Started The Case of the Golden Idol last night and finished it and the DLCs this morning, and golly, what a great game!
I've got a bunch of miscellaneous thoughts but mostly I wanted to share the ~notes~ I had written. The fact that it was a good game for taking notes was precisely why I wanted to play it in the first place, and it didn't disappoint. Figured that there are some folks out there that would enjoy seeing them.
Hell, I'm a La-Mulana lover, I *know* there are other sickos who salivate and eyes-emoji over this kinda stuff. Got ~5 pages~ of it, babyy

Nerd alert
I am currently working on a soon-to-be thesis about immersion in video games and I just finished playing the Case of the Golden Idol, and boy I got plenty of material for my research !
The Case of the golden Idol is a detective indie game taking inspiration from other detective indie game Return of the Obra Dinn, and it shows: In both games, you explore static scenes and gather clues to discover the truth and input the correct terms in the correct spots in the Magic Video Game Box to succeed.
Only Return of the Obra Dinn is way more immersive and interesting to me in the context of my research, and in general as a video game that's breaking new grounds.
The key difference between the two games is the presentation : ROTOB is a first person game akin to a walking simulator, where the player movement is fairly free, while their actions are suite restricted. TCOTGI on the other hand is a 2D game composed of clickable panels with a set number of hints to gather (signaled by small helper flashes to make sure you don't miss them)
Player freedom is *much more important* in obra dinn. You have control of your avatar, you can move wherever you want (in the limits of the game, of course) and you can look where you please in the 3D space, most of the time. The game does not highlight key hints, primarily because you have to Find them, and before that you may even have to realise you have to search for them.
You also have much more freedom in the answers you give, your options to explain a given scenario being the exact same at the start of the game to the end of it.
In contrast with the golden idol were you can only see what there is for you to see, and only input the level specific hints in the level specific boxes to find the level specific solution. You know a hint when you see one, and the game gives you everything you need to come to the solution you have to find.
This does not make The Case of the golden Idol a bad game by any means, it was very good, and even more so if you consider if was made by around four people. But it does seem to confirm my suspicions that freedom goes a long way towards feeling immersion in games, and it can go from "being able to walk around freely" to "not being restrained in your inputs"

Tcotgi thingies ^^ requests welcome.. I have the game on mobile which is where I took these from. Gifs are not transparent. The same color as the background being used on the sprites sometimes makes it too difficult
