It's hard to describe how it feels to sink into one of her books because no other writer really sounds like her. The lush prose, the sense of place, the astute, often wrenching character studies, the sense of something almost magical lurking around the next corner that somehow isn't at odds with the gritty realities, the way each book somehow comes with the same overwhelming revelation that the mystery is far less important than the people involved in it. The murders are at the heart of each novel, but they’re almost incidental to it under the complicated web of characters and motivations.

Okay, I think I'm done waxing poetic about Tana French's writing in general, and I'm ready to look at things I liked about this novel specifically. First and always, it's the characters. I was looking forward to seeing Stephen Moran's perspective after his appearances in previous books, and he doesn't disappoint. He's young and generally likeable, with a fascinating ability to figure out what people want and give that personality back to them, and I enjoyed the contrast to Conway's take-no-shit approach. It's fascinating to watch them work through a tentative partnership and figure out the ways they can trust and work with each other. I also really enjoyed the varied personalities in Holly Mackey's group of friends and how that friendship is a kind of magic, fragile and temporary but unforgettable. Holly is a powerhouse like her dad, and I'm half-hoping she'll grow up and join the Murder Squad so we can have a book from her perspective.

The rest of the characters, namely Joanne and her group of friends, are frankly hard to read at times. I read more YA than anything else, and for as good at French usually is at capturing voice, I think it goes a little overboard on the OMG like smh teen portrayal. While the themes about male gazes, slut-shaming, and the brutal pecking order of high school are well-developed, I found my interest flagging in most of the chapters that take place in the past with the girls. They drag at the pace of the novel, and I'm not sure we needed quite so much detail on how these friendships functioned a year ago. The present chapters are frequently compelling, as Moran and Conway's interviews with each of the girls turn over new pieces of the mystery and present insights into the characters. The reveal, as always, is less a surprise than a grim, inevitable conclusion. While The Secret Place is probably my least favorite book since In the Woods, it didn't diminish my love for the series at all.

Nampō Roku, Book 4 (23.3): Six Arrangements for the Chigai-dana [違棚], Part 3.

¹Kagami-no-su, bon ni [カガミノス、盆ニ].

The word su [栖] refers to a storage-box* -- usually made of lacquered or polished natural wood, or sometimes of ivory -- that was turned on a lathe so that it is carefully matched to the dimensions of the object that will be stored within†. Often the su was beautifully carved or decorated‡, making it an object of appreciation in and of itself.

The word kagami-no-su [鑑の栖] means a lacquered box or case for an antique hand-mirror, such as is shown above. These mirrors were usually round, and were held by means of a cord attached to a pierced boss on the back. The mirror (minus the cord) nested in the box, for protection (since the reflective side was not covered by glass, it was easily scratched). They were always imported from the continent prior to the Edo period**.

The mirror, in its case, was displayed on a tray. __________ *In this context. Literally, the word su [栖, which is a simplified form of 棲; the word was also written with the kanji 巢, which has similar meanings] means nest, rookery, breeding place, hive, den, haunt, (spider's) web, and -- more germane to the present issue -- dwelling, house, residence. It was by extension of the last nuance that su came to be used to mean a storage box.

†The hikiya [挽家], in which certain meibutsu chaire and temmoku-chawan were stored, is a type of su.

‡Usually in a manner that complemented the bas relief decoration on the back side of the mirror.

**Bronze-making was brought to Japan from Korea during the last decade of the sixteenth century, one of the “fruits” of the Japanese invasion.

²Ami-iri jikirō [網入食籠].

A jikirō [食籠] is a lidded box for food. These boxes had between one and several levels.

An ami [網] is a net bag (made by tying long cords together decoratively). The ami was specially made for the jikirō, and originally was used when carrying the box of food out of doors, for a picnic. (The net bag in which a cha-tsubo is stored is also an ami.)

³Tsuri-kōro [釣香炉].

The kōro is suspended from a hook attached to the middle of the ceiling above the chigai-dana. This kind of censer -- classical examples of which were produced in both India and China -- was originally made to be suspended above a dashi-fuzukue [出文机] that was built into a bay overlooking the street (usually on the second floor of a building). The intention was to perfume the often fetid air wafting in through the window*.

While the censer was intended to be hung above the middle of a built-in writing desk, when hung above the chigai-dana, it was suspended from the ceiling in the same way.

