For the Greater Good - TMR REWRITE Chapter Ten
[TMR REWRITE-MASTERLIST]
Previous Chapter / Next Chapter
Summary: After Teresa called WICKED on them when the group had just reached the Right Arm that same day, Minho and Grace were both abducted by the organization while their friends barely made it out. Thomas had to watch his sister and one of his closest friend get dragged onboard of the helicarrier, unable to do anything to help them. For 6 months, they were locked up in a facility and experimented on until Thomas, Newt and a back-from-the-dead Gally came to their rescue.

Grace tilted her head back and she stared at the overhead lights with a heavy sigh. Her muscles felt so sore. She pulled at her wrists in frustration, but she was handcuffed to a chair, in a small room with a table and another chair facing each other like the one where Janson had briefly questioned Grace and Thomas back when they got to the facility, except this room was bright and white. Her heart ached as she remembered her brother struggling against Jorge, trying to get to her and Minho to save them, calling out their names, yelling at the top of his lungs. She feared what they were going to do to her and Minho here. It had only been a day since they were taken from the Right Arm camp, which went up in flames after WICKED came. All because of Teresa. Grace heard the handle move and the door open. A guard held out the door to no other than Teresa. She dared to greet Grace with a friendly smile. She was met by a death stare.
“How are you feeling?” She sat in front of Thomas’ sister as the door was closed behind her. Grace stared at her without saying anything. Teresa sighed softly, joining her hand on the table. She was trying so hard to come off as welcoming and agreeable, but Grace would never let her forget what she did to all of them by betraying them. “If your muscles are still hurting a little, it’s normal. It should be gone in a couple days.”
“Yeah, I doubt that.” Grace finally spoke, though her words were referring instead to the knife she had stuck in their backs. She was bitter and resented Teresa. Straightening up, she asked, “Where’s Minho?”
“He is being checked by a doctor. Just like you were, when you were still passed out.”
“I want to see him.”
“I’m sorry, Grace. I don’t think Janson and Chancellor Paige will allow that.”
“Do you like that? Huh? Being WICKED’s dog?” Grace asked. She didn’t have to raise her voice very much to let her anger show. Teresa looked at her like she was sad to see her react like this, as if it was surprising after what happened.
“Look, Grace, I came here to tell you something. I’m sorry it had to happen this way, really, but… we need you to help us.”
“You need my blood, not me. Why are you even here acting like you’re trying to bargain with me? Why do you act like you care?”
“This could all be so much easier if you agree to help us.” As she was talking, the door opened, and Janson walked in. He sized up Grace and stood by the table, hands behind his back.
“She’s right. This could all be so much easier if you just agree to help us. Because you know, that if you’re being too difficult… we will take what we want from you anyhow.” He threatened her with this annoyance in his eyes contradicting the smile on his face. “We have much to do right now. We’ll deal with her later, take her to her room.”
He waved nonchalantly at Grace, and she was grabbed by two soldiers who entered as he left. They grabbed her by the arms and not giving her time to get support on her feet, she was dragged out of the room and brought down the corridors. They passed many people in white coats and continued without stopping until they reached a door. At eye level along the wall was a window that looked out into the room within. It was a small room with a single bed with white sheets and blankets and a small light wooden table against the wall, with a chair. A guard slipped a card in a slot provided for this purpose, next to the door and a beep signalled the opening of the latter. She was pushed inside. They left her in handcuffs, and she turned back to the door, which beeped again as it locked. She also realized that the window was obscured from inside the room. They could see her, but she was cut off from what was going on in the halls. She sat on the bed and let her head fall on the pillow. She had no idea what Teresa wanted to tell her. Janson had cut their conversation short after probably being too annoyed by Grace’s behaviour. She was way too angry to comply and be obedient anyway.
As the days passed, Grace felt more and more on edge. She was locked in a room in which we could observe her without her knowledge and the lights were never turned off, which made her have a lot of trouble sleeping. She wasn't doing anything the whole day and the time seemed excruciatingly long. She thought that maybe they were trying to wear her out and push her to the edge so she would be too exhausted to fight back, or maybe they were just preparing the next tortures she would be subjected to. The only time she had some interactions was when she was brought food, and even then, the guards weren’t the most talkative, or when she was taken to get some blood drawn. It was really bugging her how they were just leaving her alone. She knew something was coming, and she also knew that she wouldn’t like it, whatever it would be. After a couple weeks, she was visited again by Teresa, directly in her room this time. The door buzzed loudly, and she sat up on her bed. The woman walked in, followed by an armed soldier.
“How are you feeling?” She asked, pulling the chair away from the table and sitting down.
“Are you going to ask me that every time you talk to me?”
“I’m just being mindful. You might believe me, but I care about your wellbeing, and Minho’s.” Her voice was soft, but it wasn’t fooling Grace. “I really need to have this talk with you, and I would prefer to do it myself. Janson won’t be as patient.”
“Oh, you’re so kind.” Grace rolled her eyes, pulling at the handcuffs, looking away from Teresa.
“We have been running tests on the blood samples we collected from you, Minho, and the others. You must have notified we weren’t taking you out of your room very often. We compared—”
“Get to the fucking point already.” Grace cut her off, sighing.
“We discovered something in your blood. The enzyme your brain produces is 110 percent more efficient against the flare.” She sounded excited and happy about what she was telling her, but it was all gibberish to her ears. “Not only do your body fights off the flare, but it also controls it. It’s as if it was assimilating to your system, rendering it harmless to you. You’re more immune than anyone else we’ve seen. Even more than Thomas.”
Grace instantly looked back at Teresa when she mentioned her brother. What she was saying was somehow not very surprising. This was a theory she had ever since she saw them draw so much blood from her at the facility in the desert. And now, she had the confirmation that there was something more about her and her blood, something that was very interesting and precious to WICKED. They probably already knew about it but needed a lot of her blood to run a few more tests and be sure. In any case, they took their time doing it.
“So? What now?” Grace enquired, holding her hands tightly to keep from fidgeting with her fingers.
“We are on the right track to synthesize a cure, thanks to you, Grace.” The latter glanced at Teresa. She would never get out of here if she was their golden ticket to a cure. They would never let her go and it made her grow anxious. So anxious about what they would do to her to get it that she was petrified. “We still need to conduct a few tests, and we need to find someone to try it on but we’re positive we can do it.”
“And why are you telling me this? They don’t need my permission to make me their lab rat.” Grace spat through her gritted teeth.
“I don’t want them to hurt you, that is why.” This made her let out a chuckle. She didn’t believe her anymore. She didn’t believe she actually cared, because she jeopardized the safety of everyone to get here and to get to this. Grace surprised herself when she spoke.
“I’ll agree to help you.” She turned her head to Teresa. “But I have a couple conditions.”
“Tell me.”
“I want them to conduct tests and shit, only on me. Not on Minho, or the others. I won’t fight back… if they leave him alone. Torture me not him.”
“You won’t be tortured, Grace—”
“Don’t bullshit me, please. Just go tell them and get on with it.” She looked away, gulping quietly. Teresa said she would go talk to Paige and see what she could do, promising her to do her best but she didn’t care about her worthless promises. She didn’t meet Teresa’s gaze again when she left and had a gloomy face, staring into space, as if she had signed her death certificate. To ensure Minho’s wouldn’t be tortured by WICKED, she had negotiated that everything be done to her, without having the slightest idea of how far their experiments would go and that thought alone made her feel sick to her stomach. She knew that if Minho was here, he would have never let her do this, but he wasn’t, and she didn’t want them to hurt him for the sake of science when they already had what they needed to make a cure with her. If she could ensure he would be safe, she was ready to do anything, even if it led to her death, though she prayed it wouldn’t come to that. She wanted to see her brother again. She wanted to Newt and all her friends again. She wanted to see Sonya again and get to know her, which she would never be able to do if she died at the hands of WICKED. It took until the next day for Teresa to come back. She talked to Chancellor Paige, and she had agreed to leave Minho out of this, the only condition was for Grace to never be difficult and agree to every test they would need to do. She agreed and knew it was going to be a long way to hell.

Her bare feet sinking into the snow, Grace walked on without really knowing where to go. Strangely, she didn't feel the cold, despite the fact that she wasn't wearing shoes or a jacket. Her clothes were thin, but she didn't seem to mind the temperature, which was probably in the negatives given the snow that was falling nonstop. She saw a forest straight ahead. There was nothing else on the horizon, so she headed there with a quiet step. As she approached the edge of the forest, she heard someone calling her, which caused her to go deeper into the woods, so that soon she found herself in the shade of the trees and of their tall, thick foliage. She walked blindly, following the voice that echoed around her. She only realized after getting too far into the forest that the snow had disappeared around her. She stepped on a branch that creaked under her foot. Suddenly, everything became silent, and the atmosphere changed drastically. The air became heavy and thick, and she found it harder and harder to breathe. Gasping for air, she held her hands to her throat and collapsed.
She was choking and there was nothing she could do. She closed her eyes for a second and as she tried to take deep breaths, she felt water seep through her nose and mouth and found herself banging furiously against a glass wall. This time, she felt the coldness in the water she was immersed in, right down to her bones. She wanted to hold her breath but the water she had already breathed made her cough and take deeper breaths. His vision was blurring. She no longer had the strength to hit the glass in front of her and her body shook with a brutal spasm, then another and she felt like falling into an abyssal void. Everything was dark around her. She let go and opened her eyes when she heard the heartbreaking cry of a Griever. Without thinking she took a deep breath and felt air fill her lungs, but the relief was short lived. She got up and quickly realized that she was in the labyrinth, in the middle of the night. She didn't even try to understand the meaning of everything that was happening, as if it seemed normal. There was a second screech that echoed through the corridors of the maze, and she began to run at full speed, not even knowing if she was getting closer to the monster or if she was moving away from it. She didn't care about being barefoot, she just ran breathlessly, terrified of coming face to face with one of her half-machines, half-organic creatures.
