How to Travel Into Bath City Centre (Without Paying for Parking)
Tumblr media
Whether you live or work in Bath, or regularly travel to the city centre, you’ll know that our beautiful city isn’t the best for public transport.
With the arrival of the Clean Air Zone, it’s become a little trickier for travellers (particularly businesses) who need to get to Bath but aren’t keen on paying inflated parking charges or emission zone penalties.
Now, we’re clearly going to favour our innovative, budget-friendly Swoop ride-hailing service, but to give you an informed view of the options, we’ll cover here all the ways to travel to Bath!
Why Is Bath Parking and Public Transport So Bad?
There are two big questions here (which we hope to have answered!), but the reality is that Bath, as great a city as it is to live in, simply isn’t large enough to warrant a comprehensive public transport system or any real expansion on the city centre roads.
Even though Bath is the second most visited city tourist destination nationwide, there are only around 100,000 residents when the summer has passed.
That’s about a fifth of neighbouring Bristol, which makes it very hard to attract big-name ride-hailing apps or taxi firms to the city, with such a lucrative, higher populated cousin right around the corner!
However, if you need to get to college, uni, work, or one of our world-famous attractions, there are several options.
Parking in Bath City Centre
If you look hard enough, you might be lucky to snag a free parking space, although they’re only available between 8 pm and 8 am (you’ll be very fortunate to find any free daytime parking!).
Visitors and workers can use Broad Street, Avon Street, Charlotte Street or Manvers Street car parks for free, but that’s only applicable if you work a night shift.
Street parking is even more unusual, but you might be able to locate a space on Cleveland Walk (about 0.8 miles from the centre) or Milton Avenue (0.9 miles) – that’s around a 20-minute walk, so fine if you have comfy shoes, but not so suitable for many.
The issue with street parking is that it’s equally only free during unsociable hours – mostly from 7 pm to 8 am or only on Sundays; not quite so handy if you have a meeting to get to!
Spending a day sightseeing gets pretty expensive if you’re paying £15 or above for parking (plus fuel), and some of the short-stay car parks don’t permit you to keep your car there for over four or six hours, so choose wisely!
You can review all the up-to-date parking charges via the Bath & North East Somerset Council website.
Travelling to Bath by Train
Our next option is to take the train – almost certainly your go-to if you are visiting from further afield!
The downside is that you have one choice and one only – Bath Spa.
Only one railway travels here (Great Western) although you can travel from London Paddington, Portsmouth Harbour and Cardiff Central.
There are also tons of connections with Bristol, so Bath acts as a stop-gap because you can be in Bristol in about ten minutes, delays and cancellations notwithstanding.
Unfortunately, train travel is only possible if you’re coming from elsewhere outside the city; there are no intra-city trains or metros, connection routes or tubes, so it’s impossible to get into Bath by train without needing an onward solution.
If you’re interested in walking, it’s only about half a mile into the centre, which takes around ten minutes depending on the weather and where you’re heading.
Coach Travel Into Bath
The other potential option is to use the National Express coach system, with the bus station relatively close to the train station, but the same limitations apply.
You can take a coach from Bristol, Reading, Exeter, Plymouth or London Victoria, but it’ll take several hours longer than a train, and you’ll still need to take a walk or taxi to get to the city centre.
Booking a Cab Into Bath City Centre
Our most convenient option is to order a taxi, but there is a huge demand for a small number of cab companies (you won’t find the likes of Uber or Lyft in such a small city!).
The Fare Car service is a great choice for budget-conscious travellers.
Still, it is massively limited, with bookings required by a cut-off and only one route and drop-off and pick-up point, which makes it suitable only for people who happen to live or work in the immediate vicinity and along the route.
Over the last two years, a shortage of experienced local drivers, closure of cab firms and ever-inflating prices have made it difficult to take a taxi in Bath.
If you’re a regular visitor, you’ll be familiar with the lengthy taxi rank queues that don’t bode well if you’re on a time limit!
Swoop – the New Bath Ride-Hailing System
We live in Bath and love everything about our historic, laid-back city – but the transport situation needed something fresh!
Welcome Swoop Bath Taxi Services, a forward-thinking taxi app that works just like those super-convenient services you’ll find elsewhere but specific to Bath and the local Somerset area.
Why is Swoop better than another taxi company in bath also public transport option?
You get a verified, vetted driver, door to door.
Book your cab line – no phone calls or queues to speak of.
Convenient payments; pay with a card, PayPal or Apple Pay as suits you best.
