The US Department of Transportation has ordered states to kill their implementation plans related to the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, according to a memo obtained by WIRED that was later made public. The decision appears to halt in its tracks a $5 billion program designed to fund state projects to install electric vehicle charging stations across the United States.
Officials at the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), which manages the program, ordered state transportation directors to “decertify” the plans that all 50 states have used to outline where and how they will build their charging stations, and with what companies they’ll contract to do so. States have followed those plans to build more than 30 charging stations across the US, with hundreds more on the way.
Surveys show prospective car buyers cite the country’s lagging electric vehicle charging infrastructure as a major reason they won’t buy electric. The NEVI program, established by 2021’s Infrastructure Law, was the government’s answer to those concerns. It attempts to build chargers along thousands of miles of federal highway, with a focus on places that might not otherwise be able to financially support a charger.
The memo says transportation officials in President Donald Trump’s administration will write all new guidance for the program, which will then go through a public comment period. The timeline suggests work on the federally-funded electric vehicle charger network may be paused for months.
The order may be illegal. It could fly in face of court orders demanding the Trump administration “unfreeze” a funding pause that prevents federal money from flowing to state agencies. It may also violate the Administrative Procedures Act, which requires agencies to follow legal procedures before taking action.
“There is no legal basis for funds that have been apportioned to states to build projects being ‘decertified’ based on policy,” says Andrew Rogers, a former deputy administrator and chief counsel of the Federal Highway Administration.
The US DOT did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
It’s unclear how the DOT’s order will affect charging stations that are under construction. In the letter, FHWA officials write that “no new obligations may occur,” suggesting states may not sign new contracts with businesses even if those states have been allocated federal funding. The letter also says “reimbursement of existing obligations will be allowed” as the program goes through a review process, suggesting states may be allowed to pay back businesses that have already provided services.
Billions in federal funding have already been disbursed under the program. Money has gone to both red and blue states. Top funding recipients last year included Florida, New York, Texas, Georgia, and Ohio.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has spent the last few weeks at the head of the federal so-called Department of Government Efficiency directing “audits” and cuts to federal spending. But his electric automobile company has been a recipient of $31 million in awards from the NEVI program, according to a database maintained by transportation officials, accounting for 6 percent of the money awarded so far.
The Trump administration has said that it plans to target electric vehicles and EV-related programs. An executive order signed by Trump on his first day in office purported to eliminate “the EV mandate,” though such a federal policy never existed.
NEVI projects have taken longer to get off the ground than other charging station construction because the federal government was deliberate in allocating funding to companies with track records, that could prove they could build or operate charging stations, says Ryan McKinnon, a spokesperson for Charge Ahead Partnership, a group of businesses and organizations that work in electric vehicle charging. If NEVI funding isn’t disbursed, “the businesses that have spent time or money investing in this program will be hurt,” he says.

