kai tried to pull it over his head, the boy grabbed it in his teeth and started pulling.
“No, no, don’t rip it! Augh, why can’t you just do as you’re told!”
“How’s the training going?” Nya laughed.
Kai turned to glare at her, releasing the hat. “Fine, thank you.”
“Really? Because it looks like your pupil just got away
”
Kai jerked his head back. Lloyd had dragged the hat, by his teeth, across the room, and was now slipping himself under the slab of wood that they had used as a foundation for a bed, which was much too low to the floor for Kai to even dream of fitting under.
He scowled, walking over to where Lloyd had wedged himself into, and stuck his arm underneath it, praying that he didn’t lose any fingers.
Luckily, Lloyd didn’t seem to be in a biting mood, but Kai could feel him cringing back from his touch.
“Come on, Lloyd, just come out of there already-”
He stopped as he realized Nya was giggling. Shooting her a glare, he growled, “What’s so funny?”
“You think you’re gonna have him ready to go by the end of the week?”
“You see if I don’t. You’re gonna be sorry you ever doubted me.”
“Uh-huh. If that’s what you need to tell yourself, I suppose.”
---
“Brr,” Jay huffed, as he and Nya pushed the door shut. “The wind’s really picking up out there.”
“Hopefully it’s just a cold streak,” she agreed. “I don’t want it to be too cold if we’re bringing Lloyd out in a couple days.”
“You guys still on for that?”
“I think so. Kai says he’s making progress with him. I guess we’ll have to see.”
“Hey Nya, Jay,” Cole nodded at them. “You feeling better, bro?”
“Oh, a lot better. Good as new! I think it was just a little cold. I can go back to helping out, now.”
Zane sighed. “We were fortunate, this time. Let’s hope it stays that way.”
“Lloyd,” Nya called, pulling a package of gummy bears out of one of the shopping bags. “We got a surprise for you!”
She cast her gaze to the rafters, expecting him to come leaping down, but was surprised when she saw him wriggle out from where he was dozing beside Kai, instead.
She handed him the bag. “Don’t eat them all at once, okay? We’re a little tight on money right now, so you won’t be getting any more for a while.”
The smile he shot her was small, with no teeth, as he took the bag. “Thanks, Nya.”
She frowned at him. The last time she had brought him candy, he had basically been jumping off the walls with excitement, his tail swishing and ears twitching. Now, he was barely even smiling, and stood abruptly still.
Tugging at the seal, his brow furrowed as it didn’t open. When he didn’t immediately tear it open with his fangs, and instead handed it to her so she could open it for him, she knew something was definitely off.
“What’s wrong, Lloyd? Are you feeling alright? Aren’t you happy with it?”
“No, I want it!” he yelped, grabbing for the bag.
She frowned at him, snatching it away. “Why are you acting so weird?”
Lloyd’s ears drooped, his hands dropping to his side. “Kai told me to act like the humans so I could go outside. Did I do bad?”
Nya felt her heart squeeze. “Oh, no, honey, you didn’t do anything wrong. I
I’m just not used to seeing you like this.”
He looked up at her, red eyes hopeful. “I did it right? I acted good?”
Nya took a slow breath. “Yeah, I mean
Lloyd, what exactly did Kai tell you to do?”
Lloyd shrugged. “He said if I smile too much, people can see my fangs.” Peeling back his lips, he pointed to the sharp teeth, as if Nya needed a demonstration. “Seeh?”
“Yes, Lloyd, I see. But why do you need to hide your fangs in here?”
“Kai said I’m prat-practicing,” Lloyd told her matter-of-factly, looking immensely pleased with himself for pronouncing the long word. “So I can be good when we go outside!”
Nya’s stomach felt hard. “What other kinds of things did he tell you to do, Lloyd?”
“He teached me how to not wiggle my ears so much.” He pointed to his ears, making a point of holding them still. “And we talked a lot. He’s showing me to walk on my feet better too, which is kinda wobbly though, and not as fast as using my hands, too. But Kai said I’m doing better than I was! Hey, Nya,” he added, pointing at her face, “you’re doing that thing Kai told me not to do. I can see your fangs!”
Nya unclenched her teeth, working her jaw. “Thanks, bubs. I’m gonna go talk to Kai now, okay? You have some of your gummies.”
Turning to where her brother was slouched against the wall, paging through a magazine, she stormed over to him. He glanced up at her nonchalantly, and Nya felt a surge of frustration in her chest at how calm he was.
“What’s wrong?”
“Why have you been teaching that stuff to Lloyd, Kai? Why is he acting so
 weird?”
“You mean normal? It’s great, isn’t it? I gotta admit, it felt like an impossible task at the beginning of the week, but he’s reformed pretty quickly. I think he’s almost ready to go out!”
“It’s not great,” she growled. “You’ve completely changed who he is! There’s a difference between teaching him to stay low and to completely reforming him into human society!”
Kai eyed her testily. “I don’t see what the big deal is. What else were you expecting me to do?”
“I wanted you to hide him, not change his behavior! This isn’t him, Kai!”
“Relax, Nya, it’s just some minor modifications. He’s still our mischievous little brother!” “Really? Because he seemed much less feral to me.”
“Well, yeah! We can’t have him acting out in the middle of the city! I, for one, think this is an improvement. He hasn’t set anything on fire in days.”
“We’re not humans, Kai! We’re different than them, and that’s okay! He has to know that. He has to know what we are! We can’t just try to change him just because it’s what the world wants.”
“I don’t see anything wrong with being like the humans. They’ve gotten off alright, haven’t they? Meanwhile, we’ve spent our whole lives being cheated and used.”
“Just because something’s hard doesn’t mean we should just give up! I can’t believe you, don’t you care about your identity at all?” “I care about surviving. I’m trying to keep us safe! What’s a few little changes if it benefits us in the long run?”
“It might start as just some small changes, Kai, but eventually it’s going to snowball into something bigger.” She felt her voice catch in her throat. “I don’t want to teach him to hide who he is. I want him to be proud. He hasn’t done anything wrong! We left Borg to get away from that, didn’t we? So that we could start our own paths and be who we wanted to be?”
“You wanted to be homeless and poor?”
“Kai!”
“What? You’re upset with me for telling the truth? We ran away from Borg so we could live. It was out of necessity, not even a choice, really.”
“Borg was our captor. He lied to us our whole lives, made us believe he was the only one who cared when he couldn’t be bothered with us at all. If you’re seriously defending him right now-”
“I’m not defending him, of course I’m not!” Kai jumped to his feet, growling. “What kind of psychopath do you think I am? He tried to kill my baby brother! If you think I would be on his side after that-”
“But don’t you see, it’s more than just that! He was hurting all of us, for years. He was a bad person even before he decided to get rid of Lloyd. Now’s our chance to finally be free of all that. Now’s our chance to be ourselves, to-”
“To get captured again, according to you.”
“How could you say that? I want to protect everyone as much as you do, but I also think you are posing a threat to us by imposing on us the same rules Borg did-”
“How dare you compare me to him!” Kai roared. Nya flinched, and she felt the others turn their gazes on them. “I am nothing like that wretch, nothing, I want nothing more than to protect my family from him! I am doing what I must to keep us safe from him, to keep us as far away as possible. I am trying to avoid suspicion, and I don’t care about your sentimental values. I care about surviving!”
If it was anyone else, they would’ve backed down. Kai didn’t break out his roar at just any time, especially not on those he cared about. When he did, you knew he was seriously pissed. No one in their right minds would mess with him when he was mad.
