first book of 2024 = finished woooohoooo!!!!

#i read the abominable by dan simmons!#it was VERY good omg #started out exactly as i expected and then about 2/3rds of the way through it took QUITE a different turn than i expected it too!!!!#but it was SUCH an enjoyable read #like i could NOT put it down #its the first book ive read by dan simmons but i loved the way he writes so i am FULLY intending to read more of his stuff #in fact i have the terror on my bookshelf rn and i think that is going to be my next book!#(i will say tho i WAS a little bit bummed when there were no actual abominable creatures (yeti or otherwise) involved fjsjsks)#OH ALSO THE FRAMING NARRATIVE AT THE BEGINNING AND END!?! FUCKING BRILLIANT!!!!!!!#i will not lie he totally got me with it #i was FULLY convinced that part was actually true until i got to the last page of the book where the discussion questions were #and one of them was like 'how did the framing narrative work? did you believe it?' and i was like [surprised pikachu] fhsjska #there is SO much technical stuff about climbing and how that works and the tools and techniques involved #but omg its so easy to follow along and its SO incredibly fascinating to learn about!!!!#anyways i HIGHLY recommend this one!!!!#mack reads

#oceandi speaks #the secretary's third life #technically this is still gene I guess but it's not actually him #just like gahhhhh I want him to be a little guy who has a few good friends in town and runs his bookstore so well and tries to stay out of #trouble and he's friends with the knights but one day he's discovered to be the long-lost prince of the kingdom and is whisked away to #parties and balls and nobles trying to use him as a puppet to gain favor with the current monarchy #but the current king's family is on to the fact that his half-sister and the knights are planning to overthrow them #they're the true heirs to the kingdom but they want to dismantle the system so the current king summons monsters and destroys a bunch of #places like gene's little shop and that's all the setup to the original story done #but the great magician turns back time and gene has a chance to prove himself as the prince earlier to give the rebels the upper hand #in the meantime all the normal tropes are also playing out like truck-kun (mandatory) and marriage letters and spies and fairs and stuff #tag rambling #listen listen I read romance isekais when I'm really stressed about the world (so - daily) but I want them to be queer :(#not just 'oh I'm disguised as a man' and not just 'the main character thinks people are gay but she's wrong and that's why it's funny' :(

I think if a tumblr user says anything about history they should include Chicago style citations in the post. This is also true for other areas of study but I don't really know much about those so I only get filled with a blind rage when history posts are wrong. So that's what we need to fix first. For me.

#This is also true of my own posts and it's literally why #I try to only put history stuff in the tags instead of in proper posts #(so if I am wrong misinformation doesn't spread) and when I do I try to cite where I hot my information from #As best I can without doxing myself #Ie most of my information about maritime history comes from my job not classes so I only say 'I work at a history museum'#Not the specific museum I got that information from because that's not safe imo #Otherwise I'll say 'I got this from class' or 'I got this from a research projim working on' or a documentary or a book or etc etc #And if I say something like that you can always send an ask or a dm and I'll give you my sources!#But I don't include that stuff in actual posts because I'm at a weird point in my education #Where I'm technically trusted as a source of information for some people (working at the museum) but I still don't have my bachelors let #Alone the masters so I really don't feel comfortable positioning myself as an expert because I'm certainly not one #Which is why it makes me so frustrated when people who obviously have way less training than me (which is difficult! Like I said I won't #Even finish undergrad until this spring!) position themselves as experts and then just fucking #Lie about a field I care deeply about #Like on top of everything else I'm going into public history so it's about to be my job to clean up your mess. What the hell dude #This isn't about any specific post or person just the general trend of misinformation on this site #There is worse misinformation I know but I also truly believe that know history is necessary to making informed decisions about the present #And when you're mistaken about history or even worse completely rewriting it... That's bad #General rule of thumb if a history 'fact' 100%#Reflects your world view with no issues it's probably propaganda or at least not the whole story. With very few exceptions.#To quote Oscar Wilde 'the truth is rarely pure and never simple'#I made a lot of typos here don't worry about it. You get it.

Hi! Have you seen that nct jaehyun, dooyoung and jungwoo made a sub-unit? Their song is called perfume and it is just SO FUN! The song itself reminds me of some of the old suju songs because the beat is so fun and makes you wanna dance, but the choreography is also ridiculously fun! You should check it out) I was reading your posts about the lack of fun in kpop, and this was honestly very refreshing to see. The mini-album is also quite good, and they even did a live-band cover of their songs. As always, nct guys are incredibly talented musically, good job

ok yes loving daisy jones so far bc i did just re read the book today so i’m back in it but my one qualm so far is that daisy is not unhinged like?? i don’t mind what minor plot/story changes they have made so far in fact i like it bc the book is completely told by multiple unreliable narrators that’s the whole point esp with the “plot twist” billy’s version (and daisys to less of an extent but still close to it bc she cared about camilla so she wouldn’t want to hurt julia) of things can’t be believed at all lmaooo so i don’t mind the changes i feel it’s a good way to frame it more real or whatever but my issue is why is Daisy so like put together??? she was insane and off her shit from age fourteen but so far three eps in she’s so ?? composed?? even in daisys unreliable pov of the book she knows she was an addict and a disaster and billy too on the first tour but in the show it’s so toned down maybe for viewer rating sakes? like maybe they can’t show heroin on prime shows idk lmaooo

