here's my rundown of all the new 2027 tech regulations:

the most important news is the reduction in engine capacity. the pistons are going to be reduced from 1000cc to 800cc, meaning they generate less power with each stroke. the bore of the pistons is also going to be reduced, which is the width of the piston head. the wide bores that have been in use for some time deliver more power, so reducing bore size means less fuel and air will be used with each stroke. this makes the bike slower, but more fuel efficient.

fuel efficiency has also been taken into account with the new gas tank and fuel regulations. gas tanks are being reduced from 22 to 20 liters for full races and from 11 to 10 for the sprint. essentially, since dorna has reduced bike power, they've reduced fuel capacity as well, since less fuel is needed.

this is where the new sustainable fuel comes in: the new fuel will be a mix of biofuel and synthetic, both of which have a lower power storage by volume compared to gas fuel. this will also reduce power. are you seeing a pattern?

the last time 800cc bikes were used in MotoGP, they were absolutely hated by riders. from 2007 to 2012, engine capacity was reduced from 990cc to 800cc for similar reasons as today; concerns about safety and overtaking. but the bikes were considered some of the worst to ride, due to low torque and inconsistent power delivery, meaning the bike performed best a very narrow rpm and throttle range -- step on the gas for just a milisecond longer, and you'd get shot off the bike. that made highsides much more frequent. mat oxley explains here:

attempts to mitigate the engine's problems with electronics also sacrificed power and overtaking.

sound familiar? right now, riders, stewards and engineers are all complaining about overdone electronics. this brings us to the next point revealed in the presentation, that holeshot and ride height devices will be banned.

these devices program the bike body to shift up and down under certain conditions, carrying momentum and reducing drag. holeshot devices specifically program the bike to start, resulting in the classic rocket-powered starts we see today. riders plant their feet, tuck their heads down, and let the bike do the rest. holeshot devices have their negatives, especially combined with heavy aero -- plenty of crashes occur in the first few corners of a race because the overpowered start combined with heavily engineered aero shoots a rider directly into another's rear tire. this is the sacrifice made for overtuning bikes so that they're perfectly optimized.

but notably, these changes don't mitigate crashes! despite claiming to prioritize safety, reducing power on its own does not reduce crashes. less torque = slower corner exit = riders prioritizing quicker roll speed and engineers seeking higher rpms. and less power = less braking = less overtakes.

none of this is to say that the original 800cc era was inexcusably terrible or that the new era will be as well. but i don't think liberty media or dorna understand what draws viewers to the sport. in the presentation, they justify most of these changes as making bikes more "road relevant", increasing mileage and sustainability. but world superbike already exists to fill that niche, making motogp obsolete in that sense. i'm all for safe and environmentally conscious racing, but as stated above, these new regulations don't make motogp more safe. they also don't make it more eco-friendly either; ethanol fuel is nice, but it's a drop in the ocean compared to the absurd emissions generated by transporting the entire traveling circus from racetrack to racetrack. if there's anything motogp can learn from wsbk, it's a reduced calendar. less travel means less emissions, and longer breaks gives riders time to recuperate from injuries.

in their attempts to make motogp a better entertainment product, liberty media are challenging the integrity of the sport. their unnecessary limitations ignore the true root of most problems -- overworked riders and teams and a bloated schedule -- and waste money in the process. constantly changing concessions and regulations forces manufacturers to spend more and more money developing new bikes; no wonder teams have been dropping out. these concessions don't help anyone but liberty, since they can claim they've "revolutionized" the sport and made it into a safe, sustainable overtake-fest. all they've really done is sanitize it.

Connecting & Innovating at TechDay 2024

I covered TechDay in New York this past Friday. This year was special because it was the 10th anniversary of TechDay. 

Over the past ten years, TechDay events have connected over 10,000 startups with over 250,000 investors, accelerators, engineers, suppliers, and other members of the tech startup ecosystem. This is according to TechDay. 

Attendees had the opportunity to network with venture capitalists, and accelerators, learn about the latest technology, and attend tech talks. 

These tech talks consisted of thought leaders from the NYC startup ecosystem, including investors with over $5 billion in combined assets under management. Thought leaders spoke on a series of panels focused on the history of the NYC startup ecosystem, its present opportunities, and possible futures

Entrepreneurs had the opportunity to audition to pitch their start-ups on Shark Tank. 

There were many exhibitors at TechDay as well. Companies were from a wide array of industries.

In this video, I walked the event floor to give you a sense of the things happening from networking, connecting, pitching, and learning.

Maddie: That was Bruce. He is an old college friend.

Maddie: Honey, we buried the hatchet with Bruce long ago. You're the only one still mad.

Jack: Of course I'm mad! He broke my best friend's heart!