Taking a turn, she slipped and fell heavily to the ground. She felt her body go to the side and she slid into a wide gap between the platform and the wall. She screamed at the top of her lungs and fell silent when she realized that she was glued to the stone wall. She felt like her whole body was trembling from the inside. Her breath was shaky as well and she heard the metallic clinging of the Griever climbing up the wall. The creature covered her body and she found herself only inches from his head. He opened his mouth, letting out a squealing scream, bringing up a foul smell from the bowels of the earth. She closed her eyes as hard as she could and turned her head to the side, her face distorted with fear, and screamed. When she opened her eyes again, it took her a few seconds to stop and realize where she was. Her throat hurt like hell, but with a quick look around reminded her that she was not back in the maze. She heard the voice of a scientist rise in the room. She was barely catching her breath, her eyes wide from what she had been put through. After a minute, she was taken out of whatever machine she was in and carried to a bed. Her whole body felt drained of any ounce of energy that she ever had, as if she had turned into a ragdoll. She was strengthless. Her arms hanging loosely along the bed, she stared above her, breathing weakly.
The bed she was moved around on was pushed against a wall. Her vision was still blurry, but she could make out the shapes of several people, busy around her. She felt her arms being lifted and then rested on the sides of the bed. Her eyes moved slowly, and she tried to focus and follow some of the movements. She watched as plastic bags were hooked to IV poles on each side of her bed. One of the pouches contained a liquid that appeared to be translucent and the others a dark red liquid. She guessed the many tubes she could see linked the bags to her body, but she couldn't feel anything. The noises of machines and the words exchanged around her mixed in an incessant buzzing as if she was surrounded by a thousand bees. She saw someone lean over her and place a mask over her face. She took a breath, and her eyes grew heavier and heavier, until they closed completely, and she let herself sink in the dark again.

She did everything they asked of her, and she was still not allowed to see Minho, but Teresa assured he was being taken care of and not tested on. She didn’t trust her, but she had to take her word for it since she couldn’t check for herself. The only thing to do was hoping they were keeping their word. With Grace in their hands, it didn’t take the scientists as long as she thought to try and see if their vaccine actually cured people from the flare. What would take a little more time would be to see how long the cure they made was effective before they got sick again, if they got sick again at all, because there was a world where it did work out perfectly and in which Grace turned out to be the source of the cure for all of humanity. If it was the world they were in, Grace would be condemned to serve as their supply for the creation of this vaccine and would never see the light of the sun ever again. She would be sucked dry by these vampires, but they would act as if they were so grateful of her sacrifice. The sacrifice of a 17-year-old girl who happened to be more immune to the flare than others. To her great misfortune. But if they had gotten Thomas as well, he would be subjected to the exact same treatment and she didn’t want that, though she didn’t want to die for those greedy, selfish people either. While she was plunged into a vegetative state for months at a time, she only dreamed of one thing.
Getting out of there and seeing her brother and friends again.
She wanted to have another chance at life. She wanted to be more than what they saw in her. Maybe, if she could make it out of there alive, she could also see if anything could come out of that spark she felt when meeting Sonya.
Grace wasn’t really being told anything anymore and she couldn’t even get out of bed. She had been transferred to a bigger room where she was strapped to a sort of hospital bed, her arms stretched out to the sides. So many tubes were connected to the crooks of her elbows, the backs of her hands and really, wherever they could stick a needle, they had. She was bedridden and fed through a tube that had been inserted in her skin and into her stomach and an oxygen mask was sometimes slapped on her face to put her to sleep. When she was conscious and awake, she wasn't even fully aware of what was going on around her anyway. She just had this blurry, constant vision of masked people in white coats bustling around her. Usually, it was pretty quiet and when they did speak, she couldn't make out half the words, but she guessed they might be speaking way more when she was asleep, which she was most of the time.
“Can you hear me?” Teresa spoke to her softly, sitting across from her. Grace did hear her. She was physically unable to respond, her whole body feeling numb like she was still feeling the effects of the aesthetics and drugs that they used on her even though she had been brought here for some time already. She couldn’t tell how long it had been since they put her in this room, on this chair with Teresa. Grace looked terrible. She looked exhausted and sick, a dull grayish complexion on her face. It looked like she was asleep with her eyes open, her cuffed hands stretched out in front of her on the table. If there hadn't been a backrest on her chair, she would have collapsed to the floor without a doubt. Even though she couldn’t react very much, she listened to Teresa.
“There’s a little girl here. Her name is Shai Lun. She’d been infected for three weeks but, Grace… you saved her.”
Although her body remained still, her chest heaving at each weak breath she took, Grace looked up tiredly at Teresa. Hearing this, a glimmer of hope passed through her eyes. If what she was saying was true, maybe her sacrifice would have served some purpose, and saved this little girl. Teresa saw the way she looked at her and gave her a smile, nodding.
“We’ve had her here for observation for weeks now. You saved her. And you can save so many others. Everything we’re doing here, it’s working.” Her smile stretched at the joy that this statement brought her. “Do you understand? That’s why this is so important.”
Hoping that Grace would say something to her made Teresa greatly disappointed when the later just looked down at the table again. She sighed and stood up.
“I just wanted you to know.”
“Teresa.” When she turned her back to her, Grace called her name so softly it almost sounded like a whisper.
“Grace?” She asked as if she thought she had dreamed being called out to. She approached and leaned gently towards her. The girl lifted her head slightly, looking up at Teresa. Grace swallowed harshly, her throat feeling so sore and parted her lips.
“Minho… let me see him… please…” She had to speak directly into Teresa's ear, the sound of her voice being so low. Pronouncing these 6 words had already almost made her breathless. Teresa straightened up and nodded, unable to promise her that this meeting would actually happen. Two guards then came in and grabbed Grace by the arms, lifting her up from the chair and moving her out of the room. Her body hanged from their hand like she was just a rag, and she was brought to a single room which she recognized to be the one she was in before they started actively experimenting on her. The guards put her on the bed, lying on her right side and connected her handcuffs to chains tied to the feet of the bed. The chain was so short she couldn’t even think of rolling over, but she didn’t have the energy to do so anyway. She stared at the window across the wall. She couldn’t see what was going on in the hallways but anyone stopping by could watch her in the room. It was the least of her worries. Grace closed her eyes and she was so tired that despite the bright, white lights on the ceiling, she managed to fall asleep almost instantly.
When she woke up, Grace let out a yawn so big it felt like her jaw was dropping. She winced. Her mouth hurt. She straightened up with difficulty leaning on her forearm to bring her face closer to her hands and touched her mouth with her fingertips. She hissed when she touched actual wounds. Her lips were so dry and irritated that the corners of her mouth were cracked. Maybe that played in why Teresa looked at her with so much concern in her eyes when they met. Or maybe this was just an impression and Teresa didn't care about how awful Grace looked. Her eyes then went down her hands and arms. She knew they had been drawing blood from her for a while now, sticking needles wherever they could but she hadn’t realized how bad it was. There were large, dark blue-purple bruises all over her skin. A squeal escaped her lips, and she felt her body shake. Seeing those bruises covering nearly every square inch of her skin shocked her and she felt her stomach churn. She felt sick and a sudden wave of heat came over her upper body. It was as if she was burning up and she collapsed onto the floor with a grunt, staring at the ceiling, in pain. Her breaths fastened.
From the corner of her eyes, she saw a guard being hurried inside the room to detach the chain from the handcuffs. Seeing these two people come in gave her an idea. She felt something cold being pressed against her shoulder and she quickly felt her body and breathing relax.
“How long did I asleep?” She asked faintly.
“You’ve slept since your meeting with Teresa, this morning. You needed the rest.” The woman gave her a smile and helped her sit at the table against the wall. She showed no resistance and let herself be handled, swiftly stealing her access card from her pocket. Surprisingly, the doctor then told the guard to remove her handcuffs as the girl wasn’t going anywhere in her state. While she had her back turned, Grace let herself fall against the backrest of the chair and slipped the card at her waist, held in place by the elastic of her pants. If she tried to escape from this place, she might need this card to even get out of this room in the first place. The guard took her handcuffs off and remained in the room to watch her while the woman walked to the door. She reached for her card but didn’t find it and she patted her pockets, not understanding where it could have gone. She motioned for the guard to open for her and left. A couple minutes later, someone came in carrying a food tray. It was placed in front of Grace and after she ate, the doctor came back, this time sending the guard on his way so she could check on Grace’s bruises. A kidney plate on the table caught his eye. His arms were outstretched, one on the table the other in the doctor's hands. Grace pushed the tray over the edge of the table, exaggerating the exhaustion she was in to make it seem accidental. Cotton balls rolled on the floor.
“Sorry.” Grace breathed out.
“It’s all right. I’ll take care of it.” The woman turned her back to her and bent over to gather the cotton balls and the other stuff that fell from the tray. Grace had a sudden burst of energy, and she immediately grabbed a syringe from another tray and a small bottle of drugs. She didn't take the time to read the label and just filled the syringe with it before stabbing the needle in the woman lower back. She injected the liquid and watch her body drop to the floor. Grace had no idea if she was really unconscious, but she stood up. Her legs almost gave out beneath her, and she caught herself on the table before straightening up and dropping down beside the woman lying there. She took off her white blouse and shoes. The teenage girl then put all that on and got up, not without much difficulty, leaning on the back of the chair.
“This is useless, you know?” Grace glanced over her shoulders and shrugged, breathing heavily.
“I gotta try.” She said standing at her full height facing the door, trying to hide the colossal amount of effort that it took her not to fall right here and there. She slipped the card into the slot next to the door. It buzzed open and she stepped out in the hallway of the medical wing, where she had spent day after day for the past few months. She had never put so much focus on something as basic as walking but placing one foot in front of the other while standing without any support seemed so hard. She felt her legs shaking and the thought of collapsing in the hallway terrified her, so she forced herself to keep going when she heard the doctor's voice coming from her room. The latter was shouting at a guard to go after her and in the blink of an eye she was pinned down, the guard's knee pressing against her back while he held her bruised arms with a strong grip. Being on the floor was almost relaxing after trying so hard to walk, if it weren't for the pain she was being put through. The fatigue came back in a second and she didn’t even realize when she passed out. She opened and closed her eyes without being able to move a finger and that blurry vision was back. She heard voices around her but the words were confused and sounded deafened and all she could really tell was that she was lying on some sort of bed, in a room she didn't know. Her eyes half open she saw an orange light swirling in the corridors, not knowing what was going on. It was as if not only was her body asleep again, but her mind and senses were also functioning in slow motion. She felt a pressure somewhere on her body, but she was so numb she couldn’t tell where it came from though, she recognized the pressure of a syringe. She slowly realized she was coming out of whatever they had used to sedate her a moment prior when she heard glass breaking sharply on the floor and loud grunting as if there was fight going on. The sounds became clearer as the grunting turned into yelling and she almost fell off the bed when she tried to get up. She felt strong hands catching her in her fall and as she was helped up, she saw Thomas’ face and couldn’t believe it.
