The only way I can tolerate THAT one rationalization that makes the Sphinx Cadmus' wife is by headcanoning that Harmonia was just as cruel and malevolent as Cadmus, helped him murder her own brother Drakon and then frightened the Sphinx so horribly that she flew away due to her jealousy. If you're going to depict Cadmus as blood-thirsty and merciless then make Harmonia match her man's freak.