While the O-kazari Ki [御飾記] shows a rather generic example (shaped like a hanging flower pot), here a kōro shaped like a bird is featured -- to illustrate the way this kind of censer should be displayed (this will be described below, in the commentary on the sketch). ___________ *In the case of these hanging incense burners, a large pinch of crushed incense wood -- often personal blends were used that incorporated byakudan [白檀] (white sandalwood) and other plant-derived aromatic powders, into the usual jinkō [沈香] or kyara [伽羅] (light and dark aloeswood, respectively) base -- was pressed against the bottom (or burning-platform -- which was often shaped like a shallow cup), and set alight by applying a taper to the tip of the cone. The cone of coarse powder would then smolder away slowly.

The Indian incense cones reproduce this shape (and were formulated in the same way, plus the addition of a bonding agent).

⁴Sho [書].

This means a bound book.

Shibayama Fugen notes that the bar on top of the book is a bun-chin [文鎮], a bronze paperweight*.

The reason why a paperweight has been placed on the book seems to be in the interests of developing a certain theme -- which might be to suggest an outing, such as for viewing the flowers of spring, or colored leaves of autumn†. In this case, the book likely would contain a selection of seasonal poems‡, or poems written during such outings. __________ *Which could be of any shape. While bar-shaped bun-chin were common, many calligraphers preferred to use this kind only to hold down the upper edge of the piece of paper.

The lower corners were secured by a pair of small paperweights, often in fanciful shapes. Some of the classical bronze futaoki were originally made for this purpose; and, in the present situation, it would have been more likely that one of this sort would be placed on top of the book (since bar-type bun-chin were commonplace, and so uninteresting).

†This would seem to be the reason why the jikirō is displayed tied in a net bag as well -- which was usually done only when the box of food would be carried out-of-doors.

Perhaps this kind of arrangement was originally used when inviting guests who were on their way to -- or returning from -- such an outing.

‡Most of the great anthologies of classical poetry were divided into books, with several in every collection devoted to the poems of one of the seasons.

Shibayama Fugen introduces this sketch by explaining that this is another version of the futatsu-dana [二ツ棚], located beside a jun-toko [順床] -- meaning that the toko is enclosed by the chigai-dana on the left. Because the kōro is shaped like a bird, it follows the same rules that were set out earlier, with respect to the kame-tsuru shoku-dai [龜鶴燭臺] (a candlestick shaped like a crane standing on the back of a turtle) commonly displayed as part of the mitsu gu-soku [三具��] on the oshi-ita [押板]: in the jun-toko setting (where the toko-bashira is on the viewer’s left), the bird’s left eye faces forward*.

Moving, now, to Tanaka Senshō’s commentary†, he writes: “because the tsuri-kōro is hanging in the very center [of the alcove in which the chigai-dana is located], the mirror-case rests on the right-most of the three kane. The jikirō is displayed below the shelf, on the middle [kane]; and the book is assigned to the kane that bisects the middle of the naka-dana [中棚]‡.

◎ It is important to take note of the fact that, regardless of on which shelves the utensils may be located, it is essential that two utensils should never overlap, above and below. One should pay careful attention to this matter: this is the ku-den [口傳]**. ___________ *Yue ni tsuri-kōro no tori hidari-me wo miseshime-iru nari [故ニ釣香炉ノ鳥左眼ヲ見セシメ居ルナリ].

While the rule was explained as being that the bird (or other animal) should face toward the toko-bashira when such an incense burner was displayed in the toko, when it is displayed elsewhere, it retains the same orientation, regardless of where it is in relation to the toko-bashira.

In this instance, since the toko-bashira is on the right side of the chigai-dana, the kōro actually faces away from it.

The same thing was true when a dō-bin [銅瓶] (a metal pitcher) was displayed on the chigai-dana: the mouth of the pitcher (which is equivalent to the face of the bird) faced away from the toko-bashira in the jun-toko setting.

†Tanaka’s narrative style is more succinct, and so easier to incorporate into these brief explanatory notes.

Shibayama Fugen tends to wander off into wordy digressions that, while fascinating to someone who is interested in the details and arguments behind these arrangements, would make an already rather pointless part of the collection (from the perspective of the applicability of this material to modern-day chanoyu) even more unbearable. In general, the two commentaries do cover the same points, since both of these writers were basing their explanations on things imparted to them by different members of the same group of Enkaku-ji scholars -- though Shibayama’s source seems to have been one or two generations earlier than Tanaka’s, meaning the differences between the two commentaries likely reflect the evolving nature of Nampō Roku interpretation (unfortunately abetted by certain lapses resulting from the untimely deaths of the members of the earlier generations).