“Thomas.” She didn’t care about the pain that continuously shot through her bruised limbs and wrapped her arms around her brother with a sob. Newt and Minho were panting from the effort the fights required, standing there a few feet away from the siblings just reuniting. They joined in the hug after Grace gave them a look when she noticed them in the room. She also gave them each a hug and upon turning back to Thomas, she saw him staring at her arms in shock. Taking a step back, she hit the bed and looked at the three boys. Newt and Minho had also just seen the state in which WICKED had left her and she couldn't help but look away. Seeing what her arms looked like made her sick to her stomach but seeing the guilt in their eyes made her feel even worse. She thought of telling them she was fine, but she couldn’t even resort herself to saying such blatant lies. She felt dizzy and her body was weak, barely able to stand on her own.
“Grace—”
“It’s— I didn’t want them to experiment on you.” She said in one breath, wrapping her arm around her stomach, holding her side. She patted lightly when she felt a bandage under her T-shirt. For a split second she wondered what they had done to her, and she quickly remembered that she had spent most of her last months hooked up to machines, a tube in her stomach to feed her. Not one of them really said anything. All three of them were at an abyssal loss of words. Thomas looked around and grabbed one of the doctors lying dead and lifted the body, grabbing it by the collar to pull off its white coat and put it around Grace's shoulders. She couldn't hide the pain that shot through her arms as she tucked them into the sleeves and closed her eyes so as not to see the way the boys were staring at her.
“Let’s get them out of here.” Thomas glanced at Newt and nodded. He helped Grace to walk out of the room but as they came around the corner of the corridor, a bunch of soldiers spotted them and yelled in their direction. Grace barely had time to realize, she let out a gasp when she was suddenly lifted off the floor and found herself in Thomas's arms as the boys ran in the opposite direction. She clung to Thomas and watched the soldiers chasing them with dread on her tired face. As they fled, she met Janson's gaze and felt her heart skip a beat, holding her breath until he left her field of vision. They were desperately trying to shake off Janson and the soldiers but came to a halt when the latter came from in front of them. Grace ducked her head in Thomas’ neck when they fired in their direction. Minho urged them to get into the room to their right and slammed the door shut and locking it. Janson could be heard grunting as he banged on the door furiously. Thomas took a look around the room while Newt and Minho knocked over a piece of furniture across the door to block it. They backtracked against the large bay window overlooking the rest of the city. Grace stared at the door anxiously, trying to stay calm but with the fatigue and pain she was in, she was kind of all over the place.
“Oh, shit…” Thomas swore as they heard loud steps on the other side of the door. Janson really wanted that door open for the sole reason that he felt so entitled to what was in their blood and the cure that could come out of it. Though she was scared shitless, Grace knew that now that Thomas had her back, WICKED was going to have to keep their claws off her. Grace gulped as she heard a drill whirring. They were trying to saw through the lock on the door to open it.
“Any ideas?” Minho enquired while he and Newt stared at the door, sparks flying inside the room. Grace followed Thomas gaze as he turned to the window and looked down. He showed the pool beneath them and stepped aside, still carrying his sister in his arms while Newt and Minho threw a huge canister at the window, shattering the glass. He put Grace on her feet, holding her firmly by the waist and all four of them stood on the edge, watching the canister fall heavily into the water.
“It’s doable.” Thomas said, glancing at his sister and friend. In other circumstances, Grace would have laughed when she saw Minho’s doubtful face. “Just need a little running start.” Thomas was the first to walk towards the middle of the room, swiftly taking his sister back in his arms since she couldn't run, even for such a short distance. He told her to hold on tight and she clung to him, ignoring the pain that shot through her bruised hands, staring fearfully through the window, taking breaths to try to calm down.
“You sure about this?” Minho asked.
“Not really.” He saw the look on Grace’s face and added; “it’s gonna be okay.”
“Nice pep talk.”
“Yeah, we’re all bloody inspired.” Newt added sarcastically.
The sound of the saw stopped, and Grace turned her head towards the door. There was a silence for a couple of seconds before they started ramming the door. The door banged open, and Janson stepped over the furniture on the floor to get in the room. Thomas swore under his breath and the three boys ran for it and jumped out the window. He shouted, telling Grace to hold her breath but she didn't have time to process what he said and what was happening. She screamed her brother’s name as they fell. She opened her eyes underwater, blinded by this cloud of bubbles and this deaf sound that was her voice. In a matter of less than a second, the nightmares she had of herself drowning came back and she panicked. She was pulled out by Thomas and desperately gasped for air, coughing dryly, and wincing at the sensation of her nose and throat sore from breathing in water. He tightened his grip of her and pushed the hair sticking to her face, reassuring her. She calmed down but had no control over the cough she was seized with. Thomas gave the middle finger to Janson, who was watching them from the windowsill and the group swam to shore. Grace let Thomas pull her with him, out of breath. Only when he put her on the edge of the pool before he even got out of the water, did she realize she was sobbing, panting, coughing and shaking all at once. He pulled Minho and Newt out of the water and helped Grace get on her feet when soldiers ordered them to stay where they were, their machine guns aiming at them. There weren’t many options, so they obliged. While staring at the soldiers, Thomas whispered to Grace to help her calm down. He tried to reach for the handgun at his thigh, but they saw him, advising him not to do that.
“Get on your knees with your hands in the air.” Grace gasped loudly and widened her eyes when one of the soldiers started firing at his peers, stunning them with the electric shots. Once they were all down, he came towards them and took off his mask. Her jaw dropped when she saw Gally standing right in front of them.
“Minho. Grace.” He nodded at them before looking up the building. “You guys are nuts.”
“I’ll explain later.” Thomas then told Minho and his sister, who looked at each other in shock before walking away. Grace heavily relied on her brother’s support to walk along them. She could feel her legs almost giving way with every step. It took so much energy from her; she would have never been able to walk on her own. She barely managed to take deep breaths. Sneaking through the city was really not easy on her. They slid on the ground, hiding from the soldiers looking for them. Thomas sat her down against the grove's half wall, in between him and Gally. She held her arms with a low moan of pain through her teeth. She almost felt even more drained than back there.
“Well, they’re definitely pissed.” Gally declared.
“How far are the tunnels?” Thomas enquired as he took off his soaked gloves, looking at his sister with concern. She was way calmer now, but he could tell she was in a lot of pain, on top of being exhausted.
“Uh, maybe blocks from here.” They all looked ahead of them upon hearing Newt, who was a few feet away, sitting next to Minho, started coughing his lungs out. Grace stared at him, not understanding what was wrong with him at first but when it clicked, her face dropped, and she felt her heart and stomach sank to her feet. It couldn’t be. He couldn’t be infected. They were supposed to be immune to this. Gally looked at the two siblings. “We can make it.”
Thomas didn’t say anything. Him and Gally crouched behind the wall, on the look out but she kept staring at Newt. She had just reunited with her friends, and she was faced with the realization that one of them was dying and that she could save him with all the fucking vaccines or whatever that they made using her, but they needed time to get said cure. She was so focused on the fact that Newt was dying that she completely overlooked the reappearance of Gally. Minho came towards them.
“Hey. How long has he been like this?”
“He’ll be okay. We just gotta get to Brenda.” Thomas said, taking off his jacket. “She’s got the serum. Come on, let’s go.”
Thomas tried to help his sister get up, but she pushed him away, telling him to take care of Newt. Minho and Gally, or either of them, could help her. They watched him catch Newt as he almost fell over and walked away. Until then, she hadn't really cared about the sticky feel of her soaked clothes on her skin, but she suddenly couldn't bare it anymore and leaned forward, moaning from the pain as she tried to pull the blouse off.
“Hey, hey, hey. Take it easy, Grace. Don’t hurt yourself.” Minho hastened to stop her and helped her take off the blouse. Gally's eyes slid down her arms as she fell back against the low wall. Like every single one of them when they saw all the bruises, he couldn’t help but stare in shock, though he tried to control his expression, she could tell in his eyes. He was taken out of his stupor by Minho’s voice. “Why you helping us, Gally? I put a spear through your chest.”
“Yeah. Nobody’s perfect, man.” He shrugged it off and was about to help Grace up but a quick look from Minho was enough to make Gally understand that he got this so the latter just stood up, patting him on the shoulder and walked off.
“Can you stand?” She nodded and he put her arm around his shoulder, holing her by the waist and they just started following Gally and Thomas when she spoke with a faint voice.
“Minho… did they do something to you?”
“They put me through a bunch of simulations, but they only did it a couple of time.”
“Okay. Good…” She nodded, resting her eyes as they walked. She was relieved to hear that Teresa did keep her word and stopped the experiments on him and the others.
“What did you do, Grace?” His question got her to look at him from the corner of her eyes and the silence that followed pushed her to say something. Her brother and Newt were far ahead but not Gally. She knew he would hear but it wasn't that much of a problem. She just didn't want Thomas to know about all this. For now, anyway. On the way, she proceeded to tell him about the day Teresa came to talk to her, trying to get her to cooperate, and she ended up agreeing to do all this and that her only condition to this was for them to leave Minho alone and not use him for any experiments of any kind. She could tell he was upset to hear all this, but the guilt outweighed it. He came out of this safe and sound because she took it all on her. She didn’t have to tell him about how they drew her blood almost every day, leaving her bedridden and in a medically induced coma for a while. She didn’t tell him about the anxiety-inducing nightmares of her drowning or about how sick she gets when she looks at her arms now.
“Anyway… I’ll recover from this.”
“They tortured you—”
“And I agreed to it. It was a shit decision, but it doesn’t matter…” She shook her head, letting out a sigh. “You should go help Thomas with Newt.”
“Grace, you can barely walk on your own.”
“I’ll help her.” Gally turned to them and pushed by Grace, Minho went ahead and put Newt’s arm around his shoulder. She took a step forward and it was enough for her to lose her balance and catch herself on the arm that Gally held out to her. They resumed their walk and stopped in their tracks again, watching an explosion occur further ahead of them. “We’re supposed to take down WICKED, not the whole damn city.”