But Nya was his sister, and her temper was just as hot. Although she might not have the strength of a lion behind her, or the fierceness of his roar, she wasn’t going to let her brother scare her.
“You are not protecting us, you are only restricting us, and the sooner you find out that you are just treating us like he did-”
The hair on the back of her neck raised, sensing the hit a moment before it came, but by then it was too late to dodge, even with her quick reflexes.
And, although she still believed she was in the right, she had provoked him a bit, if she was being honest.
He would never hurt her on purpose.
He
 he would never do that.
He would never.
He

“Nya?”
She blinked, realizing Jay was extending a hand to her. She took it, and let Jay pull her to her feet.
“Are you sure you’re okay? He didn’t hurt you, did he?”
“No!” she hissed fiercely, and Jay flinched. Gentler, she added, “I’m fine. Kai would never do that.”
Jay didn’t meet her gaze, only gripped her hand tighter.
“Where did he go?” she asked the others, after her breathing had returned to a somewhat normal state.
“Straight out the door,” Zane replied. “No one saw which way he went.”
Nya glanced around the room, stopping when she realized Kai wasn’t the only one missing. “Where’s Lloyd?”
Zane pointed quietly under one of their makeshift beds. A pair of red eyes glowed from underneath.
Nya crouched down, reaching her hand in. “We didn’t mean to scare you, Lloyd. Come on out, it’s alright now.”
Lloyd burrowed deeper under the bed. Nya sighed, giving up. She knew he would only come out when he was ready.
“Should I go after Kai?” Cole asked, frowning.
Zane shook his head. “I think it’s best to give him some space to blow off some steam.”
“I just hope he’s careful. If he’s too full of anger to pay attention to what he’s doing
”Jay’s tail drooped. “The last thing we need is for anyone to get spotted now.”
“We’re pretty far out here,” Cole assured him. “If we were closer to the city, I’d be worried, but Kai’d have to get pretty far to get anywhere within the distance I think the Borg employees would be searching.”
“I hope you’re right,” Nya sighed. “One day, his temper is going to get him- or one of us- into a situation he can’t get out of.”
---
The next couple days were incredibly tense. Kai came back a few hours later, not speaking to anyone and going straight to bed. He and Nya hardly spoke to each other, and when they did, their interactions were short and argumentative. The others were careful to stay out of it, not picking any sides. Kai had a feeling that they were pretty uncomfortable around him, though.
He hadn’t meant to hit Nya. She was his sister. Even though she was being stupid and sentimental, he still loved her and never would want to hurt her. But it wasn’t like he had seriously wounded her, either. It had just been a little scuffle. He knew that Nya knew that, and that she was only mad about the argument. The others, however
they were overreacting. He didn’t understand, after all their years together, how they could seriously think he would harm one of them.
That’s what the point of all of this was, wasn’t it? To protect them? Why couldn’t anyone else see that?
He was sick of all this. Sick of all the fighting, sick of struggling and hiding all the time. He just wished they could be normal.
Although Nya wanted anything but that, it seemed.
He understood what she was saying, in a sense- they were different. But was it really so bad to want to change who you were if it meant a life of peace and safety?
Kai just didn’t know anymore. He was tired of being the one who had to decide. He missed when they were younger, and Borg had made all the decisions for them.
Not that he wanted Borg to be in charge of them anymore- but the sentiment still stood.
But life had a way of being against them.
Wishes weren’t going to fix anything.
---
When the scheduled day for Lloyd’s venture into the town rolled around, the circumstances hadn’t improved much. They had originally planned for him and Nya to accompany Lloyd- a decision he was regretting now, with the tension still between them. He almost considered asking one of the others to take his place, but decided against it. He wanted to be there with Lloyd- he had been the one who had spent all the time training him, after all. And he didn’t dare ask Nya to change her mind about going- she would probably argue just for the sake of it, and it wasn’t worth the confrontation right now. Things were already bad enough as it was.
As they wrapped Lloyd up in his winter gear, he complied much more easily than usual, and three of them set out quietly.
“Where are we gonna go?” Kai asked Nya as they approached the bus stop.
“I was thinking we could go downtown, more towards where the little shops are. The people there are pretty nice, and it’s usually bustling, so it’ll be easy to blend in with the crowds.”
“How many stops down is that,” he frowned, fingering through the bills in his wallet.
Nya watched him anxiously. “Not too far. We can walk, if that’s better.”
“It’s fine.”
“Are you-” “I told you, it’s fine!” Nya jerked her gaze away sharply. “Excuse me for trying to be considerate, then.”
“Oh, don’t be like that. It’s too cold to walk.”
She narrowed her eyes at him. “I can’t tell if you’re trying to be caring or not.”
Kai growled. “Me neither.”
Lloyd squirmed by their feet, and Nya sighed. “Can we not do this, now?” She pointed down the street, to where the bus was rolling up. “The bus is here, anyway.”
Kai told the bus driver where they wanted to go, slipping him the proper payment, and the three of them piled on, taking a spot near the back, even though the bus was mostly empty. Kai knew, from his previous trips, that it would get more crowded the closer they got to town, and sitting in the back meant not many people would be looking at them.
Lloyd stared out the window for most of the ride, his wide eyes taking in the landscape rolling past. Kai watched too, and as the bus drove them deeper into the city, he saw the shining buildings, with trees and patches of greenery dispersed in between them. With winter arriving, most of the trees were skeletal, but some still had a spattering of leaves, coming in bright golds, soft reds, and blazing oranges. It wasn’t something Kai got to see often in his lifetime, in person, at least. The changing of the fall leaves was a very finicky and brief time of the year in Ninjago City, and he had been lucky if one of his outside visits fell during this time.
Deeper into the city, the buildings thickened, rows of homes filing in orderly lines. Blues, olives, tans, grays, whites- each one had its own unique charm, but they all felt like they belonged.
One house in particular caught his eye, though- one that stood out from all the rest. Its walls were a bright red, and the lawn was wildly overgrown. Too many chairs were crammed onto the small porch, paint chipping on the door. It was an eyesore compared to the rest of the neighborhood.
Being too unique was problematic, he supposed.
By now, they were getting into the thick of the city. Beautiful buildings soared above them, colorful graffiti decorated walls and bridges. Most noticeable of all, however, were the people. A father with his daughter sitting on his shoulders, an elderly couple each holding a hand of their grandson as they swung him between them. A young couple walking down the street, chatting, with their hands casually intertwined, a group of teenage boys, laughing and racing each other down the street on their skateboards.
Everyone had one thing in common- they looked happy, content, at peace.
Kai hoped they appreciated what they had.
For the first time since they had boarded the bus, he glanced over at Nya. She was staring out the window too, but her gaze wasn’t directed at the scenery beyond, like his, but instead at Lloyd’s reflection in the glass.
The bus screeched to a halt, arriving at their stop, and the three of them hopped out, thanking the driver.
Walking down the street, they found themselves in a charming little section of town, the shops modest but plentiful. Nya was right, there was plenty of activity to help hide them. All the footsteps and voices around him swamped Kai’s ears, and he shook his head, trying to press them flatter against his head. This was only a milder section of the city, he was going to have to get used to all the sounds of the urban environment if they were going to adapt to this place.
Kai wondered how Lloyd would be affected by the environment- the young boy had proven himself to have a strong sense of hearing as well, and had never been a fan of being swarmed.
