Visitors from China
A couple of weeks ago, maybe less, I met a guy Liu Xi, who works as a translator for Chinese visitors. It is a bit more complex than that though. I met him via Jonen-san a monk at Komyoji temple. I have spoken of him before here. He was out doing Takuhatsu in Nara, playing shakuhachi. A group from China heard him playing and stopped to listen, he then spoke with them. This group was followers of…

Salarymen doing their morning workout was a surprise sight when we arrived in Nara. After that, a beautiful park, dears moving freely everywhere around, a huge Buddha statue, a vivid market and the first takuhatsu monk we encountered in Japan. The ‘all you can eat’ yakiniku ath the end of the day was a delight!

Buddha Enso (top), Dragon Enso (middle), and Mind Enso (bottom) by Kasumi Bunsho
“Kasumi Bunsho was an important and prolific Zen calligrapher. Bunsho's work was influenced by two major Zen teachers: Nantembo (1839–1925) and Deiryu (1895–1954). In particular, he shared Nantembo's fondness for the subject of lines of monks, wearing their large circular hats, going out on their begging rounds. This begging practice (takuhatsu) is intended to instill humbleness and gratitude in the monks, and give lay people the opportunity to practice generosity. Kasumi Bunsho literally enlarged this subject by painting what might be considered murals on the walls of Kaisei-ji, which serve as a constant reminder of the importance of takuhatsu.”

Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

JAPAN FACT 1- Common Religion
The majority of Japan doesn’t believe in one specific religion, however they usually combine aspects of several religions into their everyday lives.
A lot of modern Japanese people consider themselves not to be religious but do continue to follow certain tradings and ways of behaving which gives japan and the majority of Asia to have the unique aesthetic compared to Western countries.

Anjikan and SuiZen = Esoteric Ro SuiZen, p.1
In previous posts, I spoke of my Pilgrimage to Mt. Koyasan in Wakayama, Japan. The purpose was twofold, to experience Shingon Anjikan meditation and to revisit another temple I stayed at a couple of years ago, to recharge my Spirit. While experiencing Anjikan I came upon the idea of how to adapt some of the techniques, and philosophy to Shakuhachi SuiZen. Many theory’s are floating around about…

ZenCafe – April 23’
Outside the temple,Shakuhachi’s haunting notes,Komuso’s soul soars. So many things one makes plans and imagines but does not often go that way. Life really is all about adapting to the flow. In sailing one adjusts their sails to with wind. My plan was to start at the temple for my monthly Duty. I was to have a Tai Chi class in the morning, then progress on to doing Takuhatsu in front of the…