“Gally, come on.” Thomas urged him to continue on their way and Grace had to wait for him to follow them and looked up at him observing the fire left by the explosion. He didn't seem so thrilled with how far this was going but she didn’t really care. She already had a hard time with Gally back in the Glade and she still wasn’t too fond of him, but he seemed nicer than he used to be. If someone had told her that she would stop hating Gally one day and that he would even go so far as helping her out, she wouldn’t have believed it. When you remember how he ran after her and she taunted him from the top of a tree after she tried out for the Builders during the first week, she would have never thought she would even accept help from him.

SPOILERS FOR THE MAZE RUNNER MOVIES (if applicable)
-
-
-
-
okay so i don't know how many people on here talk about the maze runner but i just rewatched the series and looking back at the plot and all, i think i noticed something i never noticed before.
so janson has thomas to and talk to him in that interview room (and sure he does it with all the new escapees and asks them questions and they made that into a little trailer thing) but i was thinking about. it.
if i remember correctly, in the third movie in a flashback he realizes giving the WICKED compound coordinates and things to the right arm would get him in trouble so he talks to teresa but the guards find them and drag him away.
one of those guards is janson.
i just had the thought that MAYBE janson had thomas talk to him and "ask for his opinion on wicked" could've been a cover to see if he recognized him and he didn't.
honestly it might be a stretch but like that's so interesting to me if that's what he did.
anyway i love those movies despite some issues/plot holes they might have. 😭😭

Second Chance
Gally x Black Female Reader
A/n: I feel like this whole story is a little rushed but it’ll do. I think I did pretty well. As always requests are open and I’d love to hear any feedback from you all.
Masterlist Mega List
The hot water of the shower bouncing off your skin and easing your muscles. The sand that stuck to your sweat washing off easily as the soap washed off your body. Bubbly thoughts clouding your consciousness as you fall into a deep daydream. “Y/n, serious question.” You smiled to him and nod, wanting him to continue. “What do you think of the new greenie?” He looks at you. The starlight, placing a soft glow on his features. “I think he’s confused and brave. Heavy on the confused part though.” He chuckles at you, humming to agree with your words. “Y/n!” You snap out the distant memory. Clearing your throat, you turn off the water and rap the towel around your body. Opening the curtain, you see Teresa and stop in your tracks. Staring into her soul, you push past her and go change. You didn’t have a good feeling about her or this place. Then again good feelings are hard to come by these days. The man that showed you around eyed you differently then the others, maybe you were seeing things but it made something crawl up your spine.
No one else thinks the situation is sketchy but you and you’ll stick by it. Running on the treadmill next to Minho, you looked around for some type of clue to what this place is. It obviously isn’t some kind of sanctuary. The air between you and Minho was kind of awkward but that was because of him. Yeah he did put a spear through your recent ex-boyfriend’s chest but he was infected. What else was he going to do? Talk to him like you tried to do. Looking back on the situation, you often wonder how the others don’t tease you for the ridiculous actions. Trying to talk to an infected, how idiotic of you. You and Minho were going at the same speed, both knowing you can go faster but its kind of hard given nothing is trying to kill you. The blood works was most gruesome for you. It hurt like hell. The others didn’t feel anything but a pinch. Although for you it felt like it was something deeply rooted inside you, as if you had a fear of it before.
Finally, all the tests ceased and you sat with your friends at the lunch table. Poking at the food, you were skeptical. “Y/n, its not poison.” Newt tilts his head in your line of vision and takes a bite of his food. “See.” He says with a mouth of food. Pushing his face away playfully, you crack a little smile. Taking a spoon full, you slowly chew it and swallow. “don’t worry, I know this place is a little off too.” He whispers, reassuring your unspoken speculations. Turning to look at him, you are intrigued on what he will say. “we’ll have to see what happens next.” Nodding to him, you silently agree.
The three dudes in front of you, told you their story of getting rescued. If only that was the case for you. Long useless conversation short, everyone has been here for a matter of days except for the boy in the corner, he’s supposedly been here for a week. Maybe the conversation wasn’t totally useless but it was certainly long. If its a safe haven then why have they just started saving people? It looks like the structure has been up for a long time. These are the questions some of the runners have to ask themselves. It might be the feeling of safety that completely astray’s them from the action but nothing is easily given in this world. Absolutely nothing. The oddest thing here wasn’t the medical team or the dozens of armed men, it was the random calling of people to go to some sort of safe haven. Total crap to you.
Getting assigned to your rooms, you break away from the boys and bunk with some girls. You didn’t know them so you kept to yourself. They offered to take you with them in a plan to escape but you declined, not wanting to leave your fellow runners behind. You wrote this out to them and wished them luck. That night you slept pretty good. Because he was all you could dream about. The way he touched you, kissed you, smiled at you, talked, laughed and loved you. Sometimes you regret what you said to him and you do wonder if he ever felt the same. What you would do to get to say “I love you” to him one last time.
Walking in your designated area to meet up with your friends, visions of him crept into your mind and haunted you. Looking to the side you could have sworn he was there, but then again how could you be so sure? This place is daunting, the secrets it holds that give you the shivers. At this point you could care less what your friends thought of you, mentally you cannot take being here anymore. Your body softly collides with another, in an attempt to stop yourself from crashing into them. You bumped into Janson, the person in charge is what everyone assumes. “Hey, watch where you’re going. Be careful.” You nod to him and he leaves. When you got to the table it seemed like Thomas came to his senses. Preaching to the table about his encounter with Harris last night.
If only you could speak. If only you could find the strength in your trauma infected mind to utter a word. All you could do is watch as Thomas tried to push past a guard. Sometimes you wonder what goes on in his head and by the looks of it Newt wonders too. But all actions are for a reason and later on you find out that it was all for a key card, which played a part in your ground breaking escape. You and Minho were unsurprisingly the only ones who grabbed a bag of supplies before leaving the compound. Luckily you got a gun and two rounds of bullets. Keeping it with you all the way to the right hand. Or what you thought was the right hand. Your face says all as you dangle by your feet. “Don’t give us that look. You came too.” Newt says and you simply roll your eyes.
Performing massive sit ups to grab your ankles. Steadily, you take the knife out your shoe and begin to cut your rope. Only cutting half way. Dropping down gives you momentum, you continue to swing your upper body until your whole body is swinging. Listening to the rope closely, its about to rip off. Putting all your energy into the last two swings, the rope rips off and you grab onto the railing. The blood rushing back into your body, making you slightly dizzy and one of your hands losing its grip. Looking down, your nerves kick in, helping you pull yourself up and release your idiots of a friend group. When Gally told you everyone’s not your friend you didn’t believe him then, but now you see what he means. One organization destroyed, demolished because of one girl. A girl that you didn’t like from the beginning.
You all began to slowly build up the organization once again. Relocating and planning. You were chilling in the corner when they came back from their rescue mission. Creating ruckus as per usual, it did eventually get calmed down. The radio alerted them that WICKED was close, quickly you help turn the lights off and stay still. Turning on the lights, they fix the small argument and you pull Thomas aside. Looking at him you try to find a way to express your thoughts to him in a small amount of words. “Be patient. We have the cure.” You say lowly to him. He looks at everything we helped built and nods. “I’ll try.” He turns to leave but you grab his shoulder giving him a look then letting him go. Rolling your eyes, you go to your quarters. Walking through the open hall, you turn the corner and open your room door. Passing the first bed then collapsing on yours. You huff and lay your whole body on the bed, kicking off your shoes in the process. Getting comfortable on the bed as you relax, you doze off.
“Gally?” You peek your head around the corner where Alby and Gally talked. He hums in response. “Can I talk to you for a moment?” He looks back to Alby and Alby gives him a nod, taking his leave. “Sure, what is it?” He says motioning you to come up to him, trading places with Alby. “I have a bad feeling about her…Teresa.” His brows furrow as he takes in what you’re saying to him. “I-It’s not because she’s a girl, I just have a bad gut feeling about her. But I don’t want to seem weird. I didn’t know who else to tell. Maybe I’m just being paranoid-” He puts his hands on your shoulders instantly calming your hyper nerves. “Calm down.” He says in a firstly manner and you nod. “If you have a feeling, you stick to it. Okay?” You slowly nod and quicken as you become sure of yourself. “I have a bad feeling about her too.” He whispers to you as he looks around making sure no one else is there.
Turning over your eyes continuously flutter open then closed, your mind was fighting with the starry night of reality and the concrete walls of dreadful memory. “Why shouldn’t I run out those gates right now?!” You yell quietly to him, trying not to let the remainder of the glades hear you. “You and I both know that will solve nothing. It’s the greenie’s fault!” You roll your eyes at him. “Greenie this! Greenie that! Did you ever stop and think that maybe we should’ve been trying to escape instead of making a home here? I stayed after I mapped out the maze because you wanted me to. Hell! I even thought about having a family here.” His eyes widen. “What?” You nodded your head and continued. “But here isn’t the place for a family. Here is not the place to raise a child! I for one realize that now. So, you’re either coming with me or I’m leaving you.” His fists clenched at his sides. “You’re leaving me, huh. Leaving me here or in general?” He takes a few steps forward.
“You pick. I’m not being with someone who likes being stuck in a cage.” You look him in the eyes. “Fine.” Your eyebrows scrunch together. “Fine!” Turning to leave, he grabs your shoulder. “Y/n, did you ever love me at all?” You take offense to the question and spin back around. “Did I ever love you? Is that even a question. Yes, I do. Your point?” He shakes his head. “If you loved me, you’d stay. You’d see where I’m coming from and you’d agree.” You roll your eyes. “You are so closed minded, Gally! The least you can do is love me and leave me but no, you have to manipulate me too. I am fed up of this! I wanna see the outside! I’m tired of day in and day out seeing fucking concrete! I know a way out and I’m sticking to it! Now, are you coming or not!?” He lets go of your shoulder. “I’m not coming with you. I’m not going to risk my life with a bunch of idiots like you. And on a hunch at that!”
“You are such a fucking joke! Can’t you just open your eyes for once and see that its not safe here. Please. Gally I don’t want to leave you. I want us to make it out.” You reach for his hand but he slaps it away. “No, y/n! I’m not coming with you. You were talking so big but now look at you so small. A griever will eat that up.” You scoff. “Fuck you!” You slap him in the face. “Right back at you. I’m not gonna stop you. Go get killed for all I care.” That was your breaking point. All those nights when you were scared about dying in the maze meant nothing to him. When he reassured you that nothing would happen to you and if anything he’d jump in the maze to find you, meant nothing. This engulfed your thoughts like wildfire. “I hate you. I hate you! You’re so damn selfish!” You hit him in the chest multiple times, tears unwillingly falling down your cheeks. In the silence, you held on tightly to his shirt as your head hung down. As his hands grabbed onto yours, you released his shirt and pushed him away. You were clearly hurting, your eyes puffy, tears non-stop flowing. You knew what you should’ve said but you refrained from saying it.