But either Lloyd’s hat was muffling his senses, or he was simply too enamored by the shops to care. With every shop they went in- from t-shirts, to souvenirs, antiques, jewelry, fabrics, and a bakery, Lloyd always seemed to find some little shiny trinket or another. They couldn’t buy him much, but Lloyd seemed perfectly content with just looking, already moving onto the next object of interest within a minute or two, anyway.
They did actually make a purchase at the confectionary, though, letting Lloyd pick out a piece of candy. He had gone with a rainbow lollipop, a purchase Kai was pleased with, because it would actually last him a while, giving him and Nya time to pick up a few more essentials before heading back to the warehouse.
Emphasis on few.
“We don’t really need the new jacket, I know we have a needle and thread I can use to patch it up on my own.”
“Yeah, well what about all those protein bars, do you really need all those?” Kai asked, raising an eyebrow at her.
“They’re a good source of nutrients!” “Yeah, and they’re expensive. There’s gotta be a generic brand one you can get for cheaper.”
“These are the only ones I can get Lloyd to eat.”
“Well, he’s going to have to learn to adapt to our budget-”
“Buy them with this!” Lloyd purred, slipping a stack of bills into his hand.
Kai and Nya froze, slowly turning to look at him.
“Lloyd,” he asked slowly, “where did you get this?”
“I found it.”
No duh, Kai bit back. “Found it where?”
“Someone left it. At the store.”
“Lloyd!” Nya cried, sounding close to hysterics. “You can’t just take people’s money! You can’t take any of people’s things without permission. That’s stealing!” “They left it there,” Lloyd grumbled, kicking his foot. “I thought they were done with it. They should be more careful with their things. I’m careful with my things.”
Kai snorted a laugh, and Nya stared at him incredulously. “You can’t seriously think this is funny? He stole!”
“Oh, come on, Nya, he didn’t do it on purpose.”
“It’s still a crime.”
“He’s four!” “Doesn’t mean you should encourage him.”
“I wasn’t. In case you’re forgetting, he was the one who took it, not me.”
“But you don’t care.”
“I never said that!” “I’m your sister, I can tell.”
“Alright, alright, so maybe I wouldn’t mind a little extra cash. So what? We need it. Probably more than whoever was foolish enough to lose this.” “Kai! I can’t believe you!” “What? It’s not like we even know where to take it! Lloyd,” he turned to the boy, his voice sharp. “Where did you find the money? Which store?”
Lloyd was looking significantly less cheerful now, his eyes wary as he took a step back from them. “I dunno. Can’t remember.”
“See?” Kai snapped at Nya. “We couldn’t return it if we wanted to!” “So you’re just going to pocket it?”
“Where else would you have me take it? Like I told you, we need it more than the rich, privileged people around here.” Blood was roaring in Kai’s ears now, his breath coming in heavy pants. Why was there so much noise buzzing in his ears? There were people, so many people, and all that noise, mixing with his frustration, was making his heart slam against his chest in a dizzying rage.
“Just because they have more than us doesn’t make it right.”
“It makes it understandable.”
“I can’t believe we’re back to this again!”
“Back to what?”
“You’re trying to change Lloyd’s behavior again! I told you it would escalate- in only a few days, you’ve gone from having him hide his goofball side, to make him think stealing is okay, just because we’re in a rough patch!”
“You think I want to do this? I know it’s wrong! But sometimes an opportunity presents itself, and you gotta do what you gotta do.”
“We can’t just throw our values and everything about ourselves out the window just because things are difficult right now, Kai.”
“We haven’t really been given much choice, have we? In another week or two, we’ll have gone completely bankrupt, then what are we gonna do, huh?”
Nya paused for a moment, her breath hitching. “We’ll
we’ll figure something out. But this isn’t the answer.”
“Oh yeah? Let me know when you find one.” Turning away from her, he slipped the cash into his pocket. Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. He was starting to feel lightheaded, now. He needed to end this.
“Kai, please, the last thing we need is another charge on our backs.”
“Going back to the shop to return this- even if we knew which shop to go to- would only put more suspicion on our backs. If we keep it, no one will probably ever even notice it’s missing.”
“But they could have security footage-” Nya stopped dead, the color draining from her cheeks.
“What?”
“Where’s Lloyd?”
---
Lloyd was running.
Ducking and weaving between the people roaming the streets, he tried his best to avoid running into them, but once or twice, his hand brushed against them, and he flinched away, hating the way the unfamiliar touch felt on his skin.
There were too many people here. He hated this feeling, being crowded around on all sides, like he couldn’t breathe. He just wanted to get out of here.
That was pretty impossible, though, when he had no idea where he was.
He shouldn’t have run off. Kai and Nya were going to be furious.
But
he just hadn’t been able to take it anymore.
He had been so happy when he had first brought them the money. He had thought he was helping, and that now they would be able to get more stuff and stop looking so worried all the time. But it had only made them start fighting again. Their raised voices had rung loud in his ears, too loud, and their smoldering gazes had scared him. That hadn’t been Kai and Nya- the big siblings he knew and loved. That had been something different, something Lloyd didn’t like one bit.
He hated it, every time they fought- every time the ugly side of them came out. But this time had been so much worse, because this time it was his fault, it had been him who messed things up by taking something he wasn’t supposed to.
He had just wanted to make them proud.
But maybe they would be better off without him.
He just wanted things to be the way they used to be, back when no one had fought or yelled at each other, when everyone had been happy, hanging out in their fun little room, giving him badger rides and letting him pick whatever movie he wanted.
But that had also been the time when he had spent his nights locked up alone, when strange people in long coats and scary masks would poke and prod him, and he wanted nothing more but to see his family again, but Dr. Borg wouldn’t let him.
But that was the way things had always been, hadn’t they? There was no perfect world.
At least not for monsters, like Lloyd.
Lloyd stumbled, his head reeling. All these thoughts were a little too much to take in.
Glancing around, he spotted an alleyway leading off of the streets. The perfect opportunity to get away from all the noises and people and clear his head.
Nearly crying in relief, he slipped into the comfort of the darkness.
---
“He was just here!” “Oh no, he must’ve run off again! You know how upset he gets when we fight!”
“Shit,” Kai muttered, his bubbling anger quickly giving way to panic. “He must’ve gone to look for somewhere to hide.”
“Dammit, he could be anywhere by now,” Nya whimpered, pressing her fingers to her temples. “This is all our fault!”
His frustration with her dying, Kai put a hand on her shoulder. “Don’t worry, we’ll find him. He can’t have gotten far, I should be able to pick up his scent.”
Nya glanced around, surveying their surroundings. “Just try to be subtle about it. There are a lot of people here.”
It was harder to track Lloyd’s scent without getting down to the ground, and the many other crisscrossing scents in the area added to the complexity, but, luckily for them, Lloyd’s oni and dragon blood made for a distinctive tang that Kai was able to pick up on after only a minute, despite all the distractions.
They followed the trail for a few minutes, Nya hovering behind him anxiously as he went. After a while, Kai was starting to get worried he had somehow made a mistake, when they reached a busy market street.
Shaking his head, he pushed his way into the throng.
Immediately, he was overwhelmed with at least a dozen more scents, and he lost Lloyd’s for a moment. Desperately trying to pick it up again, Kai felt like he was floundering, all the scents and sounds making him stumble.
Nya grabbed his shoulder, steadying him. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m
 fine, it’s just
there’s a lot of people here.” He put a hand on his head. “It’s a lot.”
“Can you still smell Lloyd?”
“I don’t know.”
Nya turned to a shopping bag she was holding, rummaging through it until she found what she was looking for and pulled it out. Popping the cap, she handed him the bottle of water. “Here. This might help.”
