Hayley is my problematic fav ❤️
Zoe Terakes was so damn good in this role, they have such a confident commanding presence that made them impossible to hate. It means SO MUCH to me as a trans non-binary person to see that representation 😭💕💘

talk to me (2023) is so real because if a cute transmasc guy pulled out a severed hand that makes you possessed when you touch it and told me to touch it I'd do it no hesitation. whatever you say handsome.

The new A24 horror film Talk to Me uses possession and communicating with spirits as a metaphor for drug use. Perhaps it’s a little anticlimactic to say it point blank but the film isn’t exactly subtle in this regard (the plaster hand, supposedly once belonging to a medium is even used to hold a joint). It is not that this metaphor that is interesting but how the film uses it. Communicating with the dead becomes a party activity- I’m a social medium, not a real psychic.
In the beginning Mia is introduced to the hand at a party. After this first use Mia needs to recreate the party setting to get that second, third, forth hit. She doesn’t have a problem, she’s a social user. Mia has recently experienced a major loss, the death of her mother, and as a result she has been feeling isolated. These parties give the illusion of community, but when the going gets tough these people prove not to be real friends; bailing at the first sign of trouble, flaky and only helping when their own safety is in jeopardy.
While using the hand is described as feeling amazing, and the montages show a fun uproarious time, the scenes showing the possessions in real time are from an outside perspective, seeing the physical body and not the mental escape- it looks scary, the way pictures of heavy drug users are shown to elementary kids to scare them.
Many horror movies are in some regard cautionary tales. At there worst, and most famously, attributing sex and drug use with a ‘deserved’ violent death. Talk to me is a bit more gracious in its messaging but it is a warning. The title and the metaphor are in conversation with each other, Mia is really crying out for someone to talk to about her grief over the death of her mother, but instead she is filling the need by using the hand. Turning to the hand rather then reaching out results in Mia destroying her relationships, and in the films climax Mia loses herself to it, becoming entrapped on the other side, a spirit that the hand connects to unsuspecting partiers. Drug addiction can feel like an escape from grief and pain, like an amazing party - but it can turn in a moment, and when it does you might find yourself unable to escape.

Movies I watched this year (so far)
I am not counting rewatches.
Nosferatu - a bit disappointed about this one. There was so much hype around it. It was fine, but not amazing like everyone said. I don't regret watching it, but will probably never cross my mind again.
The Wild Robot - I really liked the animation and it was a cute movie even if I saw similar stories before. It is based on a first book in a series and it shows, but I also think it can work as a standalone.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish - so much fun! I really loved the animation and the plot was interesting. The found family part is predictable, but it's always cute to see. Goldilocks plot was a bit weak and solved too quickly though.
Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl - it was good. The gnomes were creepy. However, I seem to forget these movies quite easily. I still enjoy the animation and value all the work put into it though.
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget - so so bad. So unfunny too. A shame, especially because I really enjoy the first movie. I will just pretend this one doesn't exist.
The Substance - Good and disgusting as intended. I don't love it and I found some parts near the end really ridiculous, but I like it.
Challengers - The hype fooled me again. It is a good movie and I get the message. It still didn't stop me from being mad at the end.
Saltburn - Not as hyped as above, but still disappointing. I think I would have loved this in my early 20s when I was into dark academia and such. At this point I have seen way too many similar plots and nothing was surprising.
Talk to Me - An horror movie that had two actually scary scenes. I really liked this one and I was talking all alone at my tv. A sign of an immersive movie. That said, it is a movie about teenagers and they will probably annoy you at some point (or many points).
Mickey 17 - Good. I expected better. I will probably forget it in a few months.
Astérix & Obelisk: The Middle Kingdom - I was so worried about this one, but it was surprisingly very funny. A surprising and ridiculous movie that made both me and my partner laugh a lot.
Megan - I will be so there in theatres for Megan 2. This movie was so funny at times. It had some scary and dramatic elements, but everytime I remember the random singing and dancing it cracks me up. I watched the trailer for the sequeal and it seems even sillier and not even trying to be horror now. Embrace the stupidity. I am so ready!
Wonka - Trying to compete with the sequel of Chicken Run for worst movie I watched this year. They completely ignored Willy Wonka's backstory in the original story, which I get, but I didn't like the bullshit they made up. My sister also watched it and, without me even saying my thoughts on it, she told me it was crap.
Sinners - Best movie of the year so far and it will be hard to beat. It made me remember how it is to love a piece of media. I am still in awe about the drama, horror, comedy and musical blend. Finally a movie that deserves all the hype it's getting.

I don't know how to describe it, but I think the embalmed hand in Talk To Me (2023) is actually a brilliant representation of the film's message. It's a hand! We hold hands to connect with others! when you're struggling mentally, abusing your vices, feeling isolated - you're meant to reach out and talk to someone!!!!! if mia had turned to her friends, her friend's mum, or even her dad, and said she's not ok and needs help, then she might've had a happy ending. but instead of reaching out to make a real connection, she clings onto this fake hand, providing comfort that won't last, that will only causes her to spiral further and further away. it's brilliant. an embalmed, ceramic hand is not the hand you should be reaching for.