Completely waking up, you curl up to hug yourself. “I love you, gally…” You say, nothing above a whisper for only you to hear. Sitting up, you wipe the sweat off your forehead. Brenda stood a few steps from the bed, probably planned on waking you up. “I’m ok.” You hesitate, before she could’ve said anything and she was shocked. You could tell she wanted to console you but you don’t want anyones’ sympathy, it’ll just make you cry. Her eyes go wide as she watched you put on your shoes and leave the room. Sighing as you run your hand through your braids. It was a break of character for sure. You pulled it together for the day ahead. Heading to the wreaked city to get help making your way past the walls to rescue Minho. Somehow, they managed to get you all kidnapped. “Kick the door, you take left and I’ll take the right.” You nod to Winston, adrenaline pumping from the take down of the two guards in the van. Gun in hand, the van comes to a stop and you follow his lead. But he didn’t just kick the door he launched himself at it. Knocking over a man that was opening the door but you still backed him up nonetheless.
You froze when your eyes locked, even with your gun pointed directly at him. The others stepped out the van and their voices muffled in the background. At the same time you both looked away and he defused the debacle. Situating the group and voicing your reasons for being here in the first place, it came time to sleep. Sitting peacefully in Thomas and Newts room, you massage your forehead. “Well? Are you going to talk to him?” You shrug to Thomas. As if on queue someone knocks on the door and you all share a look. Opening the door, Gally stands before you. “Let me talk to you.” You sigh and leave with him. Walking down a hall, you enter his room. Sitting on a chair, he leans on a table next to you. “You’re not going to say anything.” He says quietly. “No reaction? No nothing?” You exaggerate a huff at his questions. “What I said was in the heat of the moment. I didn’t mean it.” That triggered you. “yes…you did.” You hesitate your words but look him in the eyes. “it came from deep down.” You push him in the stomach. “I was afraid. I’m sorry. I didn’t want you to leave, so I needed to say something to keep you even if it scared you. But it did the opposite and I should’ve known better. I regret it.” He kneels down in front of you.
“When I was recovering, all I could think about were the words I said to you last. That’s not how I wanted things to end.” Looking down to him choked you up. Biting back tears, you sobbed finally letting them fall. “I don’t hate you. I’m sorry.” You say between breaths while wiping the tears. “I know. Its my fault, you were right.” He lifts you out the chair to hug you. Shoving your head into his chest, you return the hug. “w-when I saw you…with the spear in your chest I felt, so sick. I felt like I couldn’t breathe.” You get the words out that you’ve been holding in for so long. Pondering the 3 words in the back of your head that you know you should say as you look up to him. “I love y-“ Its crazy how you both were thinking the same thing, talking over each other accidentally. “I love you, Gally.” You exclaim, wholeheartedly. Opening his mouth to respond, he closes them and closes his eyes. You watched as he leaned down, kissing you. Parting his lips slightly for a sweet lip-lock. “I love you too, y/n.” He utters against your lips. “I won’t leave you ever again. No more fighting, we’ll work things out.” You squeeze onto him tighter. “Your hunch, was it right?” He leans to the side to see your face. “Hunch? Teresa.” You show visual distaste. “yeah, it was right.” You sigh, your words coming back to you slowly.
Sitting you down with him on the chair, Gally asks more questions. “How come you stopped talking? If you want to tell me.” You smile to his words. “every time I tried to speak after I saw you I felt so sick. so I stopped. In my mind I was feeling responsible and guilty for that.” You sigh, rubbing your hands together and a tear unknowingly running down your cheek. Wiping the tear away for you, he speaks. “Can I tell you something?” You nod, adjusting yourself in his lap. “I went into the maze because I chose to, don’t feel guilty because of what I decided to do. Y/n, I want to leave the maze behind. We’re out and you’re okay, that’s what matters to me.” You hum, agreeing. “I’d like to leave it behind too.” You went through with the mission to save Minho. Mission accomplished including mass destruction but you counted it as karma so it doesn’t matter. The plan to the island worked, enough people gathered and the boat was ready. Gally had a spot on the island with you and everyone knew it. A lifetime of suffering finally put to an end. Now all that was left to do was live.
“where should I put these?” You ask Gally as you enter your cozy living space. He was looking over a few things outside the home. “On the bed is fine, it’ll be cold tonight.” Doing as told, you set them down and climb into bed, already in your pajamas. “Do you think that here is a good place to raise a kid?” He watched as your eyes went wide before he turned off the light. You both recently started having sex again, you couldn’t pin point where it came from. It hit you as he laid next to you, what you said to him all that time ago. “Yes it is. Why? Are you trying to impregnate me?” You put a little teasing in your tone. “Not unless you want me too.” He rubs on your stomach and flips you over to spoon you. “Give it 2 years, when everything is settled and set in stone.” You tell him and he kisses your cheek, smiling into it. “2 years and I’ll get my baby.” You chuckle at him. Your eyes growing heavy and your body relaxed as you fall asleep. Two years passed by so fast and that was the intention. All the construction for the housing finally finished and other buildings were almost done. What better time to start parenthood than now. You were going to tell Gally but you‘re sure he’s been counting down the days since you told him.
“Its been two years.” He says, looking over all the things built as you sit together on your porch. “I realized.” You fight a laugh, knowing where this’ll lead. “The house is done and we have a second room.” He turns to you. “Yes, we can try for a baby.” You make good with your promise, giving him confirmation with what he’s been egging at. He smiles from ear to ear, a rare sight even for you. Bringing you inside, he locks the door and closes the curtains for ultimate privacy. “So, how do you want to do this? Make love?” The corner of your lip curves at his eagerness. “I don’t want to fuck to make a kid. I mean we can but not for the first time we try. Show me why you love me.” As you spoke, he was coming towards you and on instinct you backed up. Inevitably hitting a wall. “I can do that. No problem.”

Chapter 42
In Which All Signs Point To The Way Out
Trigger warnings: Mourning
Adne found herself running with Minho. For the first time since she became a Runner, the two of them kept relatively quiet throughout the day. They both had their eyes flicking this way and that, hoping for any clues or signs that might help them.
Signs…
She slowed to a trot, eyes catching the World In Catastrophe Killzone Experiment Department plaque. There was something about it, although she couldn’t quite place what it was. Her ears and brain were practically buzzing when she looked at it.
“Adne?” Minho said, circling back to her. “All good there?”
“Yeah,” she said, eyes never leaving the plaque. “Hey, can I see the map you’re doing?”
“Uh, sure.” He reluctantly handed it over to her. “What — what are you doing?”
She took her pencil out and marked where the plaque was on the paper.
“I’m not sure yet. But there’s something… I don’t know.” She handed it back to him, tucking her pencil back into her pack. “Just a thought. I could be completely wrong on this, though.”

Ok DTC is a good movie! Worth waiting 4 years for to watch it from a broadcasting!
I get why Dylan wanted to complete the movie so bad. I'm proud he managed to do it, after that horrific accident he had.
The story was good. Just wish Janson's bite was hinted at earlier, like Newt. Instead of using it as leverage for the vaccin
Minho getting tortured was horrific to watch, as Newt's slow decent of health, becoming a crank & then dying
Gally's character arc was phenomenal. I've enjoyed Will Poulter's acting for years & this movie proved it again 👏🏽

Trust is Like Fire - TMR REWRITE Chapter Nine
[TMR REWRITE-MASTERLIST]
Previous Chapter / Next Chapter
Summary: Driving through the mountains, they found the Right Arm, or rather, the Right Arm found them. For a first interaction, being shot at wasn’t the worst the group had had to face. Aris was reunited with old friends he made when he was in the maze, Sonya and Harriet. The two took them to a camp further in the desert, where their group was hiding. Starting off the wrong foot, they managed to gain the trust of the man in charge, named Vince but as the night fell, the day took a much darker twist, ending in the cries and tears of a family being torn apart.
Words: 7k
Warnings: TMR Scorch Trials spoilers, angst, some fluff, bruises, blood, gun violence, ANGST (I understand Teresa thought she was doing the right thing but only Teresa’s slander will be accepted here)
They had been sitting in this car they took from Marcus, going as far as making him cry like a baby because of it, for a few hours now. The roads were empty and all they saw for miles on end was desert with sands, stones and dry bushes. Jorge was behind the wheel and drove them into the mountains where they would normally find people from the Right Arm group. After taking a nap for a while, her head resting on her brother's shoulder, Grace sat up and rubbed her eyes and met the amused glance Newt was giving her before looking out the window, staring into the distance. Despite the conditions, this had been one of the most restful sleeps she had since the WICKED facility. Just like in the glade, they had been through a lot in a rather short period of time, and it was exhausting for all of them but they all knew WICKED was never going to let it and leave them alone so it wouldn’t come to an end for now. It would be a long time before they would experience a moment of peace longer than a few hours. They drove through the mountains, crossing paths with rusty and crumbling metal pyramid towers from which cables hung from all sides in the void. Grace had no idea what it was. After a moment, Jorge stopped the car and she turned her head, looking forward with a slight frown, wondering what was up. They all stepped out of Bertha, staring at a bunch of decrepit cars blocking the road.
“Well, I guess we’re on foot.” Jorge stated. The group gathered around him and stood there in silence. They walked through what felt like a cemetery, searching the opened trunks, taking a peep inside the cars. Grace followed Thomas, looking around the mountains, she almost bumped into him when he stopped by a car. She walked past him to stand by his side and followed his gaze to the dusty windshield and saw a bullet hole. The second after he brought his hand up to it, a shot was fired and a bullet hit the hood of the car, making a loud metallic sound resounding in the valley. Thomas grabbed Grace’s shoulders and brought her to the ground along with him as he shielded his head with his arm out of reflex. As bullets rained down on them, Jorge ordered the others to take cover. For a few seconds after they stoppes, the shots echoed through the valley like thunder.
“Hey, is everyone okay out there?” Thomas enquired, while he, Grace and Jorge, hid together behind a car.
“We’re fine.” Teresa shouted in response.