Although Bath has long been a brilliant destination, it’s also been a nightmare for travellers, and we’re proud to have developed a solution suited to the needs of our small but mighty city.
Next time you’re comparing train fares, scouting around for a pricey parking space or deciding whether to take the long walk from the bus station, why not Swoop instead – we’re confident it’ll be the best option going.

Why You Should Hire Hire Best Gatwick Airport To Plymouth Port Taxi transfer
Tumblr media
If you're traveling to the UK and need transportation from Gatwick Airport to Plymouth Port, you want to make sure you hire the best UK taxi transfer service available. There are many options to choose from, but not all taxi transfer services are created equal. Here are some tips on how to hire the best Gatwick Airport to Plymouth Port taxi transfer service.
Look for Experience
Experience is one of the most important factors to consider when hiring a taxi transfer service. Look for a company that has been in business for a while and has a good reputation. Experienced taxi transfer companies will have a better understanding of the area and will be able to provide better service.
Check for Licensing and Insurance
if you choose taxi from gatwick South Terminal Make sure the taxi transfer service you choose is licensed and insured. Licensing ensures that the company meets certain standards and is authorized to operate in the area. Insurance protects you in case of any accidents or damages that may occur during the transfer.
Look for Professionalism
Professionalism is essential when hiring a taxi transfer service from Gatwick North terminal. Look for a company that has professional drivers who are knowledgeable, courteous, and respectful. Professionalism also includes having clean, well-maintained vehicles and being punctual.
Read Reviews
One of the best ways to gauge the quality of a taxi transfer service is to read reviews from past customers. Look for reviews on the company's website, as well as on independent review sites like Yelp or TripAdvisor. Pay attention to what people are saying about the quality of the service, the condition of the vehicles, and the professionalism of the drivers.
Compare Prices
Finally, it's important to compare prices between different taxi transfer services. However, don't choose a company based solely on price. You want to make sure you're getting the best value for your money, which means finding a company that offers a fair price for high-quality service.
In conclusion, hiring the best Gatwick Airport to Plymouth Port taxi transfer service requires a bit of research and due diligence. Look for an experienced company that is licensed and insured, has professional drivers and vehicles, and has positive reviews from past customers. And don't forget to compare prices to find the best value for your money. With these tips in mind, you can ensure a safe, comfortable, and hassle-free transfer to your destination. feel free to ignore/delete this if you dont want to answer. i was curious about how you feel about your university experience and the university as a whole, and whether you think it is worth attending. sorry if this is really broad, im looking into peoples opinions about different universities as a potential international student.
Hello! Since this question is fairly broad I'll try to break it down into a couple of points.
I did my MA in English Literary Studies at the University of Exeter and overall it was one of the best experiences of my life.
Education: I did a Taught MA which meant that I had to attend weekly seminars, lectures, and writing workshops (optional) before finally writing my dissertation. The classes are discussion based for the most part and allow for more critical thought and analysis of the assigned texts. It is fairly independent, as I’m told that is the general experience of education in the UK. You’re expected to do the readings before each class and to do the bulk of research by yourself. It can be a little daunting if you’re not used to it. But it is understood that, as international students, we might have had a very different learning experience and might need a little extra help. In case you need help with your writing or are struggling in class, there are many resources available for international students and both staff and faculty are very supportive and willing to help out anytime during office hours.
Extra Curricular: there are a variety of clubs and organizations catering to student interest, everything from hiking, scrabble, books/movies, LGBTQ+, knitting, sports, IT, etc. Everyone I’ve met has been very welcoming and friendly. It might take a couple of tries, but you eventually find people with similar interests and hobbies.
Resources: the library is very well stocked with print, electronic, and other media resources. There are also archival manuscripts available at the Exeter Cathedral archives that you can visit. In case you need more resources, you can also check out the local Exeter Library, etc.
Application: the application process was very smooth. The application office was very helpful anytime I had any questions about funding/scholarships, or accommodations, etc. They promptly answered my questions and helped me fill out my form and get the required documents and basically guided me throughout the application process. Once I was accepted into the university, the staff helped me with my accommodations, bank details, visa applications, part-time job applications, and in getting acclimated to the new university environment.
Accommodations: I lived at Nash Groove (graduate residence) on campus and while it wasn’t the most expensive place it was a very clean, quiet place to live in away from the noise and bustle of the undergraduate dorms. We even had a cleaner come in to clean out the kitchen and shared living space once a week. There are also some accommodations with a meal service though I opted out of that one.