Book Review 44 – The Spare Man by Mary Robinette Kowal

Alright, first full novel I’ve read entirely due to it getting a Hugo nomination. In retrospect that fact that there was absolutely no wait list for it at the library was perhaps a sign I should have paid attention to. I’m not sure it’s a bad book, exactly, but my god is it just chock full of little things that grated on me (which more or less tracks with my very vague memories of casually perusing The Calculating Stars when it first came out, so probably just a sign Kowal’s not for me, really.)
The story’s set in a fairly grounded space age future, on an ultra-lux cruise liner taking its passengers from Earth to Mars in speed and style. Tesla Crane, heiress, celebrity, and generally incredibly famous and unfathomably wealthy, has booked one of the nicest suites in the earth-gravity section of the ship under a false name to enjoy some anonymity on her much anticipated honeymoon cruise. Things of course take a drastic turn as a woman is murdered outside their sweet, and her spouse is framed for the crime. The shipboard security is obstructive and suspicious, bodies keep piling up, and it’s largely up to Tesla to solve the murder and clear his good name.
So first off – this is largely a style thing that grates on me far more than it should, and it probably effects my overall reading experience to an entirely unjustified degree, but – the standard etiquette in the story’s future is for everyone to use the gender neutral Mx. Using gendered terms like wife, husband, sir, m’am, or similar is also called out as being somewhere between archaic and offensively retrograde. Also, it is totally standard courtesy to list someone’s pronouns in any case where you’d their full name. In which case what is the point of taking so much care to be gender neutral of everything else. (In a sense this actually inspired worldbuilding, insofar as it’s exactly the sort of stupid language games high aristocracy or its equivalent tends to love, but the reading experience kind of grated).
The society’s generally very consciously progressive in a way that kind of calls attention to itself. It really wasn’t a surprise to see in the acknowledgement’s section that all the mentions of courtesy masks being a thing were edited in as covid happened. This is all mostly just background noise though, as far as narrative focus the only things that really occupy the story’s attention are its portrayal of disability and its bizarre class politics.
So, a key point of her backstory is that some years before the story, a lab disaster (during a demonstration of a personal assistance mech, which is actually some incredibly bitter dramatic irony I’m surprised the story doesn’t call any attention to?) killed six people and left Tesla with permanent spinal damage, chronic pain, and PTSD. Medical science doesn’t seem to have made many innovations on a cane or breathing exercises as far as mobility aids and PTSD treatment goes, but it does provide the absolutely incredible wish fulfillment device of a switch in your brain that lets you turn your pain sensitivity up or down at will. Tesla’s disability is a recurring thing throughout the book and generally the portrayal seemed fine to me? A couple conversations that bled into ‘giving the reader an important message’ territory, but only slightly and hardly the worst in the book.
The book’s attitude to class and wealth though, woof. Like, okay, the story is clearly a bit of a pastiche, a sanguine attitude to vast inequality and social hierarchy are necessary for the whole fantasy to work, but my god in that case please stop calling attention to it. The book so badly wants to simultaneously be progressive and have Tesla’s life be as maximally glamorous and exalted as possible that it gets twisted into this incredibly awkward spirals showing that she’s a good hyper-elite oligarch which really only call attention to the issue without doing anything to resolve it. Her internal monologue including some variation of the line ‘normally I hate just using money as a bludgeon to get what I want, but” happens a few too many times for it to not make un less likeable than an aristocrat who owns it.
Like, this is potentially uncharitable, but the book seems to take it as read that I find the idea of demanding to speak to a manager and having them grovel and apologize for how I’ve been disrespect far more alluring than I do? Not being that customer is a subject Tesla ruminates on at some length, and at the same time calling up her high priced lawyer and threatening to bury the whole cruise line in lawsuits while they rush to provide apology gifts is definitely portrayed as this thrilling power fantasy. It all left me actively rooting against her, at least a bit.
The actual mystery itself honestly wasn’t much to write home about – a bit confused, red herring introduced blatantly and too late, the obviously suspicious and personally unlikable character was the villain – but in a similar vein it did seem…telling, that the guy who’d been positioned as the unlikable asshole oligarch in opposition to Crane was secretly a murderous gold-digging imposter all along! Also, the fact that this was proven by a photo showing the oligarch to have been a dog guy, and the imposter being quite literally the only character in the entire book who didn’t adore Tesla’s emotional support dog. Like, c’mon.
Speaking of the dog – the book had a few recurring beats which I’m sure I’m supposed to have found funny or endearing but just overstayed their welcome with me several times over. The entire cast’s brains leaking out whenever they saw Tesla’s westie like it was some sort of platonic ideal of canine cuteness was one of them, along with like, Tesla and her spouse making out at a moment’s notice because a plot point meant that their encrypted tele-chat required skin-to-skin contact, and the book doubling as a cocktail guide. All things that if I’d liked the book I could have easily overlooked, but as is were just extra straws on the proverbial camel’s back.
Anyway, yeah, didn’t work for me.

Okay sources(warning! this will be long):
The Cybertruck is equipped with security cameras that activate whenever someone comes too close to the car, which then drains the battery.
This is called "Sentry Mode" and unfortunately it won't drain the truck's battery all the way, it turns itself off when the car is below 20% power. Overall it's not that big of a downside, but it does take up enough power that it annoys the people who own them and costs them some money. This review is where I got that info, around the 2 minute mark.