Vagaries in Tanaka’s writings -- such as those that we will encounter in his comments on the second of the two sketches being considered in this post -- may well reflect the loss of specific details that were still available when Shibayama was making his inquiries. This is why I usually prefer Shibayama’s commentary to Tanaka’s (and have so said to various people who have asked me for advice regarding how to approach the question of understanding the Nampō Roku); yet such specifics aside, Tanaka’s is usually easier to translate here, since, in this part of Book Four, he is primarily providing captions, rather than indulging in exposition -- the difference between 4 sentences and 3 pages of text.

‡Naka-dana [中棚], which means “middle shelf,” is the traditional name for the lower of the two suspended shelves.

**Izure no tana no dōgu mo ten-chi ni futatsu no dōgu ga kasanaranu-yō ni chūi-shita ten ga ku-den de aru [何れの棚の道具も天地に二ツの道具が重ならぬ様に注意した点が口傳である].

Tanaka is saying that, no matter where any two utensils may be displayed -- whether on the shelves, suspended one above the other, or even hanging from the ceiling -- they must never occupy the same kane. This important ku-den is nicely illustrated by this arrangement.

⁵Shō-e [小繪].

“Small paintings.”

These would have been a ni-haba ittsui [二幅一對] -- two paintings mounted identically, which were intended to be displayed together as a unit.

Often these scrolls originated as paintings taken from old horizontal scrolls of poems and pictures -- perhaps one that had been damaged so that it could no longer be displayed as a makimono [巻物]; but the important point was that they had to be small, and then mounted in equally diminutive hyōgu [表具], so that the two could be hung together in a 1-ken alcove, with a shelf further limiting the space available. (In fact, the scrolls were usually prepared specifically for display in the setting.)

⁶Onaji [同].

“The same.”

In other words, the second scroll is also a shō-e [小繪], and one that forms a pair with the other. The two examples shown above will give the reader an idea of the desired effect.

⁷Kōro [香炉].

The incense burner is represented as a bird in some versions of this sketch (including that found in the Enkaku-ji manuscript), apparently so as to reinforce the teaching of the way this kind of censer should be oriented (when it is not displayed in the tokonoma).

The sketch in Shibayama Fugen’s commentary, however, shows that at least his teihon [底本] featured a generic sort of kōro. (His source book was one of those made “at a distance” -- with the compiler writing, once he returned home, what he remembered having seen earlier at the Enkaku-ji -- since it was forbidden for any notes to be taken while still on the premises.)

⁸Suzuri・ryōshi-bako [硯・料紙箱].

This refers to a set of two boxes, one (the suzuri-bako [硯箱]), to hold the writing implements, and the other (the ryōshi-bako [料紙箱]), to hold an assortment* of writing paper.

The ryōshi-bako (the box, tray, and lid seen from the middle to the right) was somewhat larger than the suzuri-bako (the smaller box and lid on the left), so the suzuri-bako was stacked on top of the ryōshi-bako when displayed beneath the chigai-dana. This pair of boxes might have been made as a set (such as the one shown above); but is was also possible for them to be complementary pieces of completely different types. ___________ *While folded packets of writing paper could, of course, be deposited in the box, frequently individual sheets of writing paper were kept in this kind of box -- so that a piece that was suitable to the letter that one wished to write could be found. While less concern seems to have been taken in the sixteenth century, in earlier periods, there was deep concern that the texture and color of the paper match the mood or contents of the missive that was written on it -- making a large collection of random pieces of paper desirable.

“This is a sketch of an ichimen-tana [一面棚] (a shelf with a single level). Since it adjoins a jun-toko, the toko will be located [beyond] the left-seat*.”

Tanaka Senshō writes, the kōro is assigned to the central kane. That it should be displayed in the space between the two paintings is [one of the associated] ku-den.

The suzuri[-bako]† and ryōshi-bako are displayed on the right-most of the three kane that divide the space beneath [the shelf].

It appears that the suzuri and ryōshi-bako occupy a kane that is also tenanted by the small picture above -- which was [said to be] something that must be avoided [in the commentary on the previous illustration]. One should be very careful about [doing this kind of thing]‡. ___________ *Kore ha ichimen-tana no zu nari, kono kamae ha jun-toko ni shite, kono hidari-za ni toko aru-beshi [是レハ一面棚ノ図ナリ、此ノ構ハ順床ニシテ、此ノ左座ニ床アルベシ].

