A federal judge on Wednesday suspended new drilling and fracking on 605 federal oil and gas leases spanning 403,820 acres of greater sage grouse habitat in Wyoming and Montana.

Magistrate Judge Ronald Bush ruled that the Bureau of Land Management violated federal law by failing to justify its refusal to defer leasing in priority greater sage grouse habitat, failing to provide baseline data about the bird’s populations in the lease areas and failing to analyze site-specific and cumulative impacts to the bird.

“The Trump administration blatantly violated federal law in its zeal to open public lands to oil and gas drilling, as this decision confirms,” said Laird Lucas, executive director of Advocates for the West, a public interest environmental law firm that handled the case. “As the court found, the imperiled sage-grouse is particularly harmed by oil and gas development, yet the Trump BLM refused to acknowledge those impacts and misled the public. It is time for the Biden administration to abandon these unlawful Trump decisions.”

Wednesday’s order is the second ruling flowing from a 2018 lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s failure to rigorously evaluate potential harms to greater sage grouse from oil and gas leasing and extraction. The bird’s population has declined precipitously and become the focus of nationwide conservation efforts. A 2020 order in the same lawsuit voided 1 million acres of leases and rejected a policy slashing public participation in leasing decisions.

“This continues a long string of legal victories that are key to the survival of the imperiled greater sage grouse and the vanishing sagebrush ecosystem,” said Michael Saul, a senior attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity. “It’s another stunning defeat for the Trump administration’s serial lawbreaking policies. This spectacular bird has been spared to dance another day across the Montana and Wyoming landscape.”

Some of the Wyoming leases sold were in the nation’s highest-density sage grouse concentration areas, including the “Golden Triangle” in the Upper Green River Valley and the northern Red Desert. Some of the leases also would have authorized gas field development across the recently discovered Red Desert to Hoback mule deer migration corridor, considered the longest land mammal migration in the lower 48 states.

Krisis COVID telah menghancurkan banyak hal. Pada tanggal 20 Februari 2021, Covid telah tercatat di angka 111 juta kasus dan merenggut 2,45 juta jiwa. Sebagai perbandingan, penduduk kota Depok adalah 2,41 juta jiwa. Artinya, jika Covid cuma terjadi di Depok, ia telah sukses membuat Depok punah dari muka bumi.

Kasus di Indonesia sendiri belum menggembirakan. Tercatat sudah 1,25 juta kasus dan 33.969 jiwa wafat. Ini setengah dari kapasitas Stadion Gelora Bung Karno. Bayangkan Anda tengah menonton sepak bola dengan penonton penuh, lalu setengah dari mereka tewas serentak. Mengerikan.

Situasi ini telah mendorong banyak negara untuk berbenah, salah satunya di bidang ekonomi. Mereka mulai meninggalkan ekonomi karbon dan mulai mengembangkan green economy. Orang-orang mulai paham bahwa kesehatan penting. Tak disangka, green economy adalah salah satu sektor yang berkembang di masa covid ini.

Kelak, tentu saja green economy memunculkan green jobs (pekerjaan ramah lingkungan).

 Apa itu Green Jobs?

Katadata mengutip World Economic Forum bahwa ekonomi hijau seperti 1) pangan, pemanfaatan lahan dan laut; 2) infrastruktur dan lingkungan buatan; 3) serta energi dan industri ekstraktif dapat menghasilkan peluang bisnis senilai US$ 10,1 triliun (Rp140 ribu trilyun) dan 395 juta lapangan pekerjaan pada tahun 2030.

Peluang itu akan memunculkan apa yang disebut dengan pekerjaan ramah lingkungan (green jobs). SIngkatnya, green jobs adalah pekerjaan yang layak secara penghasilan sekaligus bisa membantu menyelamatkan lingkungan. Di Indonesia sendiri, menurut perhitungan Rafika Dewi, Green Jobs bisa membuka lapangan pekerjaan sampai 4,2 juta buah. Jumlah yang tidak sedikit bukan?