“Anyone knows where those bloody shots came from?” Newt queried, but none of them had an answer.
“That son of a bitch, Marcus. He led us into an ambush.” Jorge spoke, furiously taking off his gloves. Grace then looked at Thomas motioned for her to stay hidden as he slowly stood up to look around. A few other bullets were shot at their car, and he took cover again.
“What do we do?” He asked Jorge. Both Grace and Thomas stared at him, waiting for him to say something.
“Yeah. Hold this.” Jorge handed them a sort of bomb and Grace hesitantly grabbed it, glancing at her brother in confusion. “We gotta create a diversion. You get ready to chuck it.” Jorge then then took out a device with a small red button on top and she got on her foot, leaning forward to stay hidden, the bomb in her hand while Jorge told the others to be ready to run back to the truck and cover their ears. He then lowered his voice to address Grace. “Ready? One… Two…”
“Drop it.” A female voice ordered from behind them, accompanied by the sound of a gun being reloaded. They froze for a few seconds until the woman urged them and raising her hands in the air, Grace put the bomb down, not daring to turn around, just looking at her brother from the corner of her eyes. Jorge gave in as well and dropped the device he held in his hand. “On your feet. Let’s go.” All three of them slowly got up and she repeated herself, yelling this time. With her sniper, she moved for them to get to the side. There were actually two women in front of them, both wearing masks hiding their lower faces. The one actively threatening them had long dreadlocks falling a little past her shoulders and the other one, standing behind her, light blond hair in a side braid. The two walked towards them, pushing them to back up and got the others to raise their hands and stand beside Thomas, Grace and Jorge. The one with dreadlocks kind of frowned, lowering her gun and mask. “Aris?”
“Oh my god. Harriet?”
“My god. What the hell are you doing here?” She quickly swalked over to him and drew him into a tight hug. The others watched them, all staring and frowning in confusion. Aris then greeted the other girl named Sonya. They seemed so relieved to see each other. Grace looked at the blond, and the only thought that crossed her mind was how pretty she looked.
“Aris, you’re lucky we didn’t shoot your dumb ass. You all right man?”
“Uh, what’s happening?” Minho enquired.
“We were in the maze together.” Aris explained, reminding them that he was indeed in a maze full of girls and was the only boy, just like Teresa and Grace were the only girls in a maze full of boys. For some reason the three of them had found themselves in the opposite maze to the one they should have been in. Harriet then walked to the edge of the road and whistled. Grace followed her with her eyes until she looked at Sonya and crossed her gaze. she still had a candid smile stretching her rosy lips. She had the prettiest hazel eyes Grace had ever seen and she couldn’t get her eyes off of her. It felt like there had been an instant connection between them, as if time had stopped and nothing else mattered around them. Grace was very unfamiliar with that sort of feeling and didn’t know what to do with it but stand there and smile and probably look somewhat stupid, but she didn’t care. The fluttering in her stomach made it feel like thousands of butterflies were flying in there and she couldn't help but be confused and taken aback and yet, looking at Sonya was strangely comforting. She didn't remember her being at WICKED with them and still, it was just as if they had always known each other, which was even more weird to her. When she felt Thomas’ hand on her shoulder, she was taken out of her thoughts and contemplation in the blink of an eye and glanced at her brother, disoriented. Thomas was looking at her and she could tell that his eyes were asking her what was going on, but she just turned around and saw all the armed figures standing on top of the mountains. They had definitely found the Right Arm. Grace had a soft grin on her face. She glanced at Sonya, who was talking to Aris and the latter looked at her, both smiling at each other. Grace couldn’t understand what happened and why she was feeling like this toward someone she had just met a moment before. She wondered if Sonya was feeling the same as her.
She pushed these thoughts away, putting them to the back of her mind and the group of teenagers followed Sonya and Harriet down a wide, natural tunnel in the moutain. At the end of the tunnel, a big truck was parked sideways to block the path. Sonya waved her arm around.
“Back it up, Joe!” The vehicle began to reverse, and they walked out the gallery. Outside, there was a whole bunch of people, standing near cars parked there. The group silently followed the two girls, Aris on their heel and Thomas and Grace walked side by side, looking around with a tiny hint of apprehension in the back of their eyes, their friends right behind them.
“We’re taking them to base.” Harriet told someone without stopping in her tracks.
“Wait, so, how did you guys get here?” Aris wondered.
“The Right Arm got us out.”
“Wait, wait.” Thomas spoke, accelerating his pace enough to approach Harriet. She caught his attention by talking about the Right Arm. Grace had thought they might have found them after everything they had gone through, but she couldn't be sure, until she said this. Harriet stopped by a car, her hand on the handle and turned toward Thomas. “The Right Arm? Do you know where they are?”
“Hop in.” She gestured with her head for them to get in the car as she opened the door, giving them a slight smile. Thomas remained silent for a second, glancing at the car and he kind of looked at his sister next to him before finally taking the lead and getting in the car. They couldn’t all fit in just this one car, so Grace and Teresa went with Thomas, a soldier behind the wheel and Harriet in the passenger seat, and the others were lead to a second vehicule. Grace let her gaze linger outside when she saw Sonya walk past the window. The latter glanced at her with sweetness in her eyes as she disappeared into another car with Newt, Minho, Aris and Siggy. They drove through desert for a while, but they eventually reached a large camp, with dozens of people walking around. The teenagers were looking at this new place with wide eyes. Sonya and Harriet walked them into the camp. “They’ve been planning this for over a year now. This is all for us.”
“You guys are lucky you found us when you did.” Sonya added. “We’re moving out at first light. Where’s Vince?”
“Somewhere over there, I think.” A man said, pointing in the distance. Sonya and Harriet walked in said direction.
“Who’s Vince?” Thomas asked.
“He’s the one who decides if you get to stay.” Harriet spoke, glancing at Sonya with a smirk.
“I thought the Right Arm was supposed to be an army.” Minho jumped in the conversation and when he had barely finished his sentence, the deep voice of a man rose on their right. That was probably this Vince they heard about.
“Yeah, we were. That is all that’s left of us.” He shrugged, showing around him as he walked towards them. He was a middle-aged man, with dark blond hair with a goatee and a mustache. “Lot of good people died getting us this far. Who are they?”
“They’re immunes.” Harriet replied. “Caught ‘em coming up the mountain.”
“Did you check ‘em?”
“I know this guy, Aris. I trust him” She said, pointing at her friend. Vince was very suspicious of the group of newcomers, staring them all down with his hooded eyes.
“Well, I don’t. Check ‘em.”
“Hey, boss…” Another guy approached them and Grace looked over her shoulder, wondering what he was doing. She didn’t have time to think she unexpectedly caught Brenda in her arms when the latter suddenly fell forward with a raspy gasp. Grace stumbled, almost losing her balance as she crouched down, frowning in worry and confusion. Jorge rushed towards her and Grace gently dropped her on the ground, stepping aside, helped up by Thomas. None of them knew what to do while Jorge tried calling out to Brenda, holding her in his arms. She had a sick complexion, and her lips were almost black. Grace wondered how none of them had noticed that before because it couldn't have happened all of a sudden. Vince crouched next to Jorge, a hand on his shoulder.
“What’s going on with her?”
“I don’t know. Brenda, are you all right? Brenda?” While Jorge was focused on her, Grace watched Vince as he stared at the bandage on her leg. She watched him pull it down and reveal a nasty crank bite. The veins on her calf were prominent and dark, like Winston when he had been infected. Now that she thought of him, it seemed so obvious that she had been infected. She looked exactly like he did at his worst. Upon seeing the bite, Vince jumped on his feet, swearing under his breath and he pulled out his gun, alerting everyone around that there was a crank in the camp. Thomas almost ran to Vince, shouting along with Jorge to stop Vince from shooting her.
“Listen, okay?” Thomas talked to him, ignoring his order to step back. Two men grabbed Jorge by the arms and dragged him away from Brenda. “Listen, listen. This just happened, okay? She’s not dangerous yet.”
“You shouldn’t have brought her here!”
“I know. I—” He pursed his lips, kind of looking down for a second.
“We let Cranks in here now, the safe haven doesn’t last a week! Step back!”
I understand, okay? I understand.” He tried to speak to Vince as calmly as possible. “All right, just- just liten. Please. Please, okay? I told her that you could help. Okay?” Vince didn’t lower his gun so Thomas kept talking, trying to convince him to let her go. “There’s got to be something you can do.”
“Yeah, there is.” He said, breathing loudly. A silence hung over them until he loaded his weapon. “I can put her out her misery.”
“No!” Jorge yelled, struggling against the two men holding him. Grace stared at the scene anxiously. Before he pulled the trigger, a woman jogged up to them, raising her voice at him.
“Vince, that’s enough! Let him go. Let him go!” Jorge was finally freed by the two Right Arm members. Grace kind of frowned, slowly stepping closer to Thomas as they both stared at the woman. She had no idea who the latter was.
“She’s infected, Doc. There’s nothing we can do for her.”
“No, but they can.” She was staring back at the two siblings with a smile on her face, like she knew them. Grace stood just a little behind her brother and she looked at him in confusion, as if he would have an answer, but he seemed as lost as her, squinting his eyes as he gaped at her. When their names crossed her lips, Grace slowly turned her head towards her, dumbfounded. “Hello, Thomas, Grace.”
“You know us?” Thomas asked.
“Interesting.” Her smile faded and she nodded, looking down at Brenda as she spoke. Vince stared at the two. They weren’t the only ones confused right now. “It makes sense they’d put you in the maze. Though I must admit…”  The doctor went to kneel beside Brenda, holding her wrist. “I was worried they’d kill you after what you did.”
“Wh- What we did?”
She stayed silent for a brief moment, her hand on Brenda’s forehead before looking back at them. “The first time we spoke, you said you couldn’t take it anymore… watching your friends die, one by one. The last time we spoke, you gave me the coordinates of every WICKED compound, trial and lab.”
“They were our source.” Vince said, just realizing something that none of the two siblings even remembered. Thomas and Grace stared at the woman in silence, as if they were holding their breaths, processing what she said. Grace had no idea what he did remember from their time working for WICKED and even though she did vaguely remember something happened, she thought it only involved Thomas and that on her part, for some obscure reason, she had tried to shoot herself in one of the bathrooms of the facility, before Thomas bursted in. She wasn’t even sure if this was something that really happened or if it was actually just some sort of fever dream.