Campus Location and Security: Exeter is a university town so it's mainly populated by college students around the city center and campus area, most of which are international students. The campus is sprawling and pretty huge interspersed between town buildings. The city center is conveniently located just about a 30 min walk from the main campus building (15 min bus ride) and has all the necessities. It's a small town but I really loved it. They have a diverse mix of bookstores, pubs, grocery stores, malls, and shopping spaces. If you're like me and like old architecture there is plenty to see here.
Exeter was one of the safest places I’ve lived in. There are security patrolling the campus at all times. Buses and trains run till around 11 pm and are fairly cheap. Taxis are available at all times and in case of an emergency when you don’t have money to pay for it you can just leave them your student id number and pay it back later at the forum.
Mental Health: I think this is the only area of complaint I would have about my university experience. While it is advertised as being very accommodating, the mental health support at Exeter University leaves a lot to be desired. Same with the medical facility on campus. Unless you’re dying, you would have to make an appointment well in advance for any ailments you’re suffering from.
All in all I've had the smoothest University experience and would definitely recommend University of Exeter if you’re looking for a college to do your higher education at. It is fairly diverse and very supportive of international students so I never felt out of place and had one of the best educational experiences.
Hope this answers your question!

Douglas C-47B Dakota ‘G-ANAF’
flickr
Douglas C-47B Dakota ‘G-ANAF’ by Alan Wilson Via Flickr: c/n 33436/16688. Built 1944. Allocated US military serial 44-77104. RAF serial ‘KP220’. Airworthy and operated by Air Atlantique as a radar trails aircraft, it is currently being converted back to a passenger aircraft for possibly charter work and pleasure flights. I have a vivid personal memory of this particular ‘Dak’. We were at Luton Airport back in 1978 and although I lived 10 miles from Duxford I had never (knowingly) seen a Dakota. However, even as an 8-year old there was no mistaking that head-on silhouette as what was clearly a Dakota lined-up on the approach, still miles away. “It’s a Dakota, it’s a Dakota” I called excitedly, to be told something along the lines of “it can’t be” or “don’t be silly”. However, a Dakota it was, and G-ANAF landed and taxied by, in full Air Atlantique markings. This moment was the beginning of the ‘Hawkeye’ nickname which has been proven again and again over the years, and (I like to think) still applies today. Many years later, I am delighted that my first ‘Dak’ is still flying. She is seen here under maintenance in the display hangar at ‘Coventry - Airbase’, Coventry Airport, UK 11-10-2015 The following info is from the Classic Air Force website:- “G-ANAF (affectionately referred to as ‘Ganaph’ by the Classic Flight team and volunteers) began life in 1944. Built at Douglas Aircraft’s Santa Monica plant in California it was issued the USAAF serial 44-77104 and taken on charge in June 1945, just after the end of the war in Europe. With a diminished need for transport aircraft the aircraft was immediately transferred to the Royal Air Force and became KP220. After six months in Canada, KP220 arrived in the UK where it joined the strength of 435Sqn Royal Canadian Air Force, coded OFM-R, and operated from the old Croydon Airport. After a year of mundane duties KP220 was selected to become the personal aircraft of the Air Officer Commanding 46 Group RAF. She was clearly in good condition as it was later moved to RAF Bassingbourn (the wartime home of the B-17 Memphis Belle) and allocated to 24 (VIP) Sqn. It was coded ODA-H and served with the squadron until it was finally retired in November 1950. Like so many ex-RAF Dakotas KP220 was flown 22 Maintenance Unit (MU) at Silloth in Cumbria where it awaited its eventual fate. Unlike many of its compatriots KP220 was saved from the scrap man and after a period of storage at Silloth she was purchased by a BKS Aerocharter Ltd in June 1953. The same month she appeared on the British< civil register as G-ANAF and was named ‘Jean Batten’ in recognition of the famous aviatrix. The company was later renamed BKS Air Transport Ltd and they operated ‘Alpha Fox’ until November< 1958 when she was sold to Hunting Aero Surveys Ltd (later Hunting Surveys & Consultants Ltd). Hunting operated G-ANAF until April 1973 but it wasn’t until March 1977 that it was finally registered to its subsequent owner - Westcountry Aircraft Servicing Ltd at Exeter. They didn’t hang onto the aeroplane for long though because in October of the same year it was transferred to the up and coming Air Atlantique Ltd! Air Atlantique initially used the aeroplane on ad hoc charter work but it eventually found its niche delivering the mail on a contract from the Post Office. G-ANAF continued in this role under the Air Atlantique banner until June 1985 when the post contract – and G-ANAF – were transferred to subsidiary company Air Luton. It was reportedly operated for a short period by Topflight Aviation Company Ltd but the aircraft was never registered to that company, which in any event ceased trading in 1987. Later in 1987 interest was expressed in G-ANAF by an American company called the Starflite Corporation. The Miami-based company got as far as registering the aircraft as N170GP but the sale subsequently fell through and G-ANAF stayed in Britain. She returned to the British civil register – this time registered to Atlantic Air Transport Ltd (part of the Air Atlantique Group). After many years successfully plying her trade as a freighter G-ANAF was selected to be converted for use in Radar trials. A large radome was designed and fitted beneath her ‘chin’ and a variety of external aerials adorn the fuselage. On board test equipment was fitted within the cabin and the aircraft has been used< successfully to test Radar systems developed by both Racal and Thales. An auxiliary power unit was also fitted to the side of the fuselage when the internal power supply was found to be inadequate to run the increasingly powerful Radar sets. Today G-ANAF is finished in a stunning red and black colour scheme and continues to earn her keep as a dedicated trials aircraft.”

