"Yesterday's" Comic> The Solution #2
BW's "Yesterday's" Comic> The Solution #2
“Quick, we must help that woman with her crossword puzzle!” I’m not promising that every cover caption gag isn’t making fun of their name…at least unless the comic gets more interesting before I’m out of “essential” issues according to my list. The S0lution #2 Malibu Comics/Ultraverse (October, 1993) “Showdown” WRITER: James Hudnall PENCILER: Darick Robertson INKER: Mike Miller COLORING: Tim…

This is actually a campaign idea that I've wanted to run for a long time!
There's something called an Alderson Disk, that I first read about in Charlie Stross's novella, Missile Gap. A massive disk orbiting a powerful gravity well, like a star or black hole, with 50 million times the habitable surface area of the Earth.

Larry Niven suggested that the disk "would be a wonderful place to stage a gothic or sword and sorcery novel. The atmosphere is right, and there are real monsters."
Travel east or west and you'll find endless oceans and continents, with every sort of people imaginable. Travel sunward or sunways and the climate becomes extreme, until it's that of a completely alien world.
Niven did get around to using the idea for, of all things, Malibu Comic's Ultraverse. In that, the Godwheel was an Alderson Disk where a high-tech civilization developed on one side, and a powerful race of magic-users developed on the other.
probably shitty worldbuilding idea: fantasy world that keeps going

Tubi added a cartoon series that couldn't be any less mid 90s. SKYSURFER STRIKEFORCE! Dont remember it? Dont worry barely anyone does. Made in 1995 but took over two years to air all 22 episodes due to poor budgets.

I once found a vhs tape of the pilot that was not supposed to be for sale but was being sent to buisnesses asking for them to join in on funding the show, the tapes points out how Long John Silvers was already on board to make promo toys. The show did air yet many episodes were rushed which is evident in sound mix issues in some episodes. The infamous rudy and Spears did the first 13 epusodes then the final ten were by Ashi in Japan which becomes very obvious, not just became episode 14 gains a wacky theme song and slow ending credits. Basically in plots right out of gi joe meets jayce and the wheeled warriors and c.o.ps, we get square jaws blonde stereotype hero SkySurfer One Jack Holiston who uses his missing fathers tech to make him and his friends into air surfboard riding super heros. With transformation scenes that will remind you of Power rangers and Reboot. But its the evil robot Cybron and his weird cyborg lackies that make this show. One of the villian is called Grenader and he is just a giant grenade man that blows up when he wants to. And he is also not even, the weirdest villian.

The heros are weird too with bad names like Air Enforcer, Sliced Ice , Crazy Stunts and Soar Loser..get it Soar? But still everyone calls him Loser, what the hell? Style thats so similar to the Wildcats and Ultraverse cartoons coming out at that time, which is funny cause those shows stunk and tanked too. I guess all of them just stole costume design from Xmen. Also fashionable mullets like 90s Superman. But as hokey and cheap as the show was it was still pretty epic. With episodes with giant killer ants, brain stealers in the alps, a time bubble to the 1920s and I love the episode where Sliced Ice is turned 50 feet tall and forced to attack everyone like a kaiju.

So if you need a stay in day to lounge on the couch and get stupid just get a bowl of cereal or smoke a bowl Or both and binge it for free on tubi and youtube

How would you fix Exiles then
It’s a troubled problem for me and that is down to Blink.
See, I think the Exiles needs Blink.
But I also think Generation X needs Blink (with is funny since she was never in a single issue of it).
Obviously, they are two different Blink’s and that’s the easy way around BUT I’ve always wanted to consolidate my Blink into a single character. It’s obvious that the AOA Blink from Exiles is the one with the fanbase, and Earth-616 Blink is mostly by virtue of it being the same person and by the tragedy of her premature death. I’d fuse them in some way… likewise for Mimic and Morph maybe. Although, there’s some story potential in Earth-616 Mimic trying to be as heroic and noble as his Exiles version. But I’ve never much been into the idea of multiple versions of the same character active at the same time (except like you know cases where it’s like Beast and Dark Beast or Kang and Immortus, etc.).
But after that long preamble.
I think a back to basics is the way forward for most books.
With Exiles, I’d try and bring together the popular characters from over the run of the books and end up with a team like:
Blink, Mimic, Morph, Nocturne, Sabretooth and X-Man with Heather Hudson on tech support.
All of them are the versions we already know. Mimic may/would/could be the Earth-616 version or a fusion of the two. I’m not a big fan of Nocturne, but I won’t fault her inclusion in Exiles. X-Man being there is actually a nod to the original plan of Exiles to include him (he was subbed pretty last minute for the similar looking and powered Magnus who was quickly elected to be sacrificed instead of the obvious choice of T-Bird) - though I have a similar problem where I also want X-Man on my Generation X. There are other Exiles characters I liked like Sunfire and Magik who both died but I won’t undo either death for the sake of it. Although, I considered roping in an alternate but almost identical version of Sunfire but it’s not worth it. Havok is someone else who I feel would really work on this team but I fucking can’t stand Havok so I’m not including him. My proposed line-up may seem a bit vanilla, but we’re re-establishing the team - not revamping them.
I think the World Tour arc would’ve been a fantastic way to kick off the book - having the team explore the most well known and popular alternate universes - but unfortunately it’s already been done. Instead, I’d do a World Tour arc but specifically travelling to realities from What If?’s. This is similar to an issue of Quasar, I know, but I think it could work. There are a few What If? realities that are definitely worth exploring. What If Atlantis Attacks is at the top of that list for me, there’s a What If Blink Didn’t Die which I’ve not read but it sounds insane (she becomes a Cosmic abstract!) and should definitely be visited, then there’s a few Age of Apocalypse variations that could be interesting to look at with these characters. I’ve not sat down and done up a list of What If issues or realities to look at. And while I’m at it, there was some important popular realities not done in the World Tour arc - Earth X, MC2, Ultraverse (ha), Days of Future Past (zzzzzzzz), Ultimate Universe, Marvel Zombies, Noir, Mutant X, Supreme Power, original Guardians timeline, Old Man Logan… some of these could be traveled to later on. In fact, there’s some many, I’m considering going back on my point and saying just do World Tour II... But either way after the initial Tour, it’d be important to start introducing and creating new realities.
Bad guys wise - and I think this is important with any team - the Exiles definitely need a couple of consistent baddies. Fortunately, their mandate and status quo means they don’t need as many as another team. There’s the very obvious one of the evil Hyperion as their big bad. I think, if he came back to life, Holocaust could also become a major recurring foe for them. He is almost purely just a physical threat to them. I’d introduce a Timebroker who is actually an antagonist for them. I’d also do a story featuring the Hunger from Thanos #1-6 - maybe he could even be the enemy for the What If Tour.
