OLDD WVRMS REVEAL ALL
~By Billy Goate~
Tumblr media
OLDD WVRMS. It feels like they've been eating away at my flesh and swimming in my bloodstream for a very long time, so much so that I forget to talk about how they've infected me. I was halfway through a review of their last effort when life swept me away to other places, then it was already time for a new release from the Belgian band. No, scratch that -- two new releases!
This month, the doomed instrumentalists revealed a split with Liège devotional math-prog threesome Ilydaen, just months after the release of the February five-tracker 'Codex Tenebris' (2019 - Cursed Monk Records). That's now two long-plays, two extended-plays, a compilation album, and the aforementioned split to the band's name.
The Wave & The Swell ( Split LP ) by Ilydaen & Oldd Wvrms
OLDD WVRMS is a band that seems continually tinkering and experimenting. I mean, you really have to if you're going to cross the coveted five-year mark as a band, a milestone that seems to be key long-term viability. "There is the beautiful, spacious atmosphere of Agalloch," I wrote of their last record 'Ignobilis' (2016). "All this is good news if you long for the cold, crisp air of winter, forests filled with unspeakable darkness, whispering tales of bravery, misunderstanding, and tragedy. The emotion is especially palpable and will haunt my memory for quite some time."
Ignobilis by OLDD WVRMS
I also noted at the time that Ignobilis represented "a massive turn to clean singing over previous releases." In contrast, Codex Tenebris is a reconnects with works like 'Mater Serpentium' (2015) and NØT (2015), which are also sans voix. Stylistically, you’ll find OLDD WVRMS painting from a similar tonal palate as Enslaved, even dabbling in the technical terrain of Psycroptic, though in much slower compositions.
Codex Tenebris by OLDD WVRMS
OLDD WVRMS occupies the space between shadows, where slow, patient, penetrating riffs dwell and dark words are uttered. "La vallée des tombes" is one of the gems of the record, striking a strange balance between meditative bleakness and pounding discord. I’ve long been a fan of dissonant harmonies since I realized it was “okay” to play them as a pianist delving into the oeuvre of Franz Liszt and Alexander Scriabin. Like those composers, OLDD WVRMS utilizes dissonance no merely to jar the listener, but as a critical tactic for establishing bleak moods and a sense of the sinister. Codex Tenebris is available on Cursed Monk Records right here.
On the eve of their music video, "A l'or, aux ombres et aux abîmes," Doomed & Stoned visited with ØW guitarist and OLDD WVRMS founder Ben in hopes of getting to know this fairly low-key and mysterious doom metal trio -- rounded out by Oli and Cho on bass and drums -- just a hair or two better.
What is the meaning of the band’s name OLDD WVRMS? Is their significance to the unique spelling of your name?
It’s old Germanic to "Old Worms." There’s no particular meaning, although I’m a fan of the Dark Souls saga and it could be a reference to the primordial snakes.
I'm curious how your individual paths through life brought you three together?
We’re all from the French side of Belgium, down south. Cho and Oli have known each other for almost two decades. I was searching for bandmates to put up this new project and they were the perfect match. We all played in many bands before ØW, nothing worth naming.
There’re no guidelines. The music serves your imagination.
Why does instrumental doom appeal to you guys so much?
We tried several singers, with expectations they couldn’t achieve. It wasn’t bad, but we felt locked in restricted areas -- musically speaking, I mean. I took the mic on our previous release Ignobilis, singing just a bit, and even at that point we had the feeling that it wasn’t necessary at all, so we started writing the new album with a fully instrumental approach.
Tumblr media
Rare is the band that can make instrumental metal stand convincingly on its own “two feet,” but OLDD WVRMS has done it. What would you say is the secret to pulling this style off successfully?
Thank you. Honestly, it’s hard to say. I guess it’s because we don’t hesitate too long on what’s good or not during the creation process. This and the fact that we blend a lot of influences from various horizons, seems to create something spontaneous. I think that’s what people like about ØW.
What instruments, amps, and gear do you find most useful in bringing your vision to life?
Cho’s setup is pretty straightforward: his beautiful DW kit with aggressive and shining cymbals -- and a ferocious need to beat the shit out of it!