This is how Shibayama Fugen begins his commentary. The location of the tokonoma can be deduced from the fact that the fukuro-dana (the cupboard enclosed by sliding doors) is on the left: the fukuro must always be located on the side farthest from the toko.

Tanaka does not seem to understand that the suzuri is also placed inside a box. To display a naked suzuri (which is made of stone) on top of a lacquered box would risk doing serious damage to the lacquer.

‡Ue no shō-e to kasanaru-koto wo saketa ten ni fukaki chū-i ga aru [上の小絵と重なることを避けた点に深き注意がある].

“Here it seems that, on account of the width of the painting, the stacked [boxes of paper and writing materials] are overlapping [one of] the kane occupied by the scroll: one should be warnedᵃ about this.” What, exactly, is Tanaka Senshō trying to say? On the one hand, he might be dismissing the arrangement as an anomaly, something that violates the conventions simply because it cannot be avoided. Or he could be underscoring something so important that he does not dare to spell it outᵇ.

Shibayama Fugen, however, has no qualms about explaining this matter carefully (yet he does so deferentially, as if he is afraid to hurt someone’s feelings): “the paper, writing implements, and ink-stone boxes on the left seat of the ji-ita, can be placed on the end-most kane. But even if the suzuri and ryōshi are placed on the second kane on the left seat, it does not appear that there would be anything to hinder one from doing soᶜ.

“What, then, is the reason why these things can [only] be placed on the end-most kane? It seems to be because, though [the boxes] rest belowᵈ the scroll, it is to the middle of the scrollᵉ to which deference must be shownᶠ.” __________ ᵃChū-i [注意] indicates a warning (and modifying it with fukaki [深き] -- “deep,” “profound” -- only strengthens the perception of a very real danger or harm). It is not used simply to mean “take note of” or “think about” something that will have neutral consequences. In fact, Tanaka seems to be saying that the arrangement shown in the sketch is technically wrong, and so should not be replicated -- at least not without extremely careful consideration of the danger (to ones reputation) of proceeding with the proposed course of action.

ᵇOr, perhaps he simply was not clear about this matter himself, and so decided to be evasive.

ᶜIn other words, there is nothing on the shelf above that would compromise the use of the middle of the three kane under the shelf (the way that the kōro‘s presence on the central kane precludes something being placed below it).

ᵈMukō no shō-e ni tsuishi [向フノ小絵ニ対シ].

Tsuishi [対し] literally means “to form a pair (with),” or “to correspond (to something).”

Thus, Shibayama Fugen's statement literally means that [the boxes] form a pair with the painting; or they correspond to the painting. Shibayama is affirming that the boxes are truly located within the same horizontal space that is also occupied by the scroll.

ᵉThe center of the scroll corresponds to the scroll’s “kane.” (Which means “the place that it occupies,” and should not be confused with the fixed yang-kane: this concept is also expressed in the Hundred Poems, in poem 17 of the Kyūshū Manuscript, where, with respect to the hanging hanaire, it says kane wo hazushite utsu ga kane nari [カネを外して打つがカネなり], “if it is dissociated from the [fixed] kane, the place where [the hook] has been nailed is its kane.”)

ᶠSono haba no chū-ō wo habakarite no koto naru-beshi [其ノ幅ノ中央ヲ憚リテノコトナルベシ].

Habakaru [憚る] means to be afraid of, to shrink from.

In other words, it is the center of the scroll that must be avoided. This is why Jōō's sketch uncharacteristically includes the kake-o [掛緒] (the cord from which the scroll is suspended on the hook) at the top of each scroll: the scroll will only hang straight if the peg is directly above the center of the scroll.

If we draw a line from the point where the peg would be found (which establishes the center of the scroll) down to the ji-ita, we can see that the boxes will not contact the scroll's kane (the blue line) if they are placed on the end-most kane; yet they will just as clearly impinge on that kane if placed on the second kane. This is why the second kane must be eschewed*.

This is the second part of the ku-den which Tanaka Senshō was coy about revealing (for whatever reason) -- even though he was given the opportunity to do so here: the teaching is, in fact, incomplete without it. ___________ *In the sketch, the dimensions of the boxes were based on the largest size commonly used in Japan, while the chigai-dana is the usual 1-ken wide.

And, due to the fact that “the space between [the scrolls] should be two-thirds of what is found on the left and right” (as explained in the post that described the ni-haba ittsui [二幅一對]), the center point of the scrolls will be found in the same place.