“We couldn’t have pulled all this off without them.” She added softly. Thomas and Grace looked around, shocked and puzzled, and couldn’t hold Vince’s gaze or anyone else’s. They had never felt so lost. The doctor ordered that Brenda be taken into the tent, probably the one that was to be used as the infirmary and bring the teenagers some warm clothes. They might be in a desert, but it wasn't as hot as when they were crossing the dunes a few days ago. Thomas and Grace looked ahead of them, where Teresa was standing and she had a stern face, as if something tragic had happened. She looked away. Grace frowned, wondering if she was upset because the doc just said how they had betrayed WICKED before being sent into the maze. It was just like when she tried telling them they should go back to the facility they had just escaped from. Grace stared at Teresa, feeling something was off with her. “Thomas, Grace, come on. I need to get some blood from you.”
She led them to the tent while some other guys carried Brenda to a bed. Her chest was heaving rapidly as she only took short breaths. The woman put thin tubes in the crook of their elbows, just like they did at the WICKED facility. Grace wondered why their blood seemed so much more valuable than anyone else’s. She also thought that now, she would have bruises on both her arms. Thomas didn’t have any bruises anymore unlike his sister, which led her to believe they didn’t take as much blood from him as they did from her. She couldn’t help but wonder why. It was strange. About a dozen of vials of blood had been taken from her alone and this was still something that troubled her. They were sat by Brenda’s bed, Jorge on the other side, his hand on the girl’s forehead.
“In the beginning, we were lost.” The doctor was walking around the tent, grabbing a few things here and there while blood was being drawn from the two teenagers. “All we knew for sure… was that the younger you were, the stronger your chances.”
“You worked for WICKED?” Thomas enquired quietly. She stopped what she was doing for a second and nodded.
“Long time ago.” Thomas and Grace glanced at Jorge, who also had worked for WICKED a long time ago. They turned their heads back to her when she continued to talk, busying herselfs with various vials and liquids, including their blood. “You know, at first, we had the best intentions. Find a cure, save the world. It was clear you kids were the key, because you were immune. But why? Eventually, we found an answer. An enzyme produced by the brains of the immune. Once separated from the bloodstream… It can serve as a powerful agent to slow the spread of the virus.”
“So, you found a cure?” Thomas and Grace glanced at each other. She remained silent, letting her brother speak because she had no idea what to say and wasn’t sure if it would be relevant to talk about how much blood WICKED took from her, without telling her why.
“Not exactly.” She shook her head, dashing their thin hopes with these two words. “The enzyme can’t be manufactured, only harvested from the immune. The young.” Grace stared into space, listening. “Of course, that didn’t stop WICKED. If they had their way… they’d sacrifice an entire generation. All for this. A gift of biology. Of evolution. But not meant for all of us.” She sat next to Jorge and carefully pricked Brenda with the syringe. As the liquid ran through her veins, she let out a long sigh and her breathing calmed down. Just a few seconds after the injection, she already seemed more peaceful. Thomas and Grace watched her face relax.
“How long will that give her?” He asked.
“It’s different for everyone. A few months maybe. But that’s the catch, isn’t it? She’ll always need more.” She stood up, leading Jorge outside to let them all rest. Jorge parted his lips to say something but the doctor spoke, assuring him Brenda would be fine and he reluctantly left the tent. The doctor put her gloves in a bin. “Thomas? You know she can’t come with us, right?” And on these words, as she didn’t receive any answer from him, she left. She was a really nice person. Grace looked down at the little dressing on her left arm and the fading bruises on her right. Now that they were alone, she wanted to express her thoughts.
“Thomas…” At the mention of her name, he turned his head towards her. “what if some of us were like, more immune? That this enzyme produced by our brains was more… I don’t know, effective in some? And therefore, more interesting for WICKED… it would explain why they wanted so much blood from me. From us.” Despair quickly tainted her voice. “If what's in our blood has so much worth to them, they wouldn't hesitate to sacrifice us. We saw what they did to the others.”
“They won’t get to us, okay? We’re safe here, with the Right Arm... I won’t let them take any of us. I won’t let them take you.” She looked up at him and he drew her into a tight hug. They eventually broke their embrace after holding each other for a minute and stood up, putting on their jackets before heading out. Grace took a step towards the entrance of the tent, and turned around when she didn’t hear her brother follow her. She watched him grab something next to Brenda, on the bed and approached. First thinking it might be some old lighter, it actually had a picture inside of it. Brenda’s voice caught their attention. They hadn’t realized she had woken up.
“He was my brother.”
“Hey. Sorry.” He gave it back to her, sitting down. Grace followed his lead and sat beside him. “Are you okay? How are you feeling?”
“You remind me of him.” She said to Thomas, staring at the little object. “He always saw the best in people.”
“Where is he now?” Grace asked quietly. Brenda turned on her side, resting her head on her arm and she shook her head.
“I don’t know. When we were kids… we were taken in by one of WICKED’s camps. They gave us a bunch of tests. They didn’t want me. They wanted him, though. They didn’t even let me say goodbye.” As she spoke, Grace was reminded of that faint memory of their mother cuddling them before they were taken away by WICKED. They barely had time to say goodbye to her and didn’t even remember her name.
“What was his name?” Thomas asked.
“George.” She replied with a smile. He pulled out the little figurine made by Chuck and showed it to Brenda.
“That was Chuck.”
“How did he die?” She asked softly after observing the statuette. There was a brief silence.
“Saving my life.” Grace looked down at her feet, fidgeting with her fingers. She lifted her head up when she felt him put a hand on her shoulder as he stood up. She got up in turn while he told Brenda to get some rest. Staring at the dry desert floor, Grace exited the tent after Thomas. She needed to get some fresh air. Jorge was standing right outside the tent. She looked up after almost bumping into her brother when he stopped in his tracks. Both Thomas and Grace rose their eyebrows in surprise when Jorge wrapped his arms around Thomas and then Grace, calling them “brother” and “sister” in Spanish. This wasn’t something they expected from Jorge, but he was very grateful for their help to save Brenda.
“If anything were to happen to her, I--”
“I know, I know.” Thomas patted him on the shoulder. He nodded toward the inside of the tent with his head, encouraging him to go see her now that she was awake.
“I guess I owe you, now.” He told them before entering the tent, sketching a friendly smile. The two siblings glanced at each other and stepped away. As they walked through the camp to go find their friends, Harriet and Sonya were chatting and laughing with their old pal, Aris. They found Minho, Newt and Siggy on top of a small cliff. They sat near them. Teresa was nowhere to be seen.
“I wish Alby could’ve seen all this.” Thomas declared. They all nodded at his statement.
“And Winston.” Siggy added.
“And Chuck.” He looked at the figurine in his hands.
“He’d be proud of you, you know, Tommy.” Newt told him. Siggy shouted at Aris, calling out to him and he waved at them.
“Hey Guys!” Grace looked at Sonya and knew she was looking back at her when she reacted to her waving. Harriet seemingly saw the interaction and turned her head to her friend, nudging her lightly. Grace then looked around and could see that the four boys, at least Minho, Newt and Thomas seemed to have noticed, and were looking at her with an amused smile as she was clearly trying to hide her infatuation for Sonya. They could tell the two girls liked each other already but none of them said anything about it.
“I kinda like that kid.” Siggy said, smiling but he got confused when he saw the amusement on their faces. “Why are y’all laughing?”
“Nothing.” Newt shrugged it off with a smirk and Minho changed the subject of conversation.
“Yeah. I still don’t trust him, though.” The five of them chuckled.
“Hey, where’s Teresa?” Thomas then enquired. It got Grace looking around, seeing she was still no where near them. She would usually stick with them, especially in such foreign environment where she didn't know anyone but she was somewhere on her own. Newt quickly gave them an answer, showing the cliff behind them.
“She went up there.” In the distance, they saw Teresa's silhouette standing out against the sky, the bottom of her coat floating in the breeze. Grace frowned, wondering what was up with her and it reminded her of the moment the doctor recognized them and said outloud how they apparently betrayed WICKED. Back there, Teresa seemed somewhat disappointed and upset but held it together. Thomas stood up and went to join Teresa up on the cliff.
Daylight fading as night drew near, Grace stared into space, overwhelming herself with doubts and questions about Teresa strange behavior. She had never been as close to her as Thomas was so she couldn’t be sure what was going through her head at the moment. Grace sighed silently and gathering her hair over her shoulder with her hand, she lay down looking at the sky, placing her arm under her head. She ended up closing her eyes, letting her mind wander in her memory, reviewing more or less clear memories. She could hear the engines of WICKED aircrafts in the distance, as if they were really there but when she opened her eyes, the noises didn't go away and she stood up, glancing at the boys nearby and they all looked around, soon seeing the lights of said WICKED aircrafts and she widened her eyes. WICKED found them, after all their efforts to escape from the organization, they had been found. She couldn't believe it but... of course, Teresa was behind this. It made no doubt. She wanted them all to go back to WICKED and clearly said it to Thomas and Grace back in the desert, they should have known she would do something like this. The moments that were to follow were perhaps going to be a screaming bloodbath because of her delusion.
They barely had time to stand up. A helicopter launched a missile at the camp. They were thrown backwards by the force of the explosion below and Grace groaned as she fell on a rock. More bombs were dropped on them. Newt was the closest to her and he helped her up. Grace asked where her brother was since he was yet to return but the situation was escalating quickly and none of them knew where he was nor had the time to find out so they ran with Minho and Siggy, not knowing where to go as the camp was surrounded by WICKED soldiers. They were shooting on sight, immobilizing anyone who fled with the electric projectiles fired by their large guns. The four teenagers crouched behind metal barrels, jumping when another explosion sounded. Not far, they saw Vince and Harriet near a truck. He shouted for her to bring more ammunition as he fired relentlessly at the soldiers.
“Vince! Harriet!” Minho called out to them, and they rushed to the two Right Arm members. He talked to them, yelling to be heard. “How can we help?”
“You need to cover us!” Harriet stated.
“Hey! Do you know how to use this thing?” Vince handed his rifle to Minho as the latter nodded while he hurriedly loaded the submachine gun in the back of the pickup. Siggy and Grace helped Harriet, quickly grabbing a couple of smaller guns and Newt was given a sniper. Grace wasn’t exactly the most comfortable holding a gun but she tried to stay calm, only firing when she was sure she wouldn’t hit an ally. A bullet flew out of her weapon and a soldier lost his balance and fell down with a groan. She widened her eyes, staring at the body, taking quick breaths. It wasn’t the first time she saw someone die, but it was the first time she killed.  She quickly pulled herself together and continued to cover Vince. Newt, Minho, Harriet and Siggy by her sides, shooting with more ease than her but she was getting the hang of it.