Does everyone in Devon hate tourists or just you?
Yep. August for locals is pretty much "hibernate and keep your head down, and with any luck, we might make it to September." It's worse this year because of the difficulty going abroad and a lot of people don't want to risk it. Truthfully, on any given day 95% of tourists are fine. On any given August day, that goes to about 80%. August always brings out the cranks.
People who are on holiday and want a good time? I really enjoy having those people around. Because they WANT to be there and are there to have fun.
People who would rather be in Spain and don't understand why Dartmoor doesn't have a 24 hour pub/bar/club next to the hotel? They irritate me. You either KNOW what facilities Devon has before you book, or you're stupid. (Though, the amount of people who DONT google map where the hotel is ASTOUNDS me. A family last week thought we were twenty miles west of where we actually are, and their family they wanted to meet up with didn't drive.)
Like... no, we don't have taxi services. Uber and deliveroo don't even operate in any postcode anywhere near here. The "remote countryside" is why you're here, and that comes with convenience costs. I would LOVE a McDonalds nearer than a 30 mile round trip, but that's not what Dartmoor is about. Hell, I'd love a decent hairdresser closer than Exeter, but that doesn't happen either.
So how about you quit yelling at the person at the hotel who a) didn't book it, and b) didn't look up anything about the location before travelling. On the phone I've TOLD people not to book it if they're looking for a beach side hotel, given them some other examples, and then they book it with us, and THEN give us a 1/5 trip advisor because we aren't at the beach. Like... how is that ANY of our faults? We told you not to book it. I can give you advice about the best places to see in Dartmoor, Haytor, Meldon reservoir, Postbridge, Yes Tor, whatever. But we're NOT NEAR A BEACH.
Tourists who appreciate what Devon/Cornwall is? They're fun. The minority who want city services / theme parks from us? They're not fun.

How to Choose Best Heathrow To Sheffield Taxi transfer Company
Tumblr media
Traveling from Heathrow Airport to Sheffield can be a daunting task, especially if you are unfamiliar with the area. Public transportation options can be confusing and time-consuming, while driving yourself can be stressful, not to mention the added expense of parking. One of the best options for a hassle-free and comfortable journey is to hire a Heathrow to Sheffield taxi transfer.
However, choosing the right taxi transfer company is crucial to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. Here are some tips to help you hire the best Heathrow Airport taxi transfer:
Check the reputation of the taxi transfer company: Before booking your taxi, check the reputation of the company online. You can read reviews and ratings from other customers on platforms like Google, TripAdvisor, or Trustpilot. It is also worth checking if the company has won any awards or certifications for their service.
Check the range of vehicles available: Make sure that the taxi transfer company has a range of vehicles available to suit your needs. If you are traveling alone, a standard taxi will be sufficient, but if you are traveling with a group or have a lot of luggage, a larger vehicle like a minibus or a luxury car may be more appropriate.
Check the level of comfort: Comfort should be a top priority when selecting a taxi transfer service. Ensure that the company provides comfortable and well-maintained vehicles. Check if they have air conditioning, leather seats, and ample legroom.
Check the experience of the drivers: Your safety should be paramount when traveling in a taxi. Check the experience and qualifications of the drivers. Are they licensed and insured? Do they have good driving records? Experienced and professional drivers will ensure that your journey is smooth and stress-free.