Downing a few sips of the cold, fresh, liquid, Kai felt his heart rate slow slightly, the fog in his brain dissipating a bit. “Thanks, Nya.”
Turning back to his surroundings, he searched for Lloyd’s scent again. This time, he caught it rather quickly, and the two of them hurried down the street a little ways, until it led to a dark alleyway.
Kai slowed his pace, his steps wary. “Lloyd? Are you here?”
There was silence, for a moment, then a soft whimper replied him. Kai froze. “Lloyd?”
Nya pushed in front of him, and Kai caught sight of his sister’s pupils dilating to her night vision.
“See anything?”
Nya didn’t respond, and Kai blinked rapidly, urging his eyes to adjust to the dim lighting. When he could finally see better, he looked over at her. Nya was standing frozen, her face white, as she stared down the alley.
Kai followed her gaze, and promptly felt his stomach lurch.
Although he couldn’t see nearly as well as Nya in the dark setting, it was well enough to identify the figure curled up in the back of the alley as Lloyd, pale and quivering as he grimaced at his leg, stretched out at an ugly looking angle, all twisted and bloody.
“Lloyd!” Nya screamed, running towards him as Kai gagged, trying hard not to puke at the scene. He tried to shake action back into his limbs, beginning to follow Nya where she was crouched over at Lloyd’s side, crying softly-
Kai froze, scenting the air. The overwhelming reek of blood and pain filled his nose, and he was still left muddled from the chaos of the busy market a moment ago, but

Over all of that, he swore he could smell something else, something that seemed important.
“Nya, do you
 do you smell that?”
“What?” Nya choked, wiping at her eyes. “Kai, he’s
it’s bad, come help me!” Kai was about to abandon the mysterious scent, when all of a sudden, it clicked.
Cold dread trickled down his spine. “Nya, look out, it’s-”
His words were cut off as something slammed against him, sending him to the ground, winded. Nets were thrown over him, and he felt strong yanks on his arms and legs as sharp rope dug into his wrists and ankles.
Blinding panic crashed through him as the full implication of what was happening hit him. No, no no, he couldn’t get captured, he couldn’t be brought back there, Lloyd couldn’t be brought back there, they would-
Kai threw back his head and roared as loudly as he could, hoping that someone, anyone would hear and come save him-
Sharp metal clashed against his jaw, sending spikes of agony through him as something was wrestled around his head. He tried to cry out again, but realized that he couldn’t move his mouth anymore, the metal device jamming it shut.
He could hear Nya’s screams from somewhere behind him, which abruptly cut off as she met his same fate. Muzzles, he realized with horror, the image of Lloyd, chained in that little room on that day they had first escaped flashing through his head.
Borg had found them. And now they were going to pay.

Chapter 8
Stark Spangled Banner Masterlist // Main Masterlist
Tumblr media
Steve was sat on his couch when Katie called him later that evening. Smiling he accepted the video call and she beamed at him.
“Hey, Soldier. Am I glad to see your face.” “You’ve only been gone a few hours.” He chuckled.
“Seven, actually.” She pouted “Jerk.” He grinned. “Seven too long, Doll. How’s it going?” “Its okay. We’re heading out tomorrow to speak to a professor I took some advice from when Thor was first on Earth. He’s based in Seville so not too far away.” “Tour of Europe, nice.” “Be nicer if you were here.”
“Wish I was. The team ok?” He asked, leaning back to get comfy as he held the phone up so he could see her.
“Well I know all of them bar one.” Katie rubbed her temple. “And like all of them bar one.”
Steve laughed “They made a good first impression then?” “Oh, it’s not the one I don’t know that I don’t like.” she paused, before letting out a groan and wrinkling up her freckle spattered nose “Fucking Ward is here.” Steve frowned and sat up straight, swallowing the anger rising from his chest. “What?” “Yeah, apparently his post was one with Coulson’s mobile team. Go figure.” “Son of a
” Now Steve was mad, really mad. First off Fury had sprung Coulson on his girl, and now this. He looked at her as she shook her head, shrugging.
“Nothing I can do about it.”
“You could always come home.” he suggested, even though he knew she wouldn’t.
“I’m involved now. Might as well see it through. And as much of a dickhead he is, he’s a good agent so
” “I’m not sure I like you being cooped up in so close proximity to him.” Steve sighed, and as her eyes narrowed, he instantly knew he’d said the wrong thing.
“What’s that supposed to mean? Don’t you trust me?” “Of course I do.” He placated, cursing himself. And he did. He trusted her implicitly. “It’s him I don’t trust. I hate how much he upset you and I don’t like him.”
Katie laughed at his somewhat childish answer and he was pleased to see the anger in her face dissipating. “In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m over him now.” “I wish I was over you.” Steve smirked and she gave an overly dramatic shocked gasp.
“Captain Badass! How rude!” He laughed and then sighed. “But I mean it. If he steps a toe outta line, I’ll be on a jet straight over to break his nose, again.”
Katie smirked “You didn’t break it last time, that was Tony remember?”
“How could I forget?” The corner of his mouth curled up in a smirk as he remembered that specific evening.
They’d were at a bar, Tony was in town and Lawson’s band had been playing so they had gone out for a few beers. And then Ward had shown up, again. Steve and Katie had spent most of the night trying to keep Tony calm and away from him, and now by some sick twist of fate Steve, unfortunately, found himself next to Ward at the bar as he waited to get another round of drinks in whilst Tony and Natasha were at a table by the dance floor. Ward was watching Katie whilst she danced with Clint as the archer twirled her effortlessly round the floor as the post-band DJ continued to play. Steve didn’t miss the way her ex boy-friend’s eyes travelled down her body and backup again and he felt himself bristle as he watched the man, blatantly ogling his girl. It wasn’t a completely alien thing for him to experience, she turned heads wherever they went, but the fact it was her ex riled him big time, especially as this man had treat her like shit, made her feel worthless.
Steve hated him for that.
Ward glanced up and at least had the grace to look a little sheepish at being caught.
“Sorry Captain it’s just, well, you have a hell of a woman there.”
Steve looked at the man, his voice low and emotionless. “I know.”
“Biggest regret I have is how I treated her.” Ward sighed, taking a drink from his glass. “I was a jerk.”
“No arguments here.” Steve muttered, a bit louder than he had intended as the bar tender approached with his order. Steve paid and picked up his bottle to take a swig whilst waiting for his change, only to find Ward talking to him again.
“She was a demon in the sack too, as you’ll know.” Ward sniffed, looking straight ahead, a smirk on his face. Steve paused, bottle raised to his mouth. Was this asshole actually going there?
“I’ve no idea why I went looking elsewhere.” He continued, before he turned to look at Steve, “The things she can do with her mouth and-“
“That’s enough.” Steve’s voice was loaded with anger as he slammed the bottle down on the counter causing it to shatter, sending its contents flying over the surface along with shards of glass as he turned his head to look at Ward, ignoring the bar tenders squeak of shock. As Steve stood up straight and glared at the man, who was an inch or so shorter than he was, he knew he’d risen to the ridiculous goading and given Ward the reaction he wanted, but right now what he wanted was to smash the fucker’s face straight down into the pool of beer that was gathered on the surface below and watch as his nose broke.
But he didn’t get chance, as at that moment a whirlwind dressed in a grey blazer and dark jeans flew in between them both and suddenly Ward was on the floor.
Tony had punched him straight in the face.
“Man I’ve been waiting to do that for years.” Tony spoke simply, shaking out his fist as he glanced down at Ward.