Oli is using an Ampeg SVT 3 pro, SWR Goliath and Megoliath cabs with a Fender Aerodyne, plugged into a pedalboard loaded with many effects, drives, octaver, delays, reverbs, etcetera, to achieve the drones parts.
I use a Marshall JCM 800 over modified by Ruthenberg, Marshall and Orange cabs, custom guitars by Denzo Custom Guitars, and a pedalboard loaded with overdrives, delays, and reverbs.
We record in my own studio, The Pale Flame, using the exact same rig live and studio.
Tumblr media
I don’t read French, but I’m guessing the song titles are quite important in this selection of five tracks. Can you translate them to English and tell us what you intended to express with each song? Are they meant to stand independently or are they united by a concept?
Basically, all the songs originally had lyrics -- and yes, they’re all linked, almost as a soundtrack. The atmosphere we wanted to translate through the songs titles were way more powerful in French, with a little something more poetic and dramatic.
The only concept about Codex Tenebris is the presence and absence of light and obscurity. The idea that the audience is not guided by lyrics and can travel between the songs with their own imagination and create their own stories while listening to our music is extremely satisfying. There’re no guidelines. The music serves your imagination.
So, the first track "Ténèbres" means "Darkness." It starts the record in a cold, dark place, and song expresses loneliness and fear.
Second track, "A l’or, aux ombres et aux abîmes," means "To gold, to shades, and to the abysses." It’s my personal favorite, all about deception, anger, and melancholy.
The third one is "misère & Corde," literally "Misery & Rope" -- a song about grief and loss.
Next one, "La vallée des tombes" or "The valley of tombs," is a psychoactive and hypnotic song about terror and despair.
"Fléau est son âme" is hard to translate, but it would be something like "scourged is his soul." It is about letting things go, acceptance, and abnegation.
Tumblr media
We briefly corresponded about your EP a few years ago, when I emailed you about a sample you’d selected for the final track. I heard another sample in the final track of the latest LP that intrigued me.
It’s an Egyptian monologue taken from the movie Angel of Mossad, and it’s in correlation with "Fléau est son âme." It’s the story of The Boy Who Cried Wolf. The narration is beautiful.
What's the area of Belgium like where you OLDD WVRMS calls home?
We all live in villages -- small villages. Everything is very quiet and calm. Nothing ever happens. (laughs) Sorry, there’s just nothing much to say about it.
No worries! I've lived in my share of small towns, too, so I get it. What are some of the bands that you play with in your heavy music scene?
We shared the stage with badass bands like Hangman’s Chair, Primitive Man, -16-, Jucifer, the body, Grime, Ortega, and more -- hopefully many more to come.
When you look into your crystal ball, do you envision yourself touring?
Yeah, we’d love to. Like everyone else, we have jobs and families, but touring once or twice a year during a few choice weeks would be awesome. Only time will tell if this will happens.
Finally, what would your ideal live performance look like, if you could spare no expense?
Small venues, crowed, with our light man Chouffe and a good sound engineer. You know, keep things simple.

Dear dreamers,
I am again, lying on the bed while writing this. And yes I had a really nice bath, just like yesterday. BUT today there was something different! I used a little bath bomb, and omg that smells so good. I especially really enjoyed this bath because I am so so so tired from hiking… I already feel my muscles starting to hurt. So well, lemme tell you about my day.