The cybertruck's battery will catch fire if it gets wet.
This is true of all Teslas(and possibly an issue with EVs in general?), one notably caught fire during Hurricane Helene and burned a family's house down. The footage was captured by a security camera and it prompted officials to warn owners of EVs to park their cars on high ground or far from their homes if there is a flood risk.
And this Cybertruck caught fire after hitting a fire hydrant.
They also do rust, and stain, but idk how fast that happens. Some Cybertrucks apparently come rusty already, in the first video linked up there the guy shows that the bolts around his tire rims are rusted, so I absolutely believe getting them wet will at least make them look worse.
However, Cybertrucks also apparently have a "car wash mode" as well as a "wade mode" which need to be used when getting the car wetter than you would washing it yourself or in the rain. Wade mode, which is for crossing flooded roads other cars could not, seems to do almost nothing to actually protect the car from water, this video shows that driving into water not only traps water inside the truck, but will make pieces fall off, and break some of the external buttons. As for car wash mode, the user manual says if you neglect to use it in a car wash it will damage the truck and void your warranty.
The acceleration pedal comes apart and gets stuck in the down position.
This was the subject of the first Cybertruck recall. The plastic pedal pad was allegedly too difficult to slide on, so the assembly workers used soap as lubricant, which means the pedal pad can just slide right off and get stuck under part of the floor and lock the car acceleration.
If you google "Cybertruck pedal recall" like 50 articles come up, this was a big deal.
You cannot exit the vehicle if it has lost power, and the entire thing is wired in one long interconnected line, like an old string of Christmas lights, so if one thing goes everything else does too.
As far as I'm aware this is more of a Tesla problem than a Cybertruck problem(and also has been an issue with other EVs). The model Y, according to the user manual, says there are two ways to open the door from inside. The front door has a latch by the window controls, and there is a backdoor one...only on some of them, not all come with it, and ngl looking at this diagram it is a little confusing and I can see someone struggling to figure it out in an emergency.
The user manual does say that these latches are ONLY to be used when the car has lost power, which does confirm that the doors will not open normally if the battery dies or is messed up in some way.
I can't check every single Tesla user manual to see if they all include this manual latch, but I have seen COUNTLESS videos across the internet of people showing that they can't get the doors open from the outside if the car has lost power or even if there's just frost on the doors, and just searching "stuck in tesla" on google pulls up LOADS of news stories and reddit pages of people getting stuck in them.

I can't find a source on someone getting stuck in a Cybertruck, just people getting stuck in Teslas and other EVs due to not knowing about the manual releases which are often inconspicuous or hidden, but if it's a problem with basically all EVs then it's likely an issue with the Cybertruck as well, and the Cybertruck itself it is designed extremely poorly to the point it's genuinely hard to even smash in the windows, which is crucial in the design of cars because it prevents people from dying in fires or drowning if the car ends up underwater.
I'm probably going to reference the below video a lot, but this guy has a group of grown men try as hard as the possibly can to smash in the windows or get through they door and they can't. So uh. Yikes.

As for the whole "wired in one long line" thing, I'm not going to pretend I'm an electrician, but the way it's been explained to me is that it's kinda like an old christmas light string, where if one light goes out every light after it does to. Cars aren't usually wired like this, because having one component break should only effect that component, you NEED the rest of the stuff to be on it's own connection so it can keep working. Cybertrucks don't do that, so yeah, if the speakers go it can take half the car with it. That seems to be what this article is saying:
And this reddit thread explains it a bit more plainly, and the image included, which somehow makes this sound like a good thing, does cover how it's the same long wire.
There have been several deaths already thanks to people not being able to get out of these deathtraps when they've burst into flames or reverse accelerated into bodies of water.
This claim is like...yes but also it's complicated?
The drowning victim was Angela Chao, who mistakenly reversed into a pond on her property after hanging out with friends. She was NOT in a Cybertruck, this was a regular Tesla. She was drunk, but she'd allegedly had issues with this Tesla gearshift before, so those two together landed her in the pond. She apparently made multiple calls to her friends, who told her to get out of the car, but she said she couldn't, which makes sense as the power likely was compromised and not every owner knows about the safety latch, and it's not easy to find, and I assume she wasn't in a position to be able to smash the window(which may have not worked anyway, I know the Cybertruck's windows don't shatter like they should, I don't know if the windows on regular Teslas are made differently). Her friends weren't able to get her out, and it took a while for rescue workers to get there. The windows didn't break easily, and while they did get the backdoor open they couldn't get her out of it. Eventually they got the front door broken open, but by then it was too late.
The person who died in the fire WAS in a Cybertruck, and apparently lost control on the highway for unknown reasons, smashed into a divider, and it's very likely they were killed or knocked out by the impact and thus didn't have a chance to even try to get out of it when it burst into flames.
I can't find any other stories of people dying in Cybertrucks, so yeah. They are unsafe, but idk how many people have actually been killed by them.
If you slam the doors hard enough it completely destroys the window and the internal door paneling.
Yep! Once again pulling up this video, they slam the Cybertruck doors as hard as they can and it breaks the window and fucks up the inner paneling. TO BE COMPLETELY FAIR, if you slam ANY car door hard enough you can break the window, but afaik that doesn't lead to the entire inside of the door coming off like a goddamn banana peel. They also play a clip of the same thing happening to a Tesla they did a test on. So yeah this is just 100% Tesla not having any idea how to build a car that doesn't suck. I still think the single funniest thing about the cybertruck is that it has all those security cameras built in that are set to activate if anyone gets too close to the vehicle...and those cameras need electricity to run, and the cybertruck is a piece of shit that has way less battery life than you'd think, so you can legit just fuck over the owner by just standing near it and doing nothing else.
Like goddamn Elongated Muskrat found a way to let us siphon gas out of a car without even touching it. Fucking incredible.