“You broke my nose!” Ward’s voice was nasaly as he stood up, shrugging off Rollins who had helped him to his feet. “Yeah well you broke my sister’s heart.” Tony snarled back as Natasha stepped in front of him, both hands on her chest pushing him away. “Sue me.”
“What is going on?” A loud voice said to their side and all three men turned to see Katie stood there, Clint at her side, a blank expression on her face as her eyes locked onto Tony’s.
“Your brother just punched me.” Ward wiped at his bloodied face.
“Yeah I saw that.” She said, her eyes still on Tony “Why?”
“Because he’s a dick.” Tony sniffed simply. “And he was picking a fight with Spangles. Thought I’d get in there first.”
Katie looked at Steve who gave her a raise of his eyebrows in confirmation before she tuned to look at Tony again.
“You were protecting Captain America.” Katie’s lips twitched slightly as Tony wrinkled his nose and popped his shoulder.
“Yeah, that and I just really wanted to hit him.” “Come on guys.” The bar tender said lightly “I don’t want to have to ask any of you to leave
”
“You never did like me, did you Tony?” Ward wiped again at his nose, spatters of blood landing all over his shirt.
“No.” Tony deadpanned simply, picking at something on his sleeve.
“Time to go, Ward.” Rollins pat Ward’s chest and Ward shot one last look at the group before turning to go.
“Okay, nothing to see here
move it a long!” Clint clapped his hands together as the crowd that had gathered dissipated and the volume level of the bar returned to normal.
“Has he gone?” Tony asked, not looking around.
“Yeah.” Steve nodded.
“Good, because
fuck me!” Tony groaned, shaking out his right hand. “That hurt.” “Let me see.” Natasha turned to Tony as Clint announced that the fact Ward had his nose splattered across his face called for a celebratory round of chasers, turning to the bar.
Steve stepped towards his girl and gently placed a hand in the small of her back and she turned to look at him, breaking her gaze from the door Ward had left through.
“So what did he say to you to make you lose it?” She asked..
“I didn’t lose it, Tony was the one that punched him.” Steve protested and Katie arched her eyebrow.
“Oh, and did Tony smash that bottle all over the bar?” “You saw that?” Steve grimaced, peeking up at her a little, sheepishly.
She nodded. “What did he say?”
“It doesn’t matter”
“Let me guess, ‘she was amazing in bed
’” Katie mimicked a deep voice. “’She can do amazing things with her hands
mouth
pick a hole’” Steve flushed bright red, which was answer in itself as she shook her head.
“So predictable.” Katie scoffed, her eyes not once leaving Steve’s “You know he was doing it on purpose, to get a rise out of you. And it worked.”
“Yeah, I know.” Steve sighed, reaching out and gently grabbing her hips, pulling her to him. “I just, well I didn’t like him talking about you like that, I wouldn’t like anyone talking about you like that.” He saw Katie’s mouth twitch at the side as her hands gently wrapped around his upper arms. ”My hero.”
He let out a huff of a laugh and was about to, once again, point out that it was Tony who had landed the blow when the Inventor reminded them himself.
“Jesus you are a sadist!” Tony pulled his hand away from where Nat had pressed a towel wrapped around a load of ice to his knuckles.
“Quite being a baby, Shell Head.” She said airily as Tony glared at her, holding his hand to his chest.
“To be fair to Tony,” Steve said, grinning at the memory as he looked at the screen of his StarkPhone, “it was a pretty good punch.” Katie sniggered and looked up as Steve heard a knock on her door. “Yeah?” A voice from off screen spoke. “Hey, we’re meeting for some food and a few beers if you wanna
” “Yeah I’ll be with you in a sec.” “Are you talking to him?” The voice gained pitch and Steve arched an eyebrow letting out a soft sigh.
Katie laughed. “Yeah, hey Stevie
you got a fan.” She winked as she looked at him, before she turned the phone round and Steve saw a small woman, leaning in the doorway her long, dark hair tucked behind her ears. He rubbed his neck slightly embarrassed and waved.
“Hi
” “Skye, Steve, Steve, Skye.” “Nice to meet you Skye, well, talk to you.” He smiled politely. “You too Cap.” She grinned as Katie turned the phone round. “I’ll see you down there.”
Katie nodded as she shut the door.
“That was the newbie.” She said to Steve who smiled at her. “She seems nice.” Steve nodded. “I’ll let you go get some food, I know how you get when you don’t eat.”
“Oh hello kettle, this is Steve Rogers here. You’re black”  Her sarcasm made him laugh loudly. “You’re the king of hanger.” “And that makes you the queen of hanger by default so
”
“Smart ass.” She shot after a little pause. “I better go, I’ll message you later.”
“Love you.” He smiled at her. “Love you too.” She said, before adding with a sarcastic grin. “My king
”
***** Katie had no idea where the food came from but she didn’t care. A big, greasy bacon cheeseburger with a side of loaded fries really hit the spot, especially alongside a large glass of Aviation gin.
As they ate they talked and Fitz, who was bouncing on his chair eventually lost his composure and leant forward.
“So
I’m sorry
and May told me not to ask but I have to
what’s it like dating Captain America?” Katie gave a huff as she swallowed down her food. “I wouldn’t know. I’m dating Steve Rogers.”
"I’m sorry
I didn’t mean to
”  Fitz stuttered as May threw him a filthy look whilst Simmons hit him on the arm.
“It’s fine, don’t worry.” She smiled “I just
well, there’s far more to him than the shield and the stars and stripes. He’s the kindest, gentlest, sweetest guy I’ve ever met and he treats me like a Queen.”
Ward shifted in his seat and whilst Katie didn’t look at him, the movement didn’t go unnoticed.
“But, isn’t he like, dead old fashioned?” Skye asked. “Being like nearly a hundred.” “In some ways.” Katie shrugged. “I mean he has a few little quirks, but he’s adapted quite well all things considered”
“How is he?” Coulson asked “I mean, I’ve not seen him since
well, I died.” “He’s good.” Katie smiled. “He’s fit right in to SHIELD and he’s happy, we’re happy.”
“Oh that’s so sweet!” Simmons gushed.
“An Avengers love story.” Fitz sighed. “Man, wish I could be an Avenger.”
"What would your super power be?” Ward snorted, knocking back his scotch “Boring everyone to death with algorithms?” “You do know that there’s only actually three out of the seven of us that has a super power or enhancement.” Katie said simply, shooting Ward a glare before she turned to Fitz “Steve, Dr Banner and Thor. The rest of us rely on training or technology.” “So you’re saying I have a chance?” Fitz grinned causing the rest of the table to laugh or snort.
“Never give up on your dreams.”  Katie deadpanned, causing the table to laugh.
They continued chatting and attacked more of their food before Skye continued with the questioning.
“What was AC like as an SO?” she asked. Coulson groaned and Katie laughed, swallowing the rest of her burger.
“He was the best.” she smirked, “although to be fair, once I started training as a Field Op, my real SO was Hawkeye.” “Now HE is dreamy.” Simmons sighed. “All dark and broody and arrowy.” “Arrowy?” Skye snorted. “That isn’t even a word.”
“He’ll love that!” Katie laughed, shaking her head and making a mental note to tell him. “Arrowy
”
Coulson stood up, gesturing round the table as people had finished drinks and he headed to the bar to get more, Fitz and Ward following to help.
“So how did you end up joining SHIELD?” Katie looked at Skye.
“I hacked them.” She shrugged “I was trailing some guy who had taken some extremis serum and blew their cover.”