Me and my mom got up around 9 am, and started to get ready for the day. After that we got breakfast in the restaurant of the hotel and omg it was amazing. I had a croissant with jam, a chocolate croissant and some bread with butter and salmon. With that I had some really nice tea. Here is a picture of my plate:
After breakfast, we saw a little stray cat looking for food, so me and my mom got him/her a little bit of salmon. I wanted to pet him/her, but the cat just wouldn’t let me 😦
We then went to the tourist information centre in the town, and got a little information book about the towns surrounding Houffalize. We decided, that we would go to Bastogne, just like we planned to. So we got our stuff, got in the car and drove to Bastogne. And honestly, I don’t know what to think of it.. There is only one main shopping street, which is on the sides of a very busy road, which is really annoying. There weren’t a lot of nice stores, although we found one little store that was really cool. It looked like just a little store, but there were three floors!! The store is called Maison Pékus and it’s perfect if you want to buy some wedding presents, or just presents or just decoration for your house. You can also buy chocolate there!;D Here are some pictures from the things in the store. (So sorry about the bad quality pictures omg)
This is a mug that I bought there
#gallery-0-5 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-5 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
So after the shopping, we decided we really wanted to take a walk in a forest, like go do a hiking trail or something. Well jesus christ it was so f*cking difficult to find a hiking trail, or even the way to one. When we finally found an interesting one, but didn’t know the exact way to get there, we thought it would be nice to go lunch somewhere near it. We wanted to hike in Amberloup, so I googled for places to eat near Amberloup. We ended up finding some restaurant in Tenneville. So we went there, and found out that they only served big dishes like steak and all that. AT F*CKING 14:00 YOU WANT TO SERVE DINNER?! So we went somewhere else, because we kind of just wanted some fries and snacks. The guy from the restaurant told us there was a place nearby – 300m – further, that would serve fries and snacks. So we went there. It was closed. It was open from 11:30 till 14:00 and would open again around 17:00. I do not get it. I seriously don’t. Why on earth would you close during lunchtime? That’s just weird. Eventually we did find a place that was open, so we ate there. While we were eating, we were online looking for the stupid hiking trail. We found an address, but when we typed it in in Google Maps, it said that it wasn’t a valid address. So we decided to go to another tourism information point, this time in Sainte-Ode, which was like a 10min drive from where we were at that moment. So we drove there, and a very kind lady, -who smelled funny – helped us by finding us a map. She also told me to download this app called Sity Tour -No,I did not spell it wrong-. That’s an app with a lot of biking&hiking trails on there. You can turn on your GPS to find the nearest trails, but you can also find trails searching by the area name. So eventually, we founded the trail we wanted to do. So the woman told us to drive to the Airport of Saint Hubert, park the car there and walk to the beginning of the trail. But when we arrived at the airport, we found out that we had to cross a really dangerous road to get to the trail. So we parked the car at the beginning of the trail and started walking. Before I tell you how that went, here is a picture of the trail.
So the trail is 9,8km long, has a high distance of 152m up and down, the difficulty was medium and it would take about 2 and a half hours to walk the whole thing. We started good, but the navigation wasn’t working yet, so we walked the wrong way very quickly. After a 1km or something we found out that we were not walking the right way because the navigation started working and showed us. So after walking about a 1km through the middle of the forest we got back on the route again. When we arrived at the point where the “circle” would start, we found out that it was already 17:00 and that the sun would start to disappear around 18:30. So we started walking faster and faster, to make sure we would be back at the car before dark. On our way we saw a wild boar, and omg I almost got a heart attack. I mean we were standing very still, and were looking at him and he was looking at us and I was like omfg and I he looked like he was thinking omfg too. After a second or 2 he took a sip from a puddle before him, and walked off into the woods again. I swear I was so scared when I first saw him because he kind of looked like a wolf. After that nothing really happened. We got back to the car just in time, and now our muscles hurt a lot and we are very tired. When we got back in the hotelroom, I took a bath and my mom got us some food. And now she’s watching a serie on Netflix while I’m writing this. After this I’m just going to bed, because tomorrow we have to get up early to get out of the hotel in time.
Tomorrow we are going back home, but we are taking a stop at Maastricht to do some shopping there. I don’t think I’ll post anything then, but if I buy lots of nice things I’ll do a shopblog;D If not then you’ll definitely get a new post on Tuesday!
  Yours faithfully,
Anne
Keep dreaming and never give up!<3
Day two of the little get away! Dear dreamers, I am again, lying on the bed while writing this. And yes I had a really nice bath, just like yesterday.

Back in the day, just along the road…
Lesley shared a picture with us he recently scored at a local swap meet. It’s about the road National 4 better known as the old road between Brussels and Luxemburg, before there was a freeway. It’s in the community Tenneville more exactly in the small town of Wembay. The building still exist today, was restaurant on the picture, became a bank later on and a bookstore after that, now… its empty,…

Wargame Wednesday: Battle of the Bulge OOBs for V Panzer Northern Sector
Orders of Battle
Small portion from the Campaign Series OOB file.
Any designer of historical simulations has to confront the question: what was the actual composition of forces at that place and time?  The harder one works for historical accuracy, the more elusive the answer. At times, the task is almost futile but the question must be asked.