Danny: What?

Maddie: *sigh* Bruce used to date Vlad, and for the longest time, Vlad convinced himself Bruce was going to propose. Then, out of the blue, Bruce dropped out of college and broke up with Vlad. Two days later, he left the country. Vlad was a mess, which made his accident seven months later even worse, especially when proof of Bruce having a new girlfriend two days BEFORE dumping Vlad came to light.

Jack: I knew he was a punk from the moment I saw him. He defened ghosts! Claim it was inhumane the way we studied them! But I didn't argue with him for Vlad's sake, only to find out he was cheating on my best buddy!

Maddie: Vlad said he let it go years ago, Jack. He found someone else to love. And Bruce apologized and prove those pictures were dotted.

Jack: He lies!

Danny: What do you think Mom?

Maddie: I think Bruce was telling the truth that he never cheated, but I don't think he ever took his relationship with Vlad as seriously as Vlad did. Bruce always felt like he was on the verge of leaving, like there was something restless right under his skin.

Danny: Thats-

Jazz bursting through the front door: OMG I JUST SAW BRUCE WAYNE!

Danny: What?! Where!?

Maddie: Sweetheart he just walked out of our house.

Danny: THAT was Bruce Wayne!? I've heard of him, but I've never seen his picture....wait Vlad, the FRUITLOOP, dated heartthrob playboy philanthropist billionaire Bruce Wayne!?

Jack: I know! Vladdie could do so much better!

Jazz: Literally how!?

during q1, simon mentioned that most teams run bikes with shorter swingarms during wet races.

for the uninitiated, the swingarm connects the rear suspension to the rear wheel. it also distributes weight to the rear, which is especially prescient in low-grip conditions.

a shorter swingarm is advantageous in the wet because it puts more weight on that back tire, generating more grip. on a street bike, this would increase wheelie and end up sacrificing speed. imagine the weight distribution of the bike like a scale; more weight on the back means the front is lighter, and has a higher chance to lift up.

however, racebikes don't have this problem due to anti-wheelie electronics. motogp bikes utilize a very sophisticated anti-wheelie system that you don't see on street bikes, but the essential function is the same: when a sensor detects that the front wheel is picking up, the electronics cut power. the difference is that motogp bikes can shut off specific throttle bodies, rolling off the power smoothly.

motogp bikes are absolute weapons, and there's even more going on under the surface that we don't know about. i understand why some fans and riders alike criticize current motogp for its overwhelming use of electronics, but anti-wheelie was one of the first electronic features added, and is essentially standard across all bikes, so there isn't a big gulf in performance between teams. switching swingarms, as a strategy, has very little to do with electronics. i think both of these practices are perfectly fair and deserve to continue, and they're not really at risk of removal anyway, unlike holeshot, traction control, etc.

On Infantilization and Tech

I'll say it because I'm extra spicy today.

I see a lot of folks saying that Tech shouldn't be infantilized, and he should not be kept away from adult relationships.

Got it. 100% agree.

However....

Infantilization isn't just regarding relationships. It also involves how the person is perceived in greater society.

So....when you're writing about Tech, let me ask you:

Is he respected as an adult? His opinion taken seriously?

Are his ideas dismissed as childish or dorky?

Does he have a cool and/or IMPORTANT job? Or is he shoved into Dork Corner dicking around with engine parts?

Is his partner the dominant one who takes charge of everything?

Is it another team member in charge?

Is he contributing in a way that is fulfilling and respectful of his background and knowledge?

Or is he just toddering around until someone rescues him?

I get plot, I understand that character arcs need to happen. But every time I start a fic where Tech's being bossed around or taken care of by someone else, canon or otherwise, I immediately log out.

Why am I saying all of this?

Because I am a neurodivergent person who receives this horseshit on a regular basis.

I'm not a dumbass or lazy. I have a Ph.D and have been working in my field for 16 years. But I have been passed over and mocked and teased and shoved into corners because I'm biologically female, I'm a wife and mother, and I am vaguely on the spectrum.

Poor wittle Dr. Meat Muffin and her weak womanly ways, must help her over puddles and shit.

I'm putting in my yearly review right now. I expect that I will be talked down by my department director, despite performing wildly well.

I will be going to a conference shortly too. My colleagues with the smoother, charming voices will use the grants I wrote as a basis for THEIR grant writing course, of which I am being forced to take.

Learning about writing properly using your own writing as an example is a level of hell I didn't know existed and yet, here I am.

Maybe it's God's punishment for that Spiderman/Tech drawing I did earlier, who the fuck knows.

The point is, when you're writing about neurodivergent people, give them opportunities to use their skills and brains and contribute in fulfilling ways.

There's more than one way to infantilize someone, don't be that person.