“You’d get on very well with my brother.” Katie snorted “He hacks SHIELD for fun.” “Still?” Coulson asked as he placed another drink down in front of her.
She nodded “Much to Fury’s annoyance.”
She trailed off slightly as she remembered the last time Tony had hacked SHIELD. He’d discovered something that she really wished he hadn’t. SHIELD were conducting experiments on the recovered Chitauri weapons. It had pissed her, Steve and Tony off no end and made her extremely glad the Tesseract had gone back to Asgard with Thor. Meddling with things they didn’t understand never did any good. But more so it was the fact that Fury had declared it was all being destroyed upon recovery. Another lie the Director had spun. And she was getting tired of them. Real tired.
Shaking the thought off she turned her attention to Coulson who was now talking about the task in hand tomorrow. The team came up with a plan about who was going where and when, and then Katie decided she’d had enough. She stood up, bidding the team goodnight.
***** The university was a short drive away from where they had set The Bus down. Coulson drove in his beloved red sports car, Lola. When they arrived they easily navigated their way through to Elliot’s office. As they reached his office door, it swung outwards and Coulson held it open. “I’ll see you later.” Elliot was saying to a dark haired, female student who exited the office with a pile of paper and books clutched in her arm. Elliot looked up, saw them standing there and let out a small exclamation of surprise.
“Oh
”
“Professor Randolph.” Coulson smiled, shaking his hand.
“Agent Coulson, Agent Stark”
“Good to see you again.” Katie also took his hand when he offered it.
“Well I never, come in, come in.” “Waterfield 44.” Phil said suddenly, and Katie looked at him frowning. It was only when Elliot looked down at the pen in his hand, holding it out for Coulson to take that she realised what he was talking about. “14-Karat gold nib with mother of pearl inlay.” Coulson turned the pen over in his hand before offering it back.
Katie bit back a snort, it sounded like something Tony would own, but she wasn’t quite sure what the deal with the pen was. “That’s quite an eye you’ve got. I didn’t know you were a collector.” Professor Randalph laughed.
“On my wages?” Coulson snorted. “I wish.” “Well,” Elliot took the pen back and tucked it in his pocket before looking at them. “I’m assuming you found something on the ground in London.”
“In a tree in Norway.” Coulson added, placing the case containing the printed rod that Fitz had made on the desk, opening it.  ”And unfortunately we weren’t the ones who found it.” Katie added “It’s a 3-D model” Couslon handed the item to Elliot who took it, examining it closely. “Oh, that is amazing.” He turned away from them and put the rods symbols under a light to look at them better. “Now, based on these runes,” he muttered, still looking at it, “I’d say I’m looking at a piece of  Berserker Staff.”
Katie smiled as her and Coulson exchanged a look.
“But I think you already know that.”  Elliot looked up as he set the rod down.
“Suspected.” Katie smiled. “My knowledge on it is sketchy, and there are many different theories about it so
”
The Professor stood up and walked over to pull a book off his shelf “Here.” He set the book on the desk and Katie and Coulson looked down at a drawing of a man holding the rod up high over his head, the rod in the book was considerably bigger than the one that was taken out of the tree.  Katie started to read the book as Elliot continued to explain. “The man in question was a solider in the Berserker Army” Professor Randalph spoke “Berserker Army?” Coulson asked “Oh, yeah. A powerful army. Fierce army” Elliot spoke “Berserkers battled like raging beasts, destroying everything in their path. A single Berserker had the strength of 20 warriors”. “So whoever wielded the staff got superhuman strength?” Coulson asked “Fighting with it put the warrior into a state of uncontrollable rage.” He replied, picking up the rod and showing it to Coulson.  “The staff contained a very powerful magic”. “The warrior in the story?” Coulson pressed as Katie continued to read, frowning as she spotted something pretty interesting. “He came to Earth to fight,” Elliot said “But he ended up falling in love.”
“With whom?” Coulson asked “With life, on Earth. Humanity” Professor Randalph shrugged   “He fell so much in love that when his army returned to Asgard, he stayed behind.”
“And the staff? He broke it?”
Professor Randalph nodded. “He didn’t want its dark magic falling into the wrong hands. So, according to legend he broke it into three pieces and hid each one in a different location.”  “That manuscript wouldn’t happen to say where he hid them, would it?” Coulson asked. “Actually, it does.” Katie spoke, and placed the book down on the desk, pointing at it, smiling. “In three verses.”
“Now, let’s all bear in mind these are poetic abstracts from long-lost ancient texts.”  Elliot said as Katie cleared her throat and began to read.
“So, there is one about a tree, which they’ve found it seems. Another is ‘East of the river, sun overhead, buried in Earth with the bones of the dead.”’
“That’s a bit macabre, isn’t it?” Randalph said, folding his arms as he smiled.
“There’s another one here.” she continued “Well, this one doesn’t even have a rhyme. But the gist of it is “close to God.” That could be anything, couldn’t it?” “Yeah, I was hoping for less metaphor, more longitude and latitude” Coulson sighed. “Well, maybe we should start looking at areas and places located near Viking raid routes” Katie said, an idea coming to her “Being Norse and all
”
“There have been some recent interesting findings of Norse relics on Baffin Island off the coast of Canada” Randalph shrugged “Yeah, a virtual treasure trove of new artefacts.”
“Well, we’ll check it out. Thank you for your time Professor.” Coulson said, reaching out to shake his hand.
“So AC, Baffin Island?” Katie asked as they climbed back into Lola.
“Did you know there’s a Mount Thor on Baffin Island?” Coulson started up the car as Katie shut the passenger door.
“Really?” “Yeah, and do you know what’s not on Mount Thor?” Coulson continued. “Anything Asgardian. At all. Our agents on the ground combed over it when all these Norse relics turned up. Didn’t find a thing.”
***** “So like you’re a Mission Analyst.” Skye looked at Katie, across the table of the Planning Room
“Yeah”
“And a sniper with STRIKE?”
“Yeah.”
“And you’re also an Avenger
”
“Yeah.” Katie muttered, not looking up from the screen she was studying, “Although what we’re avenging now that Coulson isn’t actually dead I don’t know.” She peered closer at the screen and moved the map 180 degrees using her hand.
“Pretty intense.” Skye nodded.
“Yeah it can be.” Katie was still staring at the map. She’d been running an analysis on the Viking Routes in Europe and she was missing something. But she couldn’t think what. And then one highlighted on the map in yellow caught her eye. She tapped in closer, and frowned. “Now that’s interesting.”
She thought for a moment, and then ran another quick search on something, her mind working ten to the dozen.
“What have we got?” Coulson asked as he walked into the room with Ward. Katie looked up and was about to speak but Skye beat her to it.
"Nystorm’s deep-web message boards are just abuzz with psychos”
She moved her hand over the screen so that it activated the hologram display functionality in the middle of the table, various messages scrolling across the bottom part. “They believe they’re gonna ascend to be the Gods of destruction and death. People suck, sir.” “That’s your progress, “people suck”?” Ward looked at her, his eyebrows raised slightly. Katie felt the corner of her mouth twitch up slightly. “These people do.” Skye insisted “And there’s also chatter about going underground.”
“Could be going incognito or – “ Ward started “ Or searching for the next piece.” Coulson turned to Katie “You said about checking Viking routes. Find anything?” “Matter of fact I did.” She tapped the screen to send the map to the holoview. “There are some sites along the Volga River in Russia, some in Kiev, and weirdly, right here.” She moved her hand once more, zooming into show a map of Seville.