The ancient up to the medieval periods are notorious for the lack of sources and exaggerated numbers.  Even with the advent of better record keeping historical accuracy remains difficult. Keep in mind every organization in this post was required to send daily status reports.  Despite the ubiquity of reports (and sometimes because of it), accessibility of primary sources can be problematic. Also, game designers, who often rely on secondary resources, will adjust the OOBs for reasons of playability or constraints of the game engine. I encountered a prime example of this issue when trying to determine the 14th Armored Group’s historical OOB:
Hugh Cole mentions “light tanks”.
In the 14th Cavalry in the Gap article, Col. Judge mentions 17 M-3 tanks.
The scenario OOB’s light tanks are M-24 Chafees.
A Panzer Leader OOB highlighted on the next page has a mix of M-1 and M-5 tanks.
At least most sources agree on the M-8 scout cars…
Additionally, I discovered a typo in the scenario’s OOB.  The 193rd VG Regiment was actually the 183rd.  A misnamed regiment won’t affect game play but unless caught and corrected in time, it may become a vector for inaccurate information for future games and posts.
This post will discuss the units available at the start of this scenario and compare the scenario’s OOB with one that comes to us via the Nafziger OOB collection then finish with some Panzer Leader OOB charts.
At the end of this post, the index and reference sections are beginning to flesh out and I have added a related games section. Let me know your favorite Bulge related games and I’ll add to the list.
Over on my blog there’s a post on Nafziger’s OOB for the units in this scenario and a screen shot of S&T’s variant of an Avalon HIll OOB.
German Forces at Scenario Start
LXVI Armeekorps (General der Artillerie W. Lutch)
Units available at the Corps level to be assigned between the two divisions.
x4 Werfer (rocket) Regiments.  36 150mm and 36 210mm rocket launchers.
460. Heavy Artillery Battalion. 18 Krupp18 170mm guns.
1/506 Heavy Panzer Battalion** 21 PzVIB aka Tiger II or King Tiger
  18th Volks-Grenadier Division (Oberst Hoffman-Schonborn)
    293rd Volks-Grenadier Regiment
294th Volks-Grenadier Regiment
295th Volks-Grenadier Regiment
18th Artillery Regiment
Each Volks-Grenadier regiment shares elements of the following formations:
Engineer Battalion.  They are able to construct foot bridges but cannot construct vehicle bridges.
Anti-tank battalion.
Assault gun brigade.
  62nd Volks-Grenadier Division (Oberst F. Kittel)
    164th Volks-Grenadier Regiment
183rd Volks-Grenadier Regiment
190th Volks-Grenadier Regiment
62nd Artillery Regiment
Each Volks-Grenadier regiment shares elements of the following formations:
Engineer Battalion.  They are able to construct foot bridges but cannot construct vehicle bridges.
Anti-tank battalion.
Assault gun brigade.
    Führerbegleit Brigade
The Führerbegleit Brigade entered the battle on the 2nd day and the scenario OOB will be covered in more detail later. A Panzer Leader OOB is below.
**Historically, the 506 Heavy Panzer battalion was assigned to the VI Panzer Armee (sector to the north) but this battalion saw action at Andler, just northeast of Schoenburg.  They had to detour south, into V Panzer Armee’s sector but for the scenario, Feldmarschal Model (i.e. the scenario designer) has ordered this battalion remain in this sector.
  American Forces at Start
106th Infantry Division (Major General A.W. Jones)
The 106th ID was assigned to the VIII Corps (Major General T.H. Middleton) but in order to facilitate a game split into three equal sectors the scenario designer assigned the 106th to XIII Corps.  The reason is that the VIII Corps HQ is located on the far left side of the center map in Tenneville (almost 70km drive via Bastogne).  The 106th was on the extreme left flank of VIII Corps and looking at the game map serves to give an idea on how spread out the front line units were.  Communications, especially simulating commands to lower echelon units is not part of the CS game engine though supply is.  Supply is automatically determined by the computer at the beginning of the turn so it was easier for the scenario designer to assign the 106th to the XIII Corps which will eventually be released on the west side of the northern map.