Untuk menangkap peluang luar biasa di masa depan itu, pemerintah Indonesia sudah berkomitmen untuk menyiapkan anak-anak muda supaya memiliki skill di green jobs ini. Dalam ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting (ALMM) ke-25, Indonesia bersama negara-negara tetangga juga menyatakan komitmennya untuk mengkampanyekan green jobs. Persiapan ini juga melibatkan banyak institusi, misalnya Kementerian Lingkungan Hidup, Kementerian Industri, Apindo, dan unsur-unsur lainnya.

Sebenarnya, untuk mendeteksi jenis-jenis green jobs yang akan muncul di Indonesia agak menyulitkan. Sebab, dunia masa kini berubah dengan cepat. Siapa yang menyangka di tahun 2019 bahwa tahun depannya, dunia akan diserang virus Covid yang ganas?

Bisa jadi green jobs pun akan berubah dengan cepat dan kita terus dituntut untuk beradaptasi. Namun, bagaimanapun juga, prediksi ini tetap diperlukan sebagai kompas kita dalam bergerak. a. Cari tahu lebih jauh soal green jobs. Peluang ini relatif masih baru dan belum banyak yang tahu. Oleh karena itu, kita harus mencari tahu lebih banyak dari sumber-sumber internet yang ada. Pelajarilah lebih jauh. Baca artikel-artikel yang terkait dengan green jobs, video wawancara, dan lainnya.

b. Bergabung ke komunitas green jobs dan sustainability. Carilah komunitas-komunitas nasional maupun global terkait lingkungan lalu gabunglah ke sana. Ini adalah langkah yang tepat untuk mempersiapkan karirmu di green jobs, sebab lebih baik punya teman banyak dibanding sendirian kan.  

c. Follow akun sosial media soal green jobs, lingkungan, dan terhubung dengan orang-orang di bidang ini. Contohnya adalah coaction. Ada banyak sekali update dan info terbaru yang ditawarkan oleh akun-akun ini. Orang-orang di bidang ini juga biasanya senang berbagai di sosial media mereka. Cobalah untuk terhubung dan kenalan dengan mereka.

d. Coba ikut webinar dan workshop terkait green jobs. Di masa depan, pasti webinar dan workshop terkait topic ini akan sering muncul. Ikutlah dan gabung ke acara-acara semacam ini untuk terhubung dengan topic ini lebih sering.

 To do list 5 tahun:

a. Siapkan S1 dan S2 di bidang green jobs. Apakah kamu seorang mahasiswa S1? Jika iya, persiapkan lah S2 kamu yang berhubungan dengan green jobs, contohya di Lund University. Sebenarnya tidak harus di sana. Tentu saja kamu bisa kuliah di tempat lain. Dengan memasang target sejak sekarang, kamu memiliki banyak waktu untuk mempersiapkannya. Kamu 2-3 langkah di depan teman sebayamu.

b. Cari lowongan dan kalau memungkinkan ikutlah magang. Untuk mencari info sedini mungkin, saya menyarankan untuk magang di perusahaan yang membuka green jobs. Tujuannya untuk menimba pengalaman awal dulu.

c. Tulis buku simpel tentang green & sustainability. Menurut saya, ini adalah langkah besar dan tidak banyak orang lain yang berpikir hal sama. Dengan menulis buku, kamu menjadi jauh lebih menonjol dibanding orang lain di industry green jobs ini. Kamu tidak harus membahas hal-hal rumit dan ilmiah jika kamu tidak sanggup. Intinya buatlah buku yang menjelaskan pandanganmu dan apa yang sudah kamu lakukan terkait masalah lingkungan.

d. Personal branding digital. Bangunlah personal branding digital dengan cara berbagi konten tentang lingkungan di sosial mediamu. Ini akan membuat nilai dirimu naik secara luar biasa.

e. Ikut ecourse, non gelar, workshop, dan sertifikasi. Saat ini sudah banyak online course tentang lingkungan. Sebagian dari mereka bahkan ada yang dipersiapkan dengan sangat serius oleh pengajar-pengajar yang berlevel internasional, baik dalam bentuk workshop serius maupun sertifikasi. Jadi, saran saya ikutilah hal-hal itu.

f. Coba jadi reseller perusahaan-perusahaan lingkungan untuk coba langsung masuk ke industri itu. Ada beberapa perusahaan yang produknya ramah lingkungan dan membuka sistem reseller. Hemat saya, jadilah reseller itu dan masukilah industri itu sejak dini. Dengan menjadi reseller dan mencoba menjual produk yang bersangkutan, kamu akan tahu kondisi realitas market yang ada di Indonesia yang terkait dengan lingkungan. Sejauh apa marketnya? Apa yang kurang? Apa yang harus dikembangkan? Dan seterusnya. Pertanyaan-pertanyaan itu bisa terjawab olehmu jika kamu sudah terjun langsung ke industri yang bersangkutan.