“Here? In Seville, Spain?” Coulson frowned. “It’s a long shot, but Vikings ransacked Seville twice.” Katie nodded. “Or so the history books tell us.” At that point the search she was running stopped and something else flashed up in the corner of the screen.
“There.” Katie enlarged it. “That’s a promising location. Viking Relics found at El Divino Nino, a church would you believe it. ”
“Built on the ruins of an eighth century crypt.” Agent May added as she walked into the room. “It’s a tourist attraction.” She explained as everyone turned to look at her.
“Which in turn was built on Roman ruins from 206 B.C.” Katie read the details off the screen. “It’s East of a river.” Ward hummed, leaning on the back of Katie’s chair to look at the map over her shoulder..
“Crypt could be underground.” Sky offered.
“And lots of bones.” Katie concluded.
Coulson nodded “Okay, let’s see what we can dig up.” He smiled. “See what I did there?”
“I’m glad dying and rising again didn’t change your sense of humour AC.” Katie grinned at him. “It’s still crap.” *****
“Must be nice, have a mandatory nap time” Fitz sighed wistfully, looking out of the van. Katie, Coulson and Fitz were providing support up top, whilst Skye and Ward investigated the crypts.  It was the middle of the day, there wasn’t a soul in sight.
“Siesta isn’t mandatory, just very pleasant” Coulson replied, before he spoke into the coms device. “How you doing, Agent Ward?”
“Wishing I was shorter.” His voice responded. “Nothing yet. All my readings are normal”
“What about you Skye? Any luck?
“I’m lucky Ward volunteered to take the super creepy hallways instead of the slightly less creepy dungeon room place.” Sky responded.
At that point the tablet that Fitz was holding pinged and all three of them shifted to look at it.
“I got nothing. Sorry, nada.” Sky continued. “Ward,” Fitz’s spoke, looking down at the tablet. “Your spectrograph is reading something near you.” “ I don’t see anything.” “Well, it’s right in front of you. Oh, wait. No. Uh, okay, hold on. It’s moving – northwest”
The three of them watched the dot on the screen.
There was a pause and then suddenly Ward responded, his voice now excited.
“Visual Contact.”
“Ward, turn left.” Fitz followed the dot on the screen, calling out the directions.
After a moment or so they heard another voice that wasn’t Ward, before he finally spoke again.
“Yeah, I just ran into some unexpected
”
But he trailed off. The three of them sat up straight as they heard some kind of strange, low rumbling noise and then there was a groan of pain, a grunt and silence.
“Ward, what’s happening?” Coulson asked as, Fitz let out a groan. “His device just went down” Fitz tilted the tablet so they could all see it.
“Skye can you get
” Coulson started to say but he was cut off by her reply “Already on it.”
There were a few moments of silence, where Katie nervously nibbled on her lip. She hated this, not knowing what was going on was always the shittest bit of not being in the middle of the action.
“Somethings wrong with Agent Ward.” Skye replied a few minutes later. “The staff’s gone, someone took it.”
“Shit.” Katie groaned as Coulson looked at her, then to Fitz, before he stepped out of the SUV, Katie following.
“He can’t just disappear.” Coulson said, turning in the street “He’ll have to turn up some –“
Then they heard someone yelling from behind them and a loud whishing noise.
“Where
” Coulson finished as they both turned round to see a car being tossed into the street, landing on its roof.
“There we go. A block South of the Church.” Fitz spoke in their ears.
The pair of them started in that direction, running across the street. As they rounded the corner they spotted Professor Randalph who was picking books up and putting them back inside his bag. Katie exchanged a glance with Coulson and he shrugged at her before the pair of them strode over to where the Professor was stooped. He glanced up at them and then sighed, sitting down hard on the pavement.
“Professor.” Coulson stated as Katie folded her arms
“I screwed up.” Professor Randalph said simply.
***** “One of my men is hurt, the staff is gone.” Coulson spoke, sitting at the table opposite Elliot as Katie and Agent May watched from Coulson’s office. “I didn’t want any of that to happen.” The professor sighed.
“What did you want?” Coulson asked “The staff’s power for yourself?”
“Nothing like that.” Elliot shook his head earnestly “You know, I just wanted to be the first to study it. To prove that the Berserkers were actually here, a part of history. You think about that.” “ Oh, I’m thinking about it.” Coulson replied. “How’d they find it?” “I have no idea.” Elliot laughed “They may have the original texts. I wasn’t involved. You know, it was just a chance to uncover something that the Gods brought down from the heavens. “Aliens brought it. From space” Coulson said and Katie smiled as she thought about how Thor would respond to being called a mere alien. “I’ve spent some one-on-one time with aliens before. Didn’t work out too well.”
“Understatement of the century.” Katie muttered, drawing a glimmer of a smirk from May.
“So cases like this are personal to me.” Coulson concluded. “That’s all I know” Elliot, placed his hands flat on the table and sighed. Coulson stood up and made his way to the door before paused and looked back. “Get comfortable.” And the door to the cell slammed shut.
“What you think?” Katie turned to May, who was stood her arms crossed. She pondered for a moment, opened her mouth but was cut off.
“Agent May.” Fitz appeared in the doorway “Ward’s, well he’s not well, he’s gone down to the cargo bay, won’t let me treat him.”
May slowly turned to look back at Katie who snorted.
“No way, my days of dealing with his tantrums are over.”
“Thought I’d ask.” May smirked slightly. Katie waved her off and returned to looking at the screen. Elliot was sat still at the table, looking around the room in mild amusement, not the demeanour of a man who was concerned or phased in the slightest, which puzzled her slightly. In his shoes, she’d be extremely uncomfortable in a cell, being quizzed by a Government body on some kind of extra-terrestrial item.
She turned to face Coulson as he walked into the room.
“You don’t think he does want the power for himself, do you?” Katie looked at him. It was more a statement than a question.
“I don’t know
there’s something not quite right.” Phil sank into the chair behind his desk.
“He’s too confident” Katie shook her head. “Look at him. He’s not phased in the slightest.”
They both glanced at the screen. Now their ‘prisoner’ was sat on his chair, tilting backwards so the front two legs were off the floor. A sudden wild theory sprang into Katie’s head and she turned to AC.
“You know, he didn’t even flinch when you said you’d spent time with Aliens, normally that would make someone kinda curious right?”
“Normally, yes” Phil agreed, leaning back in his chair.
“And how did he know how to get that second piece?” Katie continued. “Do you think he figured it out as fast as we did or
“
“Did he know where to find it, because he hid it in the first place?”  Coulson finished her sentence. Katie shrugged, smiling. “See, Nova, that is why I wanted you here.”
“A moment, sir?” They both looked up to see Ward stood in the doorway.
“Come on in.” Phil gestured with his hand.
“Are you alright?” Katie asked, despite herself. Ward looked pale and drawn, really out of sorts.
“Yeah, thanks. I just need a word with Agent Coulson.”
Katie nodded to show she understood and made to stand up but Ward shook his head.
“Actually, stay.” He stopped her.  “It concerns the team so

Katie shrugged and settled back down in her chair.
“Alright Ward, what is it?” Coulson asked as the man took a seat next to Katie on the other side of the desk.
“I don’t think back to childhood. Ever. As you know.” He looked at Katie and she looked down. He’d told her about his childhood, he’d had an older brother that had been abusive, as had his father. “There are things I put away a long time ago because I have to be focused, tactical. I can’t be distracted. Especially by things that happened a lifetime ago. But before, when I touched that thing
 I did.”
