TERF linked an anti-puberty blocker report that linked me to a study, so I decided to read through it because hey, always best to be informed, right?

And yeah, this really taught me about the horrors of puberty blockers.

(content warnings for: medical and puberty mentions, obviously. self harm. vomiting. transphobia. terfs. please lmk if i need more.)

Slightly lower bone density!?!?!?!

Not ideal, obviously, but one can help bone density by eating vegetables, calcium, protein, various other healthy stuff that someone on blockers should probably discuss with their doctor and not me. And hey, if going on puberty blockers makes you more likely to break a bone in your old age- it also makes you more likely to make it to old age.

Shorter than average!?!?!!?!?!?

Listen, as much as I complain about being short, it's not really that bad. Definitely annoying, but not life threatening or anything. Plus, cis kids hit their growth spurts late all the time, and no one makes this much of a fuss.

Patients and their parents felt like the patient had fewer problems!?!?!?!

So horrible, think of the children!

Less likely to self harm!?!!?!?!?

Yeah, doesn't the thought of fewer children self harming just fill you to the brim with rage?

I will note that the P-value doesn't fall under significant. Still, 70% confident that puberty blockers reduce self harm risk. I like those odds. (This is a better P-value than for hip bone density.)

People felt like their lives generally improved!?!?!?!?

At 6-15 months on blockers, ~45% of participants rated overall life changes as positive. An additional ~37% rated both positive and negative changes. Only ~12% rated their overall life changes as negative.

At 15-24 months, ~55% of participants chose positive and an additional ~17% chose positive and negative. Another ~17% chose negative.

And despite confounding negative influences, such as living in the UK as a trans person or starting high school, people on puberty blockers still generally improved! Terrible, terrible.

There were adverse side effects such as headaches, hot flushes, fatigue, mood swings, and sleep problems!?!?!?!

Almost all side effects were gone after two years, excepting four people with mild headaches/hot flushes and one person with mild fatigue. There were very few moderate to severe headaches/hot flushes, none for other symptoms, and all of them were gone by two years.

You know what else has some wacky side effects? Birth control pills. When I tried taking one, I puked. Tried again, puked again. It wasn't fun. I think they can also cause acne, mood changes, nausea, headaches, pain in breasts.

Just because they have some negative side effects, would a TERF suggest that doctors not prescribe birth control?

No? Well, what's up with the double standard? Clearly it's not just out of concern for the patients, so don't pretend it is, jackass.

Yes? Cool. You don't actually care about feminism and you're happy to side with misogyny as long as it hurts trans people. Cool beans cool beans.

But the children on blockers can't medically consent!?!?!!?!

Let's look at the exclusion criteria!

So, no one who can't give informed medical consent is doing this. Super glad we had this conversation. You can learn more about medical consent if you care to.

In conclusion

Puberty blockers are good. They have some negative side effects, so they're not for good for everyone- but they're also not bad for everyone. That should be a conversation between a patient and a doctor to figure out what works best for them, but the solution is not to just totally ban puberty blockers. TERFs are full of shit. Try listening to the science.

Editing TEBF

So for those who don't know, I'm editing TEBF! I haven't done major edits, mostly due to school and other obligations preventing me from doing so, but I've found the time to slowly edit the chapters!

This means that I decided to add to chapters like descriptions, character reactions, and more that help flesh it out better.

I didn't know what to add in my previous (mostly grammatical) edits of the chapters, mostly because they were fine as they were. But now I want them to be better.

Or at least, better than before.