“Vince, hurry up! There’s too many of them.” Newt exclaimed in an alarming tone. Not long after Siggy told them he was out of ammunition, Grace heard her own gun click and she realized she didn't have any bullets left either. Next thing she knew, she heard a clicking sound in the truck and Vince swearing. She had no time to process what was happening and fell to her knees. For a few seconds an intense pain shot through her body which suddenly stiffened and she crashed on the ground, unable to think, speak or move at all, just staring into space, feeling like she was paralyzed and couldn’t take deep breaths. Her lips quivered a bit as she tried to say her brother’s name, but no sound came out of her mouth. She felt someone grabbing her by the armpits and lifting her up but she was like a dead weight, her limbs hanging heavily and could do nothing but blankly watch as the soldiers tied her and her friends up. She kept trying to say her brother’s name, as if it was going to make him appear nearby to save them, but the sound she made was more like a gasp like when you're out of breath after running. By the time she could feel her limbs again, she was completely restrained, on her knees, lined up with the other members of the Right Arm but her and her friends were in the first row of the group of captives. It was the worst possible scenario. All their efforts to escape from WICKED had been ruined because of Teresa.
“How many did we get?” Grace lifted her head up upon hearing Janson’s voice. Strands of hair in her face, she stared at him.
“All of them. Give or take.” A soldier told him.
“Give or take what?”
“Well, they lost a few.” While they spoke, another soldier was passing behind the teenagers, scanning the tracking tags put by WICKED on the back of their neck. Grace frowned as the guard pushed her hair out of the way.
“B-2.” He stated before moving on to the next. Grace wouldn’t take her eyes off of Janson, an angry glower on her face. He looked around.
“Where’s Thomas? Where’s your brother?” He enquired, leaning down to grab her face, almost spitting his question through his gritted teeth. He held her face so hard it was as if he was trying to break her jaw.
“Right here.” When his voice rose in the background, Janson suddenly let go of her, immidietaly turning around to look where the voice was coming from. And there he was. Grace was relieved to see him but at the same time, her concern for him grew. She mumbled his name inaudibly. Soldiers surrounded him and one pushed him bluntly in Janson's direction. He had a smirk on his face.
“Thomas.” He punched him hard in the stomach and ordered a guard to line him up with the others. At the moment of the blow, Grace protested, trying to get up but was pushed back down by a guard. She watched her brother as he was forced to his knees right next to her. He straightened up and exchanged a look of mixed concern and relief with her. She would have taken him in her arms if they weren’t tied up. Janson approached a man nearby. “Okay. Bring her in.”
“Why didn’t you run?” Minho asked Thomas quietly. The latter sighed, shaking his head.
“I’m tired of running.” It was definitely not the only reason, and she was aware of it because she knew him. He came back for his friends and sister. He couldn’t leave them behind and that warmed her heart in this tragic turn of events. A large aircraft flew out of the clouds and over their heads, blinding them with its headlights kicking up dust and sand as it landed, making them squint their eyes. Four guards walked out, the Dr. Paige right behind them.
“Is this all of them?” She walked up to Janson.
“Most of them. It’ll be enough.” He assured.
“Start loading them in.”
“Yes, ma’am. Okay, you heard. Let’s go! Get ‘em on!” On his command, soldiers started picking up people and leading them to the engine, straight up dragging the most reluctant ones. The woman stepped toward the teenagers and waved at a soldier to bring Thomas and Grace. They were forced up and pushed towards her.
“Hello, Thomas. Hello, Grace.” She greeted them with an oddly sweet voice and they just stared at her, dumbfounded to see her alive after they literally saw a recording of her shoot her brains out. Even though, after all the shit WICKED pulled on them, another lie wasn’t so surprising. Accompanied by a soldier, Teresa appeared in their sight. Paige glanced at her. “I’m glad your safe.”
“What the hell?” Minho exclaimed.
“Wait, what’s going on?” Newt was understandably confused.
“She’s with them.” Thomas stated bitterly. Everyone either looked at Thomas, shocked by the news, or stared directly at Teresa. Janson approached.
“Teresa’s always had an evolved appreciation of the greater good. Once we restored her memories, it was only a matter of time.”
“I’m sorry.” She said, looking at her peers. “I had no choice. This is the only way. We have to find a cure.”
“She’s right. This is all a mean to an end.” Paige added. “You used to understand that, Thomas. You too, Grace. No matter what you think of me… I am not a monster. I’m a doctor. I swore an oath to find a cure! No matter the cost.” They all remained silent at her explanation. Teresa sided with WICKED when they didn’t care about any of them. They were just necessary sacrifice for their own survival. “I just need more time.”
“More blood.” The voice of the woman that told Thomas and Grace about their betrayal of WICKED rose behind them.
“Hello, Mary. I hoped we’d meet again. I’m sorry it had to be under these circumstances.”
“I’m sorry about a lot of things too. But not this. At least my conscience is clear.”
“So is mine.” Paige replied quietly. Thomas and Grace jumped at the sharp sound of a bullet being shot. He grabbed his sister by the arm instinctively. Blood soaked Mary’s shirt as she slowly looked down at her stomach and collapsed. Vince shouted her name, struggling against the soldiers and he rushed towards her. Grace followed Thomas’ gaze and saw Janson, holding a gun in the direction of the doctor. Thomas tightened his grip over Grace’s arm, keeping her as close to him as possible and stared at Teresa in shock.
“Come on, Janson. Load them up.” Paige turned around, walking back to the aircraft. Teresa only seemed to realize the gravity of the situation now. “All these people. Get rid of them. Let’s go. Let’s go!”
Moving his hand from holding his arm to resting on her shoulder, she saw him discreetly slip his free hand inside his jacket while a soldier started pushing the two siblings towards the aircraft. He pulled out whatever he was reaching for, and Grace stepped away when he turned around and violently struck the soldier with his elbow, knocking him down. What he held in his hands was actually Jorge’s small bomb and detonator and he erratically shouted to everyone to stand back, catching Janson and Paige’s attention. The soldiers held their guns at Thomas and Janson ran towards them, raising his hands.
“Hold your fire!” For a moment, they yelled back and forth, their voices overlapping, making it hard to understand what they were saying.
“Stand back. Let ‘em go.” Thomas requested, pointing at the aircraft with his hand holding the detonator.
“Thomas, put it down.”
“Let ‘em all go!” He shouted again.
“You know I can’t do that.” Paige joined in, raising her voice.
“Thomas, please stop.” Teresa begged. “I made a deal with them. They promised we’d be safe. All of us.”
“And I’m supposed to trust you now?” His voice quivered slightly. Grace could hear the hurt, even though he wasn’t speaking loudly.
“It’s true. It was her only condition.” Paige assured.
“Shut up!”
“Everything can go back to the way it was. Thomas… do you really want all of them to die?”
“Listen to her, Thomas. Think about what you’re doing.” Janson said, getting annoyed at the teenager’s relentlessness. Grace glanced at Minho, Newt and Siggy and they slowly walked over to Thomas, standing around him.
“We’re with you, Thomas.” Newt declared. Paige and Teresa shook their head, telling him not to do it. But it didn’t matter to them, his friends would stick with him until the end.
“Do it, Thomas.” Minho encouraged. Thomas looked at Dr. Paige.
“We’re not going back there.” He held up the bomb in front of him, his thumb hovering over the button on top. “It’s the only way.”
They all closed their eyes as he was about to detonate the bomb. Paige yelled his name when suddenly, the loud horn of a vehicle sounded nearby. They turned their heads towards the car speeding through the camp, not knowing what was going on. Soldiers tried firing at the vehicle, but it was useless. Whoever was driving drove into a helicopter. The engine fell to the side, its blades spinning rapidly and hitting the ground, suddenly coming loose and breaking into sharp pieces that flew all over the place. Thomas threw himself to the ground to avoid getting hit. Everyone started running in all directions, screaming, shouting at each other. It turned into complete chaos in seconds.
“You good?” He asked his friends and sister, standing nearby.
“Freeze! Drop it, kid!” A soldier ordered Thomas to let go off the bomb but he glanced down at it, detonating it and throwing it at him and his colleagues. He turned around to the others, yelling at them to run and get down. They managed to get away a bit and shielded their faces with their arms when a blinding explotion blew the area up. Grace crawled to the side and stood up, looking around in panick. There were thick clouds of dust that had been kicked up and she didn't know where her brother or even her friends had gone. She heard shots being fired and gruntings but before she could determine where the sounds came from, she saw Vince jump in the back of the pick-up and shoot into the crowd of soldiers with the submachine gun. She ran into her brother, and they found the others, trying to flee from the soldiers who were getting dangerously close to them.
Minho picked up a gun on the ground, yelling at them to go, firing at the soldiers. As Grace was just running past him, Minho ran out of ammunition and got shot at by one of their electric guns. She stepped away, glancing over her shoulder, hearing her brother calling out to his friend. She turned around, about to keep running to join Thomas, Newt and Siggy when suddenly, she felt this sharp pain in her back, her body stiffening up before it was shaken with tremors. Thomas screamed at the top of his lungs, crying out her name but it was too late for them to save Minho and Grace. She tried to crawl away, but her limbs were rigid and it was such strenuous effort for nothing, she sighed and watched her brother try to run to them, yelling their names as they were picked up and dragged away by soldiers. Grace felt a tear roll down her cheek as she tried to call out for her brother but just like the first time they were stunned, no sound would come out of her mouth. She was paralyzed and every effort to move even just her arm or hand was so straining that she found herself staring blankly at her brother and friends in the distance, feeling the heels of her shoes dig lines into the sand as they passed. Thomas was trying to run in their direction, calling out for them, his voice breaking as he screamed his sister's name for the umpteenth time. Jorge grabbed him to stop him from running into the wolf's mouth in a desperate attempt to save them. He pulled him away as they ran but he struggled against him. She knew he must have felt guilty to have to watch two people he cared about being taken away, especially after telling Grace he wouldn't let WICKED take them away, and now this happened.
To Minho, and his sister, nonetheless.
