I don't wanna jump the gun just yet and call this foreshadowing, this was clearly played off for the lolz, but I have a nagging feeling this is implying something much, much darker

It's clear that Jax said the part about the egg white* involuntarily, since he doesn't want to play this vegan bit whatsoever. But his sentence at the end; "I thought Caine couldn't..."

"... control us"??

Imagine that. They're trapped against their will, they can never go home, they're forced into stressful and scary adventures every day, but at the very least they still have free will. At least they can choose what they say and do (puppeteer employee re-evaluations aside)

Only, they can't. That can be taken away from them as well.

And Zooble knew it.

Remember this brief convo in the previous episode;

"The only thing holding Caine back is the fact that he likes us. I wouldn't push it."

ZOOBLE KNOWS SOMETHING.

Most likely they may just be wiser and/or more perceptive than most, fully comprehending the scope of Caine's powers in the circus and knowing that they're all hanging on by the threads that Caine is clutching. Or, possibly, they may have been witness to this "punishment" they mention. This may be the real reason they never go on adventures. Not cuz they just can't be fucked (tho probably true) but because they figure "If I don't do anything, I can't do anything wrong/worth punishing"

They know what Caine is capable of, and how it can be weaponized. In that sense, they were actually very forgiving to only ask for Jax to be vegan for the day as punishment for pretending to eat Gangle. I think between episode 4 & 5 we're seeing Jax come to that realization as well. It's clear that in his own way, he trusted Caine wouldn't hurt him or force him to do anything against his will, and was proven wrong twice.

Like I said, this might be foreshadowing for something later on, it might just be subtext you're meant to stew over as I have. Either way, its clear that Caine has greater capacity for evil, or at least immense harm, than most of them realize.

*also, since when do whiskey sours have egg whites?? I looked it up thinking it was a joke, but no, this is a cocktail with egg in it, wtf. Tho technically, according to google if it has an egg white it's a Boston sour, but same diff

I don’t post on Tumblr often but I felt like getting this out - funnily enough all because of a likely joke response. Ah well. I’ll continue the tradition of making elaborate backstories based on minimal information 💪

Anyway, here’s some background to Jax’s life and upbringing. Call it a headcanon or AU or whatever you feel is best

The purple rabbit individual later known as "Jax" to the circusgoers was born between 1973 and 1982 in Wabash, Indiana, to a Lutheran Protestant family of five, of which he was the middle child of two other brothers whom he got along well with. The family took only a nominal approach to religion to their children in terms of traditions passed down, something that their mother and father would, on occasion, regret doing whenever their sons got into trouble. The small family farm was agricultural in nature, rather than focused on livestock, producing mainly corn as well as carrots and other assorted produce. Due to Wabash’s town-city setting making for easy profit to farmers markets and other retailers, the family were decently well off, as far as single farm households went.

The “corn incident” as it is aptly called, refers to an instance in which the family dog - a Doberman Pinscher named “Bruno” - developed rabies, unbeknownst to the family. Jax and his brothers (ages 15, 17, and 19) stumbled upon the canine after it had killed a stray cat past the fencing. Upon seeing that their beloved pet had gone rabid, the three bolted in different directions through the family cornfield. The dog alternated between the three, causing a warped ironic twist on the game of cat and mouse - in which Jax had to hide from the beloved family dog-turned rabid mongrel, attempting to stifle his breathing over the sound of his pounding heart. For him, few things would terrify him more afterwards.

Though their father was able to regrettably put the dog down with relative ease once his boys eventually scampered out of the vegetative maze, the feeling of helplessness in the thick underbrush of the cornstalks never truly left Jax. Perhaps he developed a fear of mazes, rather than corn; but he never did go back into the cornfield again, much to the teasing of his brothers and chagrin of his folks, who were from then on one pair of hands short on that chore.

1 AM ramble but someone just pointed out to me you can see zooble's room in their pin wrapping background

not only do we get to see what their room looks like, we also get an official look of the zooble box, and a mirror for them to look at themself. now I think this might be important. pomni had a scene in ep 1 where she looks at the mirror in disbelief that she looks like that now, and we know zooble changes their parts every day. I think caine did that to "help" zooble with figuring out their gender identity, which maybe or not be helping, considering what I hear of people experiencing gender dysphoria not liking to see themselves in the mirror.

and I do think the mirror is important, we get to see a little bit of the others' bedrooms as well, kaufmo, ragatha and gangle's, and none of them have mirrors from what I can see. maybe caine noticed pomni looking in the mirror and thought pomni might want one in her room just like zooble, not realizing pomni probably hates to look in the mirror and not see herself

also lets look at the other characters bedrooms

ragatha seems to be very tidy (assuming everyone has to clean up their rooms and considering how messy pomni's room is) and not have that much stuff. a box of toys that she might or not play with considering its positioned as a seat for the piano. we dont know if she knows how to play (according to goose she knows the cello, so she could know the piano as well) and having so little fingers in her hand might actually not let her play the piano properly. caine could have just heard she likes music and put a piano in her room. also notice the piano is in the middle of the room taking center stage and we cant see a bed (yet). ragatha has mentioned nobody needs to sleep even though they can. do you think she (tries to) play the piano at night while everyone else assumedly sleeps? there is a song sheet at the piano but I cant read if it has an actual song name written on it.