422nd Infantry Regiment
423rd Infantry Regiment
424th Infantry Regiment
592nd Field Artillery Battalion. Starts with the 422nd Infantry Regiment. x12 155mm.
Each Infantry Regiment has the following formation equally shared between them:
4/563 AW Battalion. Each regiment gets 12 half tracks with M1 40mm anti-aircraft guns.
4/634 AW Battalion. A mix of 2 1/2 ton GMC truck towed Quad.50 cal MGs, and 40mm AA guns.
Engineer Battalion.  3 platoons each.  Don’t know their bridge building abilities but we’ll see their bridge demolition skills soon enough.
820th Tank Destroyer Battalion. 15 M18 GMS Tank Destroyers assigned to each regiment.
  14th Cavalry Group (Col Devine)
  18th Cavalry. 3 troops of 15 M8 Light Armored Cars and 1 troop of 15 M24 Chaffees.
32nd Cavalry. As above, 45 armored cars and 15 Chaffees.
Both the 18th and 32nd has a HQ Company with an engineer platoon, an AT platoon (5 37mm AT guns) and assault gun platoon (5 half tracks mounted with 37mm AA guns).
  Notes
My 293rd VG Regiment has two companies with bicycle troops (no anti-tank capability such as panzerfaust and no sub-machine guns so lower assault values) in lieu of the Volks-grenadier platoons which have both attributes in abundance.  This was done to recreate the use of troops in reconnaissance.
Most of the 62nd VG Division has lower morale than the 18th.  The 62nd VG Division was destroyed in Russia and the rebuilt formation had a sizable contingent of Polish and Czech conscripts who spoke no German.
According to Nafziger the 18th VG Division was formed in September, 1944 in Denmark from the cadre of a Luftwaffe field division and drafts from the Luftwaffe and the Kriegsmarine (navy).
Based on the Nafziger OOB some units that didn’t make the cut were the “Brüko” bridging units (I could use them) and the 813th Panzer Pioneer Company, equipped with the remote control “Goliath” self propelled mines (not in the game’s master OOB file).
Some of the missing railroad artillery batteries are represented by a naval gun battery in the northeast corner of the map.
Nafziger quotes H. Jung who estimated that a VG division would probably be at 58% of their total authorized strength (6410 men).  More on the Nafziger OOB on my blog.
  OOBs from Panzer Leader
During research I discovered Greg’s Panzerblitz site and found a few relevant scenario cards with OOBs on his 1944 Bulge page.  Greg links to the Imaginative Strategist page where there is a wealth of Panzerblitz and Panzer Leader material.  Clicking on any of the images below will lead you to Greg’s site.
14th Cavalry Group
  106th ID
I adjusted Greg’s card and removed two of the infantry regiments.  Both the 423rd and 424th have the same counters as the 422nd below.
Volks-Grenadier Divisions
The 18th will also serve for the 62nd VG Division as both OOBs seem identical. As with the I06th ID, I have removed two of the regiments.
Führerbegleit Brigade
Comparison Between Scenario and Panzer Leader OOB
There are significant differences which serve to illustrate a game designer’s (and game consumer’s) dilemma when trying to recreate a historical action.  Not only do primary and secondary resources differ but the way they are interpreted by gamers, bloggers, readers, etc., is different.  Finally, game designers will make judgement calls based on the restrictions of the game engine and the attempt to produce an enjoyable gaming experience.
No judgement call between the two but using the Volks-Grenadiers as the main example some of the biggest differences are:
No HQ below the regiment in the scenario OOBs for playability purposes.
More rifle platoons and a 81mm mortar section in the PL for VG regiments.
No Fusilier battalion in the scenario but the battalion’s organization (two rifle platoons and 4 SMG platoons) is closer what constitutes a company in the scenario (1 rifle, 1 machine gun section and 2 VG platoons).
No flak battalion for the VG Regiments.  I could use them the past two turns I played.
As discussed in the intro: for the 14th Armored Group the scenario OOB has M24 Chafees, the Panzer Leader OOB has a mix of M-5s and M-1s, and from Col. Judge’s article there were 17 M-3 tanks…..
  Next Week
I’ll start to compare some of weapons available to both sides and try to find an answer on the 14th Armored Group tanks. Krewinkle and other battles will have to wait.
