Gideon The Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (Sci-Fi)

The Emperor of the Nine Houses has invited the necromantic heirs of each house to participate in a test to join him in immortality. Every necromancer needs a cavalier, however, and the only way Gideon Nav will earn her freedom from the Ninth House is to pick up a sword.

I want to say more about GtN SO BAD but I can’t because spoilers. This book quite literally fundamentally changed me, I think about it at least once a week. This was the book that got me back into reading more consistently so take that as you will.

A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder by Holly Jackson (True Crime)

Five years ago, Andie Bell was murdered by her boyfriend Sal Singh, and everyone knows it. At least, everyone thinks they know it. When Pippa Fitz-Amobi decides to investigate the case as part of her senior project, she begins to unravel dark secrets that will change the case- and her life- forever.

Another one of of my absolute favorite books and favorite series that I will always recommend. I really love how AGGGTM dives into the collective obsession with true crime and how it actually affects people who are involved.

Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao (Sci-Fi)

Being a Chrysalis pilot in Huaxia is a boy’s dream and a girl’s death sentence. But when Wu Zetian kills the pilot responsible for her sister’s death through the Chrysalis’ mental link, she is labeled an Iron Widow and paired up with the strongest yet most controversial male pilot to tame her. She will not give up her power so easily though.

I was excited for this book and it more than exceeded my expectations. I love Zetian as a character, and the worldbuilding is excellent. I won’t lie when I say I’m foaming at the mouth for Heavenly Tyrant.

Six Of Crows by Leigh Bardugo (Fantasy)

Kaz Brekker has the chance to pull off the heist of a lifetime that will make him rich beyond anyone’s wildest dreams, but he can’t do it alone. He must gather a crew of Ketterdam’s most talented to succeed- as long as they don’t kill each other first.

The crows!!!! I love them!!!! I liked the grisha trilogy set in the same world, but I loved the crows duology SO much more. All of the characters are fantastic but Kaz and Inej will always have my heart.

We Are Watching Eliza Bright by A.E. Osworth (Thriller)

Eliza Bright is living her dream as a coder at Fancy Dog Games. When a workplace harassment incident goes unresolved, Eliza takes her story to a journalist to bring light to her situation. Unfortunately, this also makes Eliza a target for the violent collective of male video game players, who threaten her life not only online, but in real life.

I am not normally one to read straight up thrillers, but this one was disturbing yet fascinating enough that I read it all in one day. While it is a fictionalized dramatization of Gamergate, what Eliza faces can feel all too real to someone who knows how game fans can be.

Warcross by Marie Lu (Sci-Fi)

Teenage hacker Emika Chen, desperate for cash, takes a chance and hacks into the international Warcross Championships, accidentally glitching herself into the action and becoming a sensation. When Warcross’ creator offers her an official place in this year’s championship to uncover a security issue, she uncovers a sinister plot that could bring Warcross as the world knows it to its knees.

I’ve read quite a few of Marie Lu’s books, but the Warcross duology was SO GOOD. Another book with stunning worldbuilding that also doesn’t feel so far off from our current technology, I’d highly recommend to anyone who loves sci-fi.

Hey there! I think that your codes are all really awesome! Do you have any tips for relatively new coders? I've been a lime on WoJM for quite a while now, and a bubblegum for a bit too. I would love to be able to code my own lessons one day. So, I guess that was a really convoluted way of saying: Do you have any resources that helped you when you were first starting out?

Hey hello! Thank you so much that means a lot! Honestly I think it depends on what way works with you the best. Personally I am more of a physical / Hands on learner so I learned how to code fast by looking at other codes for reference. This doesn't mean like copy and paste someone else's code but like, just look at how everything is laid out and figure out what's what. I also got a lot of help from my friend Holly. They just taught me how to insert fonts!!!

And if you learn best by reading and watching videos I recommend using W3schools, it teachers you what everything is and has the codes. I also watched this video: Learn HTML . If you want to start making codes I would 100% start with wallpost codes. They are simple and easy and a lot of fun to make. Then slowly work your way up, to lessons, articles, PTs & backstories and then books. Defiantly don't you need to rush into the process and take your time on each code!!!

One last thing, I honestly wouldn't use W3schools for actually making codes because if you exit the site on accident, refresh by mistake or close chrome or google then all your progress is gone right away. I would use something like Codepen to make your codes!

Artemis Fowl books were so ingrained into my childhood, that I still remember that September 1st is this fictional criminal mastermind's birthday xD Me and my friends used to congratulate e/o with this occasion, instead of with the start of the school period (seriously, who's even happy about this)

Sadly, since DeviantArt isn't working anymore, I can't find more fanarts of Artemis from old days, I think this christmas one was one of the last I've made xD But there was a lot of fun things, I even made flash dress up games with AF and Holly, some animations, cool-tech-wallpapers and everything. I think I even started coding at 10yo and learning robotics in school because of this book series. It's so good.

Also I met 2 of my best friends because of Artemis Fowl books. First we met online, and then we grew up together and I always meet them, even 10 years later. It's funny how the three of us were obsessed with reading AF and then grew up to be... a coder/engineer (me), a writer-journalist (my friend), and a criminal investigator (another one). Literally we all took the best and different sides of these books xD

Aah, great memories.