#i do like it so far tho #i knew there would be A LOt of changes from the source material so i’m not like upset or shocked at what’s different so far #making a show BASED on a book is a whole thing bc u have to market it for ppl who haven’t read it as well it’s not meant to be #like catering directly to readers they have to make it to appeal to the general audience of ppl who have never heard of the book otherwise #they make no money so i get it and even before the early reviews came out i knew exactly what they would say that it veers off from the book #but i just think daisy should have been shown in a more real light she’s so together and sober in the show #not saying i enjoy the fact she was so addicted and a disaster but it was real that’s why ppl loved it bc it’s true that’s how it was like #she is and the book is based on real ppl #also pls don’t take my semi passionate ranting as an endorsement for the author LOL #tjr has stuff i like but not love i don’t think she’s revolutionary or anything close to that #like look at evelyn i loved it for like less that 24 hours i read it in a night and by two days later when the reader high faded i was like #wait actually……#you know?? and even daisy book i was never hooked x that hard when i first read it i was like yeah that was a fun read but also read it in #less than three hours it was just an easy light fun read in my opinion based on the books i gravitate to it was very light #and i reread it today and yes i enjoyed it immensely bc that’s how it was written in a fast paced enjoyable feel things briefly way #but the thing about tjr is i don’t think it was meant to read in a light way bc i see so many ppl like dying emotionally over her books and #i’m just like?? her writing isn’t that ‘deep’ or well tbh good #but it is goood in the way that it’s a good read technical skills aside it is entertaining and i do like a couple of hers #sorry i’m not shitting on her i like her but there are some aspects of her writing/her that i take issue with mainly in evelyn but that’s #another long ass topic/rant #i am a book snob i think LOL i’m sorry i’m i want to make it clear #just bc a book is an easy read doesn’t mean it’s BAD i just read a lot #like 300+ books a year since i was ten and that’s not me trying to flex it’s depressing truly bc i read to escape my fucked up issues #anyway #ummmm #i’m excited for more episodes LOL #i am really i’m loving it so far bc i need to feel something so this helps a bit

Just remembered how after my autistic diagnose every offical person was so careful to approach me about it at first. I know that's probably standard bc not everyone will like those news or know how to handle it but I legit just had doctors go 'hey... So... Are you okay? How do you feel?' and I was like 'haha, nice, so I haven't just been faking/now I know why I'm so different'

#miranda talking shit #And i mean... I wouldnt be diagnosed at all if i didnt personally call for it. I wouldn't have been able to see anyone unless i brought it #Up. Bc ive always been good at masking no one even considerd i was on the spectrum. And it wasnt until i got friends who was diagnosed and #Discussed it with me and their experiences + me reading up on it myself ... Where i was like wait uh ... Actually lol that's me haha #But i know plenty of people probably don't like to get the diagnosis. For me personally it was 90% a gopd thing #It felt a lot like... Ive always known i was 'diffrent' and ive always felt something was so wrong with me bc i didny work like other peope #And then it was like .... No im different but this is the thing that makes me different and its not something 'wrong' with me #For me it felt very freeing to get i guess a label or name on why im different. Before iy was all just... On me?#Like it was my own fault. Why couldnt i do this or just act normal why couldnt i just handle things others could? It all felt very. ...#Personal. Like it was my own fault ? Idk man. It was just great to get a reason to why i was diffrent and that it actually ... Made sense?#There were reasons behind why i got so overwhelmed or behaved weirdly etc yeah #My relationship with my own autism is the weirdest shit ever bc i dont personally think there's many positives with this diagnose #I can think of 10 cons per 1 pro basically but i also... Never had any bad feelings about getting it on paper that i have it?#I know my life would be much easier if i didnt have it. But i also know it cant be cured and is just part of me so #I have a fairly good or at least neatrul general feeling about it. Before i was diagnosed I'd cry and have breakdowns as to #Why i was so weird and why i couldnt be like everyone else. I got that on an weekly basis. After my diagnose? Very rarely.#I guess thats why im so... Supporting and maybe pushing others who think they are on the spectrum to check it out #Many will think oh but it doesnt DO anything. It doesnt change anything. It doesnt help to get it on paper ya know ?#And well yeah i guess technically that's true but man idk. If you have ever felt alienated like ive been my entire childhood and teen years #Getting the diagnose was so nice. And i got to learn about myself in much different ways than before. #reading lyrics to normal album again #and i was surprised the annotater didnt connect these two lines #they said the fun fact isn't technically true #really looking at the lyrics makes me realize how depressingly nihilistic it all is #but ofc these lyrics were lovingly written down and edited #and matched with music #and sung with passion over and over #you cant do all that without some love and hope #you cant seperate the medium from the message #i was also surprised how many references there were to will woods actual life #like mental health and gender expression #i was assuming the voice of album was a character #now im torn between wanting to experience the album as it is or learn more about the musician #dear diary