 Itulah tips-tips yang bisa kamu lakukan untuk mempersiapkan karir green jobs di masa setidaknya 5 tahun lagi. Selamat mencoba!

Resources for Keeping Current on Emerging Technology

 Technology is ever-changing and we need a way to keep up with it. Working in a technological field, it is our responsibility to be knowledgeable. To do this, we must utilize quality resources to stay updated on all current technology. Some of the suggestions on this list are ones I have had personal use with and others are options I recently discovered that I plan to utilize in the future.

     Kickstart (https://www.kickstarter.com/discover/categories/technology) is actually a resource I would use for emerging technology. While not all technology on here will be developed, often when a good idea is seen on here technology-wise, there will enough supporters to bring the idea to life. Even if this technology is not developed, it gives us a good idea of what technology-creators are looking at next. One example I have found on here is a digital coffee pour-over machine with spinning and heating technology.

  Ted Talks (https://www.ted.com/talks?sort=newest&topics%5B%5D=Technology) are also a good resource for staying current on technology. These videos try to always bring up things that are currently popular and they are a great resource for someone who is more of an audio learner then a reader. It is easy to find a Ted Talk on almost any subject, including different subjects within the technology world. An example I have found here is a talk on how AR has the possibility to make us feel more connected to the world. This is good for broader technology topics.

   ReviewTechUSA (https://www.youtube.com/reviewtechusa) and Linus Tech Tips (https://www.youtube.com/linustechtips) are two YouTubers that cover it all. Review Tech covers more the gaming side of this and Linus covers almost everything from computer, gaming, phones, etc. These are great because you have both the video visuals and the audio. Typically this would be more visual then a Ted Talk so this would be a different option. One example of technology found through this is the latest phone.

 Utilizing news articles is great. When new technology emerges, often there will be posts about it in the news. You can utilize anything from Google News (https://news.google.com/topics/CAAqJggKIiBDQkFTRWdvSUwyMHZNRGRqTVhZU0FtVnVHZ0pWVXlnQVAB?hl=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US:en) to the Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/technology/). In this case you can pick your favorite news source and access the technology section. While news isn’t technology-specific, this will probably give a broad overview of the new technology. An example I have found here is an article explain Libra, Facebook’s new cryptocurrency.

  Lastly, my favorite resource as a graphic designer for new technology is Adobe (https://news.adobe.com/). This is a bit specific because this is more about the technology updates in Adobe programs. This is actually why this is such an important resource though. The specifics of this will really help me stay updated with what’s going on in my field. Adobe talks about everything from updates to their programs to the latest design trends so they will forever be a great resource.

The Nature Project is an innovative new collaborative project comprised of a series of enquiries connected with Environmental change, such as the role of forests and peatlands in Climate Change. This multidisciplinary body of work combines art and research in collaboration with Trinity College Dublin and The Heritage Office in Monaghan. The primary research is situated on the landscape of Bragan mountain and the Arctic glaciers to explore the Anthropocene as a powerful lens for looking at the relationships between humans and nature. Artist Siobhán McDonald will coordinate a programme of activities across partnering institutions: residencies, exhibitions and talks. The intention of this project is to foster creative and critical reflections about environmental challenges that our society is currently facing. Over the course of 3 years (2020-2022), Siobhán will research blanket bogs, peatlands and plants as a site for exploring the ecological concerns of our time. Siobhán's art practice draws attention to contemporary topics dealing with air, breath and atmospheric phenomena, weaving scientific knowledge into her art in a poetic and thoughtful manner. Her works manifest in many forms including painting, drawing, film and sound. In 2020 she is selected to work with European Cultural Institutions such as: Gluon, Center for Fine Arts BOZAR and Ars Electronica on a new project until 2023 about environmental change. Seaweed Baths - Day 6

After driving down to Enniscone we spotted a sign for some traditional seaweed baths. In my ‘say yes to eveything’ type way, we decided to check it out.

