Another good year for the commercial peak of soft rock on the top of the charts. With Evergreen, we're also seeing one of the first instances of the big soundtrack hit in pop music (we'll see an even larger staple of this phenomenon next year). Along with the prolific songwriter (and Swan in Phantom of the Paradise) Paul Williams, Barbra Streisand won the Academy Award for Best Original Song that year, making Streisand the first woman to receive an award as a composer.
The fusion of disco with other genres continues to grow in popularity this year, as seen with Rita Coolidge's cover of Jackie Wilson's (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher.

Chris Andrews SONG OF THE WEEK “Blown Away” https://timchrisandrews.bandcamp.com/track/blown-away —A synthpop love letter from the weather station of British singer-songwriter Chris Andrews, a British recording artist and singer-songwriter whose songs have been covered by Roger Daltrey, David Essex, and Davy Jones (Monkees). Chris was part of the seminal “freakbeat” band Fleur de Lys and, under the name Tim Andrews, he was a champion of late 60s psychedelic pop. In the 80s, under the name Kris Ryder, he released New Wave synthpop sides, continuing in that style in the Millennium with tracks like “Blown Away.” On a cosmic jukebox this would play between The Buggles, Thelma Houston, Naked Eyes, and OMD. Some soul musicians decide to do the most obvious thing one can do at the late stage of one's career and you guess what. Check Thelma Houston, for instance, she also did her covers albums, though that one contains the tunes sang by male singers, so the title is apt, i.e. A Woman's Touch. However, her current professionalism doesn't do her any favours. Mind you, the disc is fine, but that might be the problem. A lot of these platters with the remakes tend to be be too safe. Sure, there are some surprises in choices, yet A Woman's Touch could've been braver. I mean, Thelma Houston does her absolute best – she's in one of her better vocal modes –, she merely needed a greater production. I'm sure many prominent producers at the time would've liked to work with her.