Automakers and tech developers testing and deploying self-driving and advanced driver-assistance features will no longer have to report as much detailed, public crash information to the federal government, according to a new framework released today by the US Department of Transportation.
The moves are a boon for makers of self-driving cars and the wider vehicle technology industry, which has complained that federal crash-reporting requirements are overly burdensome and redundant. But the new rules will limit the information available to those who watchdog and study autonomous vehicles and driver-assistance features—tech developments that are deeply entwined with public safety but which companies often shield from public view because they involve proprietary systems that companies spend billions to develop.
The government's new orders limit “one of the only sources of publicly available data that we have on incidents involving Level 2 systems,” says Sam Abuelsamid, who writes about the self-driving-vehicle industry and is the vice president of marketing at Telemetry, a Michigan research firm, referring to driver-assistance features such as Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised), General Motors’ Super Cruise, and Ford’s Blue Cruise. These incidents, he notes, are only becoming “more common.”
The new rules allow companies to shield from public view some crash details, including the automation version involved in incidents and the “narratives” around the crashes, on the grounds that such information contains “confidential business information.” Self-driving-vehicle developers, such as Waymo and Zoox, will no longer need to report crashes that include property damage less than $1,000, if the incident doesn’t involve the self-driving car crashing on its own or striking another vehicle or object. (This may nix, for example, federal public reporting on some minor fender-benders in which a Waymo is struck by another car. But companies will still have to report incidents in California, which has more stringent regulations around self-driving.)
And in a change, the makers of advanced driver-assistance features, such as Full Self-Driving, must report crashes only if they result in fatalities, hospitalizations, air bag deployments, or a strike on a "vulnerable road user,” like a pedestrian or cyclist—but no longer have to report the crash if the vehicle involved just needs to be towed.
“This does seem to close the door on a huge number of additional reports,” says William Wallace, who directs safety advocacy for Consumer Reports. “It’s a big carve-out.” The changes move in the opposite direction of what his organization has championed: federal rules that fight against a trend of "significant incident underreporting" among the makers of advanced vehicle tech.
The new DOT framework will also allow automakers to test self-driving technology with more vehicles that don’t meet all federal safety standards under a new exemption process. That process, which is currently used for foreign vehicles imported into the US but is now being expanded to domestically made ones, will include an "iterative review” that "considers the overall safety of the vehicle.” The process can be used to, for example, more quickly approve vehicles that don’t come with steering wheels, brake pedals, rearview mirrors, or other typical safety features that make less sense when cars are driven by computers.
One company in particular emerges as a winner: Elon Musk’s Tesla, which now will be able to curtail public reporting on its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) features, and may enjoy an easier road to federal safety approval for its upcoming Cybercab, a two-seat, purpose-built robotaxi that does not have a steering wheel or brakes.
“The company that probably benefits the most from that is Tesla,” Abuelsamid says. Though the Transportation Department cited safety as the number one motivator behind the new rules, “there’s nothing in these changes that actually prioritizes safety,” he says.
A spokesperson for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did not respond to questions about Tesla. Tesla, which disbanded its press team five years ago, did not respond to a request for comment.
In a video message posted to X, DOT secretary Sean Duffy said the new automated vehicle framework aimed to increase commercial deployment of new car technology. “America is in the middle of an innovation race with China, and the stakes couldn’t be higher,” he said.
In a memo, an NHTSA official said the changes were only the first step in an effort to "improve the efficiency and effectiveness” of the process through which new vehicle tech is allowed on roads.
Vehicle industry groups applauded the changes.