These baths are one of only a handful left in Ireland. They pour heated seawater  into a bath and fill it with serrated wrack seaweed freshly picked from the nearby shores. You also have a traditional wooden box sauna you. This place has been here over 100 years and I loved the oroginal tiiling and baths that were being used.

After having our first bath of the holiday and feeling slightly cleaner, we travelled on to the Dun Briste sea stack which has a great blow hole there. The sea was fairly calm so it wasnt as dramatic as I would have liked. 

This section of Atlantic coast is actually full of stacks, caves and all sorts of interesting geological slip formations. 

 I wanted to go to a place called Ceide fields  - an extensive neolithic site with evidence of habitation going back over 5000 years. Als though, it was closed due to Covid-19.

Disappointed, I drove on to Lough Conn, for a fabulous view, a quiet night and a rainbow!

Ireland Moto Trip Day 03

Donegal to Wesport - Minnaun Cliffs, random churches, and failed camping attempts

We got a late start to Day 3 and probably didn’t take off from Donegal until around noon. We were still working out the kinks of packing in the best way. Because Tyler and I were hoping to find a camp spot, we unpacked our hard cases every night and repacked the next day even if we were staying in the same hotel. Once we got our bags organized in a better way, we were able to only take a few things in each night, and leave most of the camp gear locked on the bike.  Before we even got to our first official stop at Minnaun Cliffs, we saw a random abandoned church and stopped to explore. Those are my favorite types of spots and this one had been abandoned for a long time. The walls were still completely in tact but there was no roof, and full size trees were growing inside the old church. We climbed a pretty sketchy ladder in the tower to get a better view from the top. Even though the church was abandoned, some of the graves were as new as 2016. Not a bad place to be buried, if you’re into that sort of thing. You could see for miles.

Our next stop was Ceide Field Neolithic site and Minnaun Cliffs. The overlook was pretty stunning and my dad could not get over how there were cows at pasture all the way out to the cliffs edge, meaning some farmer owned that land. Most of Ireland is farmland or preserved historic buildings, so we were excited to be riding into Ballycroy National Park, where Tyler and I split off convinced we could find a camp spot. It turns out Ireland’s national parks are much different than ours and are mainly for preservation, not viewing or camping. We had read online that it was indeed legal to camp as long as you were 40 meters from a road. But….there were no roads leading into the park. We took gravel road after gravel road and kept ending up at farm properties and remote houses with no crossings into Ballycroy. We were kicking ourselves for not yet having the GoPro properly set up - we had to stop for at least four cows in the middle of the roads, and the farmers didn’t seem to happy about us being on their roads.

We finally found a dirt road that looked promising - except for the steel barrier keeping us from crossing. Tyler managed to get one of the bikes around it (not without difficulty) so we doubled up to ride down the road and see where it led. We almost went down together a few times trying to get through some of the sandier stretches of road. It didn’t really seem to lead anywhere in particular. We found an old abandoned house and barn and decided to go back to the other bike and make a final plan for the night. At this point the flies, or whatever they were, were so thick you could barely put your helmet on without getting them trapped inside. We couldn’t tell whether this road was part of the park, or just outside the boundaries. We really wanted to camp but ultimately made the decision to ride onto the hotel, not knowing whether we’d wake up to a pissed off farmer or not.

We rode past Clew Bay into Wesport while the sun was setting, and the pictures don’t come close to doing it justice. I was leading for part of that night ride, until I came around a corner with a high embankment on the left and just missed hitting a sheep that was huddled up right next to the road. I made Tyler lead the rest of the way so he could risk being the sheep murderer ; ) 

By the time we got to the Wyatt Hotel in Westport, I was completely beat. The route that day was 250km but with all the searching we had done I imagine we rode about 350km on back roads and gravel. It doesn’t seem like much by American standards, but it is when the roads are so narrow that oncoming traffic is an actual threat. That night we decided to do our proper research, determined not to leave Ireland without one night in a tent.
