Manchester City had to settle for a draw in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Atletico Madrid as a late goal cancelled out Janine Beckie’s early opener.

Canada’s Beckie had pounced on Keira Walsh’s through ball to put City ahead, six minutes after Atletico’s Elena Linari hit the crossbar.

City seemed to be in control until Charlyn Corral’s 80th-minute equaliser rocked the boat.

The second leg will be played in Madrid on Wednesday, 30 October after City travel to rivals Manchester United and Arsenal respectively.

Atletico should have taken the lead after six minutes when England forward Toni Duggan, returning to her former club, could only blast over the bar from five yards out.

Beckie showed composure moments later, after Duggan failed to take her chance in front of the home fans, who had chanted her name before kick-off.

Atletico then dominated most of the possession before the break but City were a threat on the counter-attack, with Lauren Hemp getting into good positions on the left.

It was Hemp who created the opening chance of the game – lifting it into Tessa Wullaert, who headed over the bar after four minutes.

But Gemma Bonner was beaten for pace by Ludmila Da Silva and could only bring her down on the edge of the box in the sixth minute.

Linari took advantage of the resulting free-kick – forcing a save out of City keeper Ellie Roebuck, before her rebound effort was tipped onto the bar.

City had plenty of chances to double their lead with Jill Scott and Hemp causing a nuisance in the box, particularly in the second half.

However, Roebuck had to be alert when Da Silva used her pace to break away again down the right and it was the Brazilian who created the equaliser, beating Demi Stokes on the byeline before cutting the ball back for an unmarked Corral to slot home.

It silenced the majority of the 1,219 fans in attendance – a relatively low crowd for such an anticipated tie.

The result leaves the tie in the balance as City face a tough trip to Madrid against the team that knocked them out in the last 32 of the competition 13 months ago.

Manchester City manager Nick Cushing:“It was a good performance. We dominated periods. We created chances – though not many clear chances.

“We probably proved to ourselves we didn’t play well enough last year but we can still do better. They were probably a little bit unknown to us last year. I didn’t think I picked the right team last year but I wasn’t going to do that again tonight.

“We are capable of winning the second game. The away goal means zero because we had it last year and got beat. We need to try not to concede goals and score. The away goals only really matter if you score again in the second leg.

“I think we can be better at stopping the counter-attacks. We have two tough games but we want to welcome Georgia Stanway and Ellen White back and we’re excited for Manchester United now.”

Manchester City midfielder Jill Scott:“It was tough but we put a shift in. I do think there is another gear from us to come.

“We are very organised. We stop a lot of counters. They have a threat up front in the pace. We know at this level in the game, if you switch off for one moment you can be punished.

“We’re not fearful of going over there and getting a result. I never think we won’t get a goal so we are just looking forward to that game now.”

Atletico Madrid manager Pablo Lopez Salgado:“I tried to give small ideas of how I want my team to play. I have an extraordinary group with players who want to learn. They make it very easy for me.

“I would say it has been a good game. We controlled the game overall. It was a good result for us but we could have won. But obviously I am very happy overall.

On Toni Duggan, Salgado added:“It has only been a week for me working with her. Her attitude is extraordinary. On Sunday in the league she was excellent so I am very happy.”

Atletico Madrid forward Duggan:“It was tough. We knew it would be difficult. We lost our coach which is always difficult. I am so proud of the team. It means so much to us.

“The performance we put in, with the injuries we have got, the week we have had, it was a positive performance from us all.

“The morale has been amazing. It was difficult for everyone when he [former coach Jose Luis Sanchez Vera] left the club. The togetherness in the group is unbelievable.

“We haven’t seen the best from Atletico but we are near the top of the table and competing in the Champions League.”

On her own performances, Duggan added:“I’m getting close. I needed to get back to my place and I know that. I needed time to get myself right on the pitch and off the pitch. I’ve had two difficult injuries so I knew there were areas I needed to work on. I am loving the style of play at Atletico.

On the Lionesses:“I speak to Phil [Neville] a lot. That’s one of the biggest positives I can say about him. I know where I am at in terms of the England squad.

On being favourites:“I don’t really look at stuff like that. I believe in the strength of our squad. Everyone is excited.”

Man City comeback win ends Blues' 100% start in WSL - highlights & report

Manchester City staged a spirited second-half comeback from 2-0 down to end Birmingham City’s 100% winning start in the Women’s Super League.

Blues led with a bizarre own goal as Abbie McManus’ 50-yard backpass caught out visiting goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck.

Meaghan Sergeant’s header made it 2-0 after half-time.

Caroline Weir’s deflected effort and Nikita Parris’ low finish drew Man City level before Tessa Wullaert’s deflected strike completed the turnaround.

The victory came just four days after Manchester City’s early exit from the Women’s Champions League at the hands of Spanish title holders Atletico Madrid.

And, when 2-0 down after 49 minutes, Nick Cushing’s side had appeared set to add to their disappointing week.

But their three goals in the space of 19 minutes stunned an otherwise impressive Birmingham, who had won all of their previous three league games this term by a 1-0 margin.

Having started the day level with Arsenal – and with the Gunners not playing on Sunday – a draw would have sent the hosts top of the table, and they nearly equalised late on when Lucy Staniforth struck the post.

