From Hip Hop to Tech: How The Bronx is Quickly Becoming a New Hub for Entrepeneurs & NYC Startups
The #Bronx keeps creating it... our borough is becoming a hub for emerging entrepreneurs and tech startups but we gotta make sure our children and residents can partake of this growing industry.
The other day we posted a video on Bazaar, a Bronx-based tech company that’s using digital solutions to every day problems bodegas face.
But did you know that there is a growing tech scene right here in our borough?
Tech:NYC recently visited The Bronx and wrote about their time spent exploring this industry as they visited practically every corner of our borough.

As founding executive director of Tech:NYC, Julie Samuels is one of the state’s most prominent advocates for the tech sector, both in Albany and at City Hall.
Samuels, a lawyer by training, came to New York after serving as executive director of Engine, a San Francisco organization on which Tech:NYC is modeled. In an interview with TechCrunch, Samuels spoke about several issues, including her rationale for why, despite the controversy over Amazon’s decision not to build its second headquarters in Queens, the area is well-positioned for the next wave of tech innovation.
TechCrunch: What is the need for organizations like Tech:NYC and Engine?
Julie Samuels: As the tech industry matures, it is incredibly important that there are organizations [that] represent these companies politically, civically, making sure they have a seat at the table with so many public policy debates. There is no shortage of public policy debates surrounding technology.
It is also incredibly important that there are organizations who are talking from the viewpoint of smaller companies and startups. There are a lot of organizations that represent the biggest and most well-known companies, including Tech:NYC. But [we] also have hundreds of members who are small and growing startups. We think that diversity of the ecosystem is what really sets the technology sector apart and it is something we want to foster and celebrate.

New York Assemblyman Announces Creation of ‘First’ US Cryptocurrency Task Force

This post was originally published here

An assemblyman of the New York state (NYS) legislature announced in a Facebook post on Jan. 3 that the state will have the nation’s “first” cryptocurrency task force.
In the post, Clyde Vanel, an NYS assemblyman and Chair of Subcommittee on Internet and New Technologies, stated that New York became the first state in the United States (U.S.) to create a cryptocurrency task force aimed at studying the regulation, use, and definition of digital currency. The governor Andrew Cuomo signed the bill dubbed “The Digital Currency Study Bill” into law on Dec. 21, 2018.
Back in June, the banks committee of the NYS legislature voted to progress the bill to create a digital currency task force. The members of the task force — including technologists, consumers, investors, blockchain companies and academics — appointed by the governor, Senate, and Assembly will reportedly have to submit relevant reports by Dec. 15, 2020.
The report will study the impact of regulations on the development of digital currencies and blockchain industries within the state, the use of cryptocurrencies’ effect on local tax receipts, and the transparency of the digital currency marketplace.
Commenting on the initiative, Julie Samuels, executive director of a nonprofit organization representing New York City tech companies, Tech:NYC, said that “cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology will, without a doubt, greatly impact finance and many other industries across the globe for years to come.” Vanel stated:
“New York leads the country in finance. We will also lead in proper fintech regulation. The task force of experts will help us strike the balance between having a robust blockchain industry and cryptocurrency economic environment while at the same time protecting New York investors and consumers.”
Other states in the U.S. have introduced legislation to create government bodies to study the potential impact of the blockchain and crypto industries on state commerce. In June, Connecticut governor Dannel Malloy signed SB 443 into law, which established a blockchain working group to study the technology. The law also established time-frames for investigating and providing reports on the potential use of crypto in criminal activities.

We (And 2,000+ Other New York Techies) Oppose President Trump’s Travel Ban

Earlier this week, tech:nyc put together a letter to send to the White House opposing President Trump’s travel ban. As a company founded by immigrants, with employees who are immigrants themselves or children of immigrants, this legislation hit home for us. Needless to say, we were very quick in putting forward our signatures and in doing so, joining forces with thousands of others within the New York tech community who oppose this piece of dangerous legislation. After receiving over 2,000 signatures, the 60-page letter has officially been sent to the White House. Step one, of many, completed.

We’re still looking for more signatures, the more the better. Please sign it (if you haven’t done so already) and share it. Here are some suggested tweets:
I'm proud to join more than 2000 in the NYC tech community in opposition to the #ImmigrationBan. #ourNY www.technyc.org/TrumpEO
We stand with the NYC tech community and against the #ImmigrationBan #ourNY www.technyc.org/TrumpEO
Vox: Tech companies hate Trump’s immigration order. But much of corporate America doesn’t care.
TechCrunch: New York’s tech community pens letter condemning Trump’s immigration ban
Forbes: Uber CEO Travis Kalanick Joins NY Tech Leaders In Letter Opposing Immigration Ban
Yahoo News: Tech:NYC oppose Trump’s temporary immigration ban
Engadget: New York City tech leaders object to Trump immigration ban
NY Business Journal: N.Y.C.'s tech leaders pen letter opposing Trump's temporary immigration ban
Fortune: Hundreds of Tech Companies in New York Have Signed a Letter Against President Trump’s Immigration Ban
As New Yorkers, we find ourselves creating encounters with people from all over the world on a daily basis. Those interactions are what makes New York New York. It is our duty then, as New Yorkers, to stand together in order to make hatred and discrimination a thing of the past, for good.