“Touching the staff brought back memories?” Katie asked, curiously. Ward nodded and looked at her “My worst memory”. He paused for a moment and when he spoke again she was surprised to hear his voice was breaking slightly. “The first time I felt hate. And it won’t go away.
The room fell silent and Katie looked at Coulson who took a deep breath and broke the silence.
“You’ve got some rage built up?” Coulson asked. Ward looked at him and nodded. “Maybe it’s time to let it out.”
“Put our theory to the test.” Katie grinned, catching on.
Coulson nodded “I can run with that. ***** “You wanted to see me sir.” Steve stepped into the Directors office.
“Close the door Captain.” Fury instructed. Steve turned, did as he was told and then strode over to Fury’s desk.
“Have you spoken to Agent Stark today?”
Steve frowned. “Not today, no. I spoke to her last night.”
“What did she tell you about the mission?”
He was digging. Digging to see how much he knew and if Katie had kept her word. Swallowing down the annoyance he levelled the Director with a look that would have anyone else quaking in their boots.
“Nothing. All I know is she’s in Seville, and the team she’s working with contains Ward.” He drew himself a bit taller, hands falling to the buckle of his belt. “Which, for the record, was a real shitty thing to do.” Fury looked at Steve “I’m not having the teams I organise dictated by personal issues, Captain. “I don’t expect them to be.” Steve bit back. “But not warning her beforehand was out of order.” “Would she have gone if I’d have told her?” Steve hesitated, he didn’t actually know the answer to that. In actual fact she would have probably been torn, torn between wanting to take the mission, torn between not wanting to spend time in his vicinity. And knowing Katie as he did, the mission would have probably won.”
“I don’t know.” He replied honestly. “I think she would have wanted to do the right thing, I just don’t think all the lies are fair, its manipulative.”
“All the lies, Captain?” Fury looked at him and Steve felt himself pale. “What other lies has she told you about?” “Nothing. It was a figure of speech.” “So she hasn’t told you Coulson’s still alive?”
Steve put on what he hoped was his best shocked face. “What?”
Fury laughed. ”Your acting is as bad as your lying, Captain.”
Steve sighed before immediately going on the defensive. “You gonna de-badge her? I mean that’s what you told her isn’t it? Her job was on the line unless she lied for you?” Fury sighed “I didn’t want to do that. In hindsight I realised it was unfair to ask her to keep it from you. But it’s imperative that no one else finds out about this.”
“Secrets and lies huh?” Steve raised his eyebrows.
“We conduct our most effective work in the shadows, Captain, it’s just how it needs to be.” Steve looked to the side, his hands moving to his hips.
“Look, if you both wanna take a few days off when she’s back, it can be arranged.” Fury looked at him and Steve frowned at the man’s outward display of compassion.
“Feeling guilty?”
“Happens to the most cold hearted of us all.” Fury deadpanned. “And I figured you both might need it.” “Both of us?” Steve frowned, looking at him.
“Yeah, I didn’t just bring you up here to talk about Stark.” Fury picked up a remote and turned on the screen. A map flashed up and Steve took a deep breath. “Agent Romanoff has been undercover this last week tracking down more Chitauri weapons. This time to Yemen. I need you to organise an op.”
Steve folded his arms and let out a deep breath. “You just keep on giving, don’t you Nick?”
****
Their theory was right. Elliot Randalph was Asgardian, a fact he displayed by easily bending the blade of a knife that Ward threatened him with.
“I had no clue. Did you?” Fitz looked over at Simmons who shook her head. “Hidden in plain sight, an actual Asgardian. Brilliant.” Simmons grinned, staring at the screen. “How long do you suppose he’s been on our planet?” Skye asked. “A thousand years, maybe more.” Katie shrugged, turning her attention from the screen she’d been watching Elliot confess on to look at the team.
"If we could just cut him open a little
” Simmons mused
Katie and Skye both looked at her, Fitz was nodding his head in agreement. “
get some tissue samples, maybe some bodily fluids, think of all the things we could find out.” She finished. “Or we could just ask him them, weirdo” Skye rolled her eyes. “This is way, way better than the History Channel. I mean this guy has lived through all the scary stuff, the Crusades, the Black Death, Disco.”
“It is pretty exciting.” Katie agreed. “I mean Coulson thought finding Steve was cool but, he’d just slept for seventy years.”
Sky grinned as Agent May entered the room, holding a tablet and hitting various buttons on it. “What are you doing?” She asked, curiously.
“Sealing the interrogation room door.” May replied. Katie looked at her, the confusion she was feeling clearly evident on her face as May shrugged “Coulson’s orders.”
“Ah, locking me in.” Elliot said as Katie turned her attention back to the screen. “Well, I’ve been in tighter spots.” “This room is made of a silicon carbide-coated vibranium alloy.” Ward explained “Meant for prisoners like yourself.” “But you’re in here, too. And eventually somebody will open that door”. “Not if I tell them not to.”  Coulson shrugged, sitting in the chair opposite Elliot. “So the myth is your autobiography.” “ I didn’t write it. I didn’t want anyone to know about me. Then I had to open my big mouth.” He sighed “Were you captured? Tortured?”
“Horny.” Elliot shrugged and Katie let out a snort. “I met a French girl in 1546. Ah, she loved stories. So
I told her a great one. All about the peaceful Asgardian warrior who stayed. Now, how was I to know her brother, the priest, would write it all down and turn it into, I don’t know, a thing?”
“Do you know Thor?” Coulson continued the questions.
“Oh sure. I spent all my days palling around with the future King of Asgard” Elliot rolled his eyes “No, I don’t know Thor. I was a mason. I broke rocks” He chuckled. “For thousands of years. If you can imagine that. So when they came, asking for people to fight, yes, of course I signed up. I think, really, I just wanted to travel.” “ But you had the staff.” Ward stated. “I hated that thing. Other guys loved all the power that comes with the rage. No, I didn’t like it at all.” He cocked his head to Ward and leant in closer. “And you don’t, either, it seems.” “What did it do to me?” “ It shines a light into your dark places. Doesn’t matter if you’re human, Asgardian, the effect is the same. Unpleasant.” “Shines a light” Simmons scoffed “that’s no explanation”. “It was forged from a rare metal and reacts to whoever is holding it. Or interacts.” Elliot carried on. “I went to such great lengths to make sure that the staff wasn’t found. Unfortunately, since the myth was written down, people have been searching for it for centuries.” “I need your help to stop them before they get the last piece of your staff.” Coulson said, leaning on the table. “Oh, I’m a pacifist now.” Elliot shook his head, leaning back. “And you don’t want to risk your identity being discovered.” Coulson carried on “Listen, I wouldn’t worry too much about these angry youths. They always clam down, and eventually, they die of old age. And that is one of the pleasant aspects of life here. Everything changes.” “I’ll tell you what’s gonna change, your anonymity, unless you help us find the final piece of your staff.” Coulson sighed. “You may not know Thor, but I do, and he’s very fond of Agent Stark so
” Elliot slouched on the table in front of him glaring up at Coulson, before he shrugged and sat up a bit.
“My first love on this planet was Ireland.” He said quietly.“There was a monastery and the monks gave a nice, warm place to sleep, some soup and some mulled wine.” “Near God.” Katie muttered, looking at Sky who triumphantly slammed her hand on the desk.
“I’ll go set the course for Ireland.” May said, nodding.
“Make it fast.” Katie said, as the woman looked at her. “Let’s get the rest of that damned thing before it hurts anyone else.”