But the visitors, who also hit the woodwork themselves with Weir’s curling second-half free-kick and had seen Parris’ close-range effort cleared off the line by Staniforth in the first half, were thrilled as their dramatic second win of the WSL campaign kept up their unbeaten start.

Birmingham City boss Marc Skinner:

“I’m disappointed in the result obviously, but more the performance. We need to be more mature in controlling the game once you’re up in it. That’s something we’ll definitely work on.

“I have very, very high standards and I still don’t think we met them. Even though we went 2-0 up, it was a fortunate goal.

“I want to win things. It’s my nature. We’re competitive and we’re ambitious. This will hurt, but it’ll make us stronger for the next game.”

Manchester City boss Nick Cushing:

“I have never questioned the spirit of the team. Today it doesn’t surprise me that, once we had the performance and we had the control of the game, we would create opportunities. It’s a good win in the end.

“There’s been a bit of illness, so the squad is light, but we’ve built a squad this year that is probably the most balanced we’ve had.

“That means when you do get a mini [injury] crisis, you can rely on the other players and maybe just shift the system a little bit. The team that went out today showed what a good team we are.”

El Manchester City, preparado para poder luchar por el título

EI Manchester City creó su sección femenina en 1988, pero no ha sido hasta hace una década cuando realmente ha apostado por ella. Con Nick Cushing al mando desde 2014 tras una reestructuración, el City ha alcanzado sus mejores registros: subcampeón de Liga y dos veces semifinalista de Champions. Esta temporada quieren superar esa barrera y levantarse de la decepción del pasado año que se dejó por el camino el título liguero tras un espectacular inicio.

El conjunto inglés se ha reforzado a conciencia para dar ese salto que le falta. El pasado curso empezó como un tiro, invicto y con ocho victorias en nueve partidos. Pero se desinfló y acabó perdiendo la FA WLS. En la Champions, ha conseguido meterse en semifinales en las dos últimas ediciones y ambas con el mismo desenlace: el Olympique de Lyon (después el que alzó ambos trofeos) le dejó sin final. Eso sí, esta es su tercera participación tras quedar subcampeón de liga el pasado curso. Así que esta temporada el conjunto de Manchester ha apostado fuerte para dar ese paso definitivo en el torneo doméstico y en el continental.

Para ello, ha traído ocho caras nuevas y ha mantenido el bloque con jugadoras importantes que, además, son la base de Inglaterra, como la veterana portera Karen Bardsley, habitual con la selección, la capitana y central Stephanie Houghton, 66 veces internacional, la centrocampista Jill Scott, con 79 internacionalidades, y Nick Parris, 49 veces. A estas se suma la calidad que ha llegado en el último año. La delantera danesa Nadia Nadim ha llegado para poner dinamita arriba junto a la belga Tessa Wullaert, la escocesa Caroline Wein y la canadiense Janine Beckie. Además, ha fichado a la sensación inglesa del Mundial Sub-20, Lauren Hemp, a la joven Frances Stenson, de 17 años, y a la veterana inglesa Gemma Bonner. Un equipo con alternativas y las ideas claras. Nick Cushing ha armado un bloque fuerte con un claro 4-3-3 y una gran intensidad desde el inicio. Presión alta para robar arriba y matar los partidos.

EL FEMENINO BUSCA UNA HAZAÑA EN CASA

La Champions comienza para nuestras jugadoras el próximo jueves día 13 (19:30h, en el Miniestadio del Cerro del Espino). Las entradas costarán 10€ para el público en general y serán gratuitas para los socios.

Una vez más en la 1ª ronda, nos ha tocado en suerte un auténtico “coco“. Este “coco” fue el único equipo capaz de plantar cara la temporada pasada al todo poderoso Olympique de Lyon, equipo que solo fue capaz de hacerlas 1 gol en 180 minutos de juego. Para más inri, esta temporada las de Manchester se han reforzado más aún, hasta formar un plantel de estrellas que buscan conseguir su 1ª UEFA Women’s Champions League.

El Manchester City Women’s FC, fue fundado en 1988. Juega en la Premier League Femenina, título que conquistó en la temporada 2016. Las inglesas son las actuales subcampeonas de la Premier League Women’s, puesto que han ocupado en 3 oportunidades.

También han ganado 1 FA Women’s Cup (copa de Inglaterra) y 2 FA WSL Cup (copa de la liga). Llevan en 1ª desde la temporada 2014/15, después de haber conseguido un ascenso administrativo la temporada anterior, consiguiendo aquella temporada el 5º puesto.

Desde el 2016 están afiliadas al primer equipo del Manchester City, motivo por el cual han tenido dinero para incorporar a más jugadoras de primer nivel cada temporada. A día de hoy la plantilla está compuesta por 14 inglesas y 10 jugadoras extranjeras, y todas son internacionales, 9 de ellas juegan en la selección inglesa absoluta.

Las inglesas han llegado a las semifinales de la UEFA Women’s Champions League, en las 2 últimas temporadas, cayendo por 1 solo gol de diferencia en ambas ocasiones, contra las campeonas de las 3 últimas ediciones, el Olympique de Lyon. Las Citizens ocupan actualmente el puesto 3º, en el ranking de clubs femeninos de la UEFA, mientras que el Atleti es el 21º.