Microsoft says its new laptops are twice as powerful as the MacBook Pro — here's what that means (AAPL, MSFT)

Microsoft is mounting a direct challenge to Apple's MacBook Pro laptops.

In recent years, Apple's MacBook Pros have been the high-end notebook of choice for those who need a high-performance laptop. 

Now, Microsoft wants its Surface Book to be that device. The company best known for Windows is making direct comparisons to Apple's aluminum juggernaut. 

Here's how Microsoft's corporate VP of devices Panos Panay compared the two laptop brands during a briefing last week:

“The Surface Book 2 is twice as performant as the MacBooks that just started hitting the market now,” Panay said.

“So if you took the 13-inch and compared it to the 13-inch,” he continued, “you’d see [Surface Book 2 is] two times more powerful. That’s the same as the two 15-inches, you would see it two times more powerful.”

“That includes the fact that [Microsoft's laptops] are both delivering more than 30% pixels in both,” he concluded. 

To translate: Microsoft says its laptop is more powerful that Apple's — and it has a higher resolution screen, too. 

But what does Microsoft's claim that its laptops have twice the performance mean? 

Twice as performant

MicrosoftMicrosoft's claim is based on two benchmarks: A 3Dmark 11 test, which focuses on graphics performance, and a LuxMark test that scores both the computer's CPU and GPU. 

Basically, Microsoft claims that its computers have faster chips inside. Of course, then it depends on which model is being tested, because both Microsoft and Apple offer several different chip options. 

It appears that Microsoft's tests are comparing the high-end to the high-end — pitting the 13-inch MacBook Pro with the fastest chip Apple offers, the Intel i7-7567U, starting at $1799, against the Surface Book 2 with a Intel's i7-8650U chip.

These are not entry-level models. 

It's easy to see why Microsoft is claiming the victory on the 13-inch model. The processor that Microsoft's laptop uses has four cores, and Apple does not offer any 13-inch MacBook Pro models with a quad-core chip. Basically, a quad-core chip has four different units that can perform calculations, whereas a dual-core chip, like those in the MacBook Pro, only have two. 

Generally, quad-core computers score better on benchmark tests, but whether you need the extra two cores often comes down to what you're doing. 

If you're doing tasks like video editing or transcoding with software that can take advantage of multiple cores, you'll notice a big improvement with the extra two cores. On the other hand, more cores means it uses more power and runs hotter, and if you're just surfing Google and Business Insider, you probably don't need the extra cores. 

In addition, the Surface Book 2 model that Microsoft pitted against Apple has a discrete graphics processors from Nvidia — specifically, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050. This is a big deal for people who might want to play games, render video, or run any kind of virtual reality.

Apple won't include a discrete chip at all with its smaller MacBook Pro — users have to make due with the graphics processor that Intel builds into its chips. For many people, the graphics card alone will be enough to pick the Surface Book 2 over Apple's laptop. 

Big laptop situation 

Kif LeswingIt's a little less clear comparing the two 15-inch laptops. Microsoft's test unit had the Intel i7-8650U chip and bigger MacBook Pros use quad-core Intel chips as well, up to the Intel i7-7920HQ, mostly eliminating the cores advantage.

But Microsoft is claiming significantly better battery life than Apple — up to 17 hours for either model. Apple only promises 10 hours of web browsing from its MacBook Pro models — and I personally see less on a daily basis. 

Of course, promises on a spec sheet are just that. Independent analyst will eventually benchmark these new laptops and test their batteries to see how they fare in the real world to confirm what Microsoft is seeing in its test labs. 

But particularly with the 13-inch Surface Book 2, it does look like Microsoft has packed in significantly more powerful chips than Apple. 

Not for everyone

Hollis Johnson/Business InsiderAt first glance, the Surface Book 2 and the current lineup of MacBook Pro are very similar, underscoring the fact that Microsoft is not going for the entire laptop market with its two new Surface Book laptops. It's only going for the extremely high-end. 

The 13-inch Surface Book 2 starts at $1499, and the bigger one costs $2499. Apple's are slightly less expensive, with its least expensive MacBook Pro retailing for $1299 and 15-inch models starting at $1999 — although the prices go up when you start picking out options. 

The way Microsoft frames those high price tags is that it's making laptops for "creators." Creators, according to Microsoft, are designers, photographers, coders, and even writers. 

Another way to look at that is that it's targeting people for whom a $3,000 computer makes perfect financial sense — they're spending hours on it per day for years. It would be silly to buy a cheap laptop. 

This has been Apple's market. Apple's laptops have never been dominant in terms of market share — Apple currently hovers around a 7% market share — but some estimates have Apple capturing 60% or more of PC profits. 

"The PC market is flat to shrinking, but there is growth on the premium space, right where Microsoft is targeting Surface," Patrick Moorhead, Principal Analyst with Moor Insights & Strategy, previously told Business Insider. 

But Apple's latest high-end laptops have disappointed Apple's own creators. Some take issue with the Touch Bar, a touchscreen strip built into the laptop's keyboard. The Touch Bar meant that Apple eliminated the escape key, which is a button that coders — perhaps the most important "creators" to a big tech company — hit all the time.

Others complained that the fact that the MacBook Pro doesn't have a true touch screen makes certain kinds of app testing or development more difficult. The lack of a GPU on the smaller models means that Apple's laptops can't really do virtual reality or augmented reality development, despite the fact that Apple's senior leadership talks up the technology all the time.
