Entrepreneur Nation Cohosted Event On Diversity and Inclusivity!

One of my show guests invited me to moderate an event on workforce diversity and inclusivity. The company (TechInMotion) put on events across the country on recruitment and networking for people in the technology and design related fields. The event was partially inspired by several interviews I have done with their different professionals and recruiters on my show.

The first part of the panel talk was about workforce trends. What was interesting to hear from the panelists is that businesses are more open to working from home once a week, using platforms likes Slack for daily communication and even using Facebook to check in on people!

The next part we discussed the opportunities for college students and first year newbie professionals. It has never been more abundant in opportunities for these groups to grow in the tech, design and business analyst roles.

At the end we discussed how to deal with inclusivity in industries where it’s not typically the norm (i.e. technology). The best way to handle this is to provide an open, kind and creative type atmosphere where the best ideas and executions gains the respect. It was refreshing to hear this from all of the panelists. I personally agree!

Afterwards we had a talk with show listeners and the companies for more mentor-ship advice. The overall response was good and we are planning to do another one.

In sum, I am very proud how TechinMotion was able to use some of the items my weekly radio show (“Entrepreneur Nation”) discusses and turn it into a free, open event for people wanting more hand’s on experiences!

As a newly minted (second-time) founder, I'm immersing myself deeply into the myriad startup events taking place here in NYC as often as I possibly can. 

While I know that some will scoff, saying"real work" doesn't get done while you're sitting in a chair listening to other people, or schmoozing over a lukewarm beer in a crowded room, I believe that every conversation you have at a startup event has the potential to be a life-changer.   You may meet your co-founder, or an incredible UX designer, or even an investor, just by being open and communicating.

Plus, if you're attending high-quality events like the incredible Women in Tech Panel discussion put on tonight at AlleyNYC by Tech In Motion...you're definitely getting your money's worth.  I highly recommend choosing events wisely, and then talking to as many people as you can possibly reach while you're there!  If nothing else, you refine that elevator pitch every time you give it.

Stellar panel lined up for TechInMotion at StartupHouse on Jan. 23rd

Next week, Jan 23rd (Thursday) we'll host TechInMotion SF with a stellar panel of 4 successful entrepreneurs, including: 

Poornima Vijayashanker - A software engineer, entrepreneur, speaker, blogger, and lecturer. After graduating from Duke University with degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer science she moved out to Silicon Valley to begin her career as an R&D Engineer. After a couple years she was lured into startup land. Here first startup was Mint.com, where she was the founding engineer. After Mint's acquisition by Intuit for $170M, at the end of 2009, she transitioned from being a founding engineer to a founder in 2010. 

Scott Bedard - After several startups, Scott joined CNET in 2003 to become the VP of engineering for the Games and Entertainment group which later led him to Yahoo! to do more of the same.  In 2008 along with Vince Broady and Ankarino Lara they formed thisMoment, Inc. where Scott has held the CTO role.  Scott has reviewed thousands of resumes and interviewed hundreds of engineers over the years. 

Jakob Storm - Currently the COO at CrowdCurity. Jakob has a diverse background in Masterdata managment, Supply chain management and Business. In 2013 Jakob took the leap and started CrowdCurity together with three other Danish guys. CrowdCurity is a company doing crowdsourced security testing. The four partners started bootstrapping in Buenos Aires, building the platform and starting the business. After three months in Argentina, having built a solid MVP and on boarded the first paying customers, the team joined San Mateo based accelerator Boost.vc.

Kieran Farr - The CEO and Founder of Vidcaster, the market-leading video training and marketing platform with global clients such as VMware, MIT and Dell. Since its launch in 2011, the Vidcaster platform has driven measurable training, sales, marketing and compliance objectives for hundreds of clients. Kieran is active in the startup community serving as a mentor to media startups through 500 Startups and Matter VC.
