Sign ups will be open for two weeks. Sign ups close on Sunday 14 April 2024 at 00.00 GMT (what time is that for me?)

The cold winds of winter rush through the old college town. Miles drags himself through another shift at the dingy coffee shop, Rich's Beans, and he wishes for summer, for the day he is out of here. But when he gets a new coworker, a young guy named Alex, with pretty dark hair and even prettier dark eyes, life suddenly seems a little brighter.

Will Miles be able to keep his bubbling feelings under control or will his silly crush keep him warm during this season's freak thunderstorms?

So! You've signed up for the role of ficwriter, you've claimed a prompt and you're ready to rock and roll............ but your brain decided to clown on you.

Yeah. We've all been there. Thus is the nature of writing, I'm afraid =/

Never fear, though. You can kick that traitor brain of yours in the ass by simply using some of the resources listed below.

Oh, btw. These work even if you're signed up for other roles and/or for other projects. Their main goal is helping you plan, structure and tell a story.

Enjoy:

National Centre for Writing: a UK page with lots of resources for beginner writers! Here you'll find articles, podcasts, free classes, newsletters, etc.

Jane Friedman - How to Use a Plot Planner: the most important part in writing a story is planning what happens in it. This article gives a pretty dynamic insight on how to plan and structure your plot. A must-read for all writers.

Story Planner: and since we're on this topic... Enjoy the tools here and let your imagination go wild--with the appropriate structure.

Creative Writing for Beginners: a collection of articles and resources to help you improve your writing skills.

Learn to Write: everything you could ask for in terms of resources and articles. Go nuts!

Character Development Worksheets: ok, i fucking love this stuff. It really helps you get to the core of your characters and plan your story more organically. Use and abuse these, you won't regret it.

More Character Development Worksheets: there's never too many of them.

Plot Worksheets: same as above, but for your plot.

Canva: I'm a huge fan of this one, tbh. It has a shitton of templates for everything your heart may desire--mind maps, moodboards, movie posters, planners, etc. Whatever way you get inspired, Canva got you covered. I use it for literally everything, be it IRL stuff or ficwriting.

Creative Writing Now: and we finish it off with a little bit of everything. Knock yourself out, this baby got you covered.

Favourite place to go on vacation?: to be honest i don’t go on holiday much, but i’ve always really just liked going to small woodland resort things like Centre Parcs??

What’s a song that makes you dance immediately: Want Love by Fuzzy Sun

Tea or coffee? And what kind?: generally a tea person but i’ve been drinking more coffee than such recently! usually normal tea tea UM 

Do you play an instrument?: i bloody WISH 

What’s your favourite type of personality?: i mean everyone is different and i love that, but i love to be an absolute twat and i’m silly pretty much all of the time, so i love people who don’t take themselves too seriously

Favourite comedian?: the british government xoxo 

Gummy candy or chocolate?: chocolate 

What did you ‘want to be when you grew up’ as a kid?: i can’t really remember but i’ve always been into performing arts, we used to have this weird wooden thing that my dad flipped over in our garden and i used to utilise it as a stage for hours on end

What’s your favourite physical feature about yourself?: either my eyes or my hair, which is pretty much a lion’s mane 

When was the last time you watched a show or movie on a TV?: as in a physical tv??? well i’m really really into films specifically, but i’ve just been banging on things like The Thick of It and Friends on Netflix whilst i’ve been settling into my summer accommodation 

Unpopular opinion: avocado is DISGUSTENG, i guess i’m a fake veggie

Are you scared of bugs?: i pretend that i’m not but if there’s a spider in my room, even after my housemates have removed it i’ll refuse to sleep in there 

Dogs or cats?: i like to say i love all animals but dogs for sure 

Are you allergic to any foods?: no but celery is the devil 

Does the description of your star sign match your personality?: i’m a libra, and i CAN be very indecisive, i also think of massive ideas for my creative writing, or big lifestyle choices/ideas without conjuring the finer details, so yeah i would say i match it  

Favourite type of accent?: irish and northern irish 8)))

Name the first song that comes into your head!: supersonic by oasis 

Who is the sexiest famous person to you?: this doesn’t give me much leeway but i’ll go with kit harington 

When was the last time you read an entire book?: last week! i do literature and creative writing at uni and i’ve been working through my reading list for final year 

Favourite junk food: pizza if it’s like the PROPER DOUGH, you know what i mean 

Do you like your height?: i don’t like not being able to KISS PEOPLE COMFORTABLY without a step ladder but i would rather be this short than taller 

Apples or oranges?: apples but the crunchy kind, nee yan likes a soft apple 

Do you like salad?: AYE WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE?

What person inspires you the most?: to be honest, i don’t really think of people inspiring me, but i love my dad lots and i’m very proud of what he’s achieved, so i’d have to say him!

What is a song that has made you cry?: when i listen to songs, without sounding weird, i think about what it makes me feel like or WHERE it makes me feel like i should be, or what i should be doing, like for instance i can listen to tlsp and i’d just be like i aM staNDiNg oN aN ITALIAN STREET CORNER... meaning i cry to tons of songs when i drift off like that

It’s ShadowMonkeys Big Bang Day! 🎉🥳🥰

I’m so excited to see everyone’s creations! Here’s the first chapter of my Big Bang fic - it feels so strange to finally be sharing it after all these months 😅

Summary: 

‘After a bitter argument with Miles results in their sudden break-up, Alex finds himself standing in the lobby of a failing Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino, retaining little memory of how he got there and nursing an intense hangover.

As he resigns himself to an impromptu stay in a hotel which was once his pride and joy, he soon realises that all is not as it seems. Indecipherable whispers call to him from the dark, occasionally resembling the cries of his loved ones. The scattered guests who linger in the hallways all resemble people from Alex’s past, yet betray no hint of recognition upon meeting his gaze. Echoes of Miles follow him around like a ghost, disappearing long before Alex can hold him in his arms.

As the events unfolding around him become more and more unexplainable, Alex must use what's left of his fragile wits to uncover TBHC’s mysteries and plan his escape, before the hotel destroys his sanity and ensnares him within its walls forever...’