also she has a shelf full of things that might be of her interest or template things caine put there. like balls of yarn, books, a gloink (how did she have a gloink before ep 1?) and a framed picture, which if it has an actual photo of someone there could open up a lot of theories to who is there. also the gloink being there points to either ragatha having already lived through a gloink adventure and keeping one in her room or keeping one after an adventure where she was hurt by kaufmo and abandoned by pomni. why would she want to keep it if thats the case?

gangle's room is very dark with black walls. we cant see much but I believe she is in a really deeper depression than pomni. I believe to the point where she doesnt have the energy to try to escape, just mask as much as she can before her happy mask is broken again, poor gangle :/

we dont get to see kinger or jax's room, even though I think there is a kinger door in the corridor. maybe kinger is too paranoid to sleep in his room. jax's only shows his door with the void breaking into view. maybe we wont get to see his room until the very end. also I remember there was a theory jax knows where the exit is, but doesnt leave. I dont think its true considering goose said jax deserves to be stuck in the circus, implying he cant leave just like everyone, but since he "has keys to everywhere", what if he has been to the void without caine knowing? pomni never made it through the end but if jax did, maybe what he saw there pushed him to be how he is now. maybe he doesnt see hope in escaping and thats why he turns into such a bad person, he could be a nihilist in that way

anyway sorry for the long post, I just had a bunch of ideas popping up in my head from this little detail I should have noticed when pomni's pin was released

not only do we get to see her room but we also see the blocks spelling CBA, not sure if the B is supposed to count or not but its the second time pomni is associated with C&A, I do believe she was an employee there

Sparky - She was a girl who was just an absolute pick me. She radiated toxic positivity, she was like the mean popular girl, think of Ocean O’conell from Ride the Cyclone or Regina George from Mean Girls. She was two faced, passive aggressive, and talked shit about everyone behind everyone’s back.

Reason she abstracted: Queenie called her out on her bullshit and everyone agreed they felt the same, Sparky felt alone and worthless, cue abstraction.

Kaufmo - Was a loveable clown and always made jokes and acts for the others. He was a typical clown, with an over the top Roger Rabbit like voice. At first the others enjoyed his acts, as it was a nice distraction from the day’s traumatic adventure, same for him, he often used humour to cope with his trauma and eventually, his “jokes” became self deprecating and condescending to others, which then led to jabs and passive aggressive remarks of the others actions. He soon grew bitter of his friends, and the circus in general, finally seeing the hell that it was.

Reason he abstracted: After becoming more bitter and bitter over the years, his jokes declined and drove a wedge between himself and his friends, leaving him alone in his thoughts.

Was very fun to be around, despite her grandeur, she had a youthfulness to her. Was very competitive and hated losing to anyone.

Reason she abstracted: Over the years, the pressure of being “Queen” got to her head and became narcissistic, truly believing she was the queen of not only the circus, but the world, she thought the world revolved around her and everyone was but a mere peasant in her eyes, even Kinger would be afraid of her wrath. If anyone were to dare disobey her, a world of hell would be brought upon them, she’d make their life a living hell and never forgive them. But once Jax destroyed her garden to “humble” her, she lost it, demanding that Jax fix it at once but Jax only told her, “This is just a game, and your status means nothing here” she abstracted on the spot. Kinger has never trusted him since.

I had to. I have feelings about this man & the rest of the 'foolish assortment of colourful characters' (under the cut).

The short version of it is this; I love morally grey to worse characters like him, they are cathartic and thus fun, and show us what (a decent into) evil truly means. Like a wakeup call after being a little bit too coddled in a candy cane sunshine dream of what the world is.

That being said; The Digital Circus seems to be risk-free as far as we can tell, it's LARPing and Jax knows it, even the others seem to be mostly desensitized due to a lack of real-world consequences (aside from Kinger who did try to help Pomni yet not a single one of them spoke up during Jax waving a shotgun while snapping at Gangle). And how about Team Mom Ragatha, who talks so much about how she cares about Pomni's feelings... where was she when the Jester needed help?

Strangely, this goes mostly unaddressed purely because Jax treats the Digital Circus like the game it is, completely forgoing he's playing it with his teammates who are actual human souls with actual human minds and feelings. I think he might have been there too long, maybe even since quite a young age? It seems he lost his empathy because of being uploaded, or maybe he barely had any, to begin with. It doesn't help that Caine keeps updating the AI, he wasn't wrong with how confusing this also can get.

At this point, what makes the gang any different from the AI, aside from the risk of abstraction? Aren't they all code now? What does it even mean anymore when an NPC gets the 'Thanos snap', even if they're fortunate enough to be (most likely reset and) 're-used'? Maybe Jax had tried connecting, tried bonding only to find out it was completely futile, and everything is pointless anyway.. and now all he has left might be the thrill-seeking to hold on to some shred of sanity.

My point is; Maybe they're all a little nutty, hey? And Jax's reaction to his environment then seems pretty understandable to me due to the eternal simulated hellscape and desensitization which is sure to follow.
