This Book Club is open to ANYONE and EVERYONE. You can participate as much or as little as you want. We will play a new chapter every Saturday, beginning April 12. However, late entries are more than welcome if you are unable to play on time.

The annoying (affectionate) thing about The Crown and the Flame is that Book 3 is the best book in that series, but only because the first two books built up to it really well. So even though it's easily my favorite, I can't replay it without replaying the other two books first.

TCATF has this great sense of increasing scope over the course of the series. It starts with Kenna reclaiming her own kingdom, then liberating the other kingdoms from Luther, and then she faces down a rival empire that has threatened the Five Kingdoms for centuries.

And what's so great is that the threat of the Iron Empire was present from the very beginning. The alliance that queen Arianna called for, the one that led to the meeting of the rulers of the Five Kingdoms that ended in disaster, was so they could stand together against the Iron Empire. Luther conquered the Five Kingdoms for the same reason, he saw it as the best way to unify the kingdoms against the Iron Empire. The only reason Kenna could reclaim her kingdom was because Luther was off fighting the Empire overseas. The Iron Empire has been present long before Azura ever makes an appearance.

So it really comes full circle: Kenna not only defeats the man that terrorized her kingdom and the neighboring kingdoms, but also the threat that caused that man to rise to power in the first place.

Cadybear's Reviews Brief Thoughts- The Crown and The Flame

Originally I was not going to make posts for stories where my last playthrough was 2 or more years ago. Mainly because the stuff I'd be saying about it would either be not very substantial or not as informed.

But now I've decided against that, as I'd like to at least provide my current opinions on the story and context for the ranking I've given it. If I ever get around to playing them again, I can just do a re-review. Any pieces that are too short to constitute a real review will just be titled as "Cadybear's Brief Thoughts".

Welcome to the fifth official Cadybear's Reviews Brief Thoughts post! Today I'll be talking about The Crown and The Flame, which I have ranked on the "Platinum Tier" at 9 stars out of a possible 10. My last and only playthrough of this series was back in April-June 2021.

TCATF is iconic for being the first ever Choices book (well, one of them anyways), and I myself consider it a pretty solid series. The characters are fun, both Kenna and Dom are great characters to play as, and the choices actually matter. One thing I really loved was that you could directly surpass certain premium choices if you had enough prestige/power/legend points– I really wish they utilized this system more often in other stories. 

My only gripes are that although the story was engaging, it did drag at times. And I don’t like that you can’t carry over your Book 1 choices to Book 2; poor Rose just got absolutely shafted because of that. 

Overall, well-made and very nostalgic for me. Fun fact, I actually have a little memory of playing Book 1 while sitting in the waiting area after getting my first Covid shot back in April 2021, a month or two after I got into the app for the first time.

So although this series isn’t quite one of my favorites, it still gets a high ranking for the effort and heart that went into it and for the good memories it’s given me.

TCATF won the book club poll over The Heist: Monoco by one vote! I think this was the closest poll we've had in a while, so if people are still interested in THM in the summer, it could be a future book for sure!

I have not chose a start date yet, but I'll try to make a choice in the next day or two. It will either start this Saturday, April 12 or next April 19. My guess is it will be the 19th, but if I can get things together, we can start April 12.

The people who were more vocal about which book they wanted, all chose THM so I'm not sure who will be joining but I'm excited to find out.

Since I don't know who is playing, if you are one of the people who voted for tcatf can you let me know what you'd like to see in this book club? what are you hoping I keep from past clubs or do differently? TCATF is different than other books we've done so far since we don't have a customizable MC so MC related questions are out for this book, so what would you like instead? Replaying TCATF, I actually find Dom's storyline to be the less interesting of the two, at least from book 2 onward.

In Book 1 there's his developing fire powers, but he's also undermining Marco's rule from the inside, and it's a nice mirror to Kenna's storyline. After that though he's literally and figuratively just increasing Kenna's firepower. Kenna's off building alliances, coming up with plans to thwart her enemies, dealing with unexpected setbacks, and Dom is... learning how to control his fire powers and then he gets kidnapped for a while. His storyline feels a lot more separated from the greater plot after book 1.

It was never a competition - A Kenna x Raydan fanfic

Summery: As he watches Kenna and Dom spar for old time’s sake, Raydan can’t help but feel a slight pinch at his heart. Dom has given Kenna something Raydan could never give her - the possibility to say goodbye to her loved ones, to the ones she lost. Kenna has gotten her closure, but Dom never did. *Jumps from Kenna’s and Raydan’s POV* Author’s note: @michue reminded of the scene at the end of TCATF trilogy, where Kenna and Dom were sparring outside the castle, just like they did at the beginning of the series, and requested a jealous Raydan over it. I decided to write this piece as a part two to this fanfic - ”It’s all healthy competition” Dom/Raydan. I hope you’re fine with it! I recommend reading that fanfic if you haven’t, and then continuing on to this one, all though you don’t have to read it for it to make sense. I also a decided to slightly link this fanfic with “A breath of relief” mentioning a certain (not very liked) character, and introducing another oc. hang in there, this might be leading somewhere… ;) I hope you like it! 😘

It’s been a year since they got married, and a few months since Kenna gave birth to their beautiful boy, Adrien. Raydan was now holding the baby, while Kenna and Dom sparred for old time’s sake. His son was giggling in his arms, clearly happy to be held. Raydan couldn’t hide his happiness, either, as he was watching his son in awe. Kenna won, of course, and reminded Dom how she always had won in those kind of battles they had. He made a snarky comment about turning into a dragon, at which Adrien took interest. Well, maybe not interest, since the boy didn’t really know what dragon meant, at that time, but he was clearly looking towards Dominic’s direction right now. Dom took notice of that, too, and came by, ruffling his hair. “Are you being a good boy? Not giving too much trouble for your parents, eh? I sure hope so!” Dom talked to Adrien, who just played with the hem of his sleeve. “Yeah, he sure is.” Raydan said, proudly. Dom couldn’t hide a sorrowful look in his eyes, and Raydan has thought back to their talk at the eve of the battle. Both of them cared for Kenna deeply. Cared. They were in love. Ultimately, Kenna chose Raydan. He was the happiest man alive, and she assured him she was as well. She beamed walking down the aisle, she beamed when they said their vows, and she beamed when Adrien came into the world. They had a happy marriage, but Dom and her were growing further apart, for obvious reasons, too. He couldn’t get away fast enough after the wedding, and while he was visiting Stormholt as ambassador many times, he didn’t stay longer than he needed. The only times he was still being her best friend, was when he was giving her lessons on how to enter the spirit world. Kenna told Raydan all about it, how excited yet nervous she was, and he was happy for her, but couldn’t deny the pinch in his heart of Dom being able to give Kenna something that he never could.
